The Downfall of LEGO City Police

- Many fans of LEGO look down upon the LEGO City Police subtheme. They see it as a boring subtheme that lacks originality. But it wasn't always that way back in the day. So, what happened to LEGO City Police, and how can the subtheme recover? This is The Downfall of LEGO City Police.

(Edit: This is basically nostalgia for true Chase McCain Fans)
2017 was the best one
@@SMCwasTaken 2013 was better IMO
@@AydenTheCarrot 2013 was the best subtheme
Chase Mcaine was the best police officer ever I wish there was a whole subtheme for LCUC rather than just 2 sets that have Chase in them it’d be really cool cuz a lot of cool stuff happens in that game that would make great sets for example the chase after Chase robs the bank undercover in a snow plower with a rocket engine or the robot dinosaur in the museum or the boss fight against Rex Fury or the raid of Vinny Papalardo’s ice cream shop or the hospital getting raided by the criminals wearing black suits or a massive rocket set that could be compatible with the Rex fury boss fight set just several suggestions because of how good the game is
2011, 2013, and 2017 are the best years fs
They could bring back Space Police
Good point! While I would rather have them bring back space police as it's own theme, anything space police is better than no space police.
I do hope so!
Was about to suggest the Same 😂
Or add swat teams, that would be sick but probably be too close to soldiers and such.
The last time they tried space police it was more like
"American police in spaaaaaace"
This is what happens when you defund the Lego police...
Right now they have the unofficial subtheme of Police Training/Police academy stuff out. I feel like last year’s police wave was a combo of weird undercover crooks and the use of the new vibrant/highlighter yellow parts.
Yeah, the academy set looks good however I haven’t picked it up yet
It’s meant to be high vis. Like that stuff construction workers wear.
@@Hot_SpicyGrill makes perfect sense
i absolutely adore 2005 - 2012 lego city sets, especially the police theme with 7744 being my absolute favorite. i might be blinded by nostalgia but imo those were simply the best years for the lego city series. most of the vehicle and building designs just fit so well with each other. i'll never forget the 4 studs wide cars and 6 studs wide trucks, these are just iconic for me and i genuinely think they had the best proportions compared to the size of a minifig.
4436 7286 7285 7236 7245 7235 I LOVE THESE SETS SO MUCH BROO THE DESIGN ARE SO GOOD
100% agree! When I was growing up I wanted LEGO to come out with Desert Police (I actually made my own "sets" just in case they did). I personally think LEGO City started going downhill when they removed the classic "HEY" from the back of the boxes, which was 2019-2020. Another great breakdown!
Oh yeah, I miss the hey
Whether it's in real life or in Lego, it's like no one is satisfied with the police these days.
You forgot the Elite Police sets from 2013 to tie in with the video game: Lego City Undercover.
You're right- that's my bad. Those were some fantastic sets. The Museum break in, Chase McCain's police car... I loved that lineup!
There was also a set in 2017 to tie in with the Lego City Undercover remaster
@@jakek6090 I find it rather odd that the game ran worse on the Switch than on the Wii U, despite being more advance hardware, supposedly.
@@Cyberbrickmaster1986 Me too. I've had times when the switch version would crash while saving.
@@OurToyWorldthe LEGO Elite Police (and Chase McCain) could have been the LEGO City version of a SWAT team.
I think having a highway patrol sub theme will be interesting. Like have the cars with pullbacks motors so you can have them chase crooks.
I'm glad they had created the forest police. The heavy duty (chinook) helicopter is one of my all time favorite lego sets.
Glad we can agree on that! Such a fantastic wave of sets. I should really stop procrastinating my purchase of some of those sets. Specifically the heavy duty helicopter. Imagine that in all black...sheesh
For me personally, I really loved the Police Dog Van set (4441). I don't know why, but I'm in love with the overall design and utility the set's namesake had.
@@spartan_odinson7570 such a fun set - thanks for sharing
Something I really liked about forest police was that it was released along side forest fire and the mining sub theme, so you had a sort of whole of city forest theme for that season.
