The Oldest Garbage Truck In Los Angeles

  • This one’s a special one.
As of April 2024, this truck, 36756, is the oldest garbage truck still running in LA Sanitation’s fleet. 36756 was the first truck that LA received as part of an order of Peterbilt 320 diesel octos from 2005-2006. All trucks prior to the 2005-2006 ones have been retired, making this truck the oldest still running in LA.
It’s very rare to see an octo in your neighborhood nowadays, let alone have one that has a regular route in your neighborhood. For me, usually the only octo I see is 764, which Ricardo uses as his spare from time to time. But a couple of weeks ago 756 became my neighborhood’s regular truck for trash. If you guys saw Kanyisa’s (North Central Refuse) post from a few weeks back showing LA’s retirement yard, you’ll know these diesels won’t be around much longer. After seeing that post, it became my goal for the next couple of months to get as much footage as possible of the diesels before they’re all gone. But as I said, it’s really rare to find them consistently nowadays. So I got extremely lucky with this one.
Before the filming of this video, I’d caught just a few clips of 756 in my neighborhood, but really nothing enough to make a full video. I didn’t even think I’d see it again, I just thought it was a sub or spare. But I really wanted to film it again. And a couple of weeks ago, my wish was granted. I had just returned to my neighborhood after filming elsewhere all morning. Recycle and greenwaste had already been collected, and I was about to head home when I heard the roar of a diesel from up the street. I couldn’t believe it when I saw 756. Remembering that it was the oldest truck in LA’s fleet, I quickly got my camera out to film. I followed 756 around for essentially the entire route. It was probably the most persistent I’ve ever been filming a truck before. I usually film on foot, so I was extremely tired after 756 finished up. But after reviewing the footage I caught, it was definitely worth it.
Huge thanks to the driver for letting me tag along for pretty much his entire route. He was extremely friendly and cool with me filming, and I hope I can film him and 756 some more in the future. What I’ve learned with my neighborhood is that the trash drivers are never consistent. Eric has been doing my neighborhood’s greenwaste for 18 years, Ricardo has been doing recycle for a year or two, but trash has never really had a consistent driver. But I hope this one can stay for a bit longer. He’s super cool and again, having an octo as a regular truck in your neighborhood is extremely rare nowadays, let alone the oldest one in the city.
Hope y’all enjoy this one. It’s probably one of the most special videos I’ve made so far with the retirement of these diesels ongoing. Thank you to everyone for watching, and enjoy!

That's insane that it's still running. I guess it was in good condition for them to keep running it. Hopefully they decide to keep it even longer

I learned more about my truck today than the whole year and a half I've been driving it. Thank you for putting this together. Hope to get many more miles out of it. Cheers!
