Absolutely, we've already seen the damage of mainstream media information manipulation. This is the next level. In addition, many, because of the media lies, have moved to internet news media sources that are even more polarizing and create even more division. This will take things off the ledge.
Hopefully this starts to bring back real journalism. Where they actually (god forbid) leave their offices to investigate stories. Instead of using google, social media and web cams.
Why would it have that effect? Whatever fake is spreading around will generate way more clicks. Far more profitable to be the first to get the fake out before verifying and then you get to report it was fake after, even more clicks.

The fakes are not published by mainstream media but overwhelmingly by the right-wing cloaca portals and foreign enemy disinformation actors. They see them as an effective propaganda tool in the absence of true facts and arguments, and they are counting on subterranean IQ and education levels of the super-gullible trumpoid audiences they are targeting.

Just wondering why they can't develop some type of code that every time a photo is generated from AI there is writing at the top or bottom that says AI generated photo. ?
They can but that doesn't prevent scrupulous people from creating fake video/photos/audio that doesn't have the code added.

Imagine every photo with snapchat/insta filters having to be watermarked. Smart phones use AI to auto touch-up pictures and even delete objects, there's no way anybody can keep up now, we'll just let it take over and have a computer president by 2050.
It's only going to get worse. A.I. can be used for good, but it's also a detriment to society.

I am not sure what planet you live on. Forget about AI. The reality is the majority of humans are idiots and can't tell facts from lies. You don't get around 1/2 of the country that believes in one set of "facts" and the other side believing in a different set of "facts". I doesn't matter which side is right. Just the mere fact that this is true, means that either one side has it wrong, or both sides have it wrong. Both sides cannot be right. Whatever the case, it means that large numbers of people can't figure out what is true.
People can be very easily manipulated if you tell them what they want to hear.
The fact that they can't tell that it's fake makes this even funnier.

That's completely sidestepping the issue. You're not solving a goddamn thing. AI image generators will continue to get better, you should see what they looked like a year ago. And someone can generate something that's not so outlandishly implausible that can still be immensely damaging.

I was talking to a friend about the cyclical nature of community involvement and about how we might be swinging back towards more local communities. He brought up the complete mistrust on online information might do that, and we might fall back to local/beliving what we see.
We like to think so but it’s hard to break people away from their own created worlds on social media.

These aren't deepfakes. They are AI generated. Very different. Deepfakes are video in nature, have a real person motion capture their face, and then add AI audio over it.

8:22 I think the lady's response to this question is correct. Sure, each individual person should do their due diligence to determine whether something is fake or real. But ultimately, it's companies (especially big companies with a large consumer base) who decide to to display such images to be responsible and confirm its authenticity. At least that's what we hope they do. That's why it will be dangerous if companies aren't held at a high standard and be accountable for distributing fake images.
