    Wow. As an eye care professional, graduating optometry school in a few short months, I am glad to hear that you have actually done your research. Yes, most of the discomfort that comes from staring at screens stems solely from how dry your eyes get. There is virtually zero affect on long term health risks to your eyes outside of dryness. Albiet, dry eye is one of the more prevalent eye conditions that plagues people with about 80% of the population falling to a diagnosis of Dry Eye, but only feeling the effects of dry eye when the symptoms and the condition are progressed to a severe state. The breaks that you talked about are what we like to call the 20-20-20 Rule. For every 20 minutes of screen time, look 20 feet away for 20 seconds. Practicing good visual hygiene as the academics call it is what can bring you that edge when it comes to your vision and not having it be a hinderance to performance. Other issues such as focusing and double vision should be reserved for visits to your eye care professional, such as an optometrist.

    • @dacmister
      @dacmister 3 года назад +91

      And as I was finishing the video, your comment about feeling "nearsighted now" is called accommodative spasm which can happen when you are doing near vision work for an extended and prolonged period of time. You can maybe circumvent this by wearing cheap over-the-counter reading glasses, but it will be trial and error, hit or miss.

      Everything you said was super awesome and helpful and thank you SO MUCH for this info! I need to figure out how i can include this in a video some how as an update. I was really unsure with everything I was reading on IF long term health risks existed so I was ambiguous about it and am glad you could verify that!! Thank you again for viewing and the info!!

    Before I started playing Valorant I also used to play with my monitor far from my eyes. But transitioned with my monitor around 5 inches close to my face, but with it I got into a habit of regularly resting my eyes, as I continued to get eye strain (even before I switched to this setup).
    A closer monitor just gave me a better sight on the pixels and more room for my arm and mousepad. (My posture for fps games is to have my whole arm resting in the table, and my table isn't that spacious, so I basically had my arm around the base of my monitor)

    One thing I feel with your test is that your crosshair may have felt out of wack because it IS. I know it comes down to personal preference, but not having even a single pixel of reference of where the middle of your crosshair is may be less distracting and allow you to see pixels in really niche scenarios but I think being able to see EXACTLY where it is at all times is a huge benefit, it eliminates any human error of mistaking where center actually is.

    I personally found out that sitting this close could also help your slouching habits as you're not wanting to lean more forward. Could be just me, but I figured I'd throw this in.

    1. Take a break atleast once a hour and focus on a long distance atleast 10m away from you. Do it for like a min or two every break. Helps your eyes to relax from close range focusing so you do not get "cramps" in your eyes.
    2. Use moisturizing eyedrops
    3. Have the right creen settings. Light, contrast, colours etc.. If your in a dark room, maybe you should block some blue light and use a warmer tone. Use rgb/a lamp behind your monitor.
    4. Have a chat with an optician. a good idea is to have personalized glasses while playing

    I have a hard time getting my eyes to focus after moving them quickly. They do focus, but very slowly. So for competitive games, I keep my monitor further away, so I have the majority of it in my vision at all times so I don't have to move my eyes as much.
    For single player games however, I do bring it closer so I can get more detail and help fill my field of vision so I can immerse myself better.
    For competitive games, I also have to have the surface my keyboard and mouse is on as level with my chairs armrest as possible.

    Ive been wearing glasses for 12 years and at some point tried out contact lenses, i'd like to say that if you wear contact lenses, your eyes will strain less and they will be more hydrated when playing, because the contact itself has to be hydrated, as for the glasses i have everything possible to protect the eye in the glass itself but it still gives me high headaches because i also play rhythm games,FPS games,MOBAs and MMOs. The one that obviously gives the most strain are the Rhythm and FPS games because you are required to put in all of your focus into them and blink less, i used to game in the dark but i started turning on a little light to balance out the light in the room and you should also open the window for more air obviously, i dont think that sitting close to your monitor will make you a better player, it literally all comes down to personal preference and what works for others the best.

    So I am an Immortal player, so not pro or anything but I'm pretty good I'd say, and a tip I have for people who wanna try playing closer to your monitor is to use your monitor setting to artificially shrink your monitor so that you don't have to move your eyes as much, and personally that has helped me with the eye strain caused by moving my eyes so much and has helped with tunnel visioning.