@@friendlyneighbourhoodplatypus Exactly! I may have to make a video on LEGO City Fire one of these days too. Thanks for sharing your thoughts
Honestly surprised they've never done a full european wave before with the different uniforms and checkered cars
All american despite the country of origin
That would be pretty cool. Perhaps they could do an international police subtheme. I'd love to see it, that's for sure.
Great video essay as always! I gotta agree, 2012 of Lego city's peak. Not only the police but also the great vehicles line. Also, I feel like the decline of the police subtheme also had to do with 2020 with lego pulling those sets off shelves. But I'm glad it's making a comeback. The sets are super lackluster and expensive though
I'm not big into collecting the Lego city sets, but I agree that it would be nice to get some more variety in the sub-theme
Thanks for the support, Amberlia. Since LEGO City changed up their style in 2019/2020 I haven't supported the theme. Who knows though, some variety might change my stance on the current state of LEGO City.
Regardless what you think of the Lego city police line as a whole, I think we can all agree that the Elite Police line from 2014 was pretty Damm awesome!
Yeah
Yeah. 2013 actually but nonetheless was good when it lasted. It was the 2015 swamp police and 2019 sky police when it begun to get shit.
I honestly like sky police, I thought it was pretty unique with the unique torso prints and new visor
Exactly
Forest police was so good
It was! Wish we could receive a reboot?
What about 2013 museum police sets ?
I love those sets! The Chase McCain wave was awesome.
My 6 yo son is only interested in thief-chasing type of police.
When I showed him the dog training center or any other set not revolving around thiefs, he wasn't interested.
This is the thing where lego f’ed up. They always have a formula with every theme. Put two sides against each other and make sets and it worked great for almost every theme (except chima and nexo knights). But suddenly they’ve stopped doing this for lego police which just doesn’t hit the same anymore especially for kids not having the fun play features anymore since the police sets have become so bland and empty.
The modular police station is the only one adults really need
Just needs a little modernizing. On the inside, computers etc.
@@isaaclaf1000 it's fine as it is. I like the 40's vibe.
You don’t NEED any of them
@@fabianstalder5008 Ok Doomer
What about the vehicles? What are the police going to do run faster than a car?
Lego should do SWAT Police.
I’d love to see that!
Have you forgotten the modular Police station (10278) from 2021 and Police training academy (60370) from this year. They also have mobile Police dog training (60369) set. I agree that there is a lot of repetition in City Line. But we have now got some different set the last year 😊
The modular buildings are a separate theme to Lego City
I kinda agree with this. I’m still waiting for a new prison since I missed out on the first one.
Personally, I believe the best era was prior to 2012. Throughout the mid to late 2010s, there was a lack of non-police/action sets. This is because there was a overemphasis on police with a wave every year. Before, there was a wave in 2005, 2008, and 2011 which is every three years. This is the ideal pace as there is always police sets but it opens up more waves for other subthemes while not oversaturating the police subtheme. The new system is the worst though as it is the worst of both worlds. However, more importantly, the sets are just not good as they are badly designed and overpriced. They only appeal to the 5-9 demographic while early police waves were less silly and appealed to more. The 2011 police station and 2008 mobile command centres are some of the best ever sets. The 2005 police boat was a absolute steal at $25 and the whole city theme was reasonably priced. Its not really a matter of police subthemes being gone, its a matter of lego just making bad sets nowadays. I do not understand why people like lego creator. The sets now are overly detailed, more expensive, and have too many tiles and plates to actually build anything else without looking terrible or small. Previously, you could get a good house that had a baseplate and was fully enclosed for only 2/3rds the price even adjusting for inflation. Lego overall is on the decline since they pander with tacky licenced themes while neglecting their core audience of not just AFOLs but anybody above the age of 10 that isn't some hippy millennial who is "quirky" for buying lego arts sets.
