These effects are still very convincing 30+ years later. The sequences stay in frame for such a short period of time that it's easy to miss. I've seen this movie countless times and I'm surprised I missed it all
now go apply all those techniques you just learned to ISS and NASA space footage, bcs they're using the same tricks
@@outlawedTV88 As vfx artist, I did. And the result was it was impossible to fake even with modern technology.
I mean who would go as far as animating a single strand of hair free floating in the background? That single hair alone takes too long to imperfectly mimic.
Definitely because they were practical affects and not cgi.
@@caelestigladii If you think its impossible to fake the space footage and videos than you my friend have no idea whatsoever. I've done this over 50 years! and believe me they're all fake. No real photo of Earth from the space and so many other stuff
Yah you'd have to look for it very carefully. Plus with computers if they wanted to they could fix those small details.
If you didn't probably notice this, this means the actors and actresses did a great job at their acting
An amazing job.. They sold everything they did..
Yah not like actors today they suck compared to old school actors but that's due to Hollywood trading talent for political views for there leftist agenda or BLM crap.
Right.. imagine trying to make a classic look bad..and of all movies and time of year to pick..
@@SpaceRanger187
This video didn't make it look bad. If anything it's impressive knowing how the practical effects work. The video makes it clear this is only stuff you would see going frame by frame.
When my groceries fall out of my bags. I don't need strings. It just happens naturally.
You're just that good :)
Is it bad that I’m haunted by this scene each and everytime I’m hold grocery bags thinking they will just drop out as I’m walking?!?! Hahah 😅
@Fraser Kerr
:) haha
"Why is it that there's always someone who brings eggs and tomatoes to a speech?" :)

Film making prior to the 21st century is so fascinating. They were like "no one will watch this in HD at home so no one will notice our imperfections and tiny details"
Now its all CGI crap
@@Crusader1984 Agreed, I'd take practical effects all day, every day. CGI is way out of hand today, directors use it for the most basic shots and everything looks either too perfect or too fake now.
Well I mean it's not like they planned for the future. Look old CGI on HD tv and it looks really bad since it was rendered for low quality screens. Also another thing you'll notice on HD is when actors slow down there movements cause old cameras couldn't handle fast motion. It was such a pain doing that in film class or acting in front of a camera class. You had to even practice slow blinks.
And that’s the beauty of it. These guys just ruin movies
Read books.
A really cool thing to explain in the DVD is how much green and red they used so that it felt like Christmas even if you weren’t looking at Christmas decorations. Look at the house! Everything is red and green.
That fire trick actually makes sense, if you're head is being set on fire, you don't just stand there and scream, movie or not
I remember when my brother and I watched Home Alone with my dad, he pointed out that the groceries in the bag were empty because full containers wouldn't swing that much and they roll around after they hit the ground a little more than full boxes and bottles would do.
That's one of the things I always noticed since being older
Plus they'd be way to heavy for a scrappy kid like Kevin to carry home alone. Lol see what I did there 🤣
Aren't parents the worst when watching films
@@sw1000xg My mom's a nurse and she can always point out when a baby in a movie is just born that the baby is actually about five weeks old.
@@bradleymayse You don't have to be a nurse to notice that.
I always liked kevin's scream when the van nearly hit him. It always looked funny and unnatural and now i know why! Thanks so much! Great video
The scarf didnt have a magnet on it...the mechanical cooling fan attached to the engine is pulling air through the grill and through the radiator so that it can remove heat and cool the engine...it works off of the engines rpm and since he gave it throttle to back up which increased rpm of the engine then it was able to "suck" his scarf towards the grill...most cars today have electric cooling fans which cut on and off by a temp sensor so if you want to try this then make sure your fans are on and hold a paper towel or scarf or a light weight fabric In front of your car with it idling and you will notice the effect.
Van has a clutch fan, doesn't engage in reverse 🙏🏻
@@BariLopesh Yes it does silly...and if so then explain to me how the clutch fan knows when the vehicle is in reverse compared to in forward gear?
