- A video about the basic aspects of keeping a venus flytrap alive.
The most important requirements are:
-A lot of sunlight, or a growlight indoors.
-Soil free of nutrients or fertilizers.
-It should be watered with distilled, RO, or Rain water which is free of minerals or other dissolved solids.
-Keep the moist but never standing in water.
-For dormancy keep it outside until november, then bring it inside and keep a growlight over it, turning it on at 9am and off at 3pm. Наука
thanks for the info I am only 8 and I got just got a Venus fly trap and it is my responsibility this video really helped

MICHELLE SHANNON OMG IS HE ACTUALLY??? U WERE 8 AT ONE STAGE
"They really like sunlight."
* Looks outside at Scottish weather *
*shit*
Lmaoo
Oh shit
😂😂😂
Them grow-lights though...
Scots can be so pessimistic. The weather here is almost the best in the world, we have all 4 seasons, warm summers with light till 10pm and if it doesn't rain for a week we panic and think it's a drought when other places it doesn't rain for months so we have lush greenery in summer and spring. We have mild winters where snow is not an every day thing like other places in the same latitude, we think it's cold at 1 or 2 degrees when Russia, Scandinavian countries, Canada & northern u.s all drop well below zero every night, some places have to use wd40 on their locks & door handles so they don't freeze. We get a few days of snow and we panic and trains, roads, supplies come to a halt when other countries have to survive with it or worse for weeks & months. We don't get hurricanes, tornadoes, floods are rare, earthquakes, droughts, it might reach 30 for 3 days in a row in summer and it's all over the news about people dying of heatstroke when other places like the middle East, East Asia, southern and central America, Africa have to cope with 35 40 or more like all summer or even all year round. Come on the weather in Scotland is not bad! Lol it might rain quite frequently and cloudy but it could be FAR worse! The British isles are probably the best climate in the world we have a beautiful island which is so under appriciated.
what a dominant voice. my venus trap is moist
He said not to keep them humid, they'll rot? So if it's moist that's bad

This comment section is lit. Who would've known a venus flytrap video would have all the funny comments.
My daughter just purchased this plant yesterday.... I had no clue how to care for it... It came with instructions but I'm more visual. She's a child so mommy to the rescue😬😂
Yes! FINALLY!!! Thank you SO MUCH for making a straight forward, easy to follow, and extremely informative video. I have been going nuts trying to find just a basic "how-to care for..." video for months. You're awesome!
Thanks. I still think it was too long and would have preferred to make it 5 mins long tops...but I have a tendency to blab on and on.
Liguus where can I buy those seeds???
@@adulapuramakhil871 actually he says in the video: you will not find seeds to buy. You will find plants with 3+ years age.
@@brazilrio thanks for the response,
Even though they won't grow in my region
So I lost interest in them
@@TheBonsaiJungle NOT AT ALL! You have a direct speaking style...much like a friend sharing with a ''newbie.'' I've looked at a lot of these videos and yours is by far the best! Thanks!
I'm totally hooked on these plants suddenly. I'm currently growing 4 different types, including a rather large pitcher plant. I just ordered another 3 types of different fly traps as well as 2 types of Sundews. These plants are nothing short of fascinating. And this guys videos are by far the best resource for their correct care that I've seen.
mrtrek64 Thanks for the complement. I have a few videos I plan to record on more of my Carn. plants in the upcoming weeks, mainly one about growing cephalotus, and then one of my artificial lighting set up. And yeah, this hobby can become addicting lol. I think I may have more than 50 different types of cp's currently.
***** As you already know, there certainly is no shortage of opinions on how to care for these plants on the net. When I purchased my first few traps back in the spring I followed incorrect advise on their care, resulting in the pedals and stems turning black and starting to die off. I was mistakenly keeping them in indirect sun light (why this person gave this advise I'll never know). But after following your advise, I kept them in direct sunlight for as many hours as the day would allow. Now the traps are growing amazingly well, with large vibrant pedals and new growth spouting all the time. One has out grown it's container which I'll repot next spring.
Like you said, it isn't hard to grow them if you're following the correct advise on their care. And I do look forward to your indoor lighting video because I have one large pitcher plant which is tropical and will have to be brought indoors for the winter. I'm really keeping my fingers crossed hoping it survives the indoor environment.
Thanks again man :)
mrtrek64 what level did your weepingbell evolve at?
So where did you buy them from
I few years ago I got a Venus flytrap and it wasn't very happy so I put it outside in a kind of hidden place, and then it really looked bad and sunburned. I got busy and forget about it. Months later I found it and it wasn't very tall but it looked very healthy. It was getting cold outside so I brought it inside. It died in no time. I did everything wrong.
Zom Bee Nature well it was just acclimation sunburn which isn’t a huge deal. Not sure why it died when you brought it inside though, would have to know more about the specific set up.
If it was getting cold out and it was warm in the house maybe shock?
Zom Bee Nature basically me handleing my life
You should get a pet rock no food no water no mess.you would be good pet rock owner👍👍👍
@@e13cess i will try it. Any recommendations?
I bet this guy's house has, like... No bugs at all.
Fox Trap Collective actually there are some bugs in my house. I'm raising a colony of dermestid beetles to eat the flesh off of roadkill I find so that I can reassemble the skeletons and feel like my animal biology degree did not go to waste.
Liguus That is actually amazing. :)
Liguus omg your reply 😅😭

