HOW I MIRROR FINISH A BAR
I start with an 80 grit flap disc on my angle grinder then I use my drill with 50 mm round sanding discs . I start with 150 grit then go through the following Grits 240-400-800 Then once I get to the following Grits I use a small squirt of WD-40 1200-1500-2000-2500-3000. The WD40 helps to lubricate the discs and stops the sanding disk binding up with the metal powder . Then after that I use my buffer wheel on my bench grinder to get a perfect mirrored finish on it.

I know nothing about metallurgy but this is how I feel about each metal after watching your channel for close to a year now:
Copper- Class melt, the red is a really nice color, it often comes out of recoveries quite and is and the process of taking it out of wires seems satisfying
Aluminum- silver is a nice color, and it seems quite easy to melt, the slag at the end always seems to have a lot of extra aluminum so I like the fact that you take care to not waste anything.
Brass- definitely least favorite, I can understand why someone might like gold but it often looks like sulfur when smelted and seems like the dirtiest of the metals to melt. Still great though

    Likes and observations:
I like the blend of casting and sand moulds in one vid. However, not opposed to a full sand mould vid, esp if it’s something functional you’ll use in the shop.
I like the smaller to medium coins and objects.
Your benches look wobbly. I suggest some diagonal bracing for the legs for rigidity and maybe anchor the back to the wall. Just a suggestion.
I’d like to see a kiln relining and then casting vid. I know you have a big kiln coming, but I’d still watch it.
Fan Mail. Yes. Maybe not everything, but def the good stuff. Maybe hi light some viewers creations. Also, maybe an open and melt, or an open and use vid. I know it’d make the vids longer but I’d still watch for sure.
Sand casting for objects you’ll use in the shop. Knobs, handles, small hammer or small tools or specialized objects for your needs.
Thanks for all your great content. Been a fan for years.

Also, one of the knife making channels, not sure if I can say which one, had some angle grinder cut off wheels sent to him from a company called Graf. A diamond edge metal cutter and a wood blade. Loved todays episode.. Since you have a wood burner (stove/fireplace) you could pre-melt stuff.. Like put the copper in it to burn off the paint & resin.. It would work for other metals too.. I used to do lots of scrapping and always melted my metals to ingots, (Pays more money) I had a huge wood burner in my garage.. It actually was a small Incinerator, yet they are large compared to a normal wood burner.. Worked great for me for 20+ years.. Never had large amounts of slag, pre-burning them..

By far copper melts are my favorite. I like a mixture of end product, coin, sand castings, or ingots, you have a good mix.
I especially like the motor melts.
    Nice place you have there!

Definitely enjoy the regular casting, and finding random pieces of scrap to break down into various metals the best. Love your channel!

Great video! I really love your new place. You are going to grow into it well. For Sand, casting you really need to obsess over your molds. Parting lines, sprue, cope and drag etc. just like Windy Hill foundry does.

In terms of favorite type of metal being seen melted, probably copper. Its very satisfying seeing it go from whatever wiring it was used in, to being molded into bright shiny brown ingots. Doesn't seem too terrible to work with, either. For least favorite, definitely aluminum. Seems like a pain in the ass to work with, and there always seems to be loads of slag during the whole process, so messy on top of that, too...
For the question about the fan mail opening, I think it could be fun for sure to see what all comes in! Maybe designate it to Saturday or Sunday if you end up deciding on making videos on it. I know I would tune in, for sure

I would have to say Nordic gold. 🇸🇪😇
But the common aluminium looks so fun to play with. 👏👏👏
Then again, I really enjoy seeing you melt the more precious and rare metals so I’ll go with that. 😃

I like watching the copper cool down in the ice block and reveal its color. And when the aluminum freezes back into a solid in the molds.

I love your videos. BTW, love the socks! Cowabunga!
I like all metal melts but I truly love copper since it's my other first favorite besides silver. In regards to what I prefer in what the metal becomes, I like them all and I just can't pick a favorite, don't think I could.
It would be nice to see you open fan mail in video.
    Much love and respect.

I was literally watching some of your previous motor melting videos yesterday, it's like you were watching me, but i ain't complaining, it's nice to watch what you got~
Im in the boat of preferring ingots and coins, simply because I like being able to actually see the molds fill up as you pour, it's very satisfying to watch. But at the same time, an occasional sand cast gets no complaints from me, as I get to see something different and unique when they happen

I think Aluminum is my favorite to watch pour, but brass and bronze are probably my favorite to watch melt. I also really like the metal mixing you did for Nordic gold.

It was like a giant aluminum slag soufflé!
Let's see... I do love the aluminum melts. So pretty and shiny! Even the slag is interesting. Then again, the nordic gold is beautiful. I love how putting all those metals together results in gold! Also, the copper melts are so awesome... green flames, the liquid metal color is gorgeous, the way you blowtorch the metal and it takes on this rainbow sheen...
Oh, right... the question was "What's your favorite metal melt?"... um... you want me to choose just one???
And yes, open your fan mail. Why not? It'd be kind of cool!
"Do you prefer sand casting or ingots and coins?" -- Yes. 😛

@14:38 - Aluminum suffle? This one was pretty interesting to watch. I like the mould pours with the sand a lot. I always find the prep for those relaxing when I used to do it for myself with silver back when I hobbied at jewelry-making. Mind you, that was on a much smaller scale than BigStackD ever does in his shop.

I've been working in a foundry for the last year now, your wooden boxes for sand casting are smaller versions of the steel frames we use for our sand casting 😎🤙 I love Fridays! Always means I have no trouble sleeping when I get home from work and then I rewatch after I get up to see what I missed hahaha

    • @Nick_Slavik
      @Nick_Slavik 2 года назад

We also need to keep thousands of pounds of weights on our casting frames so the gas build-up doesn't make the frames blow apart hahaha

I've been a moulder for 13 years and always use a riddle while puting on the facing sand to a pattern surface makes a much nicer finish with less to no voids on the casting surface
you can just make one with some 1/4 inch wire mesh and a 3 inch frame

BigStackD you're just full of questions this week, aye? Ok, in order:
    1. Favorite metal to watch melt: its a tie between Silver and Copper
    2. Should you make fan mail unboxing vids? YES!
    3. Sand casting or ingots/coins? IMO you strike the perfect balance already. About 10-20% sandcast and 80+% ingots/coins. The variety is nice. 👌

Yes, please open some fan mail in the video. The best parts of sand casting are when you super speed pound the sand and when the fire pops out of the second hole.

Could you do a video where you melt down the rest of the brass bullet casings, and you could you turn them into brass throwing knives.