Remind me please, where exactly we ever got fully enclosed houses outside of the creator line and, especially, within the city line? 🤔
@@Kuchenwurst When I stated that, I was referring to lego creator throughout the mid-2000s to the early/mid 2010s compared to current day lego creator sets. While lego city has never had that sort of set, I was clearly using lego creator as an example of decreasing size and quality while having a mostly increased price even considering inflation. An example specific to city are the mobile command centre. The 2022 mobile command truck is far smaller and less detailed and realistic compared to the 2008 command centre. Despite this, it only costed $10 adjusted for inflation. However, it has around 100 more piece and much larger pieces on average with more bricks and panels rather than the substantial amounts of small bricks and tiles of the new one. The side build of the police outpost is singlehandedly worth about $10-15 by itself, ignoring the larger and better build of the command centre itself.
100% agree. Would love to see 2011-13 sets back in store I'd jump at those
A really cool police subtheme could be fashion police😂
Lol. Maybe we can get mall cops too 😹
I quite liked the sets prior to 2012 as I felt they were more grounded in reality.
The subthemes just didn’t have an appeal as anything more than a one-off gimmick, and didn’t really fit what I perceived to be a “city” theme.
IMO the 2017 police set wave was the best wave and the 2013 Elite police wave was the best police subtheme
That 2017 wave was a solid lineup of sets. And I love the 2013 sets, especially with Chase McCain. I know they were really pushing that LEGO City Undercover game but the sets were cool lol. Thanks for watching and sharing your thoughts!
I tried making a Lego Ideas set "Donut Patrol". A comment was made that this was making fun and disrespecting the job police officers do. I also had a swamp idea in my project that I feel was lifted and produced. Maybe Lego has a problem with police because of the seriousness that the job entails.
LEGO City Undercover had “donut cop” jokes galore, the Chief Wiggum Minifigure from The Simpsons theme also adapts the donuts from the show. I have no idea why LEGO would refuse a project on those grounds.
@@legometaworld2728 It wasn't denied because of pairing police officers with donuts. You know Lego Ideas does not give reasons for why they deny projects. This "Donut Patrol" Ideas project came out before Lego City Undercover and The Simpsons sets. My ideas set didn't get made because it didn't get enough votes to pass the review. My point is being a Police Officer is a serious job. Paring it with a silly idea like eating donuts may not seam respectful now. That is why Lego is having a problem theming police as anything but police. It's to serious of a job to be made fun of.
I would have liked to have some elite police set of 2013, for me together with the forest police are the best subthemes
Absolutely. That 2013 wave is the greatest LEGO City police lineup of all time.
@@OurToyWorld 2011 was pretty good too
With having the 2008 and 2011 police station sets displayed in my city, then the 2012 forrest police station in my city with the 2021 modular police station as my main police station in my city, I would not be disappointed if lego branched out and gave us a GCPD set that was actually under either the lego batman theme or city theme but the police station itself was more batman related and maybe gave us villans we still have yet to receive as physical minifigs. I am looking at the mad hatter who we have only gotten in the lego batman video games so far.
A savannah pilice theme would work, trying to fight poachers or polluters
Interesting idea! If done right I could see that being a fantastic subtheme.
Poachers and polluters might be too dark of subjects for LEGO or at least the City theme (even a dynamite factory was deemed too dark of a concept to make as a set) but that is an interesting idea nonetheless.
My favourite sub theme is either the 2013 one, tbh I can’t remember the name but it’s the one with the museum, or it would probably be the prison island.
I always just called it the Lego City Undercover/ SWAT Wave. It and Forest Police go perfectly with the 2011 Wave
I would like to see the Construction theme back, whatever happened to that?
I love the LEGO City Construction subtheme- I bought a ton of construction sets back in 2015. Might have to talk about that in a vid, thanks for the idea!
i always tried to figure out what police sets to choose. maybe some from 2005/2008 or 2014 for main sets. also the mountain police sets feel like a rebirth of the forest police. and sky police looks like a aviator 2014 police theme
Nowadays bandits don't even get guns anymore, they get a crowbar if they're lucky, but probably they'll just get a piece of money and a weird mask 😂
Do you want Lego city to have gun laws or something? It isn't America
bandits never had guns in any CITY theme, idk if they did in Town? Cause they didnt in Town JR, City Center and World City?
