I think I've figured it out. So the girl ( forgot her name but not the mother ) you could see the light fade slightly and- I watched this over and over again to figure it out. Their lights mean hope, feeling, and I saw mostly that when their lights faded when they became angry. So hope and feeling is what the lights mean ( My theory, I'm trying to see if there are more meanings.

Sorry, but no. Being a single mom is no excuse to being a shit parent. There's a reason why single motherhood is the highest cause of crime across the world. (Single fatherhood actually had relatively normal results to having 2 parents)
Also, you can see at the end Heidi's eyes have the light back in them. To me that's her realizing she'll forgive them and remembering how much she loves him, how she'll be there for him even with these mistakes. And oh my goodness I didn't think that small detail would make me cry

I didn't think it was possible, but the arguing before the actual song started made the entire thing so much worse, and all the stuff Evan said... it makes me hurt inside for his mother. Which I guess is the point.
It's basically about Evan, a guy who has anxiety and wants friends. Jared is his family-friend and only talks to Evan to have some money from his own mother. Connor treats Evan, but starts softening up. He writes his name on Evan's cast. Connor kills himself later, after he had stolen a letter Evan had to write to himself. Connor's parents finds the letter that says "Dear Evan Hansen" and "Sincerely me". Then, Evan can't help but start lying about his friendship with Connor. Just watch it. It's so goooooood!!

I see a lot of people bashing on Evan for being so inconsiderate to everyone in the course of the play, but I'd like to point out something: this boy thought he was a burden to his mother. From the very beginning when his father left them it's very likely that he would start letting his imagination go wild and think it was his fault that his parents got separated. From the perspective of someone with an anxiety disorder, he would of probably tried to cause as minimal trouble as possible for his mother, and fail miserably because of his own illness. Anxiety and depressive disorders are very much real. Despite how popular they've become throught the years, there's still people out there who think it's just "in your head" or to "think positive", and even though it's partly true, there are times when you just can't control how you feel. You have a chemical imbalance that needs to be dealt with, and that doesn't make you weird or different. But most of us see it is as a burden, just like Evan. This boy was trying for years to get better, not just for his mother's sake but also his. He had feelings of guilt, inadequacy, self-hate, and to top it all off nobody ever bothered to look his way. If you mix that all together, you get an anti-social depressive teenager who only tries to fit in. In one point, sooner or later, we all burst from that kind of pressure. We're human after all. So how does Evan burst? By finally speaking his mind after keeping to himself for many years. And also by seeking the one true thing he always wanted: a family. I'm not justifying every single action he did, but I'm only putting some facts out there so you can also understand his side of the story. I think Heidi should give Evan some credit, since he's not really doing anything wrong by just staying with another family for certain days (leaving the whole Connor thing aside) Sure, he did a lot of bad things, I agree. But he was also suffering for a really long time.
I'm glad someone brought this up, it kind of feels like the point of the whole play is missed when Evan gets so thoroughly condemned as a bad person who did everything wrong by so many people We're supposed to be able to come away from this musical understanding how such a messy situation arose from non-malicious efforts. There IS no "bad guy" in this story, just bad choices made by flawed and damaged and burdened people. Not to mention if there was ever an age group known for not seeing how bad an idea is until they're too deep down the rabbit hole, it's high schoolers
Honestly, Evan was right. It wasn't his fault other people could provide for him better than his mom. No matter what the circumstances, if a situation is bad for you, you are allowed to leave it. It doesn't matter how hard they were trying. It wasn't good. He could still talk to her and be her son, but he doesn't have to live with her, he can move away
Phillipe young besides he tried repeatedly to tell them Connor didn’t write the letter but the Murphys pressured him into saying he did. Someone with such awful feelings of inadequacy and trying to please everybody would naturally try to do the less harm, and he thought he would do good without expecting it to blow up in his face. He fucked up big time but he didn’t do it with a malicious intent.

