I did the same project last year. I remodeled the entire bathroom. Took me a while to do the drain and plumbing which I hate to do. I also put in new toilet, new sink, new bigger quiet exhaust fan. I did all the wall and floor tiling. I converted light from wall to ceiling recessed LED light. Saved alot of money by doing everything myself except for hiring a contractor to install slide shower door. Everything turned out great.

Just found your channel. The hubby and I are about to remodel my bathroom. I want to convert my tub to walk in shower and this came in handy. We already gut the bathroom. We just left the toilet and tub in coz I wasn’t sure if I wanted a tub or walk-in. Now seeing this I do want a walk in. So I’m watching and re watching this. I’m soaking in everything I can. The floor tile is actually what I wanted. I like your shower floor tile. But I wanted bigger tile for the walls. Thank you. I sub so I can come back to keep learning.

How much will i charge labor for converting tub to walking shower on this time (virginia)?
If you use the channel lock pliers in a manner that gets the job done, it is fine. Even if some perpetually cranky people don't agree.

Watched all 9 parts. What is the time frame & cost for converting a bath/shower to a shower? What were the cost of materials (roughly) and even though you did this yourself, do you have an estimate for what it may cost to have a professional do this?
We just bought a house and I really want to do this. My father in law is good with construction and built his house, so I’m sure he will understand this better than I could. While I’m sure I could do it in theory I feel like there is too much room for error and I don’t want to end up with a flooded bathroom and water damage.
This job took about 2 weeks if I remember correctly, as for the material and cost of labor it will vary from job to job, area to area, person to person. Thanks for watching.

Warning watch out when you take that sawzaw and cut through the fiberglass you might have electrical lines or gas lines in the wall! I did a couple of these lately and yes I had a gas line and electrical lines I had to be careful of the depth of the blade. I angled the sawzaw so my blade barely broke the surface and was fine.

Seriously though, all jokes aside, excellent ‘how to’ video on this job, on par with ‘Ask this old house’ too! I’m looking to take my one bathtub out of my upstairs bathroom and convert it to a walk-in shower stall. While I’m at it, I might as well put tile in instead of using the current laminate vinyl floor, as heated floor system, upgrade my single sink and full size mirror to a two-sink with under mount sinks. Love the videos, keep it up, learned a lot sir!

No, I don’t have a list. The materials vary so much from job to job that it really would be a mostly useless list.

a better idea is to extend the shower to the edge. When I removed mine in the mater bathroom it had a tub like that and it looks like i doubled the size by removing the plastic tub that took up 2-3 inches of space then extending it it to the edge was icing on the cake to make it bigger.

my shower tub is cheap fiber glass with walls I want to remove and install walk in shower measure bathroom wall to wall 58 inch but the shower pan I want to buy is 60 inch you think will fit because I cant find 58 inch walking shower pan please advise ?
Take a measurement from the wall above the shower it should be about 59 inches. That will be a half inch on each side for drywall. If that is the case you should be good to go.

I found your video very informative and helpful. How would something like this work with a sunken bathtub or a floor bathtub?
You may have to rebuild part of the floor where the sunken tub is but after that it should be the same. Hope this helps.

Can I just cut the tub drain off? I mean the overflow? And just put a regular drain?
I’m not sure what you are asking? You have to do away with the overflow and retrofit a shower drain where the tub drain was. Tub drains and shower drains are different. Hope this helps.

Why do that you can take bottom tub out and put up tile and shower pan fit over drain put shower drain piece back in .... You don't need to demolish everything out ...

Video is alittle old but hopefully you see it. How do you install the liner if there was a seat? Thank you.
Installing a seat presents a little more difficulty. The liner should be placed over the seat like a shingle on a roof so that water runs down it flows over. The use of a waterproofing crack isolation membrane will also add another layer of waterproofing. Hope this helps, Thanks for watching.
Hi, How to Bob. I had my whole shell removed before, and put in a new shower shell.
We just bought a new house and I am unable to step over the side of the tub to get in and take a shower. (I cannot take a bath.)
I'm just wondering if I can cut out most of the side of the tub and what could I then use to cover the cut parts?

I know there is a kit that will allow you to cut a section out of the side of the tub and it comes with an insert that covers the cut out part. You may be able to find it if you search on the Internet. I hope this helps, thanks for watching.

