2024 Alaska Dall Sheep Hunt - Highlight Reel
In August of 2024, I had the pleasure of guiding Jason Tucker to his second Alaska Dall ram. This was an amazing hunt that provided us all of the emotional and physical challenges that make sheep hunting so special. Lance Bernal, who I guided to a beautiful full curl ram in 2023, returned as a packer on this hunt. Thank you to Jason and Lance for your toughness and dedication to making such a successful and memorable adventure. This hunt was guided under Eric Lee's Alaska Adventure Services.

How To Debone / Bone Out Elk or Deer Quarters with Meat Fully Intact

This is the most clean and efficient way I've found to remove the bones from big game shoulders and hind quarters. Highly convenient with very little waste, since the major muscles remain intact for minimal increase in surface area air exposure. Great video, nice to see a hunter not playing to the camera but documenting a solo hunt. Good video overall, but I have some constructive criticism; don't spend half the video complaining that the bucks aren't as big as you'd hoped. Most of us average hunters don't get to be so picky and are lucky to harvest anything. I realize you want to make an epic video with an epic result, but acting like you might not even shoot one because it's only a 4x4 is just snobby. And yes, I have killed my share of bucks, but I hunt archery and for the meat, not the antlers. Just keep in mind that being too picky makes you seem ungrateful and unrelatable. That's all. Otherwise, good job.

    Good hunting and good times. Been mountain hunting whitetails in N. Idaho for 30 years now and you just never know what will pop out. We always quarter and bone out and was wondering why you guys pack out the lower leg? Sometimes I will leave in the big bone and take out the calf muscle bone to save weight. We hang in bags so no bones necessary.

    What brand was the dyneema pack cover?

    • @toddharney
      @toddharney 2 месяца назад

      Mountain Laurel Designs. The Dyneema cover has held up surprisingly well for 3 sheep hunts and various other lower 48 adventurers. I think I’ll switch back to sil-nylon this season though. Dyneema is loud in the wind and brush as a pack cover, and it’s pretty prone to puncture holes and abrasion.

    What do you typically use the quartered leg meat for? Do you grind it up into ground meat for burgers/other things, make sausage, jerky, throw it in a stew, cut for steaks, all of the above?

    • @toddharney
      @toddharney 3 месяца назад

      All of the above. Front quarters make good grind and jerky, hind quarters are full of good steaks, roasts, and more for the grind pile. 15-20% beef fat ground with the lean elk meat makes for some excellent burger.

      @@toddharney thanks for the reply! I’m going big game hunting my first time in Oregon this year and am trying to gather all this type of info ahead of time. Wasn’t raised in a hunting family so I’m learning all this on my own at 30 years old; bit daunting but I’m having a ton of fun. @@MountainMace Nice, can’t think of a better thing to get into later in life than hunting. By 20% beef fat I mean go to a butcher and have him save you pure beef fat trimming. I think I have watched pretty much all reviews on this tent and must say, this was down and dirty the most straight forward, to the point one I have seen yet. Living in Louisiana my main concern with this tent is the setup to dry it out throughouly after use. I would keep it in the house in my gear room, however. I have also been considering the North Face Wiwonna but for few dollars more the Kodiak really makes the decision a tough one.....mold being my primary consideration. BTW, before I lost my wife to Covid back in 2020, we would spend a month on the road fly fishing. We spent a lot of time around the Mackay area. I love Copper Basin. Did a float on the Snake as a bucket list item and it was worth every single penny of it. Idaho is such an incredible state. If I were still young I would move there in a heartbeat. The people are so down to earth. The Idaho legislature needs to pass a law that no one west of Idaho can move there...just kidding or course.
