  • The British gold sovereign is becoming more and more connected and desired throughout the world. A beautiful 1984 Proof Sovereign arrived and what better excuse to take a look at the 80s 90s and 2000s in terms of Sovereigns and portraits could there be?

    I really like the gold sovereign, it's just not in my budget to collect them, so I appreciate seeing them on your channel.

    When I watch your unboxing videos it is like window shopping. This post is more like a master class. Please do more of these when you have the time.

    I recently picked up the same coin for US$304 ($400 Cdn) at my local bullion dealer of all places. Had my choice of a few Edward VII & George V bullion sovereigns and the 84 proof for the same price so I obviously grabbed the proof.

    Very nice coin. I bought one off eBay a few months back. I took it to the Long Beach coin show a few weeks ago and gave it to NGC for grading. When it comes back I'll let you know what grad they gave it. I also asked them to grad my 2 struck on the day sovereign. They claimed they had no clue of what they were. And would only give me a 200 Anniversary label. Do you think that's ok or should it say stuck on the day? I have all the original boxes and receipts. I now have them posted on eBay.
    Thanks Silver King

      They will give it a 200 anniversary Plain Edge designation and rated as MS DPL. It will not say strike on the day but it does not matter.

    Will the Royal Canadian Mint ever mint Sovereigns again?

    Cheers, Numi. Enjoyed this video, very engaging and educational. As a rule, I prefer to keep Proof Sovereigns in their original box rather than getting them slabbed by NGC, unless they’re particularly rare. I’ve got a couple of proofs like this that aren’t in the best condition (e.g. fingerprints from previous owner!), do you think these could be sent to NCS for conservation and returned to me without having to go through the slabbing process with NGC?

      A gentle application of dish detergent and good rinse under the tap will get rid of finger prints on gold. Pat dry with paper towel.

      I have found that hot water and good quality washing up liquid like fairy liquid works very well the problem is drying them without any marks on them but generally fingerprints are easily removed. Up to last year I kept my proof Sovereigns in their original boxes and 2/3 are still in their original boxes however. I can see, particularly for special date sovereigns it makes some sense to have them slabbed and graded.

    Always enjoy watching your sovereign videos. Especially timely for me since I started watching The Crown on Netflix. I've also managed to pick up a few proof sovereigns on eBay for a little over $300, so patience can pay off.

    Very informative, thank you. I don't have any sovereigns and they'll most probably be forever out of my league. Nice to see yours though, thanks for sharing. :D

    Thanks for the mintage numbers Numi, they cleared up some confusion for me. I have 13,000 for the 1985 five sovereign proof. Does that agree with your records?

      maximum issue was 25,500 proof of which 12,500 reserved in the 4 coin set.marse and spinks has the single proof at 11,393

      @meteoman7958 6 лет назад

      Thanks birdman, so that looks like 23,893 were issued if there were in fact 12,500 4 coin sets sold.
