Oh for sure, I came out of my 2018 Sierra 2500 that I had for work (left that job) and got this. It is every bit as powerful as that truck was for normal opperations.
I currently have a 2016 2500hd with the 6.0. Indont tow as heavy anymore. Rough ride, 11 mpg unloaded=$600 a month in fuel, and only 380 torque has me thinking about going back to a 1/2 ton since they’re so capable now. I tow 6k lbs monday-Friday so I think any 1/2 ton truck would work for that. How do you feel about towing with the 2.7 vs your 6.0?
I got the 2.7 liter and love it. For what I do not much towing but do go in the mountains it’s preformed very well for a 2.7. But I didn’t notice the trailer at all and fuel it’s what figured for a gas engine pulling a trailer. So far I’m very impress with it. I think everyone avoids it cause they are use to a full size truck been a v8 or 6. But for the price and preforming it’s down very well
Idling? Winter fuel? 60% hwy? 20.11 is GREAT! Same scenario with 18 Tundra, DC, I'd avg 14. It also gets 17.5 on the highway. Summer time I avg 15.6. you'll prolly get 22 or 23.
Just got a 22. Came with 6 inch rough country lift kit on 35s. It's only 2wd. *Sad face* but dash says avg mpg of 18. Not bad pushing that much tire. Much better than the 12 mpg my tundra got. Going to see how well it pulls my boat wich is around 4k lbs.
If I had to buy one again, I'd buy the 2.7 for sure. Quite happy, averaging 19.8mpg over the past 88k miles with towing, hauling, and everything else included.
Not bad mileage. My 8000 lb Dually 2005 Ram Cummins diesel 4 door 4x4 8foot bed truck gets about 17mpg on the highway trips. Around town 14 to 15. That highway driving I was driving from Lititz Pennsylvania to Newport News VA. rather fast. I get my best mileage keeping the tach under 2000 rpm. Over that and the turbo spools up which kills mileage. On the Cummins forum, there are people who hyper mileage these diesel trucks and say they can get in the low 20's
I wanna like the 2.7L when I test drove it I love the way it pulled. But I can't get over the exhaust. Plus it comes with the 8speed transmission which is a no go for me. I'll probably end up spending a whole lot of money on a 2020 RST with the 6.2L and 10spd but it's like finding a unicorn in the woods.
I’m getting a 2.7 crew cab tomorrow. Inventory was low, I would have preferred the 5.3. Im trading an 18’ double cab Sierra with the 5.3 for it. Best I’ve gone in the 5.3 was 28.8mpg on a long highway ride. Usually I’m in the 24-26mpg highway. That cylinder shut off works very well, and I’ve modified my driving to get it to cruise in 4cyl mode. Im hoping I didn’t just make a mistake trading my 5.3, but that double cab was too tight with 2 car seats in it
Maybe you did. It's a turbo working a 4 cylinder hard to push a heavy truck! I don't understand how people can think this is ok. Maybe it can tow well(not sure, I have to research this) but even so it's a freaking 4 cylinder pushing a large truck and trying to tow!!! I bet around the 60,000 mark you'll have stress related oil leaks.
@@wkw4095 so after owning it now for a few months, i can report it’s harder for the 2.7l to return the fuel efficiency my 2018 5.3l did. I have to baby it and work to drive it efficiently to get 22-23mpg highway. The 5.3 would get 24 without even trying. I just did a long stretch CT-MD and it was mostly 24mpg and I was working to keep it efficient. My 5.3l has made the trip several times and would get over 26 easily.
@@rustyrutledge9094 I also say bs. our 5.3 ONLY ONCE on a Seattle to Cottage Grove trip got 22. All the other trips, 19 maybe 20. I also call bs, 26 on a 5.3. Not my experience. Beave
Just so everyone knows the 2.7 l is like an entire second faster 0 to 60 than the V8 or the V6 it tows slightly less other than that it's a more powerful motor it's 310 horses which is only like 40 horses more than the V6 that's a whole Harley-Davidson Sportster worth of horsepower
I am having the same issues with my 19 Sierra with the 4.3 V6. Terrible fuel economy because of the big hood and bulkiness of the truck. It's creating too much wind resistance as that big hood and big bulk is trying to punch a hole through the air thus causing the motors to work harder. Here's an explanation: gmauthority.com/blog/2018/09/2019-silverado-fuel-economy-why-the-numbers-barely-moved/ Poor judgement by GM in letting this happen when its closest competitors, Ford and Dodge, are getting better fuel economy from similar engines. The big hood and low seating also inhibits visibility. In the base model I have, there isn't even a manual adjust for height. Even a base Cruze has it. I even sat in a Sierra that had a power seat and it didn't make much of a difference as the seat starts off too low and the power version does not life it high enough to get a good view. I've owned GM trucks for 30 years...this one has been the most disappointing....5 recalls, the radio had to be replaced, and the doors needed to be resealed due to water leaks. Now, I'm getting a hard 1-2 shift in the tranny, a tremendous amount of rattling in the cab when the truck travels over bumpy terrain, and a lot of wind noise. Wish I could trade it in but I'd lose too much money. Has your truck been better?
