    It is a fantastic video to understand Gum over Pt-Pd print. I need to go through couple of times to understand fully and start printing. I will ask you couple of questions where ever I encounter any confusion, I hope you won't mind. Let me begin soon with Kalli type as I wrote to you in my earlier mail that I can't imagine to buy Palladium now. Thank you very much for your class, very much helpful.

    Great video. Very inspiring!.
    I'm trying to figure out how to make my alternative process "darkroom" environmentally friendly. I live on an island in N. Wisconsin and don't want to mucky up the septic tank!
    fyi... your product links to Bostick & Sullivan don't work. The links take you to an empty cart or a broken link.

    • @BillSchwab
      @BillSchwab  Год назад

      Thanks for the heads up on the links. I’ll correct them. They must’ve changed some thing. I understand your point as I live out in the woods. I have a separate septic for my studio, but I’m still careful about what I put in there. All of my dangerous chemicals get put into a holding tank with a plastic liner and I allow them to evaporate off. And then wrap the plastic up every year or so and take it into waste management. Hope this helps! Good luck with your set up! Keep me posted.

    Well done instructional video and I love the results of the process. I have been gum printing and platinum/palladium printing for several years, but I have never combined the processes. I am curious what paper you are using and are you pre-shrinking it. Thanks Bill!

    • @BillSchwab
      @BillSchwab  2 года назад

      Hi Larry! Thank you! Glad you like it. Yes, the two processes work really well together. The paper I’m using here is Hahnemuhle platinum rag. It’s perfect for the process because it doesn’t need treatment or pre-shrinking. However, if you were going to use other papers, I would consider oxalic acid treatment and pre-shrinking. Especially for larger prints.

      HPR has become my paper of choice for Platinum, but I have never tried it for gum. I will give this a try. Thanks Bill.

      @@lhuhnphotography I think you’ll like it. My go to for gum used to be Rives BFK, but I’ve really grown to like the HPR for the simple reason that it is easy and consistent.

    Hey Bill, wondering what was the name of the red color your used on the second pass for the shadow regions? Thanks!

    • @BillSchwab

      Hi Steve. I used a burnt umber with a little bit of magenta mixed in. Just to warm it up a little bit more. And yes… Still working on Svalbard. What is the medical marijuana doing the finish up on Iceland right itnow and your text got away from me there.

    Now I am planning to start Gum on Palladium process. Watching your video for couple of times one thing is not clear to me, could you please help me out? After the sizing the paper, I need to coat the paper with gum, ammonium dichromate & colour. I want to know what would be the percentage of Gum in the solution? how much Gum I need to use in 100 ml water? What I understood from your video Ammonium Bichromate solution would be 30%. Also the final mixture of gum & Ammonium Dichromate with colour would be same amount or different? Kindly help me out about this confusion.

      Hi Brian! Thank you! Glad you liked it. I use Daniel Smith pigments for the time being. The colors I am using for this video were the French ocher and the Magenta, but I will check further on that.

      @BillSchwab  2 года назад

      Hi Jim. Thanks for asking. Yes, I do several of them a year. I’m looking to do one in May as a matter of fact, so stay tuned. You can go to my website at www.billschwab.com and there is a subscription link there. Get on my newsletter and you’ll definitely find out. I also do private one on ones. Just send an email through my contact form on my website as well. Thanks again! It really is a good workshop and you learn a lot more than what I can teach you in the videos.

    Wondering how the gum layer affects the archivability of the print.

    • @BillSchwab
      @BillSchwab  Год назад

      Hi Gerry. I’m not really sure chemically how archival it might be, but with proper washing and sizing, I don’t think it should have much effect on the longevity of the print. There are some very early gum over prints by Steichen, Carl Struss, etc. that are just as beautiful today as they were over 100 years ago. But it’s a great question. I’ll see if I can find out more. thanks for watching and commenting! It’s a process that works great with wet plate images.

    Fantastic video, really well done. Thank you. I spent years in darkrooms before moving onto medium format digital, but have to admit, I'm drawn to back to this process. I love the richness and overall look of the prints but I do have environmental concerns. I always felt bad sending all those chemicals to the oceans, which is where it ends up, and now, having transplanted from NYC to LA, I also can't get past the running of clear clean drinking water down the drain for a print when I see our water sources drying up each day. I recently sold my Pentax 645 because I couldn't stand the water waste of developing the film. Have you ever or do you know of any studies on the environmental impacts of creating one of these prints? Especially when you think of the thousands if not millions of prints being created with any film/negative based processes. It's an interesting dilemma, art vs survival.

    • @BillSchwab
      @BillSchwab  2 года назад

      The environmental impact of creating these one of these prints is minuscule in comparison to the environmental impact to create all of the toilet paper you use in a year alone. That’s not to mention everything else. I’m not saying there’s not some impact, I’m just thinking that there might be a little bit of over thinking of it here. Do you have an electric car? Do you not travel? I would think that you would have to think of it in much broader terms.

    • @BillSchwab
      @BillSchwab  2 года назад

      I’m really not trying to be facetious here and I appreciate your kind comments on the video. I’ve been in photography as my profession for a long time and yes, I’ve created a lot of waste. All I can do now is be conscious of making as small a footprint as possible while enjoying the rest of the time I have on earth in the best way I know. It happens to be through my work which in comparison to a lot of things that are going on these days has very little impact at all.
      If you’re feeling the way you do, then by all means, don’t add to it. But it certainly is a good way to spend one’s time. And again, if you’re going to think about it in these terms, think about the environmental impact that went into creating just the device you’re tapping this out on now. In any event, I hope you can find some pleasure with your work in some low impact way. All best to you.

    Hey!
    My post wasn't a attack on what you do, I've been in the game longer than you and dare say I've dumped way more crap down the sewer than you. I was just putting it out there for thought. You know, maybe one less minute of rinsing, etc. etc. Or, you could just say the world is in such disarray that nothing makes any difference anyway, so why even think about it, and you might be right. As far as "thinking in broader terms", my experience is that doesn't get much done out there in the world, that most significant change starts from within, and branches out from there. But again, just one man's opinion. Sorry to barge into your page with this, I really just adding a little food for thought. I do really love what you do.
