When I was a kid my parents took us to Myrtle Beach for vacation.... along the way we had a flat tire. We all got out and waited for my dad to change it.... I was wondering
around on the side of the road that was near a field.... as I was walking around I realized there were hundreds and hundreds of these things growing in this field
next to the road. The ground was spongy and there were mounds of moss. The plants were growing among tall weeds... I was floored by how many there were. I
also noticed there were many sundews all around that were bright red and about the size of a quarter... there were so many you could hardly walk without stepping on
them.
This happened back in the 70's. Years later I went back to Myrtle Beach for a vacation and tried to find the spot (I knew it was near Conway, SC).... but for the most part
the area had been developed into a golf course.... I was never able to find the spot and I doubt it even exist anymore.
dont you love it, the government jails or fines you if you take some from the wild, however its ok for someone to lay a suitcase of $$$ on the table to develop a golf course. Same is true with the marijuana push in the states. It was a horrible offense if caught selling or growing, and having a felony charge slapped on you, however down the road the same state that jailed you and wrecked your life determines its ok to sell due to the revenue it will receive......
Very sad... No wonder why pollution is getting worse, greedy humans cut trees and exotic plants to build their "fancy" malls, apartment complex etc.
They didn't even use the land for something good. They used it on a fucking golf course.
@Locust Hypnosis You beat me to it lol. Was gonna say the same thing
This makes me sad
I named my fly trap Hydra, cause it just keeps growing more and more heads! I've grown it from seed, and consider it my child lol
Mines named Tom :))
Mine is audrey ^_^
Is it hard to grow them from seeds?
Also, how do we get seeds from the plants themselves?
I named mine Hydra too!!
I named mine Grimes after her song Venus Fly hehe
My 8yo son asked me about Venus Flytraps yesterday, and we watched this video. Great information, we both learned a lot. Ordered one this morning to surprise him on his last day of 2nd grade this year! Hope it comes soon! Thank you for the excellent informative video and easy website.
@@samanthacooper8435 omg what is that emoji I want it
Here's a tip: If you want the plant to conserve its energy, you cut off the flower stalk as soon as it becomes visible, because flowering wears the plant out if it doesnt get fed.
Yes, I heard that many years ago too. Mine is slowing down for winter, but has a flower stalk so I was thinking of cutting it off.
K
@@bill-2018 if the flower stalk already flowered then it’s too late to cut it off and you’re better off leaving it on.
@@Tatusiek_1 OK, thanks, it's only just showing so not flowered yet.
So what happens if you feed it often and let it flower.
I recently purchased two flytraps from your company, they are growing amazingly and so healthy. Thanks !!
The B-52 variety
Kris Sykes same any tips I only having them out for four hours this week then slowly adjust it to all day so it doesn’t burn
I just got the B-52 would love to see how big it got for you

Fresh owner to a venus flytrap and I'm so happy I found your channel, thank you for the useful information!
Well shoot Just bought one from Walmart and planted it in outdoor potting soil in a pot. It'll have to get the right soil for it now. Thanks for the tips
I like how I click on a video about plants and actually see a plant instead of someones face. Thank you for that. And you continue to show the plants while giving information. Much appreciated!
I named mine Swamp Thing. I'm excited to learn more about carnivorous plants. I hope I can keep her alive!
Did she make it
We found them growing by the lake where we had a cottage in Maine when I was a little girl. I couldn’t believe my eyes when I found them!
This is the most informative and well presented video I've seen in RUclips about VFTs. Clear voice with no nonsense. Thank you Devin!
Best video on the Venus flytrap I’ve seen thus far.
This was very cool. I just bought one on a whim because they’re so unusual . The care instructions said not to keep it too wet, but I had my doubts ; so I’m glad I found you . I’ve got it under a grow light and have been feeding it insects. So far so good , but I will take your advice and move it outdoors with water. Looking forward to learning more about this great plant 👍🏻👍🏻
Thank you so much for this! Now I’m annoyed bc Walmart’s sell them and keep them next to registers and obviously they die from no food, water or light! What a damn shame!!!
Man i wish my vft looked like that those are gorgeous
The bright pink of the venus fly trap is amazing! 💖
I just got my first plant. I’m so excited!
New venusflytrap owner here. I live in Wilmington, and have for many years. Just decided to take one in yesterday and ive become obsessed.