@@joeraptor1 my truck isn't that bad. Of course, I went through all recalls, but didn't have your other issues. Mine is Silverado LTZ. I checked Ford and Ram as well. Their MPG is very close to mine. I'm just talking about my 5.3L V8. Unfortunately, I don't know anything about 4.3 V6.
I just purchased a 2022 Silverado Trail Boss with the 2.7L Turbo. I am getting 22 Hwy and 14 stop and go. I'm averaging about 19mpg at the pump. The power for this huge heavy beast is amazing!! I would buy this truck all over again with no hesitation. BTW, love your little sleepy-eyed dog sitting next to you.
I guess i need to take my 2021 in to dealer for check up. I can't even get 16 in town with this same engine. The first few tanks i hyper-miled around town and cannot get the estimated EPA ratings. Other than that great engine. Great towing and performance.
Im not sold on the 2.7L. With 4 cylinders, a turbo charger, and all the stuff GM has done to the engine to coax power out of it. I cant see the fuel savings offsetting the cost of ownership when considering the cost of parts and labor after the warranty is up. If you can afford to get into a new truck every 3 years, then it's probably cost-effective. After 5 years, even with regular maintenance, like most vehicles, stuff is going to break and Turbos aren't cheap. I will stick with my 5.3l with AFM. Replacing a lifter will still be cheaper than the cost of replacing a turbocharger.
From what I could tell all around it looks like a very clean truck! The question I do have which I think you started to address at the very end of the video is overall how does it handle being a bigger truck that normally would have a V-8 engine in it. As far as off-road or towing how has it performed? Thanks and great video
Really considering this as I never tow and ONLY drive at 55mph no city. Sometimes highway. Currently averaging 18.5mpg life over 40 000 in a Z71 LT2 rally 2 5.3 2018 Chevrolet Silverado (damn that was long). I'd have to keep the duramax 10 years to make it worth it. By that time I'll have a electric truck lol.

@@thunderbolt5354 you do realize the 2.7T hae a much more usable torque curve then the 5.3L V8? The 2.7T 348lb-ft of torque from 1500-4000RPM, the 5.3L torque doesn't peak until 4000rpm(383lb-ft), requiring downshift to keep the rpm up to do any real work. I'd take the 2.7T and its diesel like torque every time. Thats even before considering the 75 miles average farther per tank the 2.7T can drive then the 5.3L.
@@hogrod Bullshit Dude the 5.3 has a way Higher towing and Hauling rating ! The 2.7 TurboTURD Doesn't come close to the towing and hauling ability of the 5.3 and 6.2 ecotec V8 powered GM Trucks ! 5.3= 11600 pound tow rating 2.7TurboTurd 7000 pound tow rating !
might want to look at your info, GM raised the tow rating 2000lbs for 2021 with no changes to the truck. GM engineers said further testing showed it more than capable of the new 9600lb rating. Unless your talking with the max tow package the 5.3l and 6.2l both tow about the same as the 2.7L now. Also don't forget, lighter engine gives the 2.7T a highest payload of all 1500 trucks. Drive one before you comment, you would realize your prized V8 isn't that much of an improvement in towing capability. Power curve doesn't lie.
I just bought a GMC Sierra 2024 2.7 l but I don't know if I did it right because I think the 5.3 will last more mileage. Maybe I don't know. If you still have yours, tell me if it's worth keeping it or changing it for a 5.3.
Are you still happy with your purchase? I usually put 30,000 miles a year on a vehicle. Fuel efficiency is key obviously, but anything that sips the fuel doesn’t hold its value. Still loving it?
