- On today’s video, we explain how Steven Gerrard transformed Rangers and ended Celtic’s dominance of Scottish football.
When Rangers hired Steven Gerrard in 2018, the Glasgow club had only been back in the Scottish top flight for two seasons, and had just finished their latest campaign in third place, behind Aberdeen and 12 points off Celtic at the top. Having suffered the humiliation of liquidation and demotion to the fourth tier of Scottish football six years earlier, fans of Rangers could only watch as their Old Firm rivals won title after title, getting ever nearer to the fabled ten in a row - a feat both clubs had narrowly missed out on in decades past.
Three years later, and he has succeeded in stopping Celtic at the final hurdle, and in the process has made people sit up and take notice of the Gers once again, with his side even progressing further in European competition than their arch enemies in recent years. Soon we’ll see them contesting the Champions League for the first time in over a decade!

Phenomenal accomplishment from Gerrard. Everything the guy touches turns to gold. You can see by his values, focus and work ethic that he earns his success. Rangers are lucky to have him. Very reminiscent of pre health issues souness. As a jambo I never thought celtic could be toppled so quickly but needless to say I'm glad they have been.

@@miff2011 Morelos was introduced to a new role which is similar to Firmino. He creates space for players like Kent and Hagi and links up the attacking play. People who only look at stats from BBC would think he’s not doing much but when you watch Rangers play, u notice the impact he brings to our team

Gerrard earned my respect by rebuilding the Gers as a side to be feared. Lennon’s style was woefully stagnant and couldn’t compete with Gerrardball. Can’t wait to see how Gerrard and (probably) Howe get on next season.

It's simple really. Celtic, after having Rangers thrown out, enjoyed a decade of no challenge in a one team league so just cruised along. Whilst Rangers worked hard, developed and improved with the fruits of that labour coming forth this season. Of course by the time Celtic have realised that after all their cruising, it is now too late for them to stop Rangers.

Its very typical of the old firm rivalry, one of them dominates and becomes complacent after several years so the other catches up.
Back in the 90’s it was Rangers that was dominating Celtic completely with a 9 in a row run.

You forgot to add this in, Celtics wage bill when Ge55ard arrived was £60 million a year, Rangers wage bill was £25 million a year.
Rangers wage bill has increased year on year since Ge55ard took over but its still only about two thirds of what Celtic spend on wages.

Whilst a lot of people pointed out Celtic's self destruction contributed to Rangers' success rather than Gerrard. I feel like if it was anyone but Gerrard, Rangers wouldn't have had the run they had. So I like to give Gerrard a lot of credit.

Just to put it into context for people not familiar with Scottish football, the reason gerrard celabrated the win over celtic like that because a couple of weeks earlier neil lennons celltic were battered by rangers for 90 minutes the Celtic golie had the best game of his life and celtic went on to win the game with a goal in the last minute of the game where 3 players were offside and lennon rubbed gerrards face in it aswell as the players plus we hadn't won at celtic park since 2011 so the celebrations from gerrard were exactly what we wanted and expected and after the break we did fall away but we would have won the league had it been completed and celtic new it and that's why they asked the other clubs to suspend the league which they agreed to, you don't understand the bias against rangers but that's a whole different video but not only are we up against all the teams in the league we are also up against prejudice from the referees and the SFA who are the only fa as far as I'm aware that referees the rangers games after the games have finished and look for reasons to give our players bans so when you understand the complexity of scottish football and the biased we have been up against it makes our achievements this season all the more sweeter and its no surprise rangers are doing well in europe because we don't suffer from the bias in the european games and the players can relax and express their selfs,but seriously if you are a gerrard fan and have just tuned in to this video for a summary on how gerrard is doing try watching rangers for one season and you will see what gerrard is really up against and why this is alot more sweeter than alot of other league titles that we have won plus the fact that we are the defending champions, you will see a brilliant season and rangers have a few rivals and hard games in the league it's not just celtic that the fans hate each other it's probably worse against aberdeen it's bad against Dundee United and hibernian aswell and hearts away is a hard game for any team no matter how good they are playing so plenty of interesting games to watch if you watch rangers for a season