@@hoofarted8709 The same way a clutch knows of your going forward or backward
@@BariLopesh ...its not the same type of clutch as in a trans mission...are you trolling me?...im actually trying to be nice...a mechanical cooling fan is connected to the front of the water pump witch is connected to the front of the engine...the water pump has a pully connected to it and the accessory belt drives the pump...the mechanical fan and fan clutch is connected to a shaft that is connected to the water pump pully...the fan itself is connected to the fan clutch witch is actually a thermal bearing and when heat is absorbed from the engine into the water pump and through the water pump pully shaft and into the thermal activated fan clutch then the fan will start to move and draw air through the grill and into the radiator so that it can cool the engine and it doesnt mater if you are driving backwards or forwards...just ask your dad or google it:)
@@BariLopesh you do realize the clutch on the fan and a transmission clutch literally only spin one way
It's interesting that when you watched this in slow motion you caught these details in the order they are listed on IMDB trivia, and with the same notations.
Just interesting. 😘
Actually they are different. I checked
@@TheAaronmcmahon11 90% are on IMDB trivia, and 10% other YT videos.
caught in 4k
crazy. how a movie totally entertains a whole family without cgi
I would say the scarf was probably not magnetic, but being pulled towards the grille of the van by the engines fan from it being floored in reverse to make the shot. Production probably should’ve turn the fan around so it would “push” air out through the grille instead of “pull”. It also would’ve helped make the shot look more realistic.
Anyways, don’t know how this showed up in my feed but I like stuff like this so I subbed 👍
Yah it's very educational if you want to make a low budget film yourself you can use old school effects.
Exactly what I clicked on the video to say myself from the title and cover shot.
I think he simply meant it in a rhetorical sense of 'how could the scarf possibly do that with the car moving toward him', but of course the simple explanation is that the car wasn't coming torward him and the scene was just shot in reverse with the van pulling away.
Turn it around and it still pulls air not as efficiently. You need a reverse pattern blade twist
You cant use "engine fan moves scarf" as clickbait though
Loved the insights. I love noticing these things in my favorite movies. I think Harry with the wedding ring could be a continuity error or could be acceptable because he was robbing that house of it's valuables and possibly decided to try it on.
I saw home alone in the movie theater when it came out. It will always be a classic to me. I'm 40yo.....
Classic holiday movie, and I love the use of classic filmmaking for these special effects. They could have cheaped out and done composite shots, even in that year, but it definitely wouldn't hold up today if they had! The best effects with the longest "whoa, that looks great!" impact are practical effects which only use digital/process/composite effects as a final touch. Home Alone, Jurassic Park, and Terminator 2 (among so many others) still hold up extremely well, visually, because of this.
Agreed predator and the first alien films are just freaking amazing cause of the expensive effects. Chi crap just stands out way too much and still looks super fake.
This was fantastic Rustin. Well done sir, and thank you.
I'm 37 and watch this movie every year during the holidays and have since I was a kid. LOVED learning these things, what an awesome video.
HAPPY HOLIDAYS ❤
I think the biggest clue it was reversed is the exhaust cloud being sucked into the van.
exactly lol.
For me in my opinion Home alone is always top 5 in my list a awesome Christmas movie.
With a lot of memories.
Respect. 🙏🏻
Nice video.
Nice. Only detail I ever spotted is the floating crowbar which was held by an invisible string so that it would fall on Marv at the appropriate moment in the scene where Marv slipped on the icy surface
When I rewatched that movie last year, I did notice Marley’s stuntman. When you mention several times that there’s very little CGI in the 20th century, it makes sense how certain things can be exposed when audiences never notice any mistakes right away.
The problem with 20th century CGI, it was state of the art then and looked fine. FF 25 years and our TVs are all very high definition and it really makes 1st gen CGI look horrible. Plus people are spoiled now. Watch Babylon 5, you'll see what I mean.
@@tstahler5420 Couldn't tell it in 480p but that 4K definition shows everything..
This movie was a masterpiece. Part 2 was pretty good too. That nail through the foot will always make me cringe!
Yeah that particular part gets on my nerves.
I have seen so many home alone videos. This one really brought new facts! Love it! ❤️
Super cool video and very informative for future filmmakers
Great video…thanks for the inside info on one of my favorite movies.
These are really great finds! Very impressed and subbed!
Cool I noticed some of this because of you thank you :D
this video was brilliant mate🙂
Super cool, thank you! I actually talk about this movie quite often lol thanks to the behind the scenes that came with the DVD when I rented it years ago.
