It isn't very common, so you definitely have to look for it. I used canned key lime pie filling from Lucky Leaf, if I remember correctly. If you live in the US, you should be able to find it at a place like Walmart, Meijer, or even online. 🍈🥧

I checked the ingredients for the key lime pie filling, and I think it's a custard rather than a curd (the ingredients list includes modified food starch--corn specifically--but no egg or egg substitute on the list). Good question--yes you can! Here on my channel I have a ton of dump cake recipes: apple, strawberry, blueberry, lemon--just pick the type of pie filling and/or cake mix you want to use, and you can make a ton of versions. 👨🍳
A couple of questions: can you just mix the lime juice and extract into the pie filling? Also with the butter, could you cut it into the cake mix - like how you would for biscuits? Would it change the consistency of the cake topping? I would very much love to try this.

However, some dump cake purists say that this type of dessert should be made without mixing ingredients, but you definitely can.
