i think the reason that a lot of water/dark types are so... *like that*... is just because the more girlypop aspects of those types together haven't been explored yet. with the pokemon we have like mega gyarados and sharpedo and crawdaunt, they're giving more reaper leviathan, they're giving cthulu, they're giving davey jones. if we want a dark watery girlypop, we need angry sea goddess, we need siren, we need pirate queen. we just haven't been given that yet. hisuian samurott is maybe the closest we've gotten, which is saying something. i don't think water and dark are incompatible, it just hasn't had a chance to show what it can do.

I love Bombidier too, I think it's the chaotic energy and how they just want to mess with people. I nicknamed mine Morticia because she gave me that kind of morbid vibe.
Bombirdier grew to be one of my FAVORITE pokemon of Gen 9, for me she is SO Italian Mom coded, if that makes any sense, and her morbid comedy honestly makes her SUCH a serve to me. I really adore her.
Bombirdier is also one of those 'I think I will cause problems on purpose' Pokemon. it exists in the space of Dark types that exist to just be the Absolute Worst, and that's the sort of team you build around it. it pairs well with Grimmsnarl and Sableye.
That's a pretty great description of seeing the dark and flying combination it has. It definitely provides what this bird is intending to do, even storks as birds are secretly really dark on research. Especially for taking care of their young. Probably that's why they have rocks and boulders as its artillery.
I fully believe dark type Pokémon are girlypop in an elegant, sleek, somewhat edgy kind of way, criminally overlooked at times, I find them fun to play with while designing teams with the more high-fem Pokémon 🖤
Now that you have pointed it out, the crossover between Water and Dark types is so fascinating. Here's my 2 cents on the matter: The Water typing is generally a girlypop type because the main associations we have with water are girlypop: life, healing, emotions, ... Water reminds us of soap bubbles, rainy days, the summer beach, seashells, ... what have you. We forget its more mysterious, sinister, volatile qualities represented in floods, tsunamis, the primordial fear of the deep ocean, ... But when the Dark type gets thrown in the mix, all of these resurface veering the design and concept in a realm so opposite of Girlypopology causing a visceral reaction as you showed. I love Crobat, Muk, Alolan Muk, Nidoqueen, Toxtricity, Mareanie/Toxapex, Oddish/Gloom/Vileplume, Venonat/Venomoth, Victreebel, Bulbasaur/Ivysaur/Venusaur, Qwilfish, Gulpin/Swalot, Roselia/Roserade, Croagunk/Toxicroak, Trubbish/Garbodor, Venipede/Whirlipede/Scolipede, Seviper, Salandit/Salazzle, Haunter/Gengar, Koffing/Weezing, Glimmet/Glimmora, and of course CLODSIRE. what a high ratio of bangers! there's only a few I even dislike: Galarian Slowking, Toxel, Munkidori, and Pecharunt. and that means they didn't have any true misses until Gen 8!
What I love about these videos is tbh the nuance. So many people make videos about “good” or “bad” Pokémon designs but tbh it’s old, it’s tired, bc there’s hardly ever an actual criteria or clear pov (or maybe it’s just the same ole regurgitated pov idk). You’ve really opened some doors here by eschewing boring subjective conversations about quality and get into something truly fascinating and complicated by describing and categorizing Pokémon according to this one specific aesthetic (and in the shifting context of type!!) and I feel like I’ve been able to better understand and have more fun thinking about the designs and characters of these dumb lil made up creatures that take up way to much space in my brain 💖🖤💖🖤
The dark type was made for us alternative girls, ever since I was a kid it was my favorite. It’s for us who saw gwen from total drama and said “I’m gonna be her” amazing tier list as always

Two things about Sableye: 1) Regular Sableye deserves to be a mother 100% because she's giving a subtle rhinestone moment and that's such a serve 2) I didn't notice it until this video but you can actually see the side of Mega Sableye's that's obscured by the ruby in the reflection of the gem and that's so unique and fun. Sableye deserves her flowers and I'm so glad someone is giving her her moment
I'm super biased because of that one comic where Giovanni sees Alolan Persian for the first time and is utterly dumbfounded, then like 2 panels later is doing his usual villain petting a cat thing with Alolan Persian. genuinely made me tear up, everyone makes fun of her design but he accepts her 😭

