According to the news reports at the time, the lorry was driving along the road when the water level was not at all deep. Unfortunately, a car was coming the other way in the middle of the road, and the lorry driver moved just a little too far over and ended up on the soft verge. The unit became stuck in the mud, and the trailer became unstable. The water levels then rose to what they are now, and the truck had to be abandoned.
That old chestnut! There's a video from Trucker Tim & G & CA Lombardo Recovery featuring that particular stretch of road and the recovery of an Asda van from 11 days ago. In the first part of the video the water depth was around half a wheel deep on a van, that's deeper than 30cm. With a fully submerged audi A6 with only the headlights visible, in much deeper water at the side of the road. Yes its tidal road with water either side. So obviously the water will get deeper during high tide. The lorry driver should be fined the maximum and have endorsements on His/Her licence for careless driving. Because the van recovery was long before the lorry got stuck.. Watch the video: Trucker Tim Recovering a stranded vehicle from deep flood! And tell me it wasn't that deep at the time
I live 5 minutes from welney wash where this happened i normally go through here daily for work but the barriers have been up for weeks n weeks now saying road closed , it's the highest its been since 1941 supposidly ... that lorry went through there knowing how deep it was and it cost his company a fairly new mercedes unit and the charge to them for potentially damaged goods in trailer not to mention the insurance being void due to driver going into a road closed area knowing the risk
Yep, gives the drivers a handy marker to aim between when it’s as much as 8 ft deep so they know they can still go for it (maximum entry speed of course, that’ll help carry you through once the engines blown).
Welney Wash and the A1101 this road runs across a natural flood plain and depending on the weather can be flooded for up to three months a year. There are rod closure signs at each end but you get the obvious knumpties who ignore the warnings
It’s not a natural flood plain. The land between the old Bedford river foot and new Bedford “one hundred foot” drain, which run parallel to each other starting from Earith heading up towards Kings Lynn and the wash, is designed to be flooded, it is part of a 6,000 acre flood reservoir designed by Vermuyden in the 17th Century.
And before any cleverdick, fashion following climate change looney starts bellowing about rising sea levels, carbon dioxides and global warming etc etc please note - this is what the Welney Washes are supposed to do. It is a regular occurrence and has been long before all the climate change nonsense was invented. Anyone who ignores the warning signs at each end of this particular stretch of causeway deserves everything they get. Good - Wonderful in fact to see an ancient Foden with it's dirty, polluting, people poisoning diesel engine doing what is is very good at. Anyone seen any "electric" recovery vehicles yet?
This is the fens, they flood them every year, that water could be there for weeks, some years they do ice Skating on the fens as it's always winter months they flood them, in the summer those lands are covered with animals.
I understood that he was forced off the roadway by another oncoming vehicle but can’t confirm it. The lorry has a snorkel as standard but once off the carriageway he had little chance traction wise.
it got to be a container driver that's keeps driving through water. 😂 I swear they get there licence free from a cornflake box. Have you noticed how bad they are.
The road needs “snow poles” at regular intervals to define the load bearing surface. The road needs barriers to physically close the road rather than signs which drivers cannot ignore.
Years ago it used to have barriers and road closed signs. The barriers would be closed and locals would cut the padlocks off to get through as normal. From memory, the truck driver must have passed 3 warning signs.
The driver saw enough warnings with 3 foot deep water. If I was his boss he would have 2 choices, sacked now or get the truck out and repair it to have half a chance of keeping your job. Oh, and compensate whoever was expecting that load because insurance won’t cover it.
@@stevenmoran4060 Did this occur in the dark ? Are the warning signs large enough to be seen at night, and are those signs obscured by trees ? On the face of it , it does seem reckless , but who expects 3 foot of water on a public road ?
no matter which type barriers you place, ppl will find a way to go past them because they all suffer from the same problem: 'oh, we know how to drive, can't be that bad...' and there's nothing in the world you can do against that mentality... snow poles shouldn't be necessary since all that needs to happen is for ppl to obey the closed signs and not go through... those signs won't be placed willy-nilly... they're there for a reason... ppl are the problem here, not the road, nor the signage...

It's spooky driving across when the water is running across the road quickly as you need to know the road in order to judge where the edge of the tarmac is. I've been across in a 4X4 when the water was around a foot deep.
Hope the driver gets given the recovery bill, there are road closed signs on that road at this time of year as it regularly floods so the driver obviously made a conscience decision to ignore those signs so should also get done by the police for not obeying the signs
That would depend. The intake.may be above the water line but the exhaust outlet is not. If the exhaust valve.height is below rhe waterline then atnleast some.cylinders.will be filled. Dont stop would be a lesson learned, that or dont start..fingers ctossed its not fucked.
It looks like the HGV driver tried backing up but got the trailer's left wheels off the edge of the road. I've seen that before & it waa over 2 months before recovery was possible!

Snow poles to mark the sides and it would have been passable for a lorry if the flow is moderate which it isn’t always. They need an amphibious ferry service for all the poor souls that have to use the enormous detour at this time of the year. Must be a big carbon footprint for all those extra diversion miles.
