  • E3 2001 raw tape focusing mainly on the games on display, but some other stuff too. This was when the Gamecube and Xbox were getting ready to launch, but weren't out yet. I think a lot of people (including myself) forget how much of a beast of a machine the original Xbox was for the time.

      I knew how powerful it was because I was able to start playing some PC games I always wanted to play. I remember my friend letting me borrow Morrowind. And I remember reading reviews of games like Splinter Cell and the Xbox was head and heals above the GameCube and PS2 version in terms of fire FX, lighting and particles, it was on par with the PC version. Surprisingly the GameCube at times seemed better than the PS2 in certain areas. The GameCube always surprised me in terms of it's power.

      @@thegamingchef3304 The GameCube is more powerful than the PS2 in most regards. And its games certainly look better; most PS2 games have a really muddy look to them.

      Just a tool for Microsoft to infect the industry with it's practices. They couldn't make their own games then and still can't now because it was never their intent.

    • @BlueEyedVibeChecker
      @BlueEyedVibeChecker 15 дней назад +1

      @@cptnoremac The PS2 runs internally at 224P/448i upscaled to 480i because it can't do native 480P; that thing is behind all of them, (More polys than Dreamcast but only at half the frame rate AND native resolution), less than GameCube and Xbox all around.
      But that's because Sony intended for it to be a 240P system with anti-aliasing, but scrapped Anti-aliasing last minute and didn't bump up the power of the Graphics Synthesizer either. (The GPU holds back the CPU since the CPU has to do the geometry instead, which is why you'd seldom see a 60fps game on Xbox/GameCube and Dreamcast run at 60fps on PS2 with the same visual fidelity.) The Emotion Engine could've done so much more with a competent GPU.

      The Xbox was equivalent to the most powerful PC you could possibly get at the time, since then consoles have been playing catch up. Especially when it came to the xbox 360/PS3 era, PC's became so much more powerful.

      To be fair, back then, budgets were smaller and 3D games were still pretty recent. The FPS 2-stick control scheme was still not well established (Alien Resurrection for PS1 released in 2000 was one of the first games to use it, and some reviewers blasted the control scheme). So they had no choice but to experiment. Today, we already know what works and what doesn't in terms of controls, and camera and gameplay. There's little reason to "experiment" by going back to failed experiments of the early 2000s.

    Omg I'm so happy to see this... for one thing, I'm in the video with Yu Suzuki at around 42 minutes as one of the sites interviewing him... but moreover, because even though I've been adding a lot of E3 and TGS stuff to my channel from this era, E3 2001 is the "one that got away"... I somehow lost my tapes from that year... which I seriously regret so badly... but now BOOM some of the key behind-the-scenes moments I just about remembered from E3 2001 are no longer just in my memories, but right in front of my eyes again... which I thought I would never, ever see. [Coury] I was at this show! I did video for a fan site called "The Next Level" during this time and so I was able to attend as part of that. Very cool experience with tons of good games on display. I must have watched the Metal Gear Solid 2 and Silent HIll 2 trailers 5 times a day. PS2 games looked ultra high res on those monitors as I was still getting used to 480i being the norm. It may well have been HD in my eyes. I also remember there being a rumbling of "Hey, did anyone see Grand Theft Auto 3? Its crazy!" I recall there being very little talk about it up to that point - we had no idea...

      Probably because it was hard to ignore the seismic shift in apocalyptic rhetoric in everyday life… followed by economic crash and whatnot…gas went up to like 5 bucks a gallon. It was an awful time. Here in ny it was especially traumatizing. Everybody knew somebody who was directly effected by the twin tower attack. So many people freaking out and leaving school thinking their parents were probably dead or gonna die. Anyway, good video!

      @@BlueEyedVibeCheckernon US citizen here. I don’t miss the era of gaming being mostly exclusively catered to male (white) heterosexual consumers. That’s the only reason why many big companies back then did that. Am I offended by 'good' (you know beauty is subjective) looking women? That ain’t the point and you know it, the point is why there was the need of doing it. Why not put 'hot' dudes in there instead? Sorry, it was 2001, probably would’ve called some homophobic slur or another outdated joke towards that booth for having dudes winking at gamers.

The amount that the graphics and technology improved between the two respective generations was just insane. Like compare any Luigi model on N64 to his model in Luigis Mansion or any N64 model of Mario to his Super smash bros melee model, its just freaking insane how big a jump this was.