Why not notch the front of the tub to walk in height and put a new tub liner over everything?

How heavy is your shower curtain that the rod needs to be bolted to the wall
I figure at least 200 lbs by the time you factor in someone falling and grabbing the curtain or kids hanging off it.

Thanks for the informative how to video. I’m about to tackle this in my bathroom, but have never done this before but feel more confident that I can do it now. I have a slab instead of a conventional foundation. Would you recommend anything different to do for a slab foundation? Is the concrete subfloor backer board still necessary or just used if the concrete floor is uneven? Thanks

Why did you have to move the drain? Code or preference? I have a concrete slab so I’m a little hesitant to cut into it.

Hi Bob, Great video. I was hoping you could weigh in on an odd setup: the actual flooring that was under our old tub is sloped already (luckily towards the drain). I'm not sure if it's better to shim it so the new floor is level and then use a pre-pitch kit to give it a proper pre-slope, or just go with the floor being pitched and try to mortar it by eye so it slopes approximately what it should before the liner goes on top? Thanks - any advice would be helpful!
I would recommend starting with a level floor. I always feel that it is better to start with a good base so you are building on a solid foundation. Hope this answers your question. Thanks for watching.

Having worked the business my self,,,this isnt for everyone. Home owners hire people that know !! Its not like painting a room. This starts deep in the concrete for proper draining.

Will such a conversion change your bathroom from a full bath to a 3/4 bath and affect your home value?
I would not recommend it unless there is another tub in the house. Some people would look at this as a negative, but then some would look at just the tub as a negative. Hope this answers your question. Thanks for watching
Realtor just told me that many new home builders are not doing master bathroom tubs now, just large walk-in showers. As long as there is a tub in a 2nd bath it’s no longer considered a detriment to home value...

Sure it is, didn’t the area where the tub used to be get converted into where a shower is now? I guess to your point this could be considered a partial remodel considering not everything was remodeled but then what to name the video? I guess I could have named it “partial bathroom remodel including replacing a tub with a shower.” Or I could have named it” taking a tub out and replacing it with a shower and re-doing the floor”. conversion- the process of changing or causing something to change from one form to another.
replacement- the action or process of replacing someone or something.
I can't tell if funbro1 is being a smartass in his reply to you but my thought is, funbro1 your title infers that the tub was converted not the area of the tub. Your channel is about teaching people. You had to learn your trade before you could teach it so never stop learning. Myles M is correct in his comment to you. So, always be willing to learn. No one knows everything.
SandiRose You are correct when you say never stop learning. I am constantly trying to lean new techniques, new products, better ways to do things, and even faster ways to do things. While learning things I have also learned that people get caught up in semantics all too often. As stated in my first reply the "area" that was once a tub was converted to an "area" that is now a shower only.

Hi Bob, towards the end you didn't show how you converted the drain from a tub drain to a shower drain (which is further out). In part 2, it's already done. What exactly did you do? I can see PVC piping in Part 2 but not sure what you did.
Actually all I did in video 1 was cut the drain pipe off, Sorry I should have shown that I guess. In video 2 I needed to Build up the floor around the drain to support the mortar bed. One word of advice is to make sure that you have a vent so that your drain works correctly. This drain had a vent that you can see on the faucet wall just to the right of the drain at :08 in video 2. I hope this explains what has happened and answers your questions. Thanks for watching.
I have a similar situation. I have a vent to the right exactly like this. How did you change it? I cannot simply change it since my drain pipe is placed close to the subfloor. So my 45 bent will have to start from top of the drain and it will come out. Need some advice.
i have a concrete slab-what concrete do i use to fill in “void” around shower drain trap?

Carol Well being that in my craft, I use this tool properly every day. So when you have someone doing a how to video, showing the tools used improperly...kinda defeats the purpose. The teeth on them are designed to only bite in one direction, using them backwards allows them to slide on what you are gripping. This creates gouges and scratches on whatever you are using them on. If you wanna use them wrong and do half assed work...feel free. While at it, use the claw of the hammer to pound nails in, it works really well
I just had someone come over to talk about converting a tub/shower to just a shower. 12K!!! That is ridiculous. I am going to ask around to see if any local companies/people do this. I could redo my entire bathroom for less that that!!!