Gerrard has definitely improved Rangers. But Celtics downfall is our own fault. Arrogance at the top who thought Rangers were too far away to even be a challenge. Appointing Lennon permanently was the beginning of this downfall.
Rangers could have won the league last year, they just crumbled after New Year, for people without the green glasses on people were concerned. The 1-0 League Cup final was a massive wake up call, again which nobody took advantage of.
Can't say they don't deserve it, they 100% do. But it is not all down to Gerrard, gross negligence from Celtic and the ambition to be 'just better than Rangers' is the lack of ambition that has set Celtic back a decade.
I wouldn't be surprised if Rangers dominate the next year or two, Celtic have a massive rebuild and Rangers I don't see letting up for a while.
Don't like either of those two clubs but I wouldn't ignore the amount of money spent to stop Celtic's 10 in a row - which may be deja vu all over again. All the points you make are fair as well.

Celtic self destruct was because Rangers were that good & blew Celtic away , it's the first time since 2011 Celtics had any real challenge, they basically won 8 & a half titles beating poor oppositions, Brendan Rodgers is a great manager, but Buck Rogers could have managed Celtic & still won the league, Rangers when they came back up, were ill prepared, bringing in Duds like Warburton, Caxinha, Mcall & Murty, guys who should never have been near the Ibrox hotseat, same with the playing staff, Senderos, Barton, Holt, Cribari, Black players who would never ever get near Gerrards squad, guys who were past they're best years ago or just weren't good enough, Celtic looked great in Scotland against mediocre opponents, but it's been proved in the last 9 seasons in Europe, once they came up against any decent team, they would always get found out, wherever it was Delia, Rodgers or Lennon in charge, same with bang average players like Brown, Forrest, Ajer, always found out against superior opposition, don't believe me, check the facts......as it's been proven, one serious challenge from Rangers & Celtic crumble, my question is ? Can Rangers under Gerrard dominate for the next few years 🤔 ps from a Motherwell & Liverpool fan⚽

They were so focused on their holy grail of 10iar and they 100% thought they were getting it. Appointed that clown "Celtic-minded" Lennon to see it over the line and he made some awful signings. But Rangers were relentless and thoroughly deserved our title. You've got to hand it to Celtic though, all the laughs they've given us to get through lockdown 👏

@@iVekoh I did look it up,I went to the SFA website ,it told me Rangers had won their 55th title,I then went to the SPFL site,it said the same.I then went to the UEFA site,it said likewise.Just to be extra sure,I went to BBC,STV,ESPN,RTE in Ireland,Globo Esporte in Brazil,they all confirmed what I thought ,Rangers FC have won 55 Scottish league titles

I know I’m a bias Celtic fan, but I genuinely don’t see the hype around Gerrard. This season, fair enough, he’s done really well. But against who? The competition is the worst it’s been in a long time, and there was no teams putting any pressure on them. They’ve been known to bottle opportunities to go ahead bc of the pressure teams put on them. But when Celtic are at the worst they’ve been in years, it doesn’t take much for a team to take advantage. He’s obviously a decent coach but certainly nothing special

Well done for Rangers! Well deserved after their long time suffer. Great performance and not only in SPL but in Europe as well. But we should not forget that Celtic also helped a lot to Rangers to get the title. Looking at the transfers, signing rather undermotivated players from PL with huge sum considered as a bad business. Celtic made lots of mistakes in the transfer market with large wage bill. It showed in Europe the most when they got beaten by European mid level teams. Neil Lennon as a manager performed very poor in Europe, and was out smarted by other coaches from the continent. They believed that what is enough in SPL would helped them in Europe as well. If i remember correctly the Hungarian Champion Coach said this is a different level and not a SPL, yet Celtic was eliminated by them. This is something Rangers should avoid and learn from this and not only look for names to sign but personality of the players behind. Anyhow, personally i am happy to see Rangers come back which would make the SPL more interesting. Huge respect for both Celtic and Rangers. Hope to see you both in Champions League.
