  • A video about the basic aspects of keeping a venus flytrap alive.
    The most important requirements are:
    -A lot of sunlight, or a growlight indoors.
    -Soil free of nutrients or fertilizers.
    -It should be watered with distilled, RO, or Rain water which is free of minerals or other dissolved solids.
    -Keep the moist but never standing in water.
    -For dormancy keep it outside until november, then bring it inside and keep a growlight over it, turning it on at 9am and off at 3pm.

      Scots can be so pessimistic. The weather here is almost the best in the world, we have all 4 seasons, warm summers with light till 10pm and if it doesn't rain for a week we panic and think it's a drought when other places it doesn't rain for months so we have lush greenery in summer and spring. We have mild winters where snow is not an every day thing like other places in the same latitude, we think it's cold at 1 or 2 degrees when Russia, Scandinavian countries, Canada & northern u.s all drop well below zero every night, some places have to use wd40 on their locks & door handles so they don't freeze. We get a few days of snow and we panic and trains, roads, supplies come to a halt when other countries have to survive with it or worse for weeks & months. We don't get hurricanes, tornadoes, floods are rare, earthquakes, droughts, it might reach 30 for 3 days in a row in summer and it's all over the news about people dying of heatstroke when other places like the middle East, East Asia, southern and central America, Africa have to cope with 35 40 or more like all summer or even all year round. Come on the weather in Scotland is not bad! Lol it might rain quite frequently and cloudy but it could be FAR worse! The British isles are probably the best climate in the world we have a beautiful island which is so under appriciated.

    I'm totally hooked on these plants suddenly. I'm currently growing 4 different types, including a rather large pitcher plant. I just ordered another 3 types of different fly traps as well as 2 types of Sundews. These plants are nothing short of fascinating. And this guys videos are by far the best resource for their correct care that I've seen.

    • @TheBonsaiJungle
      @TheBonsaiJungle  8 лет назад +3

      mrtrek64 Thanks for the complement. I have a few videos I plan to record on more of my Carn. plants in the upcoming weeks, mainly one about growing cephalotus, and then one of my artificial lighting set up. And yeah, this hobby can become addicting lol. I think I may have more than 50 different types of cp's currently.

    • @mrtrek64
      @mrtrek64 8 лет назад +7

      ***** As you already know, there certainly is no shortage of opinions on how to care for these plants on the net. When I purchased my first few traps back in the spring I followed incorrect advise on their care, resulting in the pedals and stems turning black and starting to die off. I was mistakenly keeping them in indirect sun light (why this person gave this advise I'll never know). But after following your advise, I kept them in direct sunlight for as many hours as the day would allow. Now the traps are growing amazingly well, with large vibrant pedals and new growth spouting all the time. One has out grown it's container which I'll repot next spring.
      Like you said, it isn't hard to grow them if you're following the correct advise on their care. And I do look forward to your indoor lighting video because I have one large pitcher plant which is tropical and will have to be brought indoors for the winter. I'm really keeping my fingers crossed hoping it survives the indoor environment.
      Thanks again man :)

    I few years ago I got a Venus flytrap and it wasn't very happy so I put it outside in a kind of hidden place, and then it really looked bad and sunburned. I got busy and forget about it. Months later I found it and it wasn't very tall but it looked very healthy. It was getting cold outside so I brought it inside. It died in no time. I did everything wrong.

      could i put the vft's in a green house outside in the winter for dormancy or just stick with the windowsile, and also how much water should i give it if i measure using table spoons?

  • @billforigno
    @billforigno 9 лет назад +3

    ...Patrick Warburton? xD
    Anyway I should mention that the VFTs I grew where I used to live still went dormant with seemingly no problems despite the on average 23°C highs and 8° lows during the winters. What I think helped was the fact that the sun arc was low enough during this season to the point where the tall trees northward of the plant kept it sheltered for most of each day.

    • @TheBonsaiJungle
      @TheBonsaiJungle  9 лет назад +4

      Yeah i think the amount of light they get is the main concern for dormancy. I've kept some no lower than 24°C (75°F) year round and they still went dormant.

    • @billforigno
      @billforigno 9 лет назад

      ***** Woh, no lower!? Amazing find, I'll have to keep that in mind in the event my family decides to move even _further_ north. It might just save me from having to throw the plant into the refrigerator, although if we get so equatorial that we practically don't get seasons, I might be in trouble...
      Thanks for replying.

I definitely agree 100% sometimes people just mess with their plants too much or do not give them the right attention I feed my traps once every 2-3 months Maybe I only feed one trap one time that's it for watering yep distilled ro

    I want to buy a Venus fly trap but I have a few questions, one being people say that the trap only closes a few times in its life then dies, so like, what, once they all close a few times the plant is dead?
    And two how does it just re grow? Do I need to physically take out the old trap that's dead?

    • @TheBonsaiJungle
      @TheBonsaiJungle  6 лет назад +5

      Alyssa Kara the whole plant doesn’t die, it’s just the individual traps that die. The individual leaves will digest insects about three to five times then turn black. You cut off that leaf but new ones keep growing from the center on the plant.

    • @TheBonsaiJungle
      @TheBonsaiJungle  6 лет назад +7

      Emitv remember, the roots are still a living part of the plant and they need constant stable moisture so that they don't deteriorate, so your "no soil" method would not work for very long.

    excellent video. straight up facts and everything makes sense unlike the videos that have them sitting in water trays. constant water surely results in rot.

    • @TheBonsaiJungle
      @TheBonsaiJungle  4 года назад

      Steve Grabnormous thanks. This is a good reminder for me. I still feel like I didn’t explain the watering aspect well enough. Kind of hard since most people want to sit them in water, and when I say “keep them drier” they may start having them dry out completely. The goal is to have the sphagnum feel like a “wrung our sponge” pretty consistently, never getting soaking wet or dry all the way through. Definitely something I’ll have to dedicate an upcoming video to, and I will likely just redo this entire video this year with updated advice and examples. Added it to my list of video ideas.
