On H.A.M., Kanye West and Jay-Z come together like it's amateur hour over a cheap beat with even cheaper rhymes. I understood from the beginning that this upcoming album wasn't going to blow away the epic beats on MBDTF, but was it wrong of me to at least expect it to be decent?
Kanye and Jay-Z don't work together as much as they just do their own thing, which does nothing for the track overall. Though I've enjoyed both of these guys in their solo endeavors, what makes them getting together on this song so special?
What do you think of this track? What should II review next?

@jpoodle It's pretty hard to take this comment seriously when you don't know "Hippa to da Hoppa" is one of the best tracks on Ol' Dirty Bastard's first album... :-l
hippa to da hoppa and ya just don't stoppa
@Idnuf636 I think they performed together well on Monster, but then again there were a lotta personalities on that track. Was just hoping the same magic would happen here, but didn't find it...
@ethansepiphany I know. After all those beats on MBDTF, you'd figure Kanye would listen to this and shake his head.
I think the SNL skit comparison is the most accurate. It's sounds like someone made it at home at 4 in the morning, while they were hittin' blunts and forties. I like Jay-z's rap, but it doesn't strike me as something that would have taken him long to create. The beat to me screams cheap, shotty production.
PLEASE. FOR THE LOVE OF GOD REVIEW THE NEW FLYING LOTUS COSMOGRAMMA ALTERNATIVE TAKES! ~9 TRACKS. It's not really an album but each of these tracks are gorgeous
@Goatsepupu Yeah, I need to go seek out some better music to review. Seems like listening to the majority opinion is getting me in a lotta trouble these days.
@jamesandjackproducts Buffalo '66 and Akira.
I think a 4 is perfect for this song. There was no cohesion. No tag team on any part of it... and it just wasn't as epic or dope per say, as it shoulda been. Its not garbage as some reviews have made it out to be, but the beat was nearly trash imo.
I didn't expect much from Kanye or Jay-Z so no surprise for me on the lyrics; I must say that their beats are often fantastic. I did think this beat was passable my first time through but it's not near the quality I would normally expect.
Thanks Anthony, you're my new musical Silver Surfer.
-Galactus
I just thought of the best song of Kanye and "US Placers" came to my mind with a sample of Thom Yorke. Lupe and Pharrell were awesome on this, too.
What do you think?
@Tarff033 Is that a new song?
You should start doing "Classic Reviews" were you review older albums you haven't reviewed before.
I hated the beat on this one to be honest. But I love the leaked song "Check My Bitch". I think this year will be good for rap. J. Cole's album, Jay Electronica's album, Detox is finally coming (which will more than likely be a production masterpiece), and I think there will be certain songs on Watch The Throne that will really hit well too.
you just called it bro
0:31 That sounded eerily similar to The Nutshack...
Anthony, if I can go so far, I think I enjoyed the podcast version of TND just as much as the videos! Idk why, but I for whatever reason really enjoyed the review in that medium. Keep it up brotha!
What the world really needs right now is a new Madvillain album.
Woot?! LEX Killed that beats!
@KingWi11 Yes it is. It's an audio review at theneedledrop [dot] com. You gotta listen to it. Let me know if you can't find it.
i will say that the beat is one of Luger's better ones, and while i do dig the snare combos i can agree that by Jay-Z's verse you start to see the cracks in it. also agreed on the vocal section. i do like it, but it really builds this song up to something it really isn't. overall a C+ for me
NO MOAR MAINSTREEM!
Please, i'd rather watch a scarce amount of GOOD Hip Hop reviews then the recent slew of bad hip hop.
But i still love you..
@jpoodle Sorry, brah...
I was hoping for songs like The Joy & So Applaud from them. I hope Kanye West does some MBDTF type production on this album.
A good example of a tag team effort from jay and kanye would be "Haters" on B3. At first when I heard that song I hated it, but it has grown on me, and the in and out style of their vocals is what I hope for in "WTT".
@kinglookgood your opinion on the song is the criteria. All professional reviewers don't represent everyone but they can give a pretty good idea of the quality of music; for example, Rolling Stone said St. Anger was bad but I liked it, but Rolling Stone and all music critics said Sgt. Pepper's was awesome and it was.
I definitely agree to a point with with what Anthony and everybody on this comments section is saying, but this is a street single, intended for "the streets". Now, "the streets" refers to the people who really enjoyed Teflon Don and Flockaveli, and those people make up a large and influential section of the hip-hop community. Even rappers who are less esoteric and considered part of a larger music community (i.e. Yeezy and Jay) still need the support of those people.