Dig this! Short and concise! Well done!!! 🤘🏼❤️
I'd actually always wondered how they did the blowtorch bit, but assumed it was real and just very controlled.
It was real. Joe Pesci suffered 3rd degree burns doing that scene. Google it.
Dude the first clip was absolutely WILD!! Ever since I was a we young lad I always though his walk was weird. Movie magic is AWESOME! & you just gained a new subscriber
Respect man. Great video and hidden details.
I had seen that reverse filming trick with the van before, but that flamethrower scene is something new! Very cool!
Very nice use of practical effects. Nowadays they'd have a team of 20 digital artists just to make the groceries fall out
20 digital artists if they want it to look good. But if they want it to be cheap they hire 2 and buy them a bag of energy drinks. And ten minutes before the deadline the director walks in again and says he wants an orange instead of an apple to fall out of the bag.
@@QueenOfDarknes5 no kidding 🤣
Cool video on a classic film. Two thumbs up my man.
Short and straight to the point. A great vid.
That peppers ghost technique is interesting
Thank you for this video. Very cool.
I love that RUclips recommended this close to Christmas.
I love old-fashioned in-camera effects! I wish they were used more often today instead of everyone defaulting to CG.
Thank you for this! I never knew!
Right. And you got all this by watching the film in slow-motion. That’s some brilliant deduction, my dear Watson!
Very cool observations.
Love your video
Too cool never heard of that "Pepper's Ghost" trick 💕👍
The movie is hilarious still til this day. Especially the tarantula on Daniel Stern's face.
Gold.
I actually knew all of these things because I listened to the audio commentary with Chris Columbus and Macaulay Culkin on the 2015 Blu-Ray release. Because I’m one of those people who likes to know “everything about everything” when it comes to my favorite movies and shows, I always have to watch behind the scenes documentaries and listen to the commentaries in order to find out how this scene was done or how that was made
Same for me. That audio commentary is great. I also love knowing every single detail behind my favorite movies. That’s why I am a sucker for DVDs and Blu-Rays because they contain bonus material.
@@CedricsSpecialLP I was the same way until streaming services came along. Now I only get the Blu-Ray copy for my absolute favorite films. Some films do contain bonus material (depending on the streaming service) but they can be limited, and there’s only so many films/franchises I’m willing to waste hours jumping through hoops on the internet/RUclips to find every piece of behind-the-scenes info I can get my hands on, if you know what I mean
These fun facts is actually fun to watch😆❤😆
Some of these missed the Blueray box set extras. Good stuff.
Well you learn something new everyday. Nice video.
My mind is blown, I watched Home Alone for the 10 millionth time because of this. 😂 Great video, keep up the good work!
You can also see the exhaust from the car going backwards too when played in normal
every year since 2018 ive come across new home alone behind the scene or analysis videos
You can even see Harry looking backwards while "driving forwards"
B-b-but... I've just read this "Pesci says that he did actually sustain a significant injury in a memorable scene in which Kevin's booby traps set Harry's hat on fire." 😱
Cant unsee this now.. next time I see this film I'll think about this video
Wow... great camera tricks, and even greater camera eye.
Its amazing what goes into a movie
It really is. I was an extra in Above Suspicion, starring Emilia Clarke. We filmed a courtroom scene in which she testifies against the defendant (I was one of his attorneys) on the witness stand. Though the screen time for that scene is short, it was interesting to see how many angles, perspectives, lens and filter changes go into the making of just one scene.
You had time to do this. And we found time to watch this.
Good work, I do have to admit some of these were pretty creative though.
One thing you missed is when Harry tries to walk up the front door steps before he burns his hand on the doorknob, when he slips and falls, the person that falls has longer hair, which is his stunt double.
I think the even more obvious tell for the first one is that the exhaust of the van is getting sucked into rather than being blown away from the van ;)
Still one of the greatest Christmas movies of the 90s
Crazy how it could almost be considered a 80's film since it still has those vibes and was released in 1990
That nail he stepped on was long as $#!+. If he really would have stepped on a nail like that.... It would have gone through his foot 🤣😂
Thanks for the analysis.
I love film stunt work and the best for me wre always the most basic stunts.
My favourite is the classic Western where someone is thrown through a window in a saloon fight.
Lol, you can show me how they faked it all you want, but it still hurts seeing Marv step on that nail.
