7:03 is falls out of the rag when you shake it
Easiest way to disarm is to deploy the blade, then pinch it and retract. If you don't want to do anything to the tip, otherwise how you did it is just fine. I've taken a few apart under tension, and the only thing that will happen is the spring will jump off...usually when you don't expect it...
In this OTF, there's no need to disarm the blade; just deploy it and leave it out under tension. It's very well built, and none of its springs jump out. I've disassembled it about 8 times this way and never had any problems.
Hey Kev, the majority has it that Rem-Oil d4y lube spray is the best lube for OTF knives...fun video!
Thanks for the disassembly video also I absolutely love my auto livewire.
All due respect, but that tray is perfectly designed to lose small parts.
This happened to me a few weeks ago with a ultratech button spring. It went flying and took me 2hrs to find it 🤦♂️. I was like it’s a tiny spring it couldn’t have had that much force to go far. After searching the floor for 2hrs. I move a curtain on the other side of the room and in the corner of my eye caught it falling off the curtain. I wanted to use my knife so really didn’t want to have to wait for a new spring to be sent. Especially because I live outside the U.S and parts take weeks.
The squeal after it fired at the end got me 😂👊
I commend you on showing disassembly and re-assembly videos. I will say I've been guilty of yelling at the screen when you miss a step or struggle to figure it out. Lol. I'm a retired mechanic/farmer so I'm fairly adept at figuring out complex mechanisms. This video reminded me of the first time I disassembled an OTF. The slide carrage fell apart as soon as I touched it, parts flew everywhere before I got a good look at it. Good times! P.S. Less oil is better in an OTF because excess oil collects dirt and dust and will gum it up.
Just remember, the more oil you apply to the blade and internal components, the more dirt and grime accumulates on those same surfaces and makes it necessary to disassemble and clean the knife, more frequently.
Thank you for this vid. Not gonna go into details, but I got a dime lodged into the opening of my Livewire, at least it wasn’t the ultratech. Also mind your pocket change when carrying otfs.
Lol never thought of that
Using oil, even KPL ultra light will make it sluggish. Your supposed to use REM oil or something equivalent something really lite
Ultra light was made for otfs. Works great and less gunk gets in because with rem oil u get too much in. The Microtech method never worked for me. It always made the action worse for me.
These are my favorite videos that you do Kevin. You’re a braver man than I am. Happy Easter!!
Just a suggestion. Break all the screws loose before you remove any.
I kindly suggestion, for each part, especially the slide, take a few seconds to not move so the viewers can thoroughly see the part. Maybe, you can also describe what you are seeing like how the mechanism operates. Just a thought.
Thanks!
Can you change the blade on these? Let's say you order a blade like yours, can you change it to a DAGGER blade, or are the dimensions different?
Not sure would have to ask Kershaw i think
It’s so nice when a knife can be disassembled with a torx screwdriver (hello Microtech).
Id had to take a dozen pics as i tore into tht dude . Maka me nervous . Lol
15:04 ejecto switcho cuz! 😂
Got one coming in tomorrow, learning what not to do, appreciate your frustration to alleviate mine 🫶
HAH! Great movie reference! 😄
I am very much looking forward to getting mine when ever they start shipping them. Definitely will save this vid for when I clean mine.
I have a soft spot for Kershaws, very early stuff n new, thanks for the vid! happy Easter Kevin!
Thanks Kevin I appreciate that was an awesome job. I don't think I would have attempted it and as I saw you do it that was awesome
I'm curious, did the sluggish feeling go away after cleaning it? Was it a noticeable difference or just a little better?
Its very snappy now. Love it
I've found a real light oil like gun oil works the best on OTF's kpl has gummed up mine after a few days maybe kpl dryor light would be good
Yea this is ultra light
Hi I’m new to you channel, appreciate you making this video. Do you have more info on the guy that sharpened your blade for you?
Kyle Kuhnle or KlingenWerk on IG
In your opinion would polishing the plate would make the action smoother?
Not sure. Its pretty smooth already
A tip for not loosing the little nub in the switch, put a very tiny amount of lithium grease in the spring. It will help hold the nub in place while the switch is out of the body of the knife.
Please monitor your mouth breathing
Sure. Cant help when im sick. I just have bad sinuses. Sorry
I liked your vid. Damn nub. I like everything about the Livewire, except the tiny pocket clip that sucks in your jeans pocket. A bear sliding it on & off the pocket. Looking/waiting for someone to design a better clip. Going with the GT Recon 035 because of that.
