Serotonin, or 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT), is a neurotransmitter involved in many brain and body functions and is commonly known as the substance of well-being and happiness.
Serotonin is produced in specialized neurons found mostly in the Raphe nuclei located along the midline of the brainstem. The axons of these neurons form extensive serotonergic pathways that reach almost every part of the central nervous system, including the cerebellum and the spinal cord. This is why it’s not surprising that serotonin is implicated in a vast array of brain functions, including sleep and wake cycle, appetite, mood regulation, memory and learning, temperature control, … among others.
Serotonin is synthesized from the amino acid tryptophan and is stored in small vesicles within the nerve terminal. When a serotonergic neuron is stimulated, serotonin is released into the synaptic cleft where it binds to and activates serotonin-receptors on the postsynaptic neuron. Serotonin action is then TERMINATED via removal of its molecules from the synaptic space. This is accomplished through a special protein called serotonin-transporter.
Low levels of serotonin in the brain have been associated with depressive disorders and current treatments for depression aim to increase these levels. The most commonly prescribed medications, called “selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors”, or SSRIs, act by blocking serotonin reuptake by the transmitting neurons. This results in elevated levels of serotonin in the synaptic space and its prolonged action on the receiving neuron. The SSRIs have developed into the drugs of choice because they produce fewer side effects thanks to their selective action on serotonin alone and no other neurotransmitters. Unfortunately, because serotonin is involved in a wide range of brain functions, the side effects remain significant and may progress to a potentially dangerous condition known as "serotonin syndrome". This syndrome is generally caused by a combination of two or more drugs used to raise the serotonin levels in the brain. If the medications are not discontinued, the condition may become fatal.
Nonpharmacologic methods of raising brain serotonin have shown promising results in recent studies. It has been suggested that positive mood induction, either self-induced or due to psychotherapy, correlates with INCREASED serotonin synthesis in the brain. The interaction between serotonin synthesis and mood may therefore be 2-way, with serotonin influencing mood and mood influencing serotonin.
Other methods include exposure to bright light and tryptophan-rich diets. To note, however, that serotonin-rich food such as bananas would NOT work because serotonin, unlike tryptophan, can NOT cross the blood brain barrier.
Finally, although it sounds like a cliché, physical exercise maybe the most effective and safest way of improving mood. Several studies suggest that serotonin levels are increased with vigorous physical activity and that these elevated levels are maintained for several days after the exercise.
Exercise is essential to keep depression away. Backed by Neuroscience. But if you can't exercise because of depression you need drugs to get moving.

Desensitized serotonin receptors are the problem, not necessarily low levels. Your serotonin levels don't matter if you're desensitized from it. No Fap and abstinence from things that trigger lots of pleasure (like drugs) are the main things that help. Gut/brain inflammation is a problem too.
this is very interesting and helpful thanks
@zeeshan khan fapping once a day is anti cancerous 👏 it's been proven in many studies using statistics to show correlation.

Digestive health is key to seratonin production and dopamine production.More than 90% of seratonin and over 50% of dopamine is produced by the gut. Eat high fiber foods to feed the good gut bacteria. If you have anny issues with with depression, anxiety and brainfog i would suggest taking a look at Candida Crusher’s channel on youtube.
Yes, bacteria can synthesize neurotransmitters in the guts. They will not cross the blood brain barrier though which means it will have not have an effect on your mood.
Thank you

Excercise certainly increases good mood but you need to attach some beneficial reason for you to go for exercise, only then you will hv a urge to go for exercise. If you lack a urge to go for exercise, you can't start exercise in the first place and hence can't take the advantage of exercise....
Terjemahan bhs indonesia ada..?
Exercise seems to really improve serotonin levels when combined with Tryptophan (you can probably just take any form of protein as a proxy)
Also note that because protein can't be stored in the body, as it gets turned into fat or glucose, you have to ideally eat some form of proteins shortly every few hours, like maybe every 4h. The best way to do that is probably just to use protein powder (protein shake), although note that it shouldn't include sweetener because those destroy some of your gut bacteria, which you need if you want to actually get the energy (glucose and such) out of your food, which you absolutely need if you want to feel good

