  • The Republic of Turkey turned 100 on the 29 October.
    Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, known as the ‘Father of Turkey’, had envisaged a modern, secular nation-state when he founded it from the ashes of the Ottoman Empire.
    With a history of military coups disrupting its democracy, the country is now ruled by President Erdogan, a leader with ambitions to revive the Ottoman influence on the global stage.

    I had the pleasure of visiting Turkey last week while it was celebrating 100 years and also got to see the country honor Ataturk’s death on November 10th. I have to say Turkey so far is my favorite country. It’s a progressive country where women will dress in anything from a burqa to a tiny shirt with their hair dyed blue and the people you meet everywhere are amazing. I visited Istanbul, Cappadocia, Konya, Pamukkale and Izmir and everywhere I went I was amazed at the scenery, history, food and people. While Turkey does have polarization and political problems (much like my home country of the U.S.) having been through the country I have no doubt that Turkish people can endure through it. Happy 100 years Turkey!

      Women may have some freedoms but minorities live in fear. There 20 million Kurds that are oppressed. In 2016 Kurdish women and children were burned alive in the SouthEast of Turkey. There were worst atrocities than what is going on in Gaza but nobody spoke since Turkey is nominally in NATO.

    I visited Turkey only once and loved it. I have also visited other Muslim countries like Jordan Egypt Saudi Arabia so trust me when I say I have a healthy respect for Islam. But for Turkey to turn its back on secularism and become Islamist is a regressive move. Cherish your religion, but keep it out of politics.

      Unfortunately half of the Turks haven't realised the comfort and value of secularism. New generation grow up with internet and they are more open minded. But to keep islamist ambitions our government wellcomes all refugees from not civilized islamist countries to change the demography.

    • @montaser9985
      @montaser9985 7 месяцев назад

      That's an orientalist and western supremacist opinion. You'll label any political system that doesn't align with western values as "regressive". Turkish people want Islam and thus that makes it a democratic decision. I don't think you consider democracy as regressive right?

    From the bottom of my heart, I believe that if Turkey can rightfully place sensible, high-quality, ethical individuals in the positions they deserve, retain its young, competent population, ensure social justice, catch up with the trends of the era on a global scale, and adopt an open-minded socio-cultural structure, then it has the potential to be by far the best country on the planet.

      To be by far the best country is a stretch. But if we can do everything you mentioned we can become another Germany or Japan. The most powerful country will always be U.S or maybe some day China. We can't be the best but we can hang with the best. Turkey does not have enough population and manpower to be the best and most powerful country in the world. We must first aspire to be a top 10 country, then when we achieve this we must then aim to be a top 5 country. Let's say, USA, China, Japan, Germany, France, Russia, Great Britain, India and Turkey are trying to be in top five.
      We lack nuclear weapons. We need nuclear weapons to be in top 5
      We can become stronger than France, Great Britain if we also develop nuclear weapons.
      But surpassing India, Germany, Russia, Japan is just really hard.
      Surpassing China and U.S.A is out of the question.
      So the most realistic scenario for Turkey is to be a top 10 country in the world.
      To be a top 5 country is really really hard.
      But Turkey has the potential to be a top 10 country.
      Or even a G-7 country. But top 5 is not realistic on the short or medium term.
      On long term even being a top 5 country is possible but we will have to surpass the likes of Germany and Japan economic wise. Which is super hard.

    • @soik1401
      @soik1401 6 месяцев назад

      So many other growing countries. Brazil, Mexico, Indonesia, Egypt. Not to mention India, Russia. In a few decades also Iran could change a lot. There will be USA, China, India. Japan, followed by Germany, then some other big EU countries Russia and some 10 others. Turkey has many problems. Not least the Kurdish issue. To think Turkey will be G7 is to not realise the competition.

    Great mighty Turkish people are advancing towards a leadership position amongst the Muslim Umma.
    British did the majority of the harm to the Turkish Empire by harnessing the religious hatred of the Muslims from the Christian Europe!
    From AtaTurk to Erdogan there is an ascendancy back to the rightful status of leadership of the central part of the Eurasian landmass.
    Blessed with the energy of the people who are capable and willing to work smarter and better Turkey deserves full attention.

    The section on the Hagia Sophia is disingenuous.
    "It had been a mosque in Ottoman times, but Ataturk had converted it into a museum as a symbol of his secular republic."
    Maybe mentionning that it had been a Cathedral for more than a millenium first wouldve explained Ataturk's move better. When Erdogan reversed it into a mosque, he said it was in homage to Mehmed the Conqueror.
    Imagine the spanish changing the Chichen Itza into a catholic church back in the 1600s. Transforming it into a museum in the 1930s, but then reversing it into a Church in 2019 in honour of Cortez. Utter tyrant.

      Imagine, the Spanish changing the largest mosque in Europe, Mezquita de Cordoba, to a cathedral. Never(!) transforming it to a museum. Using it as a cathedral to the present. Oh wait... They are exactly doing this. And many other mosques, too. Utter tyrant - if Muslims are doing it. Conquest of Europeans doing it.

      In Athens they destroyed all historical mosques built by Ottomans. But noone asks why in Greece all mosques are destroyed?
      So Turks at least didn't destroy any single church in Istanbul... ;)
      As a secular oriented Turk I was oppose to make Hagia Sophia mosque again. It is world heritage and using it as a mosque doesn't make any sense than political show.
      But it was Turkish domestic issue, foreigners has no right to comment about a property that belongs to Turkish nation and government.

    I am very surprised by the ignorance of people in the comments. But I also understand that this is how the European media is directing you. Turkiye has only changed the form of government. In the last times it was governed by a parliamentary monarchy. At the end of the first world war, the people's parliament was established and the monarchy was ended. Even in the treaty of Sevres, which documented the end of the empire but was not implemented later (due to the war of independence), the name of the country is Turkiye, not the Ottoman Empire. Most of you think that there is such a thing as a newly invented state, similar things happened when the French Revolution happened, can we say that France was founded in 1789, NO. In Turkiye, we do not celebrate October 29 as the founding day of the country, we celebrate it as the Republic Day.
