I can relate to this deeply. I lost my father when I was 16. One week after my birthday. Him and I were supposed to go out that day for my birthday. Unfortunately my dad was battling alcoholism since I was 8 and he could never gain control. What we didn’t know is my dad was dealing cirrhosis of the liver. One day my dad came to my mom and apologized for all his failures and vowed to fix them. He left her and took his life.
I turn 38 this year and I’ve spent more years without than I did with. I value what good memories I have. Forever missed, forever left with a hole in me.

My dad and I knocked heads most of the few years that I had with him. Alcohol was the weapon the enemy chose to destroy him. Old school Oklahoma oilfield rig tough. I followed in his footsteps. I was 27 when he left this earth and had the honor of being with and praying over him in his last moments. Love is the Conqueror; Forgiveness its Warrior. I miss him…

I am the third, everything in my soul wants my wife and I to be able to get the fourth, this song hits me in the most powerful way that all but a few songs have ever done. My dad and I have always been close, he has done everything in the world for his family at the sacrifice of his own happiness, but good lord I am certainly my father's son.

I may not be a Jr. But I carry my last name with that same pride. Miss him every day, RIP Ol' Man - D.E.M. (1959-2013). Not many new songs in the last few years have absolutely pierced through this rough skin & hit me square in the heart. Hardy made me laugh & Cry thinking of him on "Give Heaven Some Hell" & now Stephen Wilson Jr. made me cry & curse my Ol' Man with "Father's Son". Damn.
You sir, have earned another fan. Beautiful words.