Liguus +1000 Internet respect because that was a beautiful conspiracy theorist paragraph
EXCELLENT point on moisture. I personally scouted them in the wild to photograph and even during a drought! They looked great at Cape Fear Park!
Well, after having many VFT over the decades I have finally managed to keep one alive and even thrive. Great video and information. Thank you!
Most articulate and precise video on plants or any subject I've seen. I closed my eyes and I didn't hear or see obama, but as others have noted, got a bit moist.
Best advice I've heard so far. All these tips really worked thanks!
+Marco Murillo ours didn't seem to go dormant. We thought with where we live it happen easily enough indoors but it didn't work. Going to try to follow his instructions on that this time because it seems ours aren't going to come back, seems the plant got exhausted and burned out. All his other tips were really helpful and our plant was super healthy.
Kristen Reyes-Marion where can I buy these seeds??
Thank you so much for this info! The guy from whom I bought my 2 meat-eaters told me that they are swamp plants and they need moisture, naturally I over-watered them, so your advice just saved my plants!
This is my favorite plant. My wife just got me one on a whim because I mentioned it to her in passing. I really, really appreciate you taking your time to make and post this video. Your new channel fan Bob
Very informative and straightforward delivery. You made it easy to understand while still giving all the necessary information. Just the kind of tutorial a beginner needs! I am a first time Venus Flytrap owner :)
Excellent information!!! Thanks for the tips ! I purchased some hybrid Venus Fly Trap seeds & going to give it a try!
Thanks so much for the info! I could listen to you talk plants all day!
I just bought my first venus fly trap. I am glad I got to see this video first. You really address the plant needs. Will collect rain water for the baby venus fly trap.
Wow, I learned a lot here. I would doubtless have killed my newly acquired plant in short order had I not looked up your video. Thanks.
im growing my first fly tap, I find them sow interesting, great video man
This guy is extremely informative when it comes to Venus Flytraps. Lots of great information! I gained some valuable knowledge about watering my plants. Thanks!
Super informative! The most informative video on VFTs i've seen :) Thank you!

Very good info man. Bunch of thanks!
By the way, try joining a rock band on your free days yeah. There are a lot out there desperate to find someone with good vocals like you.
His voice is so soothing. Very informative. I want some.
Thanks for the video! My 4 year old has just become very, very interested in the Venus fly trap. He does not like bugs yet so I figure getting him one and helping him take care of it properly is a great idea.
"They really like sunlight."
* Looks outside at arizona weather being at 110 heat*
....Crap...its to hot ..
They would be ok in a shady area, or under a set up with shade cloth.
thank you! i got mine from wal-mart. the care instructions say :
keep moist all times bright indirect sunlight
use diluted fertilizer monthly
Alma Miles Dei that is because you can kill them and keep buying them. Good for business. Ha ha
just purchased a VFT and this video was super helpful! thanks!
Jake is 7 and got his first Fly Trap today and he says "this was very good video - I like your video - thank you for doing the video I liked it alot" I didn't want my fly traps to die
Good info thanks
Thanks dude! This video helps alot, I have around 23 venus flytraps to take care of and this video just made it easier
This is a great video on the Venus Flytrap! I'm so glad you did this video. Very informative.