Worrying about MPG when driving a pickup truck is comical. It's such a small part of the equation in terms of total cost of ownership. The cost per mile is closer to .50-.60 cents a mile vs the .12 cents you quoted in the video. Flat out depreciation, wear and tear on the powertrain/drivetrain, consumable parts like water pumps, belts, batteries, tires, various fluids, and finally fuel. It's expensive to operate these machines and most folks just have no idea until they're sitting at the dealership or a independent mechanic complaining about how expensive -insert repair here- is.
No way are you depreciating at 50-60 cents per mile. That would mean this truck is worth $0 in only 58k miles of driving. Haha its got 65k on it now and Carvana will pay 32k for it.
Big question for me is what the long-term reliability will be. Will this motor hold up well over time, or will it go bad after only 60,000 miles? It it runs well, gets good performance and fuel mileage, and is durable, then it will be a great addition to the GM lineup.
Haha at all the grandpa’s that can’t be bothered to research the engine. Passes all the same durability tests that the v8’s pass. Long stroke inline with big jugs built around an amazing turbo from the ground up to be a truck engine and built to handle pressures like a diesel. Guys be better please, this is essentially a modern cummins in gasoline form, brilliant gm, this will become another legacy engine from gm. It’ll be crated, it’ll be swapped, get used to hearing L3B, gosh people are so resistant to change and so eager to run their mouths before understanding the topic the wish to discuss. If only I could get that motor in a ram lol...I’m so not a chev guy.
I just got a 2021 gmc sierra 2.7 lt and I feel that the gas consumption is high most likely when it turns on let's say will have 320 gas range after a minute not even moving the truck it will show in the dash 317 miles left or 315... is that normal
Same as my accord bro. Not bad at all. My accord is a 2.0t and my average now is 21 I do sit in my car a lot and I idle it a lot but I do about 70% highway. And my car says that it get 36 mpg highway and 22 city.
I still absolutely love this truck, I'm over 40K on the truck and have been averaging just north of 20 MPG. That includes all the towing and wide range of driving conditions that I do. Sometime soon I'll do a update on the truck, but I'm incredibly pleased with it
Good day, I'll be getting one also, I would like to know the longevity of the turbo itself though as no one would be looking to have to service or replace a turbo at 60,000 mile or so. Also have subscribed. Thx
Its generally the turbos goes after the injectors 150Kish range If driven real easy , have seen before that and at 100K or less when pushed all the time ~its common
I currently own a 2011 Gen 1 Hennessey Raptor, and looking to add a new truck. I've been looking at the Ram EcoDiesel but this GM 2.7 has caught my eye. Diesel is pretty much the same price in my area versus regular unleaded but I always run premium in my Raptor so this is a big consideration.
@@tjh7797 My comment was comparing the Ram EcoDiesel to this 2.7 L running premium as that's what I run in my Raptor. I know a few people with this 2.7 L that are not getting much better fuel economy than the 5.3 L so I'm going to stick with the EcoDiesel.

Idling? Winter fuel? 60% hwy? 20.11 is GREAT! Same scenario with 18 Tundra, DC, I'd avg 14. It also gets 17.5 on the highway. Summer time I avg 15.6. you'll prolly get 22 or 23.
Yeah it is easily into the 21s right now with mostly around the town driving now that everything is shut down
Just got a 22.
Honest question, why put a lift kit and bigger tires on a 2wd?
@@sonnysystems1337 I didn't it already had it on there
Great review and cool little engine! I would get it in a heart beat.
If I had to buy one again, I'd buy the 2.7 for sure. Quite happy, averaging 19.8mpg over the past 88k miles with towing, hauling, and everything else included.
Good review straight to the point
I like my 5.3, but, fuel milage for me is around 15 in the city. 19 hwy. 100-ish extra miles to the tank is nice.
Even that’s impressive compared to what trucks used to get. My 07 f150 was rated at like 14 combined new
Not bad mileage.
I agree the 8 speed is the reason I'm waiting. GM offers this engine in the caddilac ct4-v backed by the 10 speed already so I know its doable
Agreed it’s a sin to ride a full size lifted truck with a lawnmower engine
@@alvidrez7956 nah
I thought the 4 cyl Would have to rev like crazy to do its job but it’s not the case the turbo and the low range torque are awesome
Yeah its pretty effortless.
Im hoping I didn’t just make a mistake trading my 5.3, but that double cab was too tight with 2 car seats in it
Congrats on your new truck.