Note: I'm talking about MAIN City Police only, so no Forest, Elite, Swamp ETC.
2014 Police were really good, 2011 and 2008 comes a close second and third respectively, 2017 4th, 2005/6? was honestly limited and quite bad, but not as bad as 2020 Police, which is only a hairs inch better than 2022.
2021 & 2023 fall into this weird category, while they arent subtheme, they are still city police.
Proud to be able to get prison island for Christmas that year, not proud that it’s all in pieces in my LEGO collection😅
Rebuild it, please!
I think they should slow down the release of these sets and innovate more, to make these newer sets feel like they are different. An example is perhaps bringing back space police or some sort of arctic police force in the far future.
I think what would be best is to keep a series of "normal" police sets on shelves at all times- a station, couple different squad cars and perhaps a helicopter too. Then, go out and experiment once again.
I absolutely hate the 2020 police station, it has Duplo set vibes
I honestly did think that the whole “Swamp Police”, “Forrest Police” and “Mountain Police” themes seemed kinda weird. I know that there are Police Officers in more remote locations, but I feel like they could’ve tried something a bit original like “Lego City Park Rangers” or something like that.
I get what you’re saying, they are kinda dumb, but a good dumb to me lol
Lego Forest Police, Swamp Police, mountain Police, and anywhere that’s not in the city is basically the Sheriffs Office, I feel if they made it that way it would’ve fit more.
I know I’m the past few years they remade the moble command from many years ago. I know a few years ago I got the Lego mountain police station which was good. However I think recently they haven’t done very much however the training centre seemed cool and a couple of the sky police sets look good (mainly the one with the parachutes)
I will respectfully disagree. I actually like the way City is pushing out the police sets. I think Lego is doing this because they are trying to show kids that there is more to City life than just rescuing. Of course there are still those types of sets because, according to sources, one of the top lines of work in a city happens to be a first responder. If it were up to me, there would be a year where City focuses on other city lines of work such as the sanitation business, the construction industry, (which could actually work as kids are obsessed with working parts), the transit system and the automotive industry (which obviously sales as we've had a lot of those recently).
I know there were construction related city sets at some point but I'm not sure if Lego is still making them
When they got rid of the police suits and firat forest subtheme that was when it went downhill for me
I have a few sets from 2014 including high speed police chase, prisoner transport and mobile command unit also bike as well i have 1 forest police car set..tbh i really miss those old sets because cars looked normal and sets were nice now all went downhill..i ordered lego police set 7747(used set but with Little to no damage and tbh it's all used lego sets on that site that exists in my country) i want all those old sets back..
Imagine a Lego space police subtheme of Lego city rather the actual evolution of classic space I’d love to see a set of criminals trying to steal a rocket ship or something if makes no sense but neither did sky police and that didn’t stop Lego
This video also describes a similar story to the lego city fire. Lego city should bring back the sets from 2011-2013, possibly even 2008-2010. I really wanted the 2011 police station but missed out on it. So upsetting to see that from 2011-2020 what was once a work of art is now junk. The best idea would be these sets they sell now are for young kids like they used to be lego juniors. They then re release the 2011-2013 sets as more advanced sets upto 12 and others who enjoy those sets. The same would also apply to the lego city fire sets. I understand that lego likes to make new sets all the time but the modern lego city police sets are "at an identical state to the original sets at start" I'd say even worse at least sets were decent at start. I'd recon it'd be better if they modernised their old sets rather than releasing new designs all the time.
Honestly they could modernize and expand the 2011 sets and I would lay my money down. I just got the Police Station online recently for a fair price and it's just as cool as I imagined back then.
