To be honest, you can get a MIM Tele, a decent acoustic with electronics, and on of those SuperChamp X2s for a true electric tube amp as well as an acoustic amp model setting for LESS than this thing costs. Maybe not the most prestigious, but still.

More like 1.2 guitars for the price of two. Two for the price of two implies it does a good job at both electric and acoustic sounds but it's maybe .8 of an acoustic and .4 of an electric.

Its not cheap, it dares to be different. So everyone knocks it. I think the idea is not to replace a quality acoustic or electric guitar but to perform both styles without having to swap guitars on stage. It may not be cheap, but its cheaper than a Gibson LP Std and a Martin (all solid wood) acoustic combined.

The people who are gonna buy this already have a tele and probably a strat, at least 2-3 acoustics and a 335 or similar. They’ll think that it’ll inspire them in some way and look cool on a Hercules hanger in their music room.
Some will be loopers who will realise the value of something so versatile.
Maybe a few will be buying their first guitar and love the idea of having 2 in 1.

So I received mine finally last night. This was the 3rd one. I can tell you for sure the Gig bags suck something terrible, my first 2 were destroyed in shipping. Basically the front smashed in. Why they didn't do a hard shell case is beyond me. The problem seems to be the knobs on the front, they cave in the front of the guitar when they are stacked for shipping. Its an acoustic it is not meant to support weight all on one point. I am definitely not a fan of the gig bag for the price point. PRS makes an awesome gig bag for their CE models.
Ok that being said, now I can finally get to the guitar. It really is a lot of fun. It is more than just an Acoustic and an electric. You have several different acoustic voices from Parlor guitar to a dreadnought. As a gigging musician, this is a fantastic guitar. It is light weight, sounds great and works great. You can really get some great sounds out of it. I definitely wouldn't put electric strings on it. However I was really pleasantly surprised as how good it does sound. Now if it is not plugged in it is still playable, however the sound is a little off, unplugged it sounds about like those old Ovation guitars from late 80s and early 90s with the plastic back. Not the greatest of acoustics but worked. Still I had a lot of fun with it last night. A lot more than what I was expecting. I fired up a looper and then looped a rhythm and then overdubbed it with another acoustic sound, which really sounded like 2 unique acoustic guitars playing then dropped into the tele mode and soloed for a while. I also then got to experimenting and put a Electro harmonics Pitch fork on it and then I got an acoustic 12 string sound out of it, yeah the high e and b strings were also shifted but for big chords and so on it works great. I mean when your going through a pedal board. You have all those tools you can throw at this thing and get a lot of different sounds. I wouldn't be surprised is some people do record some unique stuff with it. Me I bought it personally for on stage, getting an acoustic sound out there, I don't need to mic it, I can roam around on stage. I don't need multiple amps, I used a Marshall DSL 40 CR last night primarily through its clean channel. I honestly thought it sounded better through there than through an acoustic amp. Worth the money, yeah, I will definitely use it. Needs a case or a much better gig back though, that is my only disappointment.

I also changed to electric strings, it was a much more familiar feel, but it just didn’t sound right, not bad, just not right. I switched the top E, A, and D strings back to a phosphor bronze wound string and I kept the G, B and E strings electric and I really like this combo. I think it was the wound G string that I didn’t like.

My review of the actual guitar: First let me say, I had high hopes for this. I play in a country rock band with lots of guitar changes during our set. This disrupts the flow of the show quite a bit. While I would never use something like this in a studio setting, I saw this as a potential solution for me on stage. I ordered one. When it arrived, I unpacked it and played for about 30 minutes, and decided it wasn’t for me. Why? Well, first the good part: It really does sound great plugged in. There are several good, useable acoustic sounds, and the Tele pickup is also passable. What I didn’t like was the tone/blend knob layout. In a live situation, where I’m singing lead, and trying to switch between electric and acoustic sounds, there is no way, in some combinations, to switch back and forth with ease. It would require carefully switching the 5-way to the right position, and then making sure the blend knob was in the right setting. WAY too much to think about, when the whole point was to try and simplify. This sort of switching might be great in a studio setting, where you have a lot of time to tweak and find just the right sound, as in the video above. But I have great vintage “real” acoustic guitars that I would much prefer to record with... As I said, this was supposed to be for live playing. Also, I really didn’t like the feel of the guitar. I could not escape the feeling that I was playing a Baby Taylor. It doesn’t feel like an acoustic, and it doesn’t feel like an electric... so, does it feel like an old pair of jeans? Uh, no. Look, guitars are very personal beasts. To feel comfort on stage, you’ve got to have something in your hands that feels familiar. This couldn’t have felt more foreign to me. And, it did not have the feel of a high end guitar (read price tag). This felt like something that should be under 1k. I’m sorry to say that, and I’m not one of the “looks new/different and therefore can’t be good” haters who have lined up here to poopoo on Fender’s parade. I’m just writing this in the hope of dissuading people from ordering this online and having to return it; a gamble i wittingly entered into, and lost $114 in return shipping costs. If you think you may be interested in this, GO PLAY ONE IN A STORE. Don’t buy it online.
Fender gets extra points for development and innovation. I just don’t think it quite landed. At least not for me. YMMV. Cheers.