Always love the disassembly videos!
How is it that you do not use a magnetic mat when you're dealing with screws that small?
Most knives i take apart use titanium hardware anyway. And the mat has a lip
Very happy to see more otfs leaving off the obnoxious glass breaker. I love my ultratech but the glass breaker is completely unnecessary
Yea and like hogue it takes $.05 to include a replacement screw
I missed that small pin with spring too, I assembled the knife without it and I cant tell difference in sliding or rattling..
What no skiffs?
Don't know how you kept calm, when my springs shoot across the room I flip😢
Just hold the blade then pull the switch to knock it off track
Or block it with my palm
I have always just shot some lighter fluid down my OTFs shake it out fire it a few times and good to go.
Just To Note: Kershaw Recommends NOT To Disassemble The LiveWire
I don’t do recommendations 🤣.
Was the screws T6 or T8? Description says WIHA T8 bits, but I think you said T6 somewhere? Looked like a T6 bit, but can't be sure.
Probably T6
It doesn't hurt to have a little lube under the spring tension assembly too, for next time. Where it rubs against the lower frame. Friction there can cause bad button feel sometimes. That's why just putting remoil in the end works because it gets everywhere. For remoil, I just spray some in, fire a few times, put the opening against a rag and shake it. See how black it is and do it again. Then wipe it off the blade and fire and wipe a few cycles and call it good. I only do a full teardown once in a while.
Yea i just cant deal with the smell of rem oil on my knife. Especially if im gonna cut food with it occasionally like i do. Whatever i did seemed to work cuz its firing great now.
U have any otfs that fail when retracting facing down? This new Hogue Counterstrike seems to have normal tension but it was failing when aiming it down and retracting. Brand new. I tore it down and did the same as to the livewire except some oil on the spring. Now it works but still seems sluggish aiming down. Maybe thats normal or do OTF springs break in some and get stronger?
@LeftyEDC I've had that before too where they fail at a certain angle then once cleaned it won't. My hunch is that one will probably fail at that same angle again once dirty. My utx85 was a nightmare. Broke 2 springs, always unreliable, misfired all the time. Went back for warranty twice for each spring and came back the same. I finally got the tool and took it apart and found that the frame was bent slightly and rubbing on the tension assembly. Once I shaved off a little material it has worked fine but I feel like MT should have caught that. I love the knife now that I fixed it myself but not impressed with their warranty department.
@LeftyEDC I doubt the springs will ever get stronger, more likely the rest of the moving parts will wear enough to smooth everything out sort of like working a folder a bunch to break it in.
@@jesseadams45 ah good point
There is no spring tension in a double-action OTF when it is stored or deployed. Or in a failure mode, for that matter. The ONLY time a double-action OTF spring is under tension is when you're sliding the switch forward to deploy it or backward to store it. So there is no need to deploy, store, or something in the middle when you disassemble them.
Good to know. Thanks
Spends 5min talking about the nub and spring. Looses nub while carelessly cleaning. "Was there a nub there? I think I remember a nub there."
🤣
l like your video, it is funny. lol....
Fantastic video! Thanks Kev!
15:05😂
👍
To everybody at home if you don't know what you're doing don't be monking around or you're going to land up with extra parts never a good thing
Pretty sure if i got it back together, anyone could. 🤣
Found a ky watered down works great
Kyle put a great edge on.. how ,any degrees per side? Nice great vid. I’ve got the same knife.
Not sure sorry
In ur tray bottom center
Dropped on your pad.
It is so bad!
Good job🫡
I am waiting for the first Otf without screws on the handle,
Scott topper field grade shrike. The final boss lol.
perfect Kyle... u brock it u noob... grumpy old noob 😜😂✌🏼
Kyle? 🤣
@@LeftyEDC Kyle Kuhnle that grumpy old f 😜🤣, because you KEV said maybe the sharpening caused the issue... so team up with me and let's blame Kyle for it together 🤣
Does the squeak never go away?
It must cuz im not sure what you mean 😂
I'm having the same issue. Did you ever find a fix?
7:07 🤣🤣🤣
Thank you for the video I'm looking forward in my livewire coming in the mail. I do have to say I had at least 3 times I yelled at the screen lol but thank you nun the less
