The Instrument you were thinking was some kind of sax with reverb effect was a electronic keyboard called a Hohner Clavinet D6. Stevie Wonder uses one for the intro and throughout Superstition.
Larry Carlton’s two guitar solos are considered to be some of the best ever put to vinyl. His nickname is Mr.335 because his guitar of choice has been a Gibson ES-335 that he’s had since 1969. Carlton is a legendary jazz musician. Did you catch Michael McDonald’s background vocals right before the outro? Agree on Donald’s voice. In his prime, one of the most unique voices ever in terms of phrasing. Who else can sing “Is there gas in the car, Yes there’s gas in the car”? and make it sound special? The song is about the rise and fall of Owsley Stanley, a San Francisco drug chemist in the later 60’s (LSD)
Mr. 335 OK, well he made an impression on me thats for sure. I just went back and listened to it. I wouldnt have known that was Mcdonald if you didnt say it. that was a nice repeat of 'get along' behind Donalds voice. seems like he's done a lot of work with these guys.
Welcome aboard; You'll love this LP (and all the rest of 'em). The song is about Owsley Stanley - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Owsley_Stanley - "American audio engineer and clandestine chemist"
That "Sax" was a Hohner Clavinet, played by Paul Griffin.

“Is there gas in the car? Yes there’s gas in the car. “. Love that part!
"That's Trippy Looking" LOL There You Go, Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds. Larry Carlton is So Good.
Clavinet - with the reverb
Rick Marotta played drums on “Don’t Take Me Alive” and “Everything You Did” while Bernard Purdie played on the rest of the album.
I'll be looking out for those 2 songs and pay a little more attention to his style
thanks for clarifying that
@@totallyradreactions5006 Marotta lays back less on the beat than Purdie.
Rick Marotta was the drummer on Peg.
oh ok. i didnt even check to see if he played on the Aja album
thanks for that info
The bass is what makes it for me. Chuck Rainy I believe. He can move. So tasty.
great bass line i agree
Seen Larry Carlton many times dating back to the mid 70s. To this day still can't get much better than him.
This whole album is a masterpiece
Drums: Bernard Purdie. Lead guitar: Larry Carlton’s first solo often considered one of the most interesting (and somewhat tricky) solos in pop/rock.
OK. so it was Bernard
well that blows my theory out the water
interesting info regarding the solo.
Larry Carlton is a very successful jazz guitarist
Clavinet! See: old Stevie Wonder. It’s where he got his funk grooves from, as well as SD did here
Superstition is the prime example
The best album by Steely Dan. Kid Charlemagne is the best track on it i.e. in their back catalogue.
Great album! (Gaucho is smooth jazz. zzz)
this song is about Owsley