I actually really like the look of these guitars, especially the green one, although I can't put my finger on why. Everytime I hear someone play one though, I cringe a bit. Does it not sound tiny and hollow and metallic to anyone else?

Could be the nature of the beast or the tone signature from the amplifier. I'll have to go look if someone did a straight up PA test to avoid one modeling software tampering with another (or analog wiring with the modeling software).

If you see the vídeo that the Captain and Pete made, they connected the guitar into an acoustic amp and it sounded great, but I agree with you, the sound in this video is not very good, especially for the price of the guitar

    • @interstate1049
      @interstate1049 5 лет назад +4

I have one - it has to be run through an acoustic amp as that is what the modelling software is attuned to. As a lightweight, telecaster-shaped acoustic it is phenomenal. So good I sold my Taylor as it won't get used now: unlike in this video it has a rich, articulate acoustic tone. As an electric, not so good - needs some treble boosting to rid it of woolliness, but it's so handy to be able to change guitar type on the fly when looping.

Paul Clifton thanks Paul. We needed another voice of reason speaking from experience.
Playing in pubs each week and doing my best to jam leads on the acoustic, looping with body percussion and dealing with feedback etc... I am hopeful this will be the solution to all these problems but pragmatic that the compromise is tone.
Great to hear you find the acoustic tones rich.

I got the jazzmaster shape and love it. If you like it you like it, ignore all the boomers that say it’s awful and you can just buy an electric and an acoustic for the same price. What 2 American made fender guitars can you buy for just over 1k….
It’s innovative it’s inspiring and it’s different, guitarist hate change and anything different so it’s no wonder they get a bad rep. Try one out in a store and see what you think, I think it’s a great blend of an acoustic and electric and sounds great 😊

At least D'Addario makes a .10 -.46 set with a wound third. Easy to play and bend, and makes acoustic sounds sound better. Or...more acoustic. Also helps balancing the overall string levels through the pickups.

Seems like a better option to keep acoustic strings on it, especially with 3.5/4 of the positions being predominantly acoustic models. Great vid though! Saves me from stringing it electric and seeing what's possible! Definitely makes you think about how much more efficient your live set would be with a guitar that could handle acoustic and electric duties in one light, light instrument! 3 lbs I think? Just need to wait until they move production to Mexico or throw a Koa top on it! The future looks fun for this line...

Better to start expensive and release a budget version down the road than visa versa and give it a “cheap” vibe from the start. It’ll never end up a classic if it started out as a budget guitar.

A lot of people are saying you need to mute the strings behind the slide but that is not true. I play slide an dit is so hard to keep you your fingers on the strings behind the slide. Especially on the upper frets. This is my opinion:
Keeping you fingers on the strings behind the slide to mute them is just a old wives tale. If you watch Duane Allman, you will, often, see his fingers behind the slide come off the strings. That happens all the time when you play on the upper frets, as you need to keep the slide going along the fret line and you can't do that if you are on the upper frets and you try to keep your fingers on the string behind the slide. You have to turn the slide a little and your fingers come up off the strings. What I believe is going on is that the slide is to heavy for the strings. That means the slide is pushing down and contacting the frets. That is why you get that sound. Or Rob is pressing too hard or a combination of both. Just my opinion. Just look at the following photo: it is Duane Allman playing slide with both fingers behind the slide lifted off the strings. www.allmanbrothersband.com/index.php?module=My_eGallery&do=showpic&pid=5324&orderby=dateD

Also don't forget, they have a contract with Fender and have probably a ton of these to unload so they are going to talk it up. That being said, doesn't sound bad thru 10,000 quid worth of amps, microphones and software. Not to mention about a grand worth of pedals.

The problem with the idea to build a good electric and a good acoustic guitar in one instrument is that at the end you might create an instrument that is mediocre as an electric and as an accoustic instrument. I don't even think that the idea is new.
The problem ist that an accoustic and an electric instrument work in an opposite way.
With the accoustic guitar we want the vibration energy of the string to change (mostly) as fast as possible to a vabriation of the top wood (good attack) and possible long (good sustain), the sound (as a change of air pressure) will be amplified from the body and come out through the hole to hear it.
With an electric instrument we want exactly the opposite.
We want to loose as few as possible from the energy of the vibration of the string in order to get a good attack and sustain through the pickup. So energy should not be lost in wood vibration energy (which would mean lower attack and lower sustain)
In my opinion both worlds can not exist in the same instrument, without to have mediocre results on both disciplines.
And then with this price i guess that this guitar will be a flop.
Personally i didnt like the accoustic sound of it.
    (Sorry for my bad english)

it is obviously not marketed for the mass-market, at that price point. but it is one of the most innovative and just different guitars over the last couple of years, which might be enough to make them successful in that market of expansive speciality guitars. I am not really into the whole pop singer songwriting folk crowd, but I can totally see these gaining a following there.