I watched it again but at x0.25 speed. The strangest thing I found, that no one else will believe, is that it actually ran four times longer!
"Do we fix that or leave it in?"
"Leave it in. I doubt anybody will ever have a big enough TV or sophisticated enough equipment to view this in a quality high enough to spot it."
I'm actually glad they made this van part in reverse.
I think these practical effects work so much better on film than CGI. I wish movies still used them.
I like doing these myself too when i watch movies and i spot something odd. Its fun doing it
The exhaust smoke is moving towards the van and is shrinking in the first shot, which indicates that it was indeed filmed in reverse.
The "scarf stuck to the grille" is easy enough to explain. The van is running. It has an engine driven radiator fan pulling air through the radiator to keep the engine cool.
this is no magnetic scarf. they shot the scene backwards... i mean, the car stands near kevin and drove back... the scarf stuck in the car.
the scene was then showed backwards in the movie, so it looks like the car drives toward kevin.
Really cool.
I watched this in Christmas and Christmas Eve again like tradition 😂
I just watched this a few hours ago, so it's interesting to see this only a short time after watching the actual movie.
The nail scene was done perfectly because I still cringe to this day, even knowing the secret lol.
It’s that time again this movie plays every year and I throw it and watch it as if I don’t already know what’s going to happen
I noticed the one with the van when I saw it in the theater. Just looked weird, plus you can see the van's exhaust plume is moving in reverse.
I always wondered how they did the fire gag.
Finally someone did this
I think it's funny that the guy had a double to swing a shovel
The indoor sled slide scene sticks out like day-glow yellow >lines up his sled at the top of the stairs and you can see the front door doesn't line up.
Movie making 101:
Was it weird? Yes.
Did it get the shot? Yes.
Then it's not weird.
2:00 Didn't really think about this being a trick when watching, but it's the same way they did burning effects in Don't Go in the House, but thankfully Harry has his clothes on.
I will never get tired of watching this movie ♡
One of my favorite all time christmass movie
this is no magnetic scarf. they shot the scene backwards... i mean, the car stands near kevin and drove back... the scarf stuck in the car.
the scene was then showed backwards in the movie, so it looks like the car drives toward kevin.
The final act of Mad Max 2 has a lot of gimmicks that you can spot in slow motion, like when the motorcycle gets pulled under the wheels of the big rig, there is a wire holding it in place which then releases it to get crushed. There's even a shot where the truck smashes head on with a car, and all the other vehicles are stationary, but it's so quick, you don't notice.
There is also Guy Norris's stunt (the insane flipping after hitting the car on a motorbike), with wondering how they did it and safely did it. Was it wire fu early on with a car rig? Nope a stunt went awry, he was meant to ramp over the car to a degree, instead he hit it, did way too many tumbles and broke his femur. Luckily George Miller (the director) is /was a medical doctor and was able to tend to him before they evaced him out. It was also his first time as a stuntman. He returned to the franchise for Fury Road as a stuntman and stunt coordinator
Cool 😎👍
Also with the van, the exhaust cloud is noticeably getting smaller as it approaches Macaulay 😂
I just watched this last night and did notice the rubber chair. LOL
When you see the shot of the van and culkin walking. You can see Harry looking backwards as hes backing up
Always wondered how they got both shopping bags to burst open at the same time!
Please make this your next video but can you make a fun fact about Birdemic: Shock and Terror!! Please Please Please❤❤❤❤
I love noticing these little things, even after watching the movie for the bazillionth time. It's normally the old, out-of-date stuff, like the star-scanner at the grocery store Kevin goes to.
But, I'm starting to notice background stuff. Like, in the beginning when the pizza gets delivered, Kevin's mom says something along the lines, "I hope everyone is drinking milk, I want to get rid of it", which is a valid request, given they're about to go on a big trip. But then she opens the fridge and I noticed inside were two full gallons of milk! Either that Paris trip was a complete surprise or she grossly miscalculated milk consumption prior to leaving. Either way, that was poor planning on her part. No wonder she forgot a kid at home! 🤣
I like these quite a bit. Very informative.
But when Kevin opened his mouth, like, not in the reversed version, it looks like it just pops out of place and closes. It looks almost automatic.
0:31 Anyone that knows anything about cars can tell you why that scarf lifted. Ever heard of a radiator fan?