@LaneCorbett Agree. I really loved that set. It would look great with modern colours. Also the same minifigs, which were so iconic compared to modern ones
If you ask me, there's an oversaturation for LEGO Police in general. And LEGO is actually self-aware about it - there's a police officer in LEGO 2K Drive that comments on how the town of Big Butte has "5 officers for every citizen" - that's enough to give every citizen their own security escort. Problem is, they don't do anything about it. I know kids like to play cops and robbers, but I'm pretty sure they like to do other things too...
Honestly, I kinda feel like LEGO has become too big as a company. They've become risk averse and unwilling to experiment because there's, well, no risk in not taking risks. I know that sounds like a redundant statement, but what I mean by that is that they're going to make money whether they try to innovate or not, so there's no reason for them to put in the effort. And when they do, it's usually "throw tech against the wall to see what sticks" rather than actually changing up formulas.
I've seen that same Lego police truck over and over ever since I had conciousness
I liked the police sets from the classic Town theme. I enjoyed the green tint some of the visors and windows some of the sets had.
If they brought back 90's Space Police I'd poop myself.
What the police theme does better now than previous is have regular cars being used by criminals. Like garbage trucks, ice cream vans, construction/renovations vehicles. Still annoyed the minifigures need mask and prison uniforms under the regular clothes. Fine for some, unnecessary for all of them.
I’ve always wanted a safari police/game warden subtheme, where they try to save wildlife from poachers
I have a soft spot for police theme of 2010 era it was some of my first lego
LEGO City police was fantastic in the early 2010s!
Large LEGO City Police Float Plane remake when?
One of the very first Lego sets I got that I actually saw and wanted from the getgo *was* a Lego Police set.
Police Station 7237
The 2013, 2012, and 2015 were some good sub themes. They had some sets and pieces and side pieces that work well in a lego city layout.
The best Normal Subtheme is the 2017 one imo
I 100% agree with you! The Prison Island was my favorite subtheme along with the forest police.
I also enjoyed the 2013 elite police, since that was the first time we saw special Police forces (obviously promoting Lego City undercover, one of the best lego video games imo) and a nice non-police side build (the museum)
Another thing I also dislike about the current police sets is the use of bright light yellow...it just doesn't fit imo
As cool as this idea is the only subthemes I can think of that Lego could do anymore are a prison subtheme with higher quality printed prison guards and have things like prison towers but I don’t think would do that so they could also do swats with black colors and heavy armed swat vans and probably a helicopter that could be similar to the mountain police helicopter but in black for a more elite design because I can’t really think of many other environments where police would make sense to have full on police stations
International Police Subtheme
I think a lot of modern lego police look to juniors or cartoony with the figures
Absolutely!
2004-2011 best lego city police stations
for me its 2008-2014, best era there.
Tbh, they should make some wild west stuff. Like some robers trying to get into a train with gold. Horses. Cacti. The old style bank. A saloon. I know, i'm a genious.
2011-2013 was Peak Lego City Police. We had the perfect 2011 Police Station and Surrounding Wave, the Forrest Police in 2012, and the SWAT Vibes Chase McCain Tie in Cops in late 2012 early 2013. It's been downhill since with only Swamp Police as a glamor of It's former glory.
I think it would be cool if Lego did something like a sheriff’s department or a state police subtheme, although I know sheriff stuff might be to close to what forest police was
I'd be cool with that. And even if it were closely related to Forest Police, it's been 11 years since we received Forest Police sets. LEGO can certainly bring that police subtheme back.
nice work!!
Thanks MOTM!
you should make a tier list for lego police subthemes 👍
Ooo… I like this.
When these were first released in the 80's and the 90's police were generally better viewed. I don't think they're going to be as popular since internet videos of police brutality have become so common. They should go back to space police or forest rangers that people would have a better view of. In Europe though they probably don't have nearly as many problems with police violence as the US
I guess the Lego City Police has an unlimited budget. The LCPD is a private army at this point
the phrase AFOL cringes me as much as being called a Brony, making it sound like adults are unusual and enexpected to like LEGO and needs standing out. But also, a lot of these Police sets are for kids as you say, but they have also produced a recent City police station with combo doughnut shop. But what about other City things like a Fire station? I think this is just a bit whiny and they have to produce play sets for kids, and they've done a recent and sizeable Police build already for City. The City builder customer base must be less than 5% of all total LEGO sales, so them switching product focus for those mega rich, no-life LEGO nerds with more money and basement space than sense, I don't think is their priority
Personally I feel like the new police livery and smaller sets ruined it. Now we just get smaller station and cars. We used to get a lot more. Around 2013 (when Lego city undercover came out) was the best year ever for Lego police.