In like chapter two he says he doesnt want people of the same social status signing his cast. Like it adds characterization, but more negative than positive at least in the beginning

That fight in the beginning is so painfully accurate to how it feels when you fight with your parents. Especially if you have anxiety and depression. The super fast talking, the saying things you regret later, the bitter feeling that's left, and the anger when your parents are trying to "fix" you. It sucks in retrospect. This musical is so accurate. Also, side note: I heard on another post with this song that this is all in Evan's head? At least the singing parts, because Heidi wouldn't sing what she sings knowing it would give him a panic attack. The spoken parts are probably real though. The singing is just anxiety kicking the fights into overdrive.

Okay, I'm late as heck, but I just wanna point this out: Guys, the curtains are there because it's all an *act* Evan is telling one big lie to the public, but when he is questioned behind the scenes (Alana seeing the flaws in the emails and Jared threatening to reveal the truth), everything starts falling apart. He knows what he is doing is wrong, but he still believes there is no going back, so he continues to act in this new role he has written for himself. Heidi and Alana saying *"I'll just sit back while you run the show"* only amplifies that this friendship with Connor isn't real. But then again, maybe I'm just over analyzing this. Either way, this is a beautiful and emotional animatic! I can only imagine the effort put into this! Major kudos to you!

He started out thinking he was giving the murphys closure, but it went downhill, and he started cracking under the pressure of upholding this lie that he thought was doing people good. When people with anxiety and depression are backed into a corner like that, it can make them self destruct. In other words, he was starting to become like connor mentally. You obviously haven't watched the musical because if you did, you wouldn't just simply say that Evan "became an asshole".

I understand that he was under pressure, anxiety and depression... can demolish any man, let alone a child. But instead of that, he decided to lash out at everybody, even his own mother. So he made stupid decisions, so he lied, so he basically covered up another's mental state. It was on him for letting it all pile up. It was on him for refusing to open up about it. It was on Evan that, instead of trying to explain, he lashed out to and lost those he held dear, even though he was trying to keep them happy.

My favorite part is the “Stop it! stop it! Just let me go!” It shows that Evan didn’t want all of this to happen but he got dragged into this because of the Murphy’s mistake that Connor wrote the letter that Evan actually wrote to himself. Evan didn’t want to let the Murphy’s down, so he did all he could to keep them happy and he tried his best, even though he was lying.

I love this song it really shows how much Jared relies on Evan to be his friend, and how he uses his snarky comments as a defensive way to hide his emotions. It really shows he's not just a jerk and he knows what it's like to feel like nobody cares, and how he though he and Evan were friends. Jared is the best character. You. Can't. Change. My. Mind.
Hearing the song with the dialogue puts things in a whole new perspective. When I first heard it I felt like everyone else was being jealous and now knowing how badly Evan hurt them and lied just, wow.
As someone with anxiety who once set up a string of useless lies to keep a guy I dated for a good while... shit I felt the suffocation and the pressure and just the crushing. ive watched this so many times and it just hits me so hard everytime, and the art is just so good. v creative, how the transition frm evan's mom to the speaking parts is a curtain closing. it really sells how evan is taken off guard by alana's questions because she suddenly barges behind the curtain. also the way connor waves goodbye shows how evan thought of how connor has 'abandoned' him, when in previous scenes he was supporting him. evan's mind takes a form in connor's shape, i guess. i cannot stress how amazing this is, btw

Okokok, so many people have pointed out the lights in their eyes and I just love how everyone's is different. Heidi's leaves so quick, it's almost scary. Alana's slowly fades as she realizes that Evan has changed for the worst. Jared's flickers as he tries not to lose control of himself and fails. Heidi regains hers as Evan tries to apologise, a little bit of hope left that it is still the son she knows and loves so much. It's all in the details and I love it.

around 3:21 when Alana says she can understand what it feels like to feel alone/invisible/etc like Connor, I felt really bad for her and Evan both because for one after Evan finally spoke his mind about what he thinks she was doing (trying to look better for college/whatever) he gets told that she relates to not only Connor, but secretly to Evan because he always feels like that, like he's completely alone. but of course he can't say that now because of the situation he got himself into.

