The dynamics of this bunch was ONE guy wanting to drill all his mates slowly and surely by increasing the pace over the climb and half wheeling all of them. I saw that in the first 30 seconds so then thought it would be fun to half wheel him in the end in front of his mates haha. All friendly banter and a good work out for all. 5. you should make a video on building a budget bike from ground up. I'm really wanting to get into cycling but dont know much about it or where to start when it comes to bikes. also I'm a broke slave, was just forced to buy a new car after my truck finally gave out. trying to get out of the shit system one step out of time. need a bike though really want a new hobby
Reef Guzzler you could do that but if you're just getting into cycling, there's no need for the faff of carbon fibre and building it. There's loads of alloy road bikes on eBay/Facebook. I got a specialized allez for £300 three years ago and I still ride it fast every day. Good luck mate
Just shop the heck out of ebay, craigslist, etc. Set your budget, and start watching. You will find something u like, and probably even cheaper than building it yourself. If u really want to build it yourself, go for it, but dont because u think it will be cheaper.
You don't "build a budget bike from the ground up." Why? Because you're paying retail on parts with a 50% margin. And that's a 50% margin on wholesale. The best way to achieve the best bike on a budget is to buy on closeout at the end of the sales year, which is late summer, fall and winter. Some of the best deals can be found in early spring, but selection diminishes at this time. A bike on closeout is the best deal for several reasons. First, per above, the margin on bikes is smaller, usually around 35%. So markup on all the parts is 15% less. Second, there's the savings from the start: bike makers buy parts kits at OEM pricing, not wholesale. So the original cost is less, so with less markup on top of that, your end price is much, MUCH better. And third, on a true "closeout" sale price, your markup will be less, and the dealer may have paid below cost in the first place. 35% off MSRP for a closeout bike would cost double that to piece together paying retail. So buy the best bike you can complete, then upgrade parts in the future as necessary. PS Caveat Emptor buying used. If you don't want to buy stolen goods (thereby perpetuating the market for stolen bikes, giving bike thieves jobs), insist on buying bikes that have original receipts.
Facebook market place is definitely the place to go, loads of people selling bikes on there for cheap. Don't rush and keep looking around until you find something great within your budget. Look for a shimano 105 or ultegra groupset and probably stick to an aluminium bike to start with. Good luck!
Hey Man, everybody said it all it your comment tho i may add, enhance your knowledge on cycling (groupsets/wheels/Frames etc..) then search for these websites it's filled with gems! Always try to be smarter than big brands
You are really good at analyzing riders. You may be past your pro years but get a camera on the bike of a rider in a pro peloton and analyze the pros from inside. A little Natasha from time to time is good too : )
Only been dropped once, I wasn’t planning on doing the longer ride so I didn’t have nearly enough food. Not to mention most of the guys in the group sets cost more than my bike. I only got dropped in the last ~5k and just a few months later I can ride totally fine with them on the same bike.
Love the way you guys ride past the dropped riders and there like 🤬. Love the way you just sit at the back and let the group work whilst you observe, work out who is who and then show them who is boss. Whilst working your way up the group Do you ride big ring uphill or spin up on the smaller ring Destroy the Alpha 😜
What is better NovaTec or Chris King ? Chris King for sure has high mark up and high production costs, as they are made in the USA. Expensive doesn't mean good quality .
NovaTech is similar to just about every other sealed cassette hub out there. Radial cartridge bearings that lack adjustment capability and basic pawl engagement system for the cassette. This design requires no skill or originality in producing. Just copy and paste from any other "high-end" producer and you get this design. It works fine and is thus found in hubs from Shimano to Phil Wood. Simple and effective. The Chris King design diverges from the standard formula in two major ways. First, the use of angular contact sealed bearing cartridges afford adjustibility and long life. If cared for, these bearings will not develop excessive play seen in radial contact bearings, which require replacement after they age. Second, the ring drive engagement system is a marvel of design and engineering. It is similar to the DT/Swiss (designed by Willie Hugi) ratchet system, but with the added advantage of the spline drive, ensuring positive engagement. DT/Swiss are prone to ratchet failures under high loads. This elegant, lightweight and durable design is truly fantastic. This explains why the industry waited a LONG time for Chris King to refine the design and release the hub on the market. The result is a lightweight, durable design that will last almost forever if properly maintained. And they're things of beauty to behold.