Named mine Jackie Chan. Thank for for the helpful info!
little buddy at 4:44 got confused and munched on that autumn leaf 😭
Thought I was the only one that saw that 😂
Bought from you INCREDIBKe mines b52 cane from you it was small NOW ITS GROWING more and more heads and you gave us 2 extra plants for the price of 1!
I'm in arizona and I heard they can't tolerate very hot temperatures. It regularly gets 100+ here should I keep it inside?
You should put it outside maybe at a time when it is not so hot so like in the morning or afternoon then bring it inside near a window for the rest of the day.
use shade cloth
Your info has been very helpful, and saved my plant. It was looking very fragile when purchased, but now looks very healthy. Wish I could include a picture.
I successfully over wintered my flytrap on Vancouver Island BC, probably the only place in Canada it has a chance!
what did u do?
@@EEZZVOLT Cut off the water a bit, and let it go dormant on the deck, thats about it. It can tolerate mild freezing.
I randomly found a venus flytrap at walmart yesterday and I instantly picked it up and bought it! Loveee! ❤
This video just made me order a Dente and Red Dragon from you guys. Wanted that B52 but they’re sold out 😔
I just purchased the B52 from your website. I am really excited when the plant arrives.
Those venus fly traps are so healthy and beautiful
i just bought a b52 from your website and im so excited!!!
Thank you soo much Devin! I have been looking for more detailed information on caring for venus flytraps for awhile now. You've provided more info in this video than anywhere else. I have 3 plants at the moment and I believe they are all of the dented variety, they aren't really red at all but have the short hairs, got 2 from the grocery store and 1 from a rare plant grower. I try to feed them once a week since they are inside but I've noticed when I feed one trap, all of the traps tend to close, not right away but they're often still closed a week to 2 weeks later. Is this normal? Am I overfeeding?
Those are some really awesome looking VFT’s. The red color quality on those B52’s is amazing.
I'm super confused on the peat moss and sand and just the soil in general I wish there was a full video just dedicated to the soil to use.
I saw a recipe recently. Maybe on sarrancenia.com. I used 2 parts dry spaghum peat to 1 part pool sand. I wet half the peat till it was water logged, then mixed in the remaining items handful by handful til the whole mixture was like grainy bread dough. Then I covered my substrate with orchid moss..
Soil must be nutrient poor so to simulate the bogs since they get the rest of their nutrients from the insects they eat.
The flower stalks have evolved to be so long so that the flowers can stay above the water line. Otherwise pollinators can't make it to the flower. Once seeds develop, they need to dry out to fully mature or else they'll mold as well.
Awesome video. Thanks for sharing!
or so that the vft doesnt eat its own pollinators
Thank you for this video! I live in the desert, so our sun exposure might be too harsh for this plant. Any advice on how to help my Venus flytraps thrive in these conditions?
assuming you still have it…😭 just put it out for 6 hrs and then after keep it in a window. that’s what i do down here in south fl.
@@cherrymintzasmr797 leaving it outside for 6 hours during the summer will dry it out. The water here evaporates extremely quickly, unfortunately we don’t have humidity.
Glad I found this info, all I've read on Swedish seller sites said to keep the plant in a bright window but not direct sunlight and that it's fine to plant in regular potting soil.
Since I've joined the Facebook group and then found your channel I realize I need to change my plans of how and where to keep my flytrap, the plan was to have it as company in my home office but I guess I'll put it outside instead, just need to get hold of proper stuff to plant it in.
WOW! I did not know Venus Fly Traps were from North Carolina (I thought they came from Venus?!). Why don't they just call them "North Carolina" Fly Traps then? :)....I'm totally kidding. That is amazing "food for thought though",.....I honestly thought Venus Fly Traps were originally from the Amazon Rain forest or some place like Thailand. Pretty cool!
I'm from the UK and had one as a kid. I always assumed they were from the Amazon too. About 5 years ago I moved to Wilmington NC, which as this video says, is the center of the relatively small area where these grow in the wild. Was amazed when I saw them growing in swampy areas in the State Park and other local areas. I bought one a few years ago and it keeps dividing so I've got about 15 of them now.
@@jameslind1964 nice!
I grew up in North Carolina and had no idea they existed in the wild here until I saw some while hunting in a swamp around Wilmington. I thought I had made some sort of fascinating discovery until I did some research and found out they were indeed native plants and fairly common around that area. I believe there were pitcher plants around there too, the kind with the lid on it.
They are also native in Virginia as well. Humidity and mild winters. Thank you for getting good information out there I always feel sorry for all of them in Walmart.