Thank you so much for the Alolan Persian bit because youre so right so right. If you look at the bulbapedia pages for Pokémon like jigglypuff, Pikachu, charizard, all the really popular girlies, you'll be assaulted with a college dissertation's worth of fun facts and information but when you wanna learn about the more unconventional or unpopular Pokémon... crickets. There's this really weird disparity in the Pokeverse, if I'm allowed to put on my philosophy hat it reads as a sort of classist discrimination that really makes no sense in a series that has so many iconic characters and critters. A big point of Pokémon is that out of all 1000+ creatures every single one is someone's favourite and I hate that some of them get swept under the rug because people don't "get' their designs or don't take the time to learn about their origins so they can appreciate them more. Pokemon designs dont exist in a vaccuum like Palword designs or even the Digimon designs (even though those bitches slay) they all have a story behind them. Anyways thanks for coming to my Ted Talk
i feel like mabosstiff is okay more than looks around .. like i cant see it as a girlypop ace but in an all-dog girlypop team i can see mabosstiff as like the senior dog !! it has a grandpa serve in the way drampa and aerodactyl do if that makes sense, definitely not girlypop but a very versatile accessory because you cant leave grandpa behind . it reminds me of the 🥺 emoji also i was screaming and cheering when it was absol time .. i didnt skip ahead to it bc i love watching these in full and listening to your takes but i was so YESSSSSSSS and squealing when you brought up absols serve and legacy and what she represents because YOURE LITERALLY SO RIGHT!!! absol gives me the vibes of that one emo girlie with the perfectly styled and cool-dyed hair and she has all the expensive vip concert shirts for all of the bands you like because she was there in the front row. but like shes really nice and sweet and buys you monster ultra at the gas station and makes matching kandi for you and her. i hope that makes sense i just love absol with my whole heart and soul shes one of my top three pokemon

finally got around to watching this one. all i gotta say is you ate DOWN. this list is immaculate, amazing, inspiring. ESPECIALLY happy to see Houndoom and Mightyena's placement!!
I feel like with the thesis statement and the specific dark type flavor of girlypop, the poison type would both share and differ in what it gives to the girlypop sphere, in a way that most of the poison/dark rep so far does not seem to capture (aside from Alolan Muk who is putting in the work. The dark type has of course that edginess we all know and love it for, and I would say the poison type is like dark type’s sister in. However, where dark type girlypops seem to lean more towards that effortless elegance , poison type in my eyes leans more into an effortless aesthetic that is less polished, but still looks good. Poison type doesn’t care what she looks like or what you think, but she’s gonna give it to you anyways. She has more unfinished edges, but she makes them look good regardless. And of course there are moments where the poison type can be elegant (Salazzle being one such example), there still is that air of throwing an outfit together and still turning a look that I truly didn’t realize until seeing the girlypop flavor the dark type had to offer.
I love how nuanced your analyses keep getting. The fact dual-types get individual reviews per type gives this a very context-sensitive tinge. It's not just girlypop/nolypop, but how the entrant works with the aesthetic and feel each typing brings to girlypop. So much to dig into and it gives me life.
Easily one of my favorite series that has ever come across my RUclips feed. Love the vibes. Love the thought processes. Love the enthusiasm for this discussion! Chi-Yu is another great example of a fishy type of Pokemon that slays but isn't a water type!!!!

Thank you so much for the Alolan Persian bit because youre so right so right. If you look at the bulbapedia pages for Pokémon like jigglypuff, Pikachu, charizard, all the really popular girlies, you'll be assaulted with a college dissertation's worth of fun facts and information but when you wanna learn about the more unconventional or unpopular Pokémon... crickets. There's this really weird disparity in the Pokeverse, if I'm allowed to put on my philosophy hat it reads as a sort of classist discrimination that really makes no sense in a series that has so many iconic characters and critters. A big point of Pokémon is that out of all 1000+ creatures every single one is someone's favourite and I hate that some of them get swept under the rug because people don't "get' their designs or don't take the time to learn about their origins so they can appreciate them more. Pokemon designs dont exist in a vaccuum like Palword designs or even the Digimon designs (even though those bitches slay) they all have a story behind them.

I feel like with the thesis statement and the specific dark type flavor of girlypop, the poison type would both share and differ in what it gives to the girlypop sphere, in a way that most of the poison/dark rep so far does not seem to capture (aside from Alolan Muk who is putting in the work.
The dark type has of course that edginess we all know and love it for, and I would say the poison type is like dark type’s sister in. However, where dark type girlypops seem to lean more towards that effortless elegance , poison type in my eyes leans more into an effortless aesthetic that is less polished, but still looks good.
Poison type doesn’t care what she looks like or what you think, but she’s gonna give it to you anyways. She has more unfinished edges, but she makes them look good regardless. And of course there are moments where the poison type can be elegant (Salazzle being one such example), there still is that air of throwing an outfit together and still turning a look that I truly didn’t realize until seeing the girlypop flavor the dark type had to offer.

I love how nuanced your analyses keep getting. The fact dual-types get individual reviews per type gives this a very context-sensitive tinge. It's not just girlypop/nolypop, but how the entrant works with the aesthetic and feel each typing brings to girlypop. So much to dig into and it gives me life.
