  • I bought a used 4 post lift to install in my home garage with a 10 foot ceiling. I want to be able to store two cars through the winter and be able to use it for other vehicle work. We set it up with an engine hoist and not much else.
    This model of lift is no longer being made but here are a couple on Amazon that might work for you:
    TRIUMPH NSS-8 8000Lbs 4 Post Lift: amzn.to/3LRfJQJ
    Triumph NSS-8SQ Shorter 8000lbs 4 Post Lift: amzn.to/3yZywBy
    APlusLift HW-8SXLT 8000Lbs 4 Post Lift: amzn.to/42Eylcn

    Stumbled across your channel while searching for videos on four post lift. Glad I did. Just curious as to the brand and model number of the lift? And if you don't mind me asking what the cost was. In the process of building a new garage and I'm trying to figure out what brand of lift I'd like to put in there. Nice Chevelle!

      Hey Slim, the lift is a Quality lift built by Challenger Lifts. This is a 9,000 pound version and its about 10 years old. I bought it used from a friend and I paid $2,500 for it and he helped me tear it down and set it up. I don't think they make this model anymore but not totally sure.

      @Matt OverDrive where I'm at I can only build a garage 24 by 30 ft I'm going with 10 ft walls with scissor trusses so I can get the height. Just trying to find a lift that's narrower so I can save some space. thanks for the reply.

      @@slim_pickins6393I went with a 24x30 but I opted for 14ft walls. Highly recommend to go as tall as you can. I’m not sure 10ft walls would work with the lift I went with. A challenger CL4P9W. With an suv lifted it takes up every bit of room in a 14ft wall building.

    Consider repurposing garage door safety sensors in an “X” pattern on the ceiling to prevent getting a car “too high” to go back down or from hitting the ceiling. They might be able to disable your existing garage door opener to prevent the door from opening when you have a car on the lift.

    one tip. Lower the hoist a bit when you're going to work on wheels, brakes etc. Otherwise, when you jack the car, the roof will touch the ceiling. 😉

    I had a 4-post lift in my home garage. IMO it was worth every penny I paid for it. I made a couple mods that were helpful.
    1. I constructed a light tray with a 48” 2 bulb fluorescent light fixture that slid along the same rails as the jacking tray.
    2. I added 3 duplex receptacles, 1 at each end and 1 in the middle. Hope this helps.

      That's a great idea on the sliding light setup. I've been trying to figure out a way to get decent light on this thing. The LED strip lights just blast it right in your face so I don't want to go that way.

    I wish they would build more damn houses with double deep garages. It's annoying AF with how small they make garages anymore. It's all dependent on how many acres you are on now...arg.

    Your door can be reworked to roll up closer to the ceiling (raise the tracks) and also change the opener to a side mount which mounts directly to the torsion bar (Liftmaster 8500W) and will give a foot or more lift clearance..

    • @MattOverDrive
      @MattOverDrive  Год назад +3

      Yup, did this myself a few months back. I was able to raise the door 18" and I went with the Liftmaster opener. It was pretty easy to do as I already had winding bars.

      @@MattOverDrive lights on the wall side of the ramps and post, the reflected lights better then it in your eyes. Use 4' leds.

  • @bobbg9041
    @bobbg9041 9 месяцев назад

    I belive you can buy the parts to raise the garage door to the ceiling
    But i would also go with a side winder type lift motor, home depot has them they run about 400 and some change the side winder motor attaches to the torsion springs bar you change that out replace the end of the rod bearings with pillow block bearings that have grease zert's on them because its really hard to get any lube inside the pressed bearings and make dam sure you oil the tracks change the rollers to nylon type with nylon rollers and oil the spring twice a year yes you have to oil your torsion springs or they break.
    I had an end shafts bearing bind up, it bent the shaft and took out the 3/4 hp lift motors gears, i had to cut the lift cables and park outside for a long time cost me a grand to have the lift cables shaft system and berrings replaced and i didn't
    Have the cash at the time to do it.
    If you can set up a 4 post lift DIY
    You could deffently raise the door its not that hard, the danger is winding the torsion springs.
    The side winder lift motor isn't har either.
    Put 4' led bulbs on the side of the lift post facing the wall, youll get plenty of light from reflecting off the wall you can also put them on the wall side ramps.and make a long loop of wire to let the lift go up and down. If you put them on the wall the lights always going to get in your eyes trying to work on stuff.

    Nice lift ya got there . I put a midrise scisor lift in my garage . Debated a 2 post but didnt want the posts in the way causing door dings and mishaps like that. Mine looks to have the same pump, I have 220 going to mine and its much faster. May be something for you to look into. Anyway congrats on the lift and looking forward to more vids on the red Chevelle , she looks like a nice solid project.

Good for storage,exhaust, trans work. But your still sitting on ramps to do brakes instead of all 4 wheels off ground. . Head banger.

    Dude, awsome lift. and great Chevelle. I love your rim and tire set up. could you please tell me your rim and tire size with what backspacing you are using front and rear. I have a 1970 GTO and I am having trouble finding combos that look great and work well. Thanks. Also how do you liket the BFG tires I am looking into using them also. do they hook up at all?

    • @MattOverDrive
      @MattOverDrive  9 месяцев назад +1

      Thanks! The rims are 8x18" with zero offset. Rear tires are 255/40r, and the fronts are 245/40r. They hook pretty decent, but I can drive through them depending on the road. If I did it over again, I would have gone a little wider on the rears, rim, and tire. I have 315's on the rear when I autocross on a 10" rim, and it works. I wouldn't go wider on the fronts. My comp tires are 285 for the front, and it sucks to drive on the street.