Just purchased my venus from you all. Should be here today. (9/19/23)
Just transplanted mine which I got from Home Depot into a bigger pot. Made a mix of peat and perlite mix; I've never been able to grow them successfully no matter how hard I try. Hopefully I'll be successful this time.
@lasthumankind A plastic pot with a built in water tray.
You’re doing good in terms of potting it up, is it outside or under a good grow light?
@@zay_rat8942 Outside, I don't have room for any grow lights.
@@plantguy9 do you have water trays below it?
@@zay_rat8942 Has a built in water tray and I do check on them. One has a flower stock growing, letting it flower to get some seeds. Wanna grow my own from seed.
I live in Vegas where it is extremely hot, should I bring them inside when I feel it is to hot?
What you feel is too hot could be just fine for plants.
You need to figure out what their growing conditions should be and go from there.
What I mean by that is, if you have a spot that gets morning sun and afternoon shade, maybe it's OK. If you have a spot that has all day sun, then it could be fine as well, if you put them in a tray of water and don't let it go dry.
While each growing zone can have general directions, it's up to you to figure out what micro-climates or locations you have around your home and how to best support the plants you want to have.
they’ll be fine as long as they don’t dry up
Thanks for all the helpful hints and tips. My wife just bought me a Venus fly trap and I love it. Thanks again
So how do u feel about them being in terrariums?
Bad idea, they like being out in the open sun and like to experience the natural temperature shifts
We got ours in the mail from you guys yesterday. Its in perfect shape, we love it!!
Please make a video on propogating fly traps from leaves. I would love to know how.
Same!
Thank you Devin for this thorough information about VFT’s you are a great teacher!
I live in Colorado. I have started a Venus Flytrap in a terrarium. Do terrariums encourage growth in dry climates like mine?
Don't keep them in a terrarium, dry air is ok for them, just give them direct sunlight and have them sitting in a pot with destilled water at all times
Do not put them in a terrarium, just grow them outside and keep them moist. Colorado’s dryness isn’t that bad
Wow those look fantastic!! Flowering and everything
You still alive?
When the leaves start dying off should I prune them or will they help fertilise the plant. Its a generic store bought plant im growing outdoors in the UK
My fiancé for 7 years knows my obsession with plants especially carnivorous plants. Now I’ve never owned one. But despite my love and knowledge of plants he and plants tend to not be friends…. Anyways yesterday he surprised me with a Venus fly trap. I was super excited but of course he didn’t know buying plants from big box stores isn’t always good cuz they tend to not care for plants and that the reason I’ve never bought a carnivorous plant is because they tend to love humidity and stuff like that and we live in Indiana United States. Sooooo it doesn’t just frost here it freezes big time in the winter most of the plants currently (I use to have a garden but long story short am living in an apartment so right now) I keep my plants outside during the summer and warm seasons and bring them in during the cold. It’s September here so it’s not cold enough yet to bring all my plants in but I will probably bring them in either this week or next because it’s starting to drop down into the 50ish next week at night anyways my whole reason I’m saying all of this is I don’t even know where to begin to keep it alive especially considering where we live. But I want to try I don’t believe in ever giving up on a plant. Like I will try even when someone’s like bro that looks like there’s no life in there lol which suprisenly usually works in my favor anyways but I just I’m lost af on what to do. Like I know they love humidity but if I keep it in a container for humidity how does it get insects….. also is it even warm enough right now for it ti be outside with my other plants just omg help me with please someone
You guys never discuss the challenges of growing VFTs in central Florida. That would be a very interesting video guide.
Any video can't discuss challenges of growing VFTs in every location. All it can do is provide general guidelines. It's up to you as the owner of the plants, to find what works in your region or micro-climate.
Eg, many people are confused by how much sun or water a plant needs. That's because there is the general guidelines, and then there are the guidelines that works for some people in some area .
Watering 2-3x a week isn't going to work as well as having a pot sit in a tray, if they weather or sun is really hot. And saying it can be in full sun in Wisconsin summer is different from full sun in Florida summer or in Arizona summer.
Thank you for this I really did learn a lot especially about the way the leaves grow and the flower I never knew they actually got flowers awesome thank you
What other carnivorous plants grow in the same soil as a Venus Fly Trap? Google tells me Intermediate Sundew and Yellow Pitcher Plant.
Also, how do you keep mosquitoes from spawning in the standing water of the tray?
Use mosquito bits to stop the larvae from spawning.