I can’t believe this song was cut from the movie. I’d never seen the play, so the movie was my first exposure, and I was slack-jawed at how awful Evan seemed, while still seeming to be passed off as a sympathetic protagonist who was just flawed and misguided. But this song feels so necessary. It actually shows the creators were aware how awful his actions were, and he just needed called out on them. I’m so perplexed how this wasn’t included.
I was wondering how many people came back to this animatic after the movie. I found their argument so dry and lacking of emotions. And just remembered this animatic with the argument dialogue in the beginning that absolutely breaks my heart everytime. This song was absolutely necessary to show Evan the error of his ways and have to confront the problems he had created head on. I was lucky enough to see the play in person and I find it is MUCH better than the movie (tho i like the addition of Evan confessing to his mistakes online and getting to know more about Connor himself as more redemption than just skipping to the orchard epilogue). I hope you're able to watch it in person or find a slime tutorial to really experience the show.

Connor treats Evan, but starts softening up. He writes his name on Evan's cast.
Connor kills himself later, after he had stolen a letter Evan had to write to himself. Connor's parents finds the letter that says "Dear Evan Hansen" and "Sincerely me".
Then, Evan can't help but start lying about his friendship with Connor. Just watch it. It's so goooooood!!

I see a lot of people bashing on Evan for being so inconsiderate to everyone in the course of the play, but I'd like to point out something: this boy thought he was a burden to his mother.
From the very beginning when his father left them it's very likely that he would start letting his imagination go wild and think it was his fault that his parents got separated. From the perspective of someone with an anxiety disorder, he would of probably tried to cause as minimal trouble as possible for his mother, and fail miserably because of his own illness.
Anxiety and depressive disorders are very much real. Despite how popular they've become throught the years, there's still people out there who think it's just "in your head" or to "think positive", and even though it's partly true, there are times when you just can't control how you feel. You have a chemical imbalance that needs to be dealt with, and that doesn't make you weird or different.
But most of us see it is as a burden, just like Evan. This boy was trying for years to get better, not just for his mother's sake but also his. He had feelings of guilt, inadequacy, self-hate, and to top it all off nobody ever bothered to look his way. If you mix that all together, you get an anti-social depressive teenager who only tries to fit in.
In one point, sooner or later, we all burst from that kind of pressure. We're human after all. So how does Evan burst? By finally speaking his mind after keeping to himself for many years. And also by seeking the one true thing he always wanted: a family.
I'm not justifying every single action he did, but I'm only putting some facts out there so you can also understand his side of the story.
I think Heidi should give Evan some credit, since he's not really doing anything wrong by just staying with another family for certain days (leaving the whole Connor thing aside)
Sure, he did a lot of bad things, I agree. But he was also suffering for a really long time.
I'm glad someone brought this up, it kind of feels like the point of the whole play is missed when Evan gets so thoroughly condemned as a bad person who did everything wrong by so many people
We're supposed to be able to come away from this musical understanding how such a messy situation arose from non-malicious efforts. There IS no "bad guy" in this story, just bad choices made by flawed and damaged and burdened people. Not to mention if there was ever an age group known for not seeing how bad an idea is until they're too deep down the rabbit hole, it's high schoolers
Honestly, Evan was right. It wasn't his fault other people could provide for him better than his mom. No matter what the circumstances, if a situation is bad for you, you are allowed to leave it. It doesn't matter how hard they were trying. It wasn't good. He could still talk to her and be her son, but he doesn't have to live with her, he can move away

Phillipe young besides he tried repeatedly to tell them Connor didn’t write the letter but the Murphys pressured him into saying he did. Someone with such awful feelings of inadequacy and trying to please everybody would naturally try to do the less harm, and he thought he would do good without expecting it to blow up in his face. He fucked up big time but he didn’t do it with a malicious intent.

