Kodiak Canvas Tent - Review / Overview

- I've had this Kodiak Canvas Flex Bow 10x14 Deluxe for 4 years at the time of the video. I've taken it on various Mule Deer, Whitetail, and Coues hunts across 5 states, totaling 50+ nights of use. These are my thoughts thus far. Check out my hunt videos to see the tent in action.
I think I have watched pretty much all reviews on this tent and must say, this was down and dirty the most straight forward, to the point one I have seen yet. Living in Louisiana my main concern with this tent is the setup to dry it out throughouly after use. I would keep it in the house in my gear room, however. I have also been considering the North Face Wiwonna but for few dollars more the Kodiak really makes the decision a tough one.....mold being my primary consideration. BTW, before I lost my wife to Covid back in 2020, we would spend a month on the road fly fishing. We spent a lot of time around the Mackay area. I love Copper Basin. Did a float on the Snake as a bucket list item and it was worth every single penny of it. Idaho is such an incredible state. If I were still young I would move there in a heartbeat. The people are so down to earth. The Idaho legislature needs to pass a law that no one west of Idaho can move there...just kidding or course.
Glad the video sparked some memories for you, and sorry to hear about your loss. I don’t think you’d be disappointed with the Kodiak Canvas.
great tent, had mine for over 10 years and just took it on another trip to RMNP and its such a solid tent! It breathes so well, so solid in storms, so water proof...it's truly a home away from home! It's also the max size for most campground tent pads but man it's like a palace inside!
The best canvas tent out there! I’ve had my 10x14 deluxe for about 6 years and love it. I put a stove jack in mine, and run a small wood stove. Great vid! 👍🏼
You jack the side I assume, not the ceiling? A wood stove seems like it would certainly elevate the rustic vibe versus propane, and pump off more heat. The buddy heater is just so convenient. Thanks for watching again Garald 👍🏼
@@toddharney yes through the side. I sent you a vid on your Instagram. I love the stove but you’re only getting 3 people in it with the stove.
Ive got the 10x10 and i got the added vestibule for it, i just love my base camp, makes being outdoors just that much more comfortable, hello from alaska 🖐
Enjoyed this! I've also got the 10x14, and have loved using it for camping, hunting, you name it! We also do the Buddy heater scenario and I agree it keeps things toasty and very pleasant when it's pretty cold outside! Thanks for sharing this video!
I have the 10x14 flex bow VX ( the end walls open also ) wind ,rain , sleet , snow , hot weather awesome tent . It’s my wife and I cat and dog , you’re right on with the Mr Buddy heater when it’s cold out it’s toasty inside. I’m 74 and I was a little skeptical when I purchased it all the reviews made it sound so easy to set up and I was happy to find out it was true and with the simple design I was not sure if would do good in the wind ( living in Montana) no problem. Thanks for your take on the tent , it really is worth the price .
I have the same tent and love it. Kodiak makes the ground tarp for under tent. Here in Florida I use air conditioning not heat in my tent. Perfect. Nice video.
Very good. I sold my camper, bought a Gazelle T4 that I really like. But, for longer trips like my January mule deer hunt this year, I’m thinking of getting one of these.
Hint? When it rains angle the awning to one side - - Hint 2? You don't have to stand on the tent - - I lived in my Kodiak for 5 years as a camp manager, rain, snow, wind. it held up wonderful.
Great review. I really enjoy simple, get to the points we all want to see reviews.
Thank you! Great service you provided. Appreciated the set up and take down parts.
Glad to help
bout to take a 3 week pnw camping trip with my gf and you absolutely sold us on this. the 'not wanting to take the tent down for a week because its a chore' is exactly what led me to this review and that's a delight to hear. good hunting out there friend and stay safe. thanks a bunch!
Glad it was helpful, hope you got one.
@@toddharney we did, it's absolutely amazing!!!
Amigos, I just ordered the 10x10 for my winter camping trips and January deer hunt in NM. Looking forward to it.
I have the same tent and absolutely love it. I would like to eventually add a stove jack to it.
I would like to mention that I have never had to step on the sides of the tent in order to set it up. I do however kneel on the edge instead. Keeps the mud and dirt off.
I have the 10x10 and love it! Got in a hurry and started pulling stakes before removing the poles, it came loose and popped me in the back of the head. Won’t make that mistake again.
Probably happened with nobody around to laugh about it with too! Thanks for watching pal.