Glad I watched this my new and very first has black on the green leaves almost looks like mold.
I live in Brazil, there’s any chance of buying some of your plants? And the shipping is available for international purchases?
if you are buying live plants, they'd probably be dead upon arrival, your best shot is getting seeds
@@jewiesnew3786 I got one from eBay, came with no problem
@@jewiesnew3786 Many seeds are scams that are completely different plants, and you never know what will grow from them even if it’s a venus fly trap they wont be true to any variety.
@@Tatusiek_1 that's why you should buy from a reputable seller. As for vfts, I buy them as clones from local growers in my area, you can join groups in fb or any other platform to find cultivars you like.
@@jewiesnew3786 I never bought seeds, when I bought mine, they were clones from a reputable seller done by tissue culture. No seed will be true to cultivar because it is sexual reproduction so there will be random mutations. Clones are true to the mother plant.
Jessi Mae brand soil is the ONLY soil we have had luck with. Found it after killing off several plants and have had none die since. Grabbed it on Amazon and it was very inexpensive.
I think all of us planters understand the same thing and that is we don't have enough time in our life to plant everything is takes me a couple years to fully understand my plants and to have them from ways away from their homes and different climates, so I gotta learn their pros and cons like a human it take a bit to get to know someone yah know😝🤟
Wow!! This video taught me so much, I always threw mine away when winter came!! :( Also I kept them indoors cause I live in Tucson AZ, will they be ok with our heat?? Perhaps as long as they're sitting in distilled water?? Thank you for your video!
I just got one. Also in Tucson. How did yours do?
@@kimberlygilbertson9639 once upon a time she was doing great, but I think I actually killed it by taking it inside because I thought the heat was killing it. But over not too bad, do you know where to get some
@@chrstphrdickey I got mine at Lowe’s today on Oracle near the Tucson mall. Do you kept yours outside. In the direct sun? For the whole day or just part of the day?
@@kimberlygilbertson9639 Nice okay, I wanna see if they have some. Not sure of the season, but yeah I had it on my apartment balcony, so not completely in the sun but it had sun on it all day if that makes sense. But I think when I got sketched out and started bringing it inside around noon or so messed with it. I think as long as it's well watered it can take the heat. Have you ever been to the little shop on 4th Ave downtown that sells all kinds of carnivorous plants? I want to check out different ones too.
@@kimberlygilbertson9639 lovely weather we're having this morning!! 😆
great video dude. just bought my first trap today from a national chain and i already love it. i’m completely new to plant care and growing so i figured might as well hop on YT and see what up. thanks for the info!
In Florida, having a vft in those boggy pots will definitely attract mosquitoes 🦟. And probably a bunch of other critters. So it may be a benefit to the plant, But it can backfire since they won't catch all the insects , especially fireants, bees, wasps etc. Would there be a better predatory plant for Hot humid South Florida with dry , sandy ,rocky soil? Replace the native soil with the type they need.
You can do American pitcher plants/sarracenia I think you can use some sundews too, not entirely sure though
Can you tell me what size pot they prefer? Would they rather be kinda cramped? Or do they need good amount of room to sprawl & stretch out?
Thanks
Appreciate the videos man
Thank you for the information I'm looking to get some.
I want a red dragon so bad
I jus bought a Venus fly trap from Walmart and my dumb self just planted it in normal soil. I just ordered some orchid moss. Going to be a new experience.
I just ordered from you guy and my B52 is super small. Found huge reg Venus fly traps at Walmart for $7. Wish I received a b52 like the one your showing. Mine were only like 3/4 of an inch or smaller.
I live in SC. Would have never known they were from here. Cool.
4:45 the bottom right trap closed
R.I.P
Are there any species of flytrap that don't need a seasonal period? If not, what about sundew and pitchers?
There’s no other species of Venus fly traps, I think drosera capensis (cape sundew) doesn’t require dormancy, pitcher plants aren’t all the same, American pitcher plants require dormancy, tropical pitcher plants don’t, and I’m not sure about heliamphora
4:44 bottom right
The new variety: the Venus Venus Trap
Anyone know which types of carnivorous plants are best for indoors? I’m preferential to the ones with movement, which I’d believe would limit me to Venus flytraps and honeydews but willing to do others.
Sundews are great, nepenthes are too but you’ll have to make sure they’re humid and there’s different temperatures for them, low land nepenthes like it warmer and high land plants like it cooler, if you’re getting an ultra high lander (Villosa) you might wanna change since those can take a long time to mature
best looking B52s ever! red dragons look good too.
