    I own both the Kodiak 10 X 14 and the Springbar Compact. Say what you will, but the Springbar canvas is clearly better than the Kodiak and its stitching and reinforcements are better than the Kodiak. However, the Kodiak canvas is really good and the tent, if taken care of, will last a lifetime. And I've only got one life, so that's good enough. If I were an outfitter and needed a tent to endure constant use, I'd buy a Springbar. But I only car camp 10-12 nights a year, so the extra expense doesn't make sense.

    Great comparison, that said, the thing that has swayed my purchasing decision is something not mentioned. Springbar produces a tent that can accommodate a wood stove to extend camping well into the colder months.

      Kodiak's Cabin Lodge tents are designed for stove use as well.

    • @stephenyoung4117
      @stephenyoung4117 Год назад

      @@ericfricke4512 The cabin lodge is a nice tent but it is not a springbar design or a kodiak flex bow design as they call it, and takes more time to put up and is more of a challenge for one person it a windy environment which is where these tents shine over nylon tents. It is more appropriate for a longer term camp like hunt camp especially if you use the available annex. The Classic Jack 140 by Springbar is in a class by itself. It also has a port for electrical and or propane lines. I think the Springbar is better for the two or three day camp where you want the comfort and breathability of canvas along with wood stove option for cold weather. Springbar also makes a snow load kit which kodiak does not. They also have the stormfly, nylon shield for keeping the canvas roof and upper sidewalls dry and adding wind resistance and snow resistance.

    I can’t say I am fanatical about my kodiak tent. The original American made spring bar tents were more money. The Kodiak was affordable and pretty well made. I will say my Kodiak tent developed a tear in the seam. I sent pictures to Kodiak and a shout time later they sent a shipping label and in a few weeks I received a new tent body. Pretty good. Iam sure spring bar would do the same.

      From what I've heard both company's do really well with warranty work, but neither myself nor my Kodiak-owning brother-in-law has had to test this.

    We’ve used our 10x14’ Kodiak deluxe flex-bow heavily for the past 5 years & can comment on things u mentioned that are the same for the flex-bow model:
    •Same setup (easily done via 1 adult)
    •Roof tension also applied via ceiling side flex-bars.
    •Gear Loft also reduces height @ 1 end - although it does appear to be smaller than ur SB (falls short of queen air mattress end).
    •No additional awning room available. Instead Kodiak offers an optional vestibule which attaches to end of awning - adding frame support to awning, gear storage/cooking area, and helps shade tent. (Without vestibule the awning has only guide-line support & requires a paint pole in the center to prevent sagging.)
    •Ceiling also 10 oz hydro-canvas (walls only 8.5 oz).
    •Door zippers also quite firm & can get stuck a bit if staked down too tightly (doors need to be closed when staking tent & adjustable guide-line hooks allow it to be loosened if needed).
    •Both tent & frame bags are canvas: Tent bag is a large flat canvas strip thats rolled around the tent & clipped down - like an envelope. Pole frame bag is canvas with a cinch end (ours developed tear after few years which I had to sew up).
    •2 small slopped triangle vents (interior zip-open) are located on side walls just below ceiling ridge. Exterior shield allows them to remain open in rain/show (the newer flex-bow models have large side windows similar to ur SB tho).
    •Both front & back of tent have a Door + Side window. Makes it easily to grab something from inside without stepping in or removing shoes. (Having 2 exit points is REALLY nice when sleeping more than 3 ppl).
    •Flex-Bow models (at least ours) do not have zip-hole for power cords.
    It does appear the SB is made better overall when considering the seams, thicker wall canvas, & design features such as the base rope. There’s also the fact that Kodiak is made outside the US & I’ve read some reviews from people who appear to have received lemons…imagine it would be easier to get help from SB than Kodiak if that happens.
    But as a female who goes on extended trips & is extremely picky, I’ve been smitten with our kodiak & would happily buy another. I suppose it just depends on pricing & which features matter to the person buying. Great video!

    I grew up in one of these spring bars. Since my dad bought the firest addition model..made here in Utah. Camping every summer and into winter hunting. I'm 41 now. Still use it. Endless memories wasn't Camping 🏕 without the tent. Just buy anything and just get out and go. Is what matters the most. Take your Kids parents friends. All about the adventure . ✨️

    • @ForgottenWaypoints
      @ForgottenWaypoints  2 года назад +2

      We slept in ours just last week during the wind and I had forgotten how quiet it was in the wind. All you could hear were the zippers clinking as if they were wind chimes.
      When it's just the boys and I, we use the ARB awning annex-room as it's quicker, lighter, and faster, but the synthetic material just makes a ton of noise at night. Canvas is amazing.
      And I totally agree with your last statement. The #1 priority is just to go. Gear is fun, and we all enjoy saving for it and mulling over spec sheets and performance, but just going out and making memories is key.

    It's good to see that Kodiak has made their own Cabin Design tent, rather than just solely existing off stealing Springbar's hard-earned brand and intellectual property. I'd still buy Springbar on principle alone though.