    Long range fights is where you really notice , the only map I know where there are huge range duels is dust 2 in CSGO , because of the distance everything is so small you feel the need to get closer.

    Very interesting video! Dip in performance can just be attributed to not being used to being so close to your screen.
    just getting used to your own settings and not flip flopping between different resolutions, graphics settings, crosshairs, sensitivities, etc. is by far the most important to build muscle memory and consistency.
    That's what i think anyways, i personally sit in a very ergonomic position, right angle legs, monitor an arm's length away and looking straight ahead my eyes meet the top of my monitor.
    Additional note, i highly advocate for lights on while gaming. I used to have dry eye and eye fatigue but it has gone away as i told myself to take breaks, etc. No need for blue light glasses, just have a nice desklamp, remember to blink, and use eye drops if necessary :)

    Gaming chairs are more of a gimmick and ergonomic ones will probably benefit you way more in terms of health, posture, and gaming performance.

    my monitor is relatively close since my desk is a small desk but i like it close since it helps me focus better and that its feels like your actually in the game which also helps me focus more.

    So first off I have a crazy gaming chair, luxurious leather seating. Anyway, I used to have the exact same issue, feeling like pros use close monitor so I should but playing better with the monitor far. But every time I switched back eventually I wanted to go back to close more and although it feels more uncomfortable it became natural I could really be immersed and see things I could never before. So I got used to it, but now my hands are uncomfortable under my monitor but my gameplay has gotten so much better. Idk it screws with me now too like after screens I get nearsighted but if I move my monitor I can't help but look at the background of peripheral things from peripheral vision. Its like for me I got better after getting used to close monitor but overall affected comfort, but if I choose comfort I constantly hit this skill ceiling and lose the ability to frequently be hitting transient hypofrontality or (extreme focus where time dilates and slows)
    Edit: Like even now when using my 13' MacBook my screen feels far, when it is a good distance from my face. But after about an hour of use I get used to it and it feels like my monitor is close again. So odd
    Thats just my experience tho

    For games like osu! I play more like 3:45 to be more comfortable but less exaggerated. For FPS, I sit slightly closer to the monitor. I also like to have everything else out of my prereferral vision or at least in an organized way. (Yes I used to have OCD but it's a lot more controllable now) I think this type of stuff also applies for mouse sensitivity. All preference.

      I relate and agree! For fps im pretty even in posture and positioning but for more laid back games i kinda like a nice slight recline.

    I am not a "pro" whatever that means but I can tell you playing at a high level its easier to hit the headshots when you can actually see the crosshair.
    If you want to nail headshots you need a really small precise crosshair , I myself do the smallest dot possible and I have a huge TV screen which is more comfortable than sitting with a monitor 2 inches from your face.

    • @joeroganpodfantasy42
      @joeroganpodfantasy42 3 года назад

      The pros response is actually more detailed, I now watched the video, its true the micro adjusting to the head is easier and doable because you can see the head and the crosshair as if you were sitting further away it would be extremely hard uncomfortable and a guessing game . Micro adjusting was the word I was looking for.

    I have myopia and its so bad that even if something is only a ruler away it becomes blurry. I once had to play without my glasses because they were being repaired and i had to sit close like this to my monitor compaired to how i usually sit far away (kinda like the guy you showed laying down on his chair) and during that i realised that i was able to make small adjustments better and notice things better which helped me alot because i use low res and also was using chamber at the time so which helped me hit 1 taps better and do 2x better than i used to. After that game i got my glasses and played another with it and how i usually sit and it ended up with my usual performance.

    Because they’re on 24” monitors, this is due to that size being predominant in pro tournaments. That’s literally the only reason. If you play on a 27” monitor or larger, you can sit a little further back and get the same effect

    I struggle to play with my monitor to close. Yes I see the advantage in terms of not missing pixels and making micro adjustments but I also see the disadvantage of not being able to check your minimap at a casual glance. I feel like at a healthy distance I have a perfect balance between keeping 1 eye on my gameplay and 1 eye on my minimap at any given time. If my monitor is to close I feel like I have to take to much of my vision off of the action to check the minimap 🤷‍♂️ anyone else get this?
