Right on again. Thanks for your clear and complete videos. You were the first you tube instructor I followed when I started my golf journey 5 years ago. Some how I keep coming back. Weight shifting and reducing arm pull/yank has been a game changer for me. I’m hit 7 irons 170 effortlessly at 59 yrs old. Thanks again.
Clay - your weight-shift videos have changed my game for the better. Years of shifting weight way too late. Thanks so much. Golf is so much more fun now that I'm looking forward to that next iron shot, not dreading it - like I have for so many years
This is probably the single most important aspect to get right to improve your game... so many other enhancing elements of the swing are made possible if the weight shift is right... thanks Clay.
Great video, I’ve been working on this for a while now and it does take time to get the body to behave and do this naturally. I will say golf is so much more fun when I am swinging good. I think this video is great because the “floating hands” also gets into tempo issues that I and so many others have or had in their swing. Lastly, the “floating hands” starts to teach that club speed at the top means nothing and gets people to get the club speed where it belongs ... at the bottom of the swing. With such a simple videos you are really addressing so many things without people have to think about the other elements. I’m a big fan of your content, great work!
I picked the game back up last year after an almost 10 year absence. Needless to say the time away did me no good, worst I have golfed my life. I found this channel earlier this year as I plan to work on my game. Without a doubt Clay your explanation is the best out there. I have a net in my garage and practice your drills daily. I live in Michigan so its a bit early to hit the course but I can tell just by hitting balls into the net your advice is helping. Keep it up and thank you.
Dude, this is one of the best explanations I've ever heard. Thank you for the simplicity. You have literally fixed my game. This is what I have been working on but had no idea if it was correct. What I was worried about was timing, and you show it perfectly for amateurs. Every golfer should be subbed to your channel. Great work brother.
i know im randomly asking but does anybody know a trick to get back into an instagram account..? I was stupid lost the password. I appreciate any tips you can give me!
@Leonard Fox I really appreciate your reply. I got to the site through google and im trying it out atm. Seems to take quite some time so I will get back to you later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
Love this video. I'm a father of a competitive junior golfer. We're a family of limited means, only exacerbated by covid, so paying for high level instruction is not an option. Just wanted to thank you for this content. I absolutely love this video. Love the length of them. Love the manner in which you describe how things should 'feel.' Like how 'the hands should be floating back here' as weigh shifts forward. The junior season started this weekend with our snow Just melting and we had issues this video may help with. Just know this stuff means a lot to a father/son team im Pa. Keep up the great work!
The way you explain these concepts is better than anything on here. Don’t get me wrong, once I get a club and start drilling it’s not that straight forward but I’ve made more progress in a few weeks than I have in a few years watching your videos so thanks.
Watch Bobby Jones, Jack and Tiger at .25 speed. It's easy to see Bubba Watson and Fred Couples do it. They bend the left leg and start slightly down and several inches forward with the lower body before the clubs gets to the top.
This is so very true, I wish I had before and after video of my game so I could advocate for him with evidence. His chipping videos turned me into a totally different player.
Beautiful swing and points out how I am not making the proper weight shift and have no "separation", so poor swing speed. Really focuses on my problem so big thank you. Like your studio presentation too.
Clay your content is getting better and better. Am working through the Top Speed Golf System and its brilliant. I am sure very soon you will smash through 500,000 subscribers. Keep up the great work 👍
Thank you for this incredible content Clay! This feels more of a lateral move as opposed to starting a rotation by pushing the feet on the ground. When I iníciate the downswing it feels as if I'm screwing a lid with my right foot. Did I learn weight shift and power the wrong way? Or just different methods? THANK YOU!
There's more than one way to swing. It's always a good idea to follow only one instructor at a time. If what you're doing is working, there's no need to make any changes. Play well! Nate | TSG Instructor
@Top Speed Golf - Clay Ballard Would you say it's better to square up the face with the wrist later in the backwing, or could one do it much earlier in the backswing? Pros/cons to each way? Oh, and when you say your hands are floating, what about the arms? I've always been curious about the tension level between the left ARM vs. the right arm (right-handed player) I'd love to get more clarity about the role of each arm, position, tension, how close to chest etc. Do you have a video specifically about that, or could you make one?
You can square up the face whenever it suites you best. Some people find it easier to do at the top of the backswing ala Dustin Johnson. Here are two videos that cover each arm in detail: Left arm: ruclips.net/video/_9LUqf2dOlc/видео.html Right arm: ruclips.net/video/XwQyy_TupVo/видео.html Play well! Nate | TSG Instructor
@@TopSpeedGolf Thanks. Though it looks like to me, that as long as you can get the left arm doing what it needs to do, the right arm/elbow should pretty much fall in line naturally. I'm just wondering about how loose/relaxed or tight each arm should be at address, and if that should change purposely through the course of the swing.