I just had a big laugh. I’m one of those guys who wear expensive kits. I also wear really nice glasses & I ride a custom bike. I don’t & won’t apology for any of it. When I played tennis competitively I wore the best most reliable gear. I played with great rackets. Btw all of which wasn’t cheap. I say all this because I can afford it. If I’m to b judged by my gear & rejected your loss. Everyone has the best most efficient gear they can afford. I remember while riding home last summer I rode up next to a guy on a second hand Raleigh. (He told me that after complementing my bike) I said thank u & all bikes are cool as long as we enjoy riding them. We rode together for short while talking bike stuff & fitness & other topics. I’ve been in group rides with former pro’s whose bikes were very expensive. I learned a lot from riding with them. I’ve had some success racing. Always a learning process. I’ve watched the backs of fellow riders/racers get smaller as they ride away leaving me to join another group-The Dropped. {& who hasn’t been at sometime). Fortunately now it’s not as often nor by as many. Yes I do enjoy riding w/cyclists faster/stronger. Pls don’t b a sheep & misjudge someone merely bu their gear ...big mistake. If u were offered that same gear would u turn it down because of what lothers would say? Hmmm how weak is that. I’m sure I would enjoy riding w/u or your group & Id make sure u would enjoy riding with me. Stop judging focus on your strengths/weaknesses getting faster &just enjoy riding your bike. It works for me. B Safe
I usually enjoy your videos, I like the way you explain things and most of the advice you give. However, today I must tell you, what you call your "trademark move," is what we call a classic "wheel sucker" move. I understand during a race is critical and tactical to sit on the back to keep an eye on your opponents see who is having a "bad day" and of course save energy, but dude this was a group ride, not once till the end you put your nose on the wind! Why don't you tell us how much energy did you saved by sitting in the back? If you were trying to prove you are" El Jefe," why didn't you challenge the group captain right from the beginning? Or at least have them chase you? Or just ride shoulder to shoulder next to him? Mano a Mano, Again your videos and advice, for the most part, are excellent, but you may want to rethink about the way you deliver your final message. Cheers.
Yeah makes for heaps good footage me blasting past a bunch at the start and staying away solo. Where is the lesson in that? The time we did that day was about 3 minutes slower than my solo PR. You really think me riding solo filming an empty road in front is engaging? How your meant to teach bunch position if you are the only guy on the road? 🤣🤣
You might have missed the lesson. I learned a lot more from him starting at the back and moving up with his commentary about every rider. He mentioned at his position he was the worst rider in the group. Doing what he did was not ideal but for content this is better.
been a thing for me since the past 30 years while training. gloves racing. I'Ve never seen someoone with shredded palms, but I've seen my own shredded face, legs, arms and others too. Shredded palms is an urban myth! (I admit I havent't seen everything of course,,,this is all good banter!)
@@ZeeFrankensteel shredded palms is all the rage in landscaped gardens these days! For me, it's the first thing I put down on the road to save myself - my hands, did it once without mits when I first started, worn them ever since. Perhaps I should stop crashing!
Rocking back and forth uphill don't necessarily means his saddle is to high does it? Maybe he's just trying to put more power to pedals, I do that sometimes.
I ride everyday and I see so much elitist attitude from some roadies. You look at them and suddenly they're really interested in the gutter. Makes me smile.
Ive never ridden road bikes (I’m a trail rider) but what’s the hate against disc brakes? More efficient/better feedback/lasts longer/more braking power.. I don’t get it? V brakes are the house phones of 2019. Out dated.

I get the fact that you wanted to make this vid, but I’d hope you came clean with this group at the end of the ride. Any new guy to a group that would hang in the back the entire ride and then sprint to the lead in the last 1000m to pass the guy that’s been pulling the entire ride would pretty much be considered a dick. Granted, you probably could have pulled the entire group for the ride and still created that gap at the finish but they don’t know that. Still a good vid for a beginner.
1. "Come clean" 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 2. Anyone who half wheels his mates every meter up a 5.6km climb deserves to be ridden off the wheel like i did. 3. Ha I thought it was just me who looked like a heroine addict when on my bike tracky bottoms standard helmet a 3 year old bike cost me £650 pounds it’s a hybrid 😁 but don’t judge a book by its cover
If you guys look closely, he just overlapped his commentary face can from 2 years ago, and just used the same footage, but different commentary as a new video.