I live in Wilmington, looking to grow them in my veg garden for pest control. Think it would be pretty easy after watching your video, thanks for the info!!

I just received my first plant. when and how often should I repot my plant and what is the best soil to use based on your experience? I hear so many different soil recommendations and options, including those you mentioned in this video. Look forward to hearing from you. Thank you.
Over the weekend i placed 2 orders I've sent an email and I tried calling the number on the website and nothing. Where did you go to order them or any info on how I can contact them. Please and thank you.
Emilio,
I did not purchase my first two plants from them. I ordered mine on amazon, from Joel carnivorous plants. I too tried contacting predatory plants for info and got no answer.
JP27 I ordered from him, did he send a paper that tells you how to take care of them? When I got mine, it had a paper that show hows to take care of them.
The Dragon Queen: I just purchased my first VFT from these guys, my other traps were from another seller. They did send a care sheet, but it is just the basics. I was having issues with my traps but now they are thriving!
I will try to plant, those in Brazil, some great flyeaters will start to apear here!
First time viewer..excellent...thanks
I love the B-52 trap I just bought from your nursery and she is super happy in the container bog I just made. Haven't named her yet though.
@Predatoryplants Do cloned vfts require different care then ones grown in the wild? I recently purchased a new dente clone. I was wondering if I should put her outside with my other vfts.
Same care for all
Thank you for the superb video! Yours are so colorful! Right off the bat, I learned that you can grow these in Orchid moss! I did not know that! Which is your preference: perlite or silica sand?
I am in San Jose, CA and sun can be very scorching with 90-100F+ temps, so is that OK to be out in full sun in growing season without getting fried? Great intro video. Thanks Devon.
Thank you for the info
So glad I found your channel I just ordered a B52 off your Amazon store.
How's your B52 now?
Awesome video thanks! Once the traps start to die and turn black would you recommend trimming off the leaf?
Could you do a video on how to give them a winter dormancy indoors? I've heard people put them in the fridge. I'm not sure quite how to do this.
The red dragon one is lovely.

Any advice of growing them in the northeast where it can get pretty cold in the winter?
Put them in a unheated garage
This was a super great informative video!!! Thank you so much. Mine are ready to be repotted. This was so helpful to know what is coming up in its lifecycle.
These plants are very useful, when my ex came over to get her stuff I asked her if she would water and feed my traps, I told her to first stimulate the plant by placing her finger into the jaws.......
Great video perfect description of care.
Should the flytraps be removed immediately from their casings after purchasing them? I got one that has like a cup with a hole on the top and it seems to keep a humid environment, which is stated, that the plant likes.
It’s best to replant in a bigger pot so that the roots can expand and grow and be healthy and not become root bound. A quick search on tips on transplanting plants will help!
Hailey Miller just got some sphagnum moss today to repot into a tall container! Thx hope it's happy now :O
How often should I spray my fly traps with Maxsea fertilizer?
I’ve also noticed some of my fly traps are growing deformed leaves from the spider mites. How often should I spray them with insecticide?
I have VFT, and they appear to be healthy but not as bright with the red. . . Even my red dragon VFT’s this year did not regrow red anymore, why is that? I have both some plants inside under artificial lights, and some outside.
You guys gotta make more videos
Well I live about 2 hours away from Wilmington NC so I should have the perfect environment
My daughter bought one for her bday and now all but some of it is dead... im trying to save it and hope I can..I did take it out of her room (which can get very hot) and bright it out to my kitchen where it's nice and cool. It was very dry and now I have plenty of water for it. I'm how for the best but till another plant grows there's no way to feed it. Thank you for your video!
Get a grow light. Whether in your daughter's room or your kitchen, you didn't mention that it's near a window. Not that the window means it gets enough light, that's why you still should depend on a grow light.
As for feeding it, find bugs or look into other artificial types of food that other hobbyists use.
How would they fair in SoCal heat? I have a dog who, obviously, goes to the bathroom and draws flies through the droppings, so I'm hoping a little plant buddy will help, but yes. Would keeping them hydrated often be enough, or should I put them out of direct sunlight?
they should be fine, if it gets over 100-105 they may start to suffer a little and if you notice that, use shade cloth. Otherwise as long as you keep them hydrated they will be fine because when the water wicks up, it has a cooling effect
During winter dormancy do I still feed my Venus fly trap ? And what do I do with the black dead leaves and heads