    The best tent for me is the Springbar 11x10 Family Traveler with awning that I paid $3 25yrs ago at a Thrift Store. I did not want it at first but my arm was twisted & for that price I had nothing to loose. I didn’t know anything about them & I poked a hole in the roof trying to set it up with the poles inside. Luckily Kirham’s is an hour away & I happend to be in the area. They gave me instructions on how to set it up & free material to patch it. Did buy some new end caps & metal tips to replace the broken plastic ones. Dad sewed it with the sewing machine & sewed one of the rod sleeves that was coming apart. The stakes where bent & I got some big nails with washers to stake it down. It’s the best tent I ever had & one I can leave stuff up against the sides when it rains without getting wet. Eventually the pole bag got torn & one of the main poles got bent. I got a new pole bag & the new poles are stronger. The tent was well used before I got it & still keeps me dry. If it was my guess I would have to say this tent was made in the 60’s or 70’s. They cost about $85 back then & now if I get one close to mine it’s $1200.

      Donzal Worthmore as far as I know the Springbar has been vinyl for quite some time. Mine is from the 80s and it had a vinyl floor with a woven reinforcement of some kind in it. Unless you set up your tent on sharp rocks or a stick or something like that, you won’t have any problems. It’s pretty thick and tough

    Go for a flex tent, these cabin tents are a pain in the butt to setup and you'll never want to do it again. in addition to 30 poles for cabin tents, you've got tension the sides I believe like my Coleman. The flex tents (white duck, springbar, other kodiaks) have a few easy poles and quick setup, stay away from cabin tents unless you have 2 people and 45 mins of time to setup

    Springbar is the way to go. I'm 67 and I can set up my Family Camper 10x14 by myself in 25 minutes from start to finish. My buddy's Kodiak is impossible to set up by yourself. Pay the extra $$ and do yourself a favor with Springbar. BTW in a 35mph wind in November the Springbar handles it like an absolute Champ. I can go anywhere with my tent and by myself.

    Pricing on the Kodiak must have gone up quite a bit over the past 3 years. When I bought mine, a 10x14 Kodiak, it was $450 at Cabelas. Similar Springbar was $799. Having slept numerous nights in the Springbar while on Boy Scout campouts, I’d say they are comparable in quality, but it does seem like the Springbar is built slightly better. Definitely wasn’t worth the price difference then but if it were only $100, I might have gone for the Springbar. Both good tents, though.

      I just went off prices on Amazon at the moment, I'm sure they fluctuate. In fact the classic jack is sold out and the highline springbar is $599 if I remember right. I should post links to various models in my description. They are both great tents.

    I've been looking for a new winter tent for me and my 2 dogs. A 10x10 would work great with my wood stove. I think I'll go with the Kodiak though, for only 1 reason, the price. For the money I would save, I could spend on a few nice accessories to go with it.

    Good review on both but I feel like you are comparing apples and rocks . I understand that you only had the cabin style Kodiak tent but when you really look at them the flex bow would be the one to compare because they are so similar in design and set up . The things that make these two tents so nice is the interior space ,setup ,head room and both are excellent in the wind and rain when you compare the 10x10 Springbar and the Kodiak flex bow . You are absolutely right you can’t go wrong with either they both are high quality and will last a long time .
    Thanks for taking the time for the reviews .
    Happy Trails

    I own the Kodiak 10x14 and it’s been through a couple of snowy Elk seasons. It performed well. I had a tent manufacturer put in a stove jack and use a kni-co stove. It kept me warm all night. The Kodiak is made in China and I think the Jack is made in the US. I wish I had bought the Jack spring bar. I really dislike giving the Chinese my business!

    • @ForgottenWaypoints
      @ForgottenWaypoints  2 года назад +2

      The Jack is also Chinese sewn. Springbar has a US lineup, but their is a waiting list and it is double the cost. I wanted the US tent too, as it is sewn locally for me, just up the freeway, but I couldn't get one.

    my sister used and borrowed my parents 4 person tent as they didn't have one. they ripped it up and left trash allll over my parent's tent. it was a nightmare and there was mold all up in the tent as it wasn't aired out and the tent poles were broken. i am looking around for a good tent for myself and maybe someone i could bring along with me but something that i cant just freely stand up in cause i am a tall dude and staying hunched over for a time is not too comfortable. i have my eyes on this tent not only cause of the fact its made out of canvas (I'm a sucker for classic old rugged materials for the sake of comfort and durability), but also for the fact that i can freely stand up in it without having to REALLY break the bank. would i want to go backpacking with this thing? no, not at all.. but if i could have the accessibility and the means of moving a tent like a kodiak or a springbar on my own, i would totally do that without a problem at all. kinda hoping i can get myself another job since i am currently unemployed so i can pick up this bad boy. maybe skip the cot and use an inflatable mattress with a sleeping bag. cozy thoughts for a future cozy camper/fisherman! ^_^

    • @ForgottenWaypoints
      @ForgottenWaypoints  3 года назад +1

      I've used both. Going solo, cots are way more comfortable. But since my boys go with me, we've been using air mattresses to save space on the interior.
      We've since purchased an awning and annex room. I really like that too, though I haven't used it as often. It's not as durable as a canvas Springbar, but it packs up much smaller and stakes are not required for pitching (which is what we needed for the White Rim Trail as the surface of the campsites are all rock.

    Which tent would be easier to turn upside down it the bottom needed to dry before packing it up?

    • @ForgottenWaypoints
      @ForgottenWaypoints  4 года назад +2

      Good question. Both my BIL and I use ground tarps and have yet to have any issues with condensation/dew on the actual tent floor. If you needed to flip the tent, either would be really easy to roll/flip. Both tents "square up" to the floor quickly and easily and are folded in thirds prior to rolling up.
      I found both brands much easier to perform this task than say a dome tent.