Is SSRI competitiv or allosteric?
For many years I've tried to find out a basic reason why we and almost all creatures need to sleep.
Suggestion that a key part of the need for sleep is the body's need to make serotonin, which it does in a symbiotic relationship with gut bacteria in the large intestine.
Suggestion that we sleep to first produce serotonin, then to draw it into the body through the extraction of water in the large intestine.
Though it can be synthesized, there seems to be a major difference in the health benefits from the microbiome made serotonin, and the artificially made serotonin.
Here's some notes on both how important serotonin is and how widespread it is in all living things.
Besides mammals, serotonin is found in all bilateral animals including worms and insects,[19] as well as in fungi and in plants.[20] Serotonin's presence in insect venoms and plant spines serves to cause pain, which is a side-effect of serotonin injection.[21][22] Serotonin is produced by pathogenic amoebae, and its effect in the human gut is diarrhea.[23] Its widespread presence in many seeds and fruits may serve to stimulate the digestive tract into expelling the seeds.[24]
Gut bacteria manufacture about 95 percent of the body's supply of serotonin, which influences both mood and GI activity.
Serotonin was shown to exert functions in innate as well as adaptive immunity. Serotonin stimulates monocytes (23) and lymphocytes (24) and hence influences the secretion of cytokines. Vascular smooth muscle cells respond to serotonin by synthesizing interleukin (IL)-6, a possibly atherogenic mechanism (25)
Serotonin is a neurotransmitter than has been identified across all forms of life. In recent years the presence and function of serotonin in plants (phytoserotonin) is becoming an increasingly active area of research. Serotonin has been found to function as a plant growth regulator, and a stress defense molecule.May 24, 2017
Although serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine, 5-HT) was discovered 60 years ago (1), the study of serotonin and its receptors continues to yield new biological insights of medical relevance in virtually all major organ systems, including the cardiovascular, pulmonary, gastrointestinal (GI), and genitourinary systems as well as the central nervous system (CNS) (2).
Serotonin is made from the essential amino acid tryptophan. An essential amino acid means it can’t be made by your body. It has to be obtained from the foods you eat.
you see about exercise, that is very true!! when i exercise I feel happier, even now when i comment about it, I do. Exercise everyone, have lovely day beautiful people
Prayer for My friend I been praying for her for a long time and my friend Cassandra seems to be getting worse instead of better. I asked her why she lost so much weight since I see her as she lives out of state she was telling me about meds she takes so I am trying to learn about sone thing
You're a good friend and it's good she still talks to you about what's going on in her life verse's not telling you anything.
Give her a tight hug, appreciate even little baby steps she does... praise her and let her feel that she is important to you... love her like sister do.. it will give her self confidence and improve her worth.... her self esteem.. and pray together and thank the LORD ALWAYS.
Damn I was so excited, I thought if I ate a pound of turkey, id be happier...but tryptophan doesn't cross the blood brain barrier, so I guess I'll take my cymbalta and wait till thanksgiving like everyone else.
I do try to go for walks and work out
Not necessarily exercise more of breathing, full breathing… fully conscious controlled breathing. But that wouldn’t be shared by the medical community now would it! A large part of these happy chemicals are produced in the lungs triptimines as well. Breathing is the secret. Breath is life.
Well when you have anxiety attacks you can't breath to the point you feel like your about to have a heart attack and pass out
Great synopsis for lay people.
Bake it!
When im tension and angry i feel headache, is this becauae of low serotonin?
low serotonin levels cause aggression/anxiety, there is many different causes of headaches but normally they say higher levels of serotonin would cause a headache. so I think maybe something else is causing it, hope this helped :)
what is permanent solution for depressants and not to take medicine after some period.
Physical exercise.
How to Increase Serotonin Levels give me some example of Physical exercise.
Regular (at least 30 min everyday) moderate to intensive exercise that increases your respiratory rate and heart rate: running, swimming, playing sports...
suggest me how to withdraw Quetiapine, lithium and lamotrigine.
Eat nutmeg everyday, it really work! making chai tea with grated nutmeg is delicious and effective. Also eat rosemary everyday, maybe on grilled vegetables, you decide. I promise you, you will feel immediate dramatic results!!!!! (don't go over 1 teaspoon of nutmeg and certainly Not 1 tablespoon, it's that strong!) let me know how it works out!!!!!

Serotonin (the substance of well being and happiness)
I've tried every nonpharmalogical method to treat depression and my parents would never let me take antidepressants... what do I do?
Have you tried exercise? Minimum 30 min of moderate to high intensity every single day should give you some result - try running, aerobic, cycling or swimming or anything that raises your heart rate (not stretching or muscle building). I am not fan of antidepressants either.
@@Alilamedicalmedia yeah I've given multiple kinds of excercise a try and nothing's worked
Keep doing it for a while, it may take some time with regular workout. There is no miracle, though, things only improve slowly. Exercise is good for your overall health anyway, you risk nothing doing it.
have you tried natural supplements..
things that worked for me.
1. half teaspoon turmeric with a pinch of black pepper inwarm water post exercise

My brain releases uncontrollable seratonin even during random times. And when I am sad, i get depressed like REALLY depressed. Explain?
This happens to me as well and I dont know why
Same
I ate cheese, gerkin spread, margarine on white toast. I had 4 slices After eating this I felt severely depressed for 2 days. I was nearly suicidal. I had also had a cup of black tea with powdered milk and powdered turmeric, raw sugar during the day. Obviously my depression was chemical based from interactions with this food. Foods have alot to answer for when it comes to chemical balances in the brain This should be investigated. Yes I have been diagnosed in the past with bipolar. No I am currently not medicated.
After everything was digested and passed through my body I felt fine again No depression

I take medication for serotonin and that shit WORKS Gets me fuuuucked up hahaha. I'll feel it the whole day tomorrow and I'll be knocked out asleep.
I suffer from mild depression. I try to eat as healthy as I can, but I HATE physical exercise. The fact that physical exercise is recommended in every single place makes me extremely sad because is something that I simply cannot do.
Try walking. Its mild but very effective if u make it an habit. And use the Japanese method. Start with a very achievable goal, like a 30 min walk twice a week. Once you succeed at doing it for a whole month, then you can try to increase the challenge but with small steps. Like 45 min instead of 30. Next step : 3 days instead of 2. Everytime you manage to achieve your goal no matters how small you WILL feel great. And never tell others, they WILL discourage you. Achieve personal victories. I promise you : you wont regret it.
Association is not causation. Easiest way to restore serotonin levels is making sure the gut absorbs tryptophan. Almost all depressed individuals have very poor gut health.
Has anyone tried nootropics? Like L - tryptophan?
Use risodine n olinzapine tablets. As my phycatrist told me
