I carried a lightning otf for 5 year before it finally broke. I abused the crap out of it too. We furnish larger commercial buildings like schools and hotels so we have to open and cut up hundreds of cardboard boxes. The knife was used buy everyone, dropped, step on, and ran over. Before it finally gave out, the serrations on the blade were almost worn away and it looked battle worn 😂. I purchased a new lighting elite because I was so impressed with how well the old one held up.
"JETTYWOLF LIVE" - 5/26/2023 MY NEWEST EDC PART 1 THE S.O.S. OTF KNIFE. 📌""part 2 coming soon" Sharpening, take apart, how I carry, etc. ......LET'S GO FISHIN' www.captdaves.com
I have the smaller version of the Lightning. Going on my 2nd year and hasn't failed once. I have a Cobra Tech I paid $75 for and it has failed me miserably.
Look at the Cobra tech lightweight. And tell me that that isn't the exact same knife as a lightning Elite same pocket clip same dimensions all they did was make a D2 blade for it and put their outside design on it. But I can tell you right now I'm not spending $88 plus shipping or whatever it is just to check it out I'll go with my lightning and my lightning elites. It's not like I'm out cutting a moose every week!!
The black coating wore off my lightning elite super fast, seems to be painted enamel. Have to keep them oiled to prevent rust but a hair too much oil and it'll fail
@Capt Dave's Sport Fishing yeah I use Wicked Wax, it's a mixture of bee's wax and KPL Knife Shield, just suggesting to show you the lightning will fail if it isn't perfectly clean
@@CaptDavesSportfishinghey man I'm gonna subscribe to your chanel but do you do lots of videos?? Do you think you could do one like where you have both a Benchmade real one and a clone of the same knife and take them both apart and put back together?? I'd love to see it it doesn't have to be benchmade but id like to see a real and the clone version both taken apart to see the difference in the insides
Originally I attempted to post a comment that was longer than this will be. for some reason it didn't show. What I wanted to say is, I actually prefer a mid grade steel like Aus8. So easy to sharpen, and For me personally I can spend a lot less time as opposed to sharpening "super steel" Am I correct if I say a drop point in one hand and a clip point in the other?
oh yeah I'd really like to have a clip point or a bowie shape. I saw a few as I perused around the internet for hours but I wasn't really all that impressed with the handle shape. boker makes an OTF with a nice clip point style blade. and of course that used to be Aus8 and now it's D2. with the Kalashnikov handle style. the price went through the roof. it seems like a year ago you could get them for a hundred bucks. but not anymore. and then I think we're right back to a cast aluminum handle.
My lighting is the older Aus8 japan model. I've had it for years. Personally I'm not a fan of Chinese D2. My lighting doesn't have the two tone blade. From what I've seen microtech doesn't run their steel very hard. They use m390 and 20cv Rockwell at like 58 which is very soft.
@@richardhenry1969 I'm not a fan either. But D2 is the main stream budget steel. Really doesn't matter, I can keep it sharp enough for my use. Never ever seen a lightning with any steel designation. LOVE MY LIGHTNING ELITE. it may not stay sharp after cutting a bunch of rope or plastic. But it has a special place in my EDC
Most knives made in Taiwan are using aus 8 aus 10 steel ...my demko freereign is aus 10 I've never heard them being budget steels ...I just bought a sos tanto otf and it broke on me the first day I had to take it apart and fix it also had to sharpen it right out of the box so definitely not worth 99$
YEP, I LIKE AUS8 I SENT MINE BACK. TO ME A LIGHTNING FROM TAIWAN OR EVEN A CHINA LIGHTNING WAS BETTER!! SEE VIDEO PART 2, ruclips.net/video/eIgiKqEIlz0/видео.htmlsi=_nTcLDTNHtqAO5aB SENT MINE BACK TOO.
@Capt Dave's Sport Fishing I know it definitely will cost more than D2, you can get $15 knives with D2 these days. If it's gonna be Chinese I prefer 14c28n, it's the only steel they can heat treat properly on a mass scale. I don't mind American made cpm-d2 as far as edge retention but still for something like an otf that's enclosed and living in Florida it'll rust even with a coating but not as fast as carbon steel
I think the SOS is an easy Lightning killer, which is a Chinese knife as well btw. Seen the cheap aluminum diecast body of the lightning break with very some light batoning, not something you might ever find yourself doing, but the milled aluminum body SOS breezed it and was then hammered through a 2x4 with no issues. Lightnings are just kids first otf trash.
SENT both SOS KNIVES BACK!!! MISFIRED too much and the TWANG sound sucked!!! For 2.5 times the cost of a Lightning Elite, it surely wasn't worth it. For me. I'm not batoning, I'm not bushcrafting. Don't care if its Die Cast. I'll never test the strength.
Hogue makes some decent otf's for half the price of Microtech but I'd rather wait for magnacut than get their 20cv even though their hrc is low but just about everyone heat treats magnacut too low for production knives
I'm over all that steel hierarchy. Don't care any longer, not skinning a moose, or chop a tree any time soon. Cutting stuff at the house, some lines, and playin with edges. I'd rather have shit that catches big fish. OR a newer boat!!!!!
@Capt Dave's Sport Fishing All in how much use you'll get out of it. It wouldn't make sense to buy 10 cheap used boats instead of one good one(unless you misuse them often lol)...same with knives. However, I have folders in every kind of steel and shape, just depends what I'm doing with them, just like they make different boats for different kinds of fishing.
@Capt Dave's Sport Fishing yeah that's a nice boat but it would get stuck in some of the places I go for bass. I don't collect anything either. Do you sharpen knives for other people? Hope you didn't buy that wicked sharp for $20 knives lol
@@SimonRiley115 I'm in the black....I've PAID for the Wicked Edge with customers. And really like unique knives people drop off or send. Thanks for sharing, never heard of SOS, (ShatOnTheShingles?😂) but looks like an Aliexpress special branded for double the price. Your Microtech took awhile to sell because it was a used collector's knife. China would still be making gas station knives if they hadn't stolen the technology from us
MY Microtech was in superior condition as is everything I own. Plus had a waaaaaaaaay better edge than factory. Thats for sure. Never heard back, so I guess the guy was happy. He also bought a LUDT, new in the box from me. So he knew I wasn't selling clones or crap.
@@SimonRiley115 no more collecting for me, used to have dozens of buck 110's of all styles. that'll drive ya straight to the poor house and fast. Now, I just like sharpening and messin around with inexpensive EDC knives. This SOS IS RADICALLY EXPENSIVE FOR ME THESE DAYS ❗❗