@@TopSpeedGolf Well, took this to the range today to give it a focused practice. 8 iron going 160 yards. Picked up 20 yards on average by doing this. HOWEVER, it's a new feeling, and it requires more CORE control that I'm simply not used to. I feel so out of control letting my hands and arms float back that I have no confidence of consistency at the moment doing it this way.
I'm sure I'm not the only one that would love to see this, but can you do a course vlog? Just to show us what's going through your head in a real round situation. Again love your content and new member of speed golf. Can't wait to send you guys videos of my swing to get me in the 90s consistently. Never would've broke 100 if not for your drills Clay. Thanks again
I generally have a DS overslide tendency, with early trail heel raise and right hip extension in early DS. Generally strikes good, with squareish face but CHS is down. I have improved the look on DL video by the feel of rotating trail foot clockwise from the top. Would you recommend this feel in keeping with your video?

I sometimes feel I am too static over the ball during my swing and it feels too armsy. Is it ok for a slight move off the ball even maybe just the slightest of a sway? Jimmy Ballard (any kin?) used to say it was better to “go over the wall” than a reverse pivot. Whenever I do that it seems easier to get to my left side. Plus my tempo seems better with a slight move off the ball. Love your channel 👍
Clay likes to lift his lead toe to start the weight shift to the trail side and begin the swing. I'd give that a whirl and see if it helps. Despite their namesakes, Jimmy and Clay are not related. We think Jimmy is awesome, though. Best of luck! Nate | TSG Instructor
Lifting the lead heel can free up the hips to get more turn and can be the impetus for the start of the downswing when you step back down for sure. Best of luck! Nate | TSG Instructor
I was thought the weight should be on left even on the starting the back swing. Sean Foley even showed one legged swing by using left foot. I'm confused..
There's more than one way to swing the golf club. It's always a good idea to only follow one instructor at a time to avoid conflicting and confusing information. Play well! Nate | TSG Instructor
Hi Clay - can you use this tip of starting to move right whilst on the upswing and floating for Wood shots or is it only for irons ? Thanks for the really informative vids - cheers from Sydney
There is a slight pause in between backswing and downswing so that you can shift forward and then swing. You call it floating or which basically is a pause, and that's another way of feeling it.
5:52 after I smash one with a smooth swing my brain thinks we put in a lot more effort or something and I’m over-swinging on my next shot. Always happens to me where as soon as I’m hitting them great I try to hard to crush it instead of letting it happen!
Not sure if you’ve done this yet, but I can hit every iron in bag pretty decently, just the point I feel comfortable hitting comfortable shots, except for my 4 and 5 iron ... any pointers on what to do with these clubs? I use a 3 hybrid typically in place of those clubs so I have to use half, thee quarter and full swings to act as essentially 3 longer irons for me ... as someone who typically hits a 6 iron 165-170 yds it makes it tough not being able to hit an iron into the green but instead rely on running a 3 hybrid up on to it ... 4 and 5 iron, two clubs that always still have the head covers on them at the end of every round, how do I hit them and hit them well?
well the first mistake was using iron covers, try taking them off any maybe you nut up.... lol i kid i kid maybe your coming in steep and hitting to down on the ball? possibly try to sweep the ball more.
There really is no different swing with the long irons than with the shorter ones other than they're longer and your swing is slightly flatter. I would practice with my 4-iron all of the time. Find out what your typical issues are and work on those issues until you get to a point where you're crushing that club. If you don't want to go that route, they do make hybrids in 4 and 5-iron lofts. Best of luck! Nate | TSG Instructor
There was another RUclips video on the top speed golf that said to avoid bumping to left titled “stop bumping the hips”. Here it says the opposite...or my interpretation is wrong ? Please clarify. Thanks
We overemphasize during practice to ingrain the movement. Clay is not actually bumping or swaying his hips during the swing, he's just telling you the sensation you should be feeling to make sure the weight is being shifted correctly. Play well! Nate | TSG Instructor
Hopefully you'll be able to get out soon. In the meantime, you can practice at home with something as simple as a piece of carpet, foot spray powder and a heavy blanket if you don't have a net. Putting is also a good thing to practice at home when you're not able to get out and practice. Best of luck! Nate | TSG Instructor
Never thought i could generate this much speed. Gotta work on this to make it more consistent. If my swing speed radar isn't malfunctioning, I just gained +7 mph in 5 mins..... Maybe my radar is malfunctioning... gotta hit the real ball to make sure...
