@@HeatherJWilburn no he didn't. As is mentioned in part 1 and 2, the Salt Lake outpost was most of the remaining fireflies. They dispatched after Joel killed their two leaders and most soldiers. @@pulpficti the fireflies are a big group and it was confirmed that that group was the only fireflies left so Joel basically killed 72 people Abby was Born in the apocalypse and was 16 when dad was killed and 20 when she killed Joel she would have had 3 years at most of training also she survived a horde the size of the Boston marathon there’s just so much plot armor that you just don’t feel like your character is just someone trying to survive and instead a super killer

Hard work, that's it
59:56 this scene right there fix everything on this game for me. I love this game and I miss Joel already :(
Everyone saying that Joel was treated poorly in tlou2 is really missing out on the story of the game. Joel had a really well fleshed out and completed story arc in the first game with Ellie as a supporting character, and I personally think there wasn't a lot to be added to his story and character without being forced/diluted. His death as a catalyst for Ellie's journey is not an abandonment of the character; his presence is felt deeply throughout the entire game, and reflects/parallels so much of Ellie's story arc. The end to his life was not necessarily an end to his story; his character continues to evolve and change over the course of the game, and the scenes of him continuously recontextualize who he was and his relationship to Ellie at the time of his death, perfectly in time with the evolution of Ellie's character. In all, while I really love Joel so much, I think there is just the right amount of him without detracting from this new chapter of Ellie's life that we follow. His role is incredibly important and I disagree completely with the idea that he was fridged.
You’ve explained it perfectly. Thank you.
Ok but why did they treat him like a complete idiot and have him just fully trust a whole bunch of random strangers he meets right next to where they live
Joel blindly trusted a couple of strangers in TLOU 1 too (Henry and Sam), and he did it TWICE, the second time being after the brothers left them to die, so that was very much in-character for him.
Everything you said for Joel goes to this entire damn game. It had a nice ending, and didn’t need to be dragged out into a sequel in all honesty unless they were to pull a GTA and have a whole new set of characters.
There was nothing that couldn’t be added to the damned story in general that wouldn’t have been forced and diluted. The entire game of TLOU 2 was forced and diluted.
You want a real example of how to kill off a beloved protagonist in character and correctly? Look at the red dead series.
John and Arthur both stayed 100% true to their character no matter what, and even in the face of death. Joel in TLOU2 was an overly trustful pussy, nothing like what he was in the first game which was a hardened and paranoid survivor.
Imagine if they got the wrong Joel.
I can’t believe she leaves that guitar that Joel gave her at the end! The whole game just felt wrong to me! Joel the character deserved better, have him die of old age or protecting Ellie in a 3rd game, Not die the way he did!
Even with the "coincidence" that Joel came into the camp, he would've politely said no and left. Or got some backup.
She can’t use it anymore because she lost her fingers
@@Batt-man she could’ve flipped the guitar upside down and learn as a lefty. Would’ve been nice symbolism there too

So many people here are discussing how much they hated the game because you couldn't play as Joel or that you had to play as Abby. I'm not saying that it was an easy game to play or an easy change to accept. The change was undeniably hard. But that was the point right? That hard change can come at the worst times and that you can't do anything to stop it or undo it. That you'll experience regret, guilt, pain, and grief from those unwanted changes and it sucks, but it also stresses that you can choose how to deal with it. There's no denying that the game made an impact on everyone who played it (positive or negative). However, I think that it was a story worth telling in just the way that it was told because it encouraged people to see things from other perspectives especially when they hated doing it.
YES THANK U! I think it added more to the story of Joel dying because u see Ellie’s journey to LITERALLY give him justice and its so powerful and I like how we see Abby’s side and that she has also lost so much. No one is a good person in the apocalypse Joel isn’t, Ellie isn’t, Abby isn’t (I hope that makes sense). But I actually loved the game it was unbelievably amazing and so sad and badass. It also felt really cool to play as a badass women who are so powerful. Plus the game doesn’t forgot about Joel at all because Ellie’s journey is all for Joel, and that shows she loved him.

I don't think any father would make a different choice, no matter what it cost the world.
Hmm brutally murdering like 30 plus people to save their daughter and potentially killing the human race. Not sure how many fathers out there would do the same. Still love Joel tho x
Same for father’s children of getting revenge
I think Tommy should have died so Joel can feel the same kinda pain as Abby did when Joel rampaged in salt lake city which then kicks off. Revenge story for Joel which gets him killed about half way through the game causing Ellie to want to finish what Joel started
Or never even start a game with a deuteragonist becoming important and make the revenge plot about Tommy. Ellie was never a good choice for a protagonist. Even as a deuteragonist, I didn't really like her.
Just look at Telltale TWD. Clementine was beloved and transitioned awesomely and Lee's death has purpose and was so well executed. TLOU2 was so dry, also the fact that Ellie wasn't beloved by everyone who played the first game, it's what destroyed it's reputation.
@@bggsz4 Ellie's character wasn't beloved? What the fuck have you been smoking the last few years. The pair's iconic in video game history
@@Cavers Yes, keyword "pair". I've seen many people say they found Ellie annoying. And things didn't exactly get better when she was revealed as LGBT with Left Behind. It was one of the first things that sparked a lot of controversy for Naughty Dog.

I hate how Ellie seems hell bent on dying for her life to have meaning, and completely missed that her life has meaning to Joel. She then goes on to treat him like shit, I just don't like that side of her.
@nathaann I agree with most of what you are saying, but I can't agree on the justified bit. Her treatment of a man who has shown time and time again the lengths he's willing to go to keep her alive. Protected her and gave her some form of childhood while, shielding her from some information that he and most would deem too much for a fourteen year old kid to handle. To be treated the way she treats him is pretty shitty from her.

The only bit I found a little absurd was Ellie and Dina raising Jesse's kid in a cozy little farmhouse together. That part was so cheesy and ridiculous to me. I don’t understand why people are so mad about Joel not being the main focus of this game. The whole first game was about Joel and how he grows to care about Ellie. The second one is about how Ellie and others react to Joel’s choices from the first game. This is not Joel’s game, it’s Ellie’s and Abby’s. If you miss playing as Joel go back to the first game.

Good god, people's lack of media literacy in the comments is mind numbing. I like both games, I like all the characters, but I will never understand the backlash to the direction they took with the second game.
Joel's death in the game is good story writing, he is facing the consequences of his actions, which is thematically tied to the game's narrative. Similar to RDR2, the point is that you don't get to live a peaceful life after causing so much chaos. He literally dooms humanity without a cure to live a small town life with his surrogate daughter.
Ellie becomes are parallel to who Joel used to be, who also becomes a parallel to Abby, and essentially becomes destined to be like both of them. Similar to what Ellie says in the first game, she ends up alone, but this time it was her fault.
Sorry you couldn't play the second game as the rugged cowboy daddy. It's a video game, its time to chill out.
After playing this game, it makes sense why Abby killed Joel.
Goes to show that while some people see you as a good person, some people will see you as a bad person based on actions and behavior.
While the Joel we knew in the first game was a person who went thru loss and was given a second chance to being a father, the Joel in the second game was seen as a bad person and a selfish person for his personal gain without knowing the consequences.
Talk about a dark turn.
But still I think they should have stopped at Last of Us 1 and never put Part II out.
