Little bit more information about Una and the Lion -The design is an unusual one for a British coin and has given the coin its familiar name of the Una and the lion five-pound piece. Beautiful though it undoubtedly is, the coin has been criticised for being too medalic. In a sense this is unfair since the Royal Mint records contain no evidence that the Unas were ever to be struck for circulation. On the contrary, all the indications are that they were never intended to be anything other than proof coins and that they were primarily made for inclusion in the specimen sets of the first Victorian coins. These sets, dated 1839, were finally ready for distribution to collectors in 1843, but the Una in fact continued to be struck on occasion long after the sets had been completed.
Allegorical figure on the reverse depicts Queen Victoria in the form of Una, or "Truth" (true). Una - the main character works of Edmund Spenser "Faerie Queene", written between 1590 and 1611. Leo is also part of Spencer, is often identified with the British lion. Leo, along with the queen symbolizes the Queen as the formal head of state and led her to the British people. Reverse legend means "Lord, protect my steps"
There was only around 400 pieces minted and yet for a rare coin it is surprising how many variations can be found among the surviving pieces. There are different metals, differing types of edge, differing patterns of ornamentation on the queen’s hairbands, and the different reverse reading DIRIGIT in the inscription instead of DIRIGE

Thanks so much for that great comments and all of the additional information. I would love to see the royal mint produce a new five sovereign piece however I guess we may have to wait until 2039 for that.

The Una and the 1770 Pr-65 1/2 penny ... wow ! The kind of coins you can say you are lucky to see in person, can't even imagine to hold one in my hand ! For the people who are far from U.K, ( canada for me ) having this video ( i think you are the first to show these early proof in a public video ) is probably the nearest we will be to that absolute masterpiece of my favorite artist, Leonard C Wyon.
Very nice video quality as always !

Queen Victoria as Una from Spenser's 1590 poem is the 1st time the monarch was depicted as a fictional character. For a 374 year old hammered coin, the Charles I is in amazing condition.👍

It would be a real luxury to see all of those coins highlighted. Thanks, Numi. On a 1964 visit to the British Museum, I had the privilege of holding their Una and the Lion in my hand along with other notable old gold coins. It was quite a day!