BS
@@rustyrutledge9094 I also say bs. our 5.3 ONLY ONCE on a Seattle to Cottage Grove trip got 22. All the other trips, 19 maybe 20. I also call bs, 26 on a 5.3. Not my experience. Beave
Great simple video. Thank you
I would get the 2.7 all day... You wont have to worry about the 5.3 lifter dropping issue....
It's been a great engine for my needs so far.
Thank you so much for this review man
My pleasure!
I would buy the 4.3 V6.
Or the 5.3 V8. The fuel economy gap isn't that much different to me to be worth having the 2.7 I4.
Lol. Why would you ever want the 4.3 over this motor?
4.3 is the worst motor they have hence why they are scraping the V6 . I could see some one wanting the 5.3 over the 2.7 but definitely not the 4.3
Just so everyone knows the 2.7 l is like an entire second faster 0 to 60 than the V8 or the V6 it tows slightly less other than that it's a more powerful motor it's 310 horses which is only like 40 horses more than the V6 that's a whole Harley-Davidson Sportster worth of horsepower
I just got the Chevy with the 2.7 engine I think I have around 1200. I'm not sure what I'm averaging per gallon but it does pretty good.
Thank you My 4.3 will get 22 mpg in Minesota
Nice
Thanks for the practical and informative review.
Thanks!
I have 2019 5.3 with 8 speed. Its MPG is worse than my previous 2014 5.3 with 6 speed. With this I get 18 combined.
What was the 2014's mpg?
@@JrsGasolineAlley I had 26.9 as the best in 400 miles. I can say it was easily 10% better than this one. 2019 is huge and it likes moving wall 😳
I am having the same issues with my 19 Sierra with the 4.3 V6. Terrible fuel economy because of the big hood and bulkiness of the truck. It's creating too much wind resistance as that big hood and big bulk is trying to punch a hole through the air thus causing the motors to work harder. Here's an explanation:
gmauthority.com/blog/2018/09/2019-silverado-fuel-economy-why-the-numbers-barely-moved/
Poor judgement by GM in letting this happen when its closest competitors, Ford and Dodge, are getting better fuel economy from similar engines.
Getting 20mpg on my 2019 5.3l
I just purchased a 2022 Silverado Trail Boss with the 2.7L Turbo. I am getting 22 Hwy and 14 stop and go. I'm averaging about 19mpg at the pump. The power for this huge heavy beast is amazing!! I would buy this truck all over again with no hesitation. BTW, love your little sleepy-eyed dog sitting next to you.
That is awesome!
How much your tank takes to fill it up is it g71
I have V6 Chevy Silverado Z71 Trail Boss waste a lot of gas
I guess i need to take my 2021 in to dealer for check up. I can't even get 16 in town with this same engine. The first few tanks i hyper-miled around town and cannot get the estimated EPA ratings. Other than that great engine. Great towing and performance.
Love the dog! Chillin 😎
She is a good dog
5.3 is the same fuel range but more power
How will it be with 100k on it, will it go another 200k?? I am looking at one.
Who knows, time will tell. I am almost crossing 10k so far so good.
From what I could tell all around it looks like a very clean truck! The question I do have which I think you started to address at the very end of the video is overall how does it handle being a bigger truck that normally would have a V-8 engine in it. As far as off-road or towing how has it performed? Thanks and great video
Can we take a second to appreciate the fuel prices.
TRUMP!!!!
Just crossed 2k and I still really like the truck. Worth it for what you are describing

I love it. Nearly 80k on the clock, still very happy with my choice.
Thanks bro, I appreciate your comment, I will take it into account.
Are you still happy with your purchase? I usually put 30,000 miles a year on a vehicle. Fuel efficiency is key obviously, but anything that sips the fuel doesn’t hold its value. Still loving it?
Love it. Almost crossing 6k miles now and it has been one of the best automotive purchases I have made. 20.9avg as of now.
Jr's Gasoline Alley thank you very much for the quick response. I’m still debating it, but this gives me some confidence in buying one.
Would you recommend this truck?
Absolutely. 37k miles in now and still love it
I have a 2017 5.3 that has 260,000 miles on it and I average 20.2 miles to the gallon it should be better.
Thinking this exact truck but with the crew cab. Any issues so far? How many miles you have so far.
14k on the truck so far. Only one trip to the dealer for an oil change.
Oh and it’s 160 lbs lighter than the 5.3.
