I have been a follower of Santana for nearly 50 years, since I was on school, circa 1973, some great musicians and fabulous music over this time, without a doubt a magical band, Carlos you are a true artist my friend, thank you.
In 1974, I saw Santana for the first time at the Aragon Ball room, when I was in high school. My friend and I sat on the back of a folding chair at a venue that held, at most, 2000 people. While I since become fluent in Spanish, we were the only 2 at the concert that didn't speak Spanish. I've seen a lot of concerts in my day, but this was the best. A truly great and gifted musician. I love Latin culture.
This incarnation of Santana, with Greg Walker, Tom Coster and the most fantastic, pulsating rhythm section, has got to be one of the best rock bands ever, IMHO...
Some Folks don't realize just how great Carlos is. His intense guitar playing through all these years, all the tunes, all kinds of music flows from the Holy Spirit through his heart and soul and comes through to us through his fingers. He could be playing a $20 guitar and we would still feel it. Peace You All.
u hit it on the bullseye!!! he will always b remembered as one of the most unique & guitar player in history of music, I'm 65 & started playing when I was 6, I learned so many Santana tunes, I thank him for his music
@@greatunz67 I don't think you are being fair to him. Who among us can do what we could do 30 years ago at the same level as we could do then? Even though he now makes his living based on his past glory days, he still tries to keep his music fresh and entertaining for his audiences.
I recorded this off the live FM simulcast when it was first broadcast, and it was one of my favorite tapes for years. Glad to see the performance is still as great as my memory.
first off, Carlos is on fire in this vid........ holy smokes! secondly, you're right but i have never seen CS without an ensemble of killer musicians around him depending on what musical phase he was in, and 3rd, even though I was too young too appreciate it then, his early lineup highlighted in the 1970 live at tanglewood is insane.
@@taboty nope, this was the start, the lineup had so many changes but the ultimate was once they had the trio of Raul Rekow/Armando Peraza, and Orestes Vilato on percussion, their combination with Graham Lear on drums was the best percussion section in history. All of their lineups from 76 to 85 were amazing, if only they would have kept Tom Coster on keys instead of Chester Thompson though, Coster was a much better player with far more vast of a sound than Thompsons chirpy casio sound.

I love Carlos, he is my co-favourite guitarist along with the almighty Jeff beck, I cannot choose between them, and have seen both more than twice live. But the particular piece, Carlos really let's it fly! He really Rocks out, and I love it !!
I attended this taping ( In the first row ) and was won of the best Santana concerts I have ever gone to! Gato Barberi and Tower of Power were also on this taping. Finally I got to meet the very humble Carlos during break, just awesome!!
When Carlos was a disciple of Sri Chinmoy and called himself Devadip, I like that style of playing more than the current one, he mixed Jazz, Blues and Latin rhythms, he used a Yamaha SG2000 that was based on a Les Paul Standard with a Mesa Boogie MKII, a MuTron wah and a Big Muff used as a booster.
At 5:26 the secret to Santana's sustain is revealed... and the best part starts at 6:00 when they all switch instruments... Raul takes the lead with the bongos, Chepito moves to the congas, Carlos leaves the guitar and takes the congas too, and Greg moves to the keyboards... This was so awesome!
This was one of the most refreshing, soul satisfying, total Carlos encompassing tunes of the era, THEY ROCKED this everytime I saw them. They played the Chicago Amphitheater with Bobby Womack as the warm up. Carlos came on stage and I fought my way to the front, climbed on stage and let the Marshall blow my ear out!!!

As much as i love this, I love the Cal Jam II version even more - and it was re-released as part of the CD "Essential Santana" - couldn't believe it was still around - my brother found it!
JustAintThatWay Many, many guitarists have lost their distinctive sound joining the PRS army : Ted Nugent, Geoff Whitehorn, Al Di Meola, Tom Johnston, Joe Walsh, Rick Derringer, Neal Schon . . . Michael J. Fox ?
What are you talking about? Rory is not? Rick Derringer, Mark Farner, Joe Walsh, Toy Caldwell, John Cipollina among others that are nothing else is ...?
OK. It's just a question of personal taste. Nobody seems to miss Satriani, Van Halen, Blackmore, Iommy, Page, Zappa, Django R., W. Montgomery ... and so many others, really great myths. PS - By the way , I forgot to include Allan Holdsworth, Jan Akkerman, Dean Brown and . . .
Got it! I agree with most of you mentioned and also had estranged the lack of Holdsworth and Akkerman, for example. Even though I am a fan of Mark Farner (in my adolescence in the early 70s, I was a big fan of Grand Funk), Joe Walsh and Rick Derringer, my admiration for them is mainly as composers and not just as guitar players. John Cipollina I really did not like and Toy Caldwell, (I was also a fan of the Marshall Tucker Band for a while) .. well, I never considered a great guitar player! I did not understand about Rory Gallagher because I know of his importance as an innovative, among other things. But it is normal, there are some that are considered gods and don't tell me virtually nothing, but most of you also mentioned are my idols too!