2013 was awesome, I love the Museum set.
The 2017 police sets were clean honestly, clean sporty police cars and bikes, id say the lego city police went down when they released the sky police in 2019, the sky police was acceptable but i pretty much only got 1 set from it, after the sky police everything went down and the sets started being either too childish or extremely small within size, so its quite a shame
I kinda came in expecting something acab related but I wasn’t disappointed
Imagine a lego city swat. Just hyper realistic swat teams and vehicles lol.
That would be awesome lol. I know LEGO City has made some “heavy duty police cars” in the past, if you were to switch the pieces to all black those could definitely work as a fleet of SWAT cars
the museum sets are similiar to this idea
@@Gabiman66 I use prison door parts to cover the windscreen and replace the small bar piece to with window size bar piece to modify that police van. You may try it.
last wave i bought was from 2019, lego city aint cooking anymore, and i think lego knows well that asides that it started to look like the friends theme, city series literally collapsed.
Apart from these subthemes, my favourite, and IMO most important change to the genre is the inclusion of criminals apart from the generic thief, and actual criminal builds. More than just a small motorcycle and the same escaped convict minifig. I think they stsrted this around the mid 2010s
They could try a stealth police maybe?
I would like to see state police , forest ranges , winter Alaska police or Canadian police , mountain units also police form other countries like UK , Germany , Italy , France
1:49 wdym sky police brought some good things, like the police pilot torso, the breathing apparatus thing, minifigures with printed headpieces, and a cool visor
Sky Police is such a joke that they laugh at how silly it is on the Lego City Adventures show
The best things Lego can do about lego city is to add more houses in the 2025 lego city series
I got back into lego after the Forrest, mountain , swamp stint have been grabbing here and there as I plan to use them as more a less state troopers and Forrest rangers or dnr police in my city train garden dosnt hurt any that they loom a bit like the markyand state police
What's with the subtitles for the blind?
The problem that the LEGO City theme has is exactly the police subtheme, now LEGO release police sets yearly, that wasn't the case back on their early years (2005-2010), back then City had a two to three year "calendar" used for avoiding repetitions of subthemes, for example, 2008: police and coastguard; 2009: farm and construction... LEGO City had a wide variety of subthemes that they no longer release sets of, like construction or coastguards, and this is due to the huge success that the police subtheme has gained through the last 10 years. To me, the saturation of the police sets started in 2012, where the early symptoms began showing, and by 2015 it was too late, LEGO started releasing police sets on a yearly basis.
I think it's okay to release sets and phase others out. My big issue is design change "forcing" you to buy all new. We only had a short run of the dull yellow and now we got highlighter. I bet in a year or 2 the color changes again.

I love how the Lego City police just have access to Chinooks, Sea Stallions, Humvees, and even fighter jets and yet all they use them for is high speed chases. I can't imagine the taxes the average Lego City citizen must pay in order to keep the police running.

There's only so much you can do with police theme without actually making it realistic and, by extension, rather violent and not child friendly

Fun fact: Lego City Police also had a video game called 'Lego City Undercover' released in 2013 as a Nintendo Wii U exclusive, and later released on other consoles and PC.
I loved that era of LEGO City. While I never played the game, Chase McCain was such a fun addition to LEGO City- and the sets released that year were fantastic!

It would be amazing if lego could re-release sets from 2005-2014. Not to mention fire sets but all classic sets from 2005-2014/5. It could bring back the greatness
Also, the cars, stations and stuff these days look so unrealistic. All of lego city does. 2014 was the prime time of Lego City Police imo, but also the forest police