Of course BUT what a boring vid if I attacked at the bottom and dropped these guys like I could have and then you watch 13 mins of pretty much nothing. My pr on this climb is 12:57.

Harley, I love how you lure the front rider into a false sense that he is controlling the climb and then destroy him at the end ! LOL !
My trademark signature move I've done probably over 1000 times 😂
If the climber starts singing "Hime Hime" on a climb. Its definitely him. 😀
Alpha!!!! bamboo bike?
I stopped drinking coffee because of you!!
Best cycling video I've seen from you very interesting to watch.
The best part about it is that every third sentence of the narration is a humble brag.
You are really good at analyzing riders. You may be past your pro years but get a camera on the bike of a rider in a pro peloton and analyze the pros from inside. A little Natasha from time to time is good too : )
this was epic!!! all the show ponies and the dr just drops them! hahahaha awesome mate.
Brilliant. Didn’t notice the white shoes and socks trend till you mentioned it. LOL, cheers for another great vid.
Great banter dr
Only been dropped once, I wasn’t planning on doing the longer ride so I didn’t have nearly enough food. Not to mention most of the guys in the group sets cost more than my bike. I only got dropped in the last ~5k and just a few months later I can ride totally fine with them on the same bike.
Love the competive nature, This is what its all about for me even when I carnt stay up the front, the banter about it all is class. 👌
I’m not a glove guy…but I never wear socks in summer or a jersey…just my Specialized one piece overalls
Gloves are for snot
The bar end mirror is pretty epic
Love the way you guys ride past the dropped riders and there like 🤬.
Love the way you just sit at the back and let the group work whilst you observe, work out who is who and then show them who is boss. Whilst working your way up the group
Do you ride big ring uphill or spin up on the smaller ring
Destroy the Alpha 😜
My favorite video so far!
Funny video, but can somebody explain what exactly the problem is with jerseys zipped up? Isn't that how it's supposed to be worn?...
the race starts and I'm already like: ohh off to a great start😉👌
Ah bro ya speakin my mind. I see all that attitude and ride on. My mantra is miles nothin more. and I wear gloves always
Not sure this strategy works, since the strongest guy on the climb was you and you were not in the front.
The strongest ones stay in the back while vibin
Being an old racers has bin my trade mark .and stomping on on a old 78 schwinn with tow straps and stem shifting .it's almost to easy to push some out of there confidence.friggin sad you got 30 years of tech over my machine and yet they pop . Safe travels to all riders out there .
B Safe
@durianrider No socks on a bamboo bike. Legend When I win gold in Tokyo I’m going to thank Durianrider for getting me into cycling.
Durian rider
Good video. It is marred somewhat by your continued one-sided feud with Gaimon, but fortunately, the malignance seems to be subsiding.
I'll admit I learned a lot from this video
Nice video we need more videos of how to climb better and how to use the powermeter
no mittens? That's now a thing? Sheesh, shredded palms waiting to happen. I wear my business socks deliberately.
been a thing for me since the past 30 years while training. gloves racing.
Is this a re-upload because I swear I've watched this footage already.
Yep it is.. classic DR troll. Still funny commentary though 😆
Was looking for someone else to have spotted this. Ha
Soon as you started trashing hipsters I hit the thumbs up
2:40 - There are MANY trends in cycling however, I don't think disc brakes is one of them. They are here to stay.
Ive never ridden road bikes (I’m a trail rider) but what’s the hate against disc brakes? More efficient/better feedback/lasts longer/more braking power.. I don’t get it? V brakes are the house phones of 2019. Out dated.
I'd like to see you lead the pack and drop them along the way. Get a camera facing behind to see the faces of suffering :D
I've done that vid before.
@@durianriders link?
Absolutely killed it!!
You are right about the gloves, makes no sense, the hands are often the first thing to hit the floor in a crash.
But its cool for the gram bruh. Gotta follow wanky trends to get approval from other people who follow same.
@@durianriders I wear full finger gloves all summer long I'm a Massage Therapist so if I go down I have to protect my hands and fingers! Otherwise its no work for me which means no buying Chinese frames or wheelsets and acces. Really like the video should help a lot of beginning racers!
Meh I don't wear gloves unless it's cold, they just add weight, overheat, and feel bulky.