One of the best instructional videos ever. Moving towards the target, during the backswing, so the hands can have that floating sensation. I like to call it "The Properly Choreographed Golf Dance"
Wow, I've been struggling to figure out why my iron swing speed has been dropping the past couple years. Never even thought about it being my weight distribution.
Would throwing the club help with this.. I got myself and old set of clubs to throw with.. I really liked your video on focus. My focus is messing up my swing... to much focus on the ball 😀 stay safe mate
On your lag shot video, you obtained 206 yards on a swing that appeared not nearly as hard as the swing in this video. Is efficiency of swing more important than effort? I am more inclined to go with the swing I saw in the lag shot video which appeared relatively effortless.
not to bring up a can of worms, but what do you think of the 'one plane' swing? I've been seeing this term all over recently, and when I saw a couple of videos, it literally went the exact opposite of your swing theories... in my opinion, the swing doesn't look very athletic (natural), but the claims of why it is supposed to be a great swing are very interesting... mainly, this one youtube channel guy says it is easier to do than any other swing... do you have a video of pros/cons of different kinds of swings? for me, I could watch Clay's swing all day... I just want to make sure that I'm on the right track...
Clay, Are these two moves with the knees and hands happening at the same time? I really struggle with a steep transition. And have tried everything to shallow but to no avail. If you have any drills that can help out please let know. Thanks!
The problem is you’re showing the weight shift with a sway, you don’t want to move your hips laterally at all. Just shift where the weight is distributed in your feet.
@@3spressoShot - What many of us amateurs do is sway back, then sway forward with little to no rotation in the hips, that is the bad move. Or us amateurs will sway back and forward with a very late hip rotation, that is also bad. Clay’s hips have a lot of rotation throughout the swing.
Sorry you're not finding this helpful. A lot of amateurs have an over-the-top swing and this gets them swinging from the inside. Play well! Nate | TSG Instructor
You need to have a average golfer or below average golfer on your show to see how you correct the faults that many of us suffer daily on the golf course.
Its the weight of arms and club , ca 30-40 pounds that shifts around the right hip in BS. Pivot ,not a body weight shift. The autonomic (subconscious) balance mechanism controls the feet and leg movement to keep us in balance. The human balance mechanism has evolved to protect our brain , our main survival mechanism. There is no way to balance consciously. The swing happens too quickly and requires too much timing for consistency. Override the autonomic(subconscious) balance mechanism at your peril... = YIPS.

Are these two moves with the knees and hands happening at the same time?
I really struggle with a steep transition. And have tried everything to shallow but to no avail.
If you have any drills that can help out please let know.
Thanks!
Ballard your first swing was PGA tour stuff.
Thanks!
I need to work on this. My 6 iron goes about 150 yards. 😡
I appreciate the "kick your left knee out" I can do that.
Thanks for sharing! Play well!

I struggle with this. When I do it right, I crush the ball. It’s similar to actually throwing the ball.
Keep working on it and you'll get there. Best of luck!
Hello
Hi, Meek!
How about no weight shift back
I thought the center of your chest wasn’t supposed to leave the center of the ball
The problem is you’re showing the weight shift with a sway, you don’t want to move your hips laterally at all. Just shift where the weight is distributed in your feet.
pros do have a slight lateral slide
@@3spressoShot yeah slight, but they stay centered over the ball, and they keep their head behind the golf ball

@@TopSpeedGolf great video, sorry I realize now I came off as a dick
No worries at all. However, appreciate your mea culpa. Play well!
That’s a whole lot of swaying, timing needs to be spot on or disaster
Thanks for sharing!
💪
Thanks!
Isn’t this just swaying? Thought this was a no no. ?
Love the content. :)
i think if it was just swaying the hips stay pointing straight at impact , where this is slight bump aka a small slide but with rotation
Thanks! Clay is swaying while trying to demonstrate the weight shift. Play well! Nate | TSG Instructor
@@3spressoShot - What many of us amateurs do is sway back, then sway forward with little to no rotation in the hips, that is the bad move. Or us amateurs will sway back and forward with a very late hip rotation, that is also bad. Clay’s hips have a lot of rotation throughout the swing.
Good video, bad math. LOL
Justin Rose will tell you 60 on the left 40 on the right,
The lesson doesn't match what you're actually doing in your swing. You're definitely swaying in the lesson, but there is no head swaying in your swing
Thanks for sharing!
Why all the talk of shallowing? Your adding another timing move. Loved your vids until you started this new move.
Hey thanks for the advice! Hope you enjoy watching the channel!
= YIPS.