Wow thank you so much. Very helpful. I just got a lil baby seed almost two months ago and these babies are sprouting and now I know how to keep them alive! Also, I'm currently taking a public speaking class and this speech was super well organized and just overall amazing. Great job.
+Gianna Isabella I never was good at public speaking. Honestly I just turned the camera on and started talking about flytraps for this vid.

RUclips: you have to take care of them
me: on second thought, nevermind
Cody I feel the same way about children LOL 😂😂
Thanks, you just put all my hopes and dreams of a vivarium full of carnivorous plants and orchids to rest.
Dodgy Bishop other plants will do well in terrariums (any tropical sundew species, small nepenthes, Heliamphora Minor), just not Venus Flytraps (or Sarracenia).
Super jammed with information in this. I watched it twice. Thank you for this. I'm from Arizona
Very clear and to the point! I just removed the water filled dish that my brand new flytrap pot was in. Thanks!
Just picked one up from Lowe's my first one.

first video ive seen that isnt bullshit.. great vid. i bet you grow some excellent meds.hahaha thx for sharing buddy
Nah no way. Proper grow lights cost a lot. I'm barely getting by with my CFL bulbs.
haha t5? multispectrum?
+Mike Amann I just sort of use the bare minimum cheapest option. I think T5's would be the next step up, but a number of people are fans of the LED growlights.
Wolfpath Wildlife i need help... I accidentally scattered soil while potting a different plant and some of the soil went into the traps and they closed. What do i do? Will they die?
You covered everything about this plant in the video, Thanks.
I just found your videos the other day and subscribed I love them and thank you so much for answering my question looking forward to checking out all your videos
The college im at has them growing in straight vermiculite! Its a weird one yeh but they seem happy!
Ps , will we get an update on your bonsai's this year?
yeah, that's possible but unless you have that sitting in a water tray you have to water like crazy!
My bonsai's are dead. Couldn't bring them to college and all, but I'll be starting some ginkgo seeds this year.
Thank you so much! You are so helpful😀
Thanks for the info! My boys just picked some up from Home Depot and I was looking for care info.
Thanks for this info! I did everything wrong when I bought one last year, now I feel like I can try again.
I live in a tropical country with no winters. Humid with average temperature of32°c. Just got the plant and know abt the dormancy period and I can put in the fridge. how do I care for it this way? water? need sunlight? do I put it in a ziplock? pls advise. Thanks
grace sun I don't really like fridge dormancy as it can lead to rot and fungal issues. I would probably just bring it into your house and put it under a short-day cycle growlight.
Your hair is amazing. Great info!
Frances Haskell yeah. It's a shame that it's falling out. Oh well. Nature is indifferent.
Wolfpath Wildlife go to a Dermatoligist 💗 there are lots of new ways to prevent fallout
Josiah I don't think dermatologists have any new breakthroughs, otherwise bald people would not exist!
My mothers hair was falling and she was starting to get patches and she started using potatoe shampoo (i think u can find it online) and her hair grew back were she had patches. She started using it because a neighbor recpmended it, she use to have thin hair but now she has a lot more hair. It doesnt hurt to try :)
Karina Cardoso I am not going to try a nonsense method. You might as well start doing African rain dances to water your plants.
Thank you for this informative video, also I'm loving the hair!
Thank you. Considering getting a few of venus flytraps and this video was very helpful.
Thank you sir
Iv bought these in a kit as seed im gonna give it a go i keep bonsai aswell and understand about dormancy etc which is interesting to know about these venus traps! Do i need distilled water for seeds?
i recommend it yes i use rain water on my seeds if i can get it. If not i take destilated water
Definitely, Tap water will burn the delicate roots of the developing seedlings.
could i put the vft's in a green house outside in the winter for dormancy or just stick with the windowsile, and also how much water should i give it if i measure using table spoons?
The recap at the end definitely did it for me! 💪 Awesome presentation sir!
Thanks for the video dude! Very informative. I used to have quite a few carnivorous plants as a teen and recently thought about getting some again, but I'm a little rusty ;) Thanks again!
...Patrick Warburton? xD
Anyway I should mention that the VFTs I grew where I used to live still went dormant with seemingly no problems despite the on average 23°C highs and 8° lows during the winters. What I think helped was the fact that the sun arc was low enough during this season to the point where the tall trees northward of the plant kept it sheltered for most of each day.
Yeah i think the amount of light they get is the main concern for dormancy. I've kept some no lower than 24°C (75°F) year round and they still went dormant.
***** Woh, no lower!? Amazing find, I'll have to keep that in mind in the event my family decides to move even _further_ north. It might just save me from having to throw the plant into the refrigerator, although if we get so equatorial that we practically don't get seasons, I might be in trouble...
Thanks for replying.
Wolfpath Wildlife would you recommend any specific grow light over the t5?
Kronk?
Indeed.
Thank you so much
I'm really excited to have my fly trap, this was very informative.
I always have to watch this every April/may...you're the man, I've been in the hobby for over 15 years, started in wi, now in northern co, so had to change dormacy processes several times (yuck) you're the man, keep up the vids.
I have wanted a venus flytrap since I was young and now that I have one I know how hard it is to take care of it
I hope you did well over the past five months. If not, try again. We all kill a few before we become good growers. Don't neglect the pitcher plants and sundews. They're wonderful plants to grow too.
William Albert see In the northern part of America winter is the only thing keeping me from getting on
Hmmmmmm all the sun has been had in Ireland , said no one ever
Very helpful and straightforward. Thanks.
Nice video I can always appreciate a good video straight to the point no-nonsense no beating around the bush. I definitely agree 100% sometimes people just mess with their plants too much or do not give them the right attention I feed my traps once every 2-3 months Maybe I only feed one trap one time that's it for watering yep distilled ro
I want to buy a Venus fly trap but I have a few questions, one being people say that the trap only closes a few times in its life then dies, so like, what, once they all close a few times the plant is dead?
And two how does it just re grow? Do I need to physically take out the old trap that's dead?
Alyssa Kara the whole plant doesn’t die, it’s just the individual traps that die. The individual leaves will digest insects about three to five times then turn black. You cut off that leaf but new ones keep growing from the center on the plant.
Where can I buy those seeds???
Akhil Adulapuram up your ass
Joseph Stalin fuck off
Akhil Adulapuram You can buy the seeds online, but they won't have seeds at any stores.

