8 years since I first heard this on television, and up until now, this song still lives on in my heart. A gem stayed hidden yet so precious.
MEANING OF THE END:
The clip is an artistic take on the song.
There have been a lot of comments on the ending, and to be honest I didn't understand it at first as well.
This man begins totally lonely- the typical 'lone man on sea'.
Then oddly he finds a mermaid, falls in love she turns human. It doesn't look realistic, and is more of a dream than reality.
The lyrics read

Its the unsureness of a relationship. You do not know whether it is going to work out or if it is going to last, but all you know is in that moment you need and want to be together so badly you ignore the repercussions or the negative possibilities.
Whether she is a fairy or a mermaid or anything, all you want is to lay your hands in each others and 'break your plans', regardless of whether 'you make it' or not.
They fall in love, befuddled by this fantasy, ignoring the impossibilities it is circled by. And it dawns on them in the end- that their romance would be short lived and breaking your plans is all fine and dandy only in that moment.
The impossibilities catch up with them, and he ends up leaving, turning into a shark.
She was his fantasy, and he was hers. It was never going to work. 'It could not last'.

I don't understand our "music" today. This is where it's at. This is good music. They Fray has honestly been one of the first bands I've ever heard and loved. I remember when my brothers would drive my sister and I to places and they would have The Fray on. They're the reason why I even like this kind of music. Today, if I were to go out and play this music, I would be thought of as unusually weird. I hope that we an change that.

I heard this song a ling time ago and figured the radio people just hadn't heard it yet, or everyone would be praising it.