Hedley Kerr I had a pair of mavic cosmic gloves... I fell... and went to the hospital, they removed a bit of flesh or skin from the inside of my mouth cheeks to add to the part missing in the hand, and stitched it up with 7 stitches... I always use gloves
8min in the bloke in all blue....please lower your saddle. It looks painful and is painful to watch
The female in the beginning as well...
It’s funny because I don’t know the first thing about fitment and even I picked him out
Great video, learned a lot from this, really enjoyed the commentary.
Brilliant content 👍 love it !!
I never wore gloves..in 35 five years of racing. 30 as an elite amateur
I’m in NC so I can relate
The strongest rider is the one who has the nicest bike :). Never fails.
What advice would you give the guys in that group to practice on their solo rides to increase their watts? Thank you very much
What kind of watts do you want to gain? Top-end, sprint watts? Punchy, 15% incline, 200 metres climb watts? Heavy-breathing, 5%, 2 km climb watts? Sweaty tunnel, short TT watts? Or Alpe d'Huez, 1-hr alpine col watts?
Is it true you really love disc brakes?
I, and many others, ride because they like the social company when riding. Basically we ride and some arrive later, always none ride solo. There is always a side kick.
Hey Durianrider, do you also do live comments great races? I just subscribed and hope you do.
Right stuff. Good job commentating on your vid. Natasha is gorgeous, you’re the man. And if you’re the man, then I’m the man, and he’s the man as well.
Brilliant, that means I am an "Instagram twat" just a fatter version! I do like these videos you do, hope there is more to come!
why so many dislikes? maybe all the white sock riders? I enjoyed this brother! greetings from canada
I got smoked by 70 year old man wearing new balance sneakers, regular white t shirt , gym shorts , I'm in my late 20s and he lapped me twice, some people are just beast
very few crit racers bother with $10K bikes. At least they don't after they destroy a frame in the inevitable crashes. Several strong crit guys I know actually have gone to Aluminum! (I'd prefer Ti)
ah good to see a bunch of traditional skinny frames with rim brakes, I'm so bored with the new generation of electronic aero bricks with disc brakes
Fascinated that you would say that Phil Gaimon is doping when he is an outspoken advocate for clean cycling.
lol.
1. Just like other dopers he puts out 7watts per kg times up climbs and then other parts of the year is packfill. Every doper does this.
2. Has Tommy D as a good friend. Tommy D is the most convicted doper in the USA WT rider. Cookie man says Tommy D is clean though...#omerta
3. Ive got nothing against people who use PED's. I do have something against those who stand on fake moral ground and claim to be 'clean', sport a SOAP BAR tattoo and make it a career of beating other dopers on Strava by flying around the world to try and beat their doped times up climbs...
1. "Come clean" 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
2. Anyone who half wheels his mates every meter up a 5.6km climb deserves to be ridden off the wheel like i did.
3. I told him we can continue to Mt Lofty but he declined so I kept going solo wondering why guys half my age on more exy bikes and fancy kit couldn't keep up with me. 🙈
I have white shoes and socks and often cycle without gloves. Feel like such a knob now. I hang my head in shame.
Doesnt make you a knob but most people who dress like that are pretentious knobs.
not sure it is right here in australia most talk and chat during the ride until it gets serious
really enjoy these kinds of videos!
Ha I thought it was just me who looked like a heroine addict when on my bike tracky bottoms standard helmet a 3 year old bike cost me £650 pounds it’s a hybrid 😁 but don’t judge a book by its cover
Always like your style fella...
That blue rider with the seat too high is gonna blow up his knees. How do I know? I've done that too 😅
If you guys look closely, he just overlapped his commentary face can from 2 years ago, and just used the same footage, but different commentary as a new video.
Nah it is from this year. Wanted to give some new insights. Call the police if you think a crime has been committed. #crimestoppers
Bamboo Bike, they must of hated that, brilliant!
You should do more videos like this one.
Dr sprints to gold at the finish great video!!
Hey man, you can`t stay all the climb at wheels and than sprint the fist guy that was pulling all the time... 🤣🙈🤷🏻♂️
Tell that to anyone who wins a stage in the TDF...
Great video! You're like a cycling sociologist.
this is funny as hell man and i LOVE the kittens!
Yup that is how its done
I’m curious, if it is understood that you guys are racing, would it be ok to attack near the top and try to drop people?
Of course BUT what a boring vid if I attacked at the bottom and dropped these guys like I could have and then you watch 13 mins of pretty much nothing. My pr on this climb is 12:57.