Thank you! This is great and really helped me care for my first fly trap!
Thanks a lot! I came here to find out about watering them but learned a lot more. I've had my seeds in the freezer for almost 48 hours and I'm adding rainwater to the soil tomorrow to plant the seeds on. I hope this isn't a bad time of year to grow in my apt.
In the fridge right? not the freezer?
this guy is very handsome
keep it in your pants Baddie
Baddie Bones, maybe for a girl. lmao
Nah, dude's fuckin' hot. I don't give a shit who you are or what genitals you might like, this man is attractive.
Hey, has Abercrombie contacted you yet? This guy should audition/interview. :)
Inappropriate
hol up
since the roots are just anchors if i keep a one of these fuckers on a table with out soil and i feed it normally is it still gonna live
Emitv remember, the roots are still a living part of the plant and they need constant stable moisture so that they don't deteriorate, so your "no soil" method would not work for very long.
This video was perfect. Straight to the point !
dude this was a great help my mom and sister already started watering them with bottled/sink water so now i got it under control ✊🏽
well, i just realized that i probably killed my plant that i got today 😳

I just bought one at a flea market here in Columbia Sc, & this video helps a lot.
there s flea market ??? ... 😐

Yes, there's 2 actually, both on highway 1. The first one you come to from downtown is US 1 Flea Market in Lexington on the right & about 2 miles further down is Barnyard also on the right.
I just bought a Venus fly trap plant, I will try my hardest to take care of it but I get confuse when I look at many videos, I will take his advice sounds the best to me thank you very much.
excellent video. straight up facts and everything makes sense unlike the videos that have them sitting in water trays. constant water surely results in rot.
Steve Grabnormous thanks. This is a good reminder for me. I still feel like I didn’t explain the watering aspect well enough. Kind of hard since most people want to sit them in water, and when I say “keep them drier” they may start having them dry out completely. The goal is to have the sphagnum feel like a “wrung our sponge” pretty consistently, never getting soaking wet or dry all the way through. Definitely something I’ll have to dedicate an upcoming video to, and I will likely just redo this entire video this year with updated advice and examples. Added it to my list of video ideas.
Thank you! Excellent video, very informative :)
Nice and informative, and it’s always cool to see another longhair out there :-)
