This episode marks the end of the long flashback started with episode 3. The Youswell adventure happened with Edward still around 12 yo in this continuity, then the last scene in the desert takes place when he's 15. It can be confusing because we don't return to the exact time the long flashback started. - The flashback started in episode 3, when the Elrics, probably post-Reole, found in some IIRC unspecified library a copy of their first alchemy book, which made them recall when they were younger. - So we got the long flashback from before their mother died, up to the Youswell mine adventure, when Edward started getting a name in the East area. - The flashback ending doesn't bring us back to the library of episode 3, but to right BEFORE arriving at Leore in episode 1 instead. The taxi driver gag explains why in episode 1 they were travelling the desert by walking. - The next episode will just reprise the story post-Reole. No reference to the library from episode 3 IIRC. Trivia: the Youswell adventure was in the manga, and in 2003 anime it has got some changes (Edward's age probably, Lyra for sure. She is an anime-original character). In FMAB, instead, it was completely skipped for time reasons, and up to episode 38, when a brief flashback is thrown in, the audience doesn't know the reason why Yoki (a recurrent character there) holds a grudge against the Elrics.
6:18 Well, it's just a mining town at the eastern edge of the State, it doesn't have a lot of tourist attractions I guess. The 2003 show doesn't mention that I think, but in the manga and fmab, there's a large desert area going further East.
8:54 I completely forgot about this specific continuity issue. Unlike the manga, in this version of the show Alphonse already tried becoming a State Alchemist and passed the first part of the exam, before Mustang told him to quit otherwise they might have wanted to see him without the armor, revealing his secret. It makes little sense for him to say "maybe I should become a state alchemist too" now... Talking about logic problems, it's odd how the people of the town fall for the lie of Edward and Alphonse having just met on the train, considering they tried to get a single room for two! And how does Alphonse plan to pay for it, btw?
I'm so happy to have found someone still watching this amazing anime. Great reaction!