If you got 2 sets of XL Disco-bed bunk bed cots and put them on each end, you could sleep 4 guys and still have tons of space in the middle. We have the 9x12 with the 8x8 porch and absolutely love it!
Been thinking about bunk cots, I’ll look that model up. Thank you.
You can fit two sets of Disco beds in the 9x12? Thanks.
Great video man!!! Just got mine today. Ready to do some fun adventures where I live here in Northern Nevada. I'd sure love to know whereabouts this video was shot, that looks like an awesome campspot on that river!
Looks awesome might have to pick one up as im currently using my grandfathers old bsa canvas tent. The repairs are just getting out of hand lol
Good review but I’m curious what coat you are wearing I dig it
That’s a Stone Glacier Cirque jacket. Nice one.
Have you tried putting the top together and lifting before putting steaks? Is this possible so ya dont have to walk on side. The vertical poles pin down bottom tabs. Then go around pull taught and add steaks? Id like to get this just dont like walking all over it.
@@TommyHobbs-ee8zo Yeah that’s a great idea, and it would certainly keep you from having to step on the exterior walls. Good thinking!
Are you letting the heater run all night? If so about how long does a 20 pound propane tank last? Going out of state this year and trying to figure out how to stay warm besides just my sleeping bag.
I’ve gone 7 nights running all night on low, plus using the same tank to cook and still didn’t run out. They don’t use much fuel.
I got same tent about 15 yrs ago. Big buddy and 20 lb propane will go 10 nights with some to spare. Nighttime temps in single digits, teens and twenties. Zero degree bag and wear long undies. Gatorade bottle nearby and big buddy within arms reach of cot. Keep the pilot light on at night so I can crank up the heat in the morning.
Bombproof and greeeeat quality!! Love mine!!
Kodiak 10x10 VX was my first Canvas tent after having so many synthetic mountaineering tents. Totally fell in love with canvas tents.
The best thing I did was sew in a stove jack and bought a Winnerwell wood stove. Totally changed tent camping.
I'm not gonna say Kodiak makes a bad tent. I still have mine and it's seen severe weather. 40-50 mph winds and heavy snow with no issues. I honestly thought the thing wont last the night. But damn, that tent held up great.
That said, I've since bought a Springbar,, the customer service, the canvas used is better in my opinion, Made in America... I could see a difference.
Now.. Is it worth the cost difference? That's a subjective question.
If you use it trip after trip after trip, I think so.
If its one week a year, maybe save your money and spend it on the gas to go someplace.
Todd, I think your point of view, and the set up tutorial is spot on about this tent.
Two thumbs up!!
You guys are the common representation of the people who use this stuff.
But man,, get a wood stove and pitch the Mr. Buddy! I promise you won't regret it.
Cheers
Thanks for the detailed insight Jeffrey. When this tent dies I’ll peek at Made in USA options, but not likely before then. I’ll likely install a jack and switch to wood burning this year. I know for certain you can’t beat it for the feel of coziness.
Great stuff! 👍
I added a winnerwell stove and winnerwell fast fold oven, heat the tent and have a hot oven to warm foods is great after a long day of hunting!
Thanks for showing how to fold it up!!
Great review. Thanks for taking the time to put the video together. What is the brand of the 10x12 Canvas Tarp that you're going to use for underneath?
I don’t even know if it has a brand. Just a heavy duty canvas tarp from a local “everything” supply store.
Nice review, what a rad area. Is that down on the Owyee in southwestern Idaho?
Pretty close. That’s the Snake there.
This looks like central/eastern Washington?
We have a 10 x 10 and a 10 x 14. Love them both. Get a taller cot and gear can go underneath.
Good video
Your forgot about using a tennis ball on the end of an extendable mop stick to put in the middle of the awning fabric.
I didn’t forget, just didn’t know! Thanks for the recommendation.
yeah it sucks for tall people. and when that rain poors, angle one pole at am angle and dig a ditch moat for the castle. Have had mine since 2011 @@toddharney
I like this tent.....
As an older man who has problems getting up and down I see several major problems, I can set up an Alaknak but not this one plus it cost twice as much not worth it to me.
6:20 sounds about right. Haha!
use eternabond to seal the holes.
Show us how it holds up to 80 mile an winds..my white duck canvas bell tent has no problems with that..
I’ll keep an eye on the wind forecast.
@toddharney if the wind's 80mph 90% of us are going to pack up anyway. Cant please everyone lmao
Never walk on a tent
Made in USA is about an employment aspect. WTF.