This beat is dope and the opera stuff is cool.
@WeirdRicky Your'e goin' C.A.M. right here.
@theneedledrop no keep reviewing mainstream rap. it's entertaining. and review older stuff too, idk if you did Madvillainy yet but if not.. do a review of that!
I don't understand why you don't like Lex Luger's drum producing. I feel like he utilizes 1/64 & 1/32 snare and cymbals tastefully. He is able to adorn his beats while emphasizing the important beats. I think this is really good work on Luger's behalf, I feel like he puts a lot of work making his beats complicated in really subtle ways.
this is actually not the 1st track off of "Watch the Throne", there is a track called "That's My B*tch" f. Elly Jackson of La Roux & Bon Iver, way better than this track, but I don't think this track is bad nor did I agree with your review of MBDTF, but check it out.
Holy Ghost - Do It Again - track review please :D
Heard it live in London in December and it really stole the show.
I agree. it likes the song is trying to be more important than it really is. and I was pretty surprised that we werent overrun with remixes like the way we were when D.O.A came out. and Luger is overrated.
Maybe off topic, but are you going to review Common's new album when it releases?
lmfaoo you're reaction when you took the headphones off was perfect. haha you pretty much summed up the track in that one split second moment. I'm kinda hoping this song is just a parody of the game, and they suddenly just change it up on everyone.
@theneedledrop you should review some older stuff! maybe a second channel because almost everything new sucks nowadays
@ultramusic247 he's already reviewed the Fashawn album, search for it on his page :)
Any plans to review the new Ducktails album?
Review Braids
also, bought Pink Flag today. Thank you Mr.Fantano.
@Str8Champion I mean Anthony should review albums that he likes and in the best case inform us about gems that we haven't even heard about, maybe like a good dj. Just read what Anthony replied to me. He recognizes the problem..
And LASERS too. That album is going to be great. I've never heard anything by Lupe I didn't like.
Dude, you are amazing. I cant describe it, you just know your shit. SUBBED!
Is this song even done yet? it sounds unfinished in the version I heard.
@theneedledrop Would Kid Cudi's new album "Man on the moon II" fit too well in that category? I'd really enjoy a review on that.
please review the wavves/best coast release of summer is forever. i'm very curious of your opinion on it.
@jesseclifton LOL seriously
nevermind how every one of his albums in the 2000s is regarded as some of the better albums of that year, and how his 2010 album near perfect to perfect reviews from generally every critic who rated it.
Both verses sound as though they've been written "on the fly" and the drop of the choral vocals really make an impact upon first listen. However the song did offer me rapidly diminishing returns. I think the percussion is shocking, the drum rolls are just awful. HAAGH?
Anthony, have you reviewed cape dory by Tennis already? Please do!
If you want to listen to what a real colab should sound like check out the song:
We On by Lupe Fiasco and Gemini.
This beat strait up sounds like it belongs on the wacky flakey flame album.
Cant forget The Pharsyde when your talking tag team too!
How about reviewing Jim Noir's EP Zooper Dooper?
I completely agree! I'm so dissapointed in this track:( really hope the album is better
Review the new Panda Bear + Ducktails song! It's super amazing, up on p4k.
Hey, breathing is wheezywaiter's thing ! D:
awesome review though
I think you mean 808 bass drums not snare drums.
There comes a point in every rap listener's life when (s)he he has to realize the purpose of songs like these. H.A.M. is a "club banger.". Simply put, it's a song with average to mediocre lyrics and a good beat that is meant to make people dance. The problem with reviewers of rap is that they are always looking for the next 'rapper's delight' or 'juicy' before considering the BUSINESS or rap. The first song is about promotion; getting play distribution in clubs and on the radio and this song
anthony i love hip hop, theres soo much good hip hop out there, but you seem to review terrible ones, like lil b, come on, shad was a great listen and if you review hip hop within the realm of that, ill be satisfied, please madlib releases music every 3 weeks and i know you can find more hip hop worth it, the hip hop fans on your channel need thisss
You are a brave man Mr Fantano, keeping on messing with the Jay-Z and Kanye disciples! Props for always stating your true opinion!
whats the album in the backround, bottom left?
Mr Fantano, are you more of an album or song kinda guy?
This is coming from a somewhat biased viewpoint since I think Jay-Z and Kanye are both too busy being in love with themselves to produce good music, but I have very little faith in this album being worthwhile.
