You can call torts volatile or a loose cannon but you have to respect him as a coach, he knows what he's talking about and works just as hard as any player. He's passionate about what he does and takes it seriously.
He came at the right time, just wasn't allowed to make some mistakes because the timing to 'win' now was the priority that didn't have a owner with a long fuse. Torts could have got them to the Stanley Cup - but not in just one year. Sullivan as his Assistant was brilliant and should have been allowed to try the following season with Torts to see if they could have gotten there.
XBOXRULES The Canucks overachieved with that roster the next year under Willie, but they played absolutely miserably the season following the surprise playoff appearance. Ownership refused to rebuild, putting the team and organization in the current position it's in now.
“You gotta turn away sometimes and let ‘em make mistakes and play.( that’s how we learn)...do not listen to the noise, just stay with the plan...” That is so true, Coach! 👍👍👍We need to give our young players time and room to develop and grow. C’est en forgeant qu’on devient forgeron.
Torts said awhile back on his way out of Vancouver that he believes he is a great teacher and based on everything I just heard, I agree. He definitely knows what he's talking about.. but everyone always criticizes how he executes. Much respect to Torts for being Torts lol
This interview just proved how good of a coach Torts really is, he sees how the NHL changes and he actually will adapt as a coach to improve brilliant!
The Sedins were seen as soft because they were part of the team during the dive-fest years. Kesler and Burrows were the worst offenders, but it looked bad on the Sedins since they were the team leaders at that point. I think that's all there is to it. If anybody was actually thinking that the Sedins were easy to knock off the puck, or pushovers in the corners, they weren't watching very closely...
I do think in their younger years, when they were the second line after the West Coast Express, their puck protection was a comparative weakness. It was mainly due to a lack of strength. They got stronger as they got older though.
Torts got a raw deal in Vancouver, never should have been fired. He was stuck with a bad, stale team and never had a chance to win with that lousy team.

Not when he was in Vancouver lol. One season he literally didn't call the minor team once. Something was up with him then- totally checked out.
Great coach that came into Vancouver at the wrong time.

They did overachieve.
Torts was right at his final interview as Canucks coach team was stale and needed to rebulid
Where is he the right coach for? I think every decent player Columbus has had over the last 5 years is gone now
Hes referring to jamie benn and tyler seguins calling them names, not to mention david bolland. Great praise from tortz
This was great. Well said, Torts.
Nice to hear you again, Coach. Really great comments both on the Twins and the Building of the New Canucks; Great Advice too!
Thankyou Mr Tortorella, its been my hockey team since 1970 as a fan, even as a kid snuck into the Pacific Coliseum to watch them, yes, school hookie

Very thoughtful comments about NHL today and turning young players into Professional NHL players.

What could have been that season with Torts as the bench boss.
Even with that line brawl incident. Torts is a great coach. Sedins were awesome.
Either he's always been this way and his fiery side overshadowed it, or he's grown alot since then. Either way, great interview
Thx Torts...

Canucks need to hire AV, Crawford and Torts
Yeah, Torts tried to turn them into "shot-blockers" . . .Lol.
Alain Vigneault is the coach who knew them best and got the best out of them.