Really didn't enjoy this. I've never been a huge hip hop fan but I appreciate it when it's good and when you see two giants of hip-hop collaborating like this you either expect it to be ground-breaking/very interesting or, more likely, self indulgent "it's good because it's them" kinda music. The chorus is weak, the rhymes are weaker and there is noting particularly listenable about this. No more H.A.M. for me
please please please review The King is Dead already!
smith westerns next or what?
can you review the new ducktails with panda bear. killin' the vibe.
You should review Suuns album, Zeroes QC
Yo I heard the next single is called L.A.M.B.:
Lame Ass Midi Beat
I hope they step it up on the rest of the tracks
@PdubzCrew Oh I know all of that. I just said it was funny that he uses fruity loops because the reviewer said "it sounds like it came straight out of fruity loops". I didn't criticize fruity loops at all. I actually like the program. I just criticized Lex Luger as a producer. Even in trap music I don't think he's very good.
PLEASE review 'The Roller' by Beady Eye :P)
i didn't really care for it. kanye's rapping on here sounded similar to lil' wayne. the beats i found were kind of amateurish and put together with it going nowhere.
What was that? Hip hop opera?
That's My Bitch is better. I agree with your review, 100%. Just want to let you know, It's kinda hard to take a hip hop review seriously with "Hippa to the Hoppa" witten in the background. Then again the song is hard to take seriously. haha
Review the new Ducktails album puh-lease!!!
Anthony, you should teach man, I think you would be a dope music professor
I'm digging the Madvillain in the background. Thumbs up for DOOM and Madlib.
Blog tv soon?
The main problem with this song is Kanye. I felt he could have been better lyrically seems like RhymeFest didn't ghost write this song for him. The other problem is the beat, while not bad it just wasn't made for Kanye or Jigga. It sounds like Trap music e.g Waka Flocka, Rick Ross and other southern artists. Instead of reinventing the wheel Jay and Yeezy are just jumping on trends. Still holding out hope for an epic album though.
I think the two of them were just trying to have a bit of fun with this track...
i don't expect much.
I thought the song was decent; the hook was indeed catchy but good god was that beat awful. Still looking forward to the album, though.
A true reviewer judges a song solely from a MUSICAL standpoint.
Why should he consider giving the song points because of the "business" of rap if the actual music is crap?
it is all about personal taste and enjoyability, not economics.
I agree with you on this one. Didn't care much for HAM
did this dude just ask what kanye is cocky about? what the fuck shouldnt he be cocky about in terms of his work.
The funny thing is that Lex Luger uses Fruity Loops. And I agree he isn't a very good producer.
Why? Because he has an opinion?
@ronaldthetyfan
obviously don't listen to alot of lil b.
I think both Kanye and Jay-Z (more Kanye) are too egotistical to work with other people that well on a collaboration album like this. I think they will both try to outperform each other and while hopefully that would push them to make better verses, the entire collaboration aspect would feel disjointed.
Review ducktails III please
Review the Chariot - Long LIve and don't block me for spam
I loved every track off of MBDTF, but this is really, really bad. While Kanye is always mainstream, this song is just plain boring. Nothing about this song save the sampled vocals holds my interest. I hope for better on the whole album.
You should do more with the mainstream persuasion. Open your heart for the unoriginal man!
Review Flying Lotus's new EP Cosmogramma Alt Takes!!! Thanks!
the game of chess is like a sword fight: u must think first before u move. smith westerns
Was expecting a game changer, but not sure anymore. Hopefully this won't make the album. Kanye needs to make the beats himself.
I really disliked this song. Lyrics were atrocious, Luger was atrocious. I really expected more stuff like their collaboration on The Joy. If you haven't needledrop, you should review that song. Shows you what I consider the ceiling of a collab between both Kanye and Jay Z
@DarkHumorist
You're using logic. This is equally as bad. Try something like, Cubase, Reason, Ableton, shit anything but Logic.
It helps when he says what his accomplishments are so the listener won't think it is just a bunch of aimless brags. People like Chino XL and Eminem have this down pretty well. Just say that you have survived (insert contreversial moment here), I have won (insert accolade here) and you all are jealous. See it's easy, cookie cutter, but simple.
psst anthony review ducktails
I didn't like it at all could not finish it strange because I do love their music solo some how they didn't mess together on this track I think I need another single to judge the whole album
...Why does this song remind me of the NES game Silver Surfer?
Lex Luger is only 19 Years-Old..give him time
Jay-Z's first verse is fucking crazy, even though the song in general is kinda underwhelming.