In like chapter two he says he doesnt want people of the same social status signing his cast. Like it adds characterization, but more negative than positive at least in the beginning

That fight in the beginning is so painfully accurate to how it feels when you fight with your parents. Especially if you have anxiety and depression. The super fast talking, the saying things you regret later, the bitter feeling that's left, and the anger when your parents are trying to "fix" you. It sucks in retrospect. This musical is so accurate.
Also, side note: I heard on another post with this song that this is all in Evan's head? At least the singing parts, because Heidi wouldn't sing what she sings knowing it would give him a panic attack. The spoken parts are probably real though. The singing is just anxiety kicking the fights into overdrive.

Guys, the curtains are there because it's all an *act*
Evan is telling one big lie to the public, but when he is questioned behind the scenes (Alana seeing the flaws in the emails and Jared threatening to reveal the truth), everything starts falling apart. He knows what he is doing is wrong, but he still believes there is no going back, so he continues to act in this new role he has written for himself. Heidi and Alana saying *"I'll just sit back while you run the show"* only amplifies that this friendship with Connor isn't real.
But then again, maybe I'm just over analyzing this. Either way, this is a beautiful and emotional animatic! I can only imagine the effort put into this! Major kudos to you!

He started out thinking he was giving the murphys closure, but it went downhill, and he started cracking under the pressure of upholding this lie that he thought was doing people good. When people with anxiety and depression are backed into a corner like that, it can make them self destruct. In other words, he was starting to become like connor mentally.
You obviously haven't watched the musical because if you did, you wouldn't just simply say that Evan "became an asshole".
let's be honest, it was an emotional rollercoaster that went straight downhill from beginning to end

I understand that he was under pressure, anxiety and depression... can demolish any man, let alone a child. But instead of that, he decided to lash out at everybody, even his own mother. So he made stupid decisions, so he lied, so he basically covered up another's mental state. It was on him for letting it all pile up. It was on him for refusing to open up about it. It was on Evan that, instead of trying to explain, he lashed out to and lost those he held dear, even though he was trying to keep them happy.

Jareds voice hurt me
My favorite part is the “Stop it! stop it! Just let me go!”
It shows that Evan didn’t want all of this to happen but he got dragged into this because of the Murphy’s mistake that Connor wrote the letter that Evan actually wrote to himself. Evan didn’t want to let the Murphy’s down, so he did all he could to keep them happy and he tried his best, even though he was lying.

I love this song it really shows how much Jared relies on Evan to be his friend, and how he uses his snarky comments as a defensive way to hide his emotions. It really shows he's not just a jerk and he knows what it's like to feel like nobody cares, and how he though he and Evan were friends. Jared is the best character. You. Can't. Change. My. Mind.
As someone who became fond of Jared, I can attest to this.
Hearing the song with the dialogue puts things in a whole new perspective. When I first heard it I felt like everyone else was being jealous and now knowing how badly Evan hurt them and lied just, wow.

ive watched this so many times and it just hits me so hard everytime, and the art is just so good. v creative, how the transition frm evan's mom to the speaking parts is a curtain closing. it really sells how evan is taken off guard by alana's questions because she suddenly barges behind the curtain. also the way connor waves goodbye shows how evan thought of how connor has 'abandoned' him, when in previous scenes he was supporting him. evan's mind takes a form in connor's shape, i guess.

Okokok, so many people have pointed out the lights in their eyes and I just love how everyone's is different.
Heidi's leaves so quick, it's almost scary. Alana's slowly fades as she realizes that Evan has changed for the worst. Jared's flickers as he tries not to lose control of himself and fails. Heidi regains hers as Evan tries to apologise, a little bit of hope left that it is still the son she knows and loves so much. It's all in the details and I love it.

Omg you brought tears to my eyes....all Evan wanted was someone to understand but instead of telling the people he cared about he just kept it inside and was mean to them....

around 3:21 when Alana says she can understand what it feels like to feel alone/invisible/etc like Connor, I felt really bad for her and Evan both because for one after Evan finally spoke his mind about what he thinks she was doing (trying to look better for college/whatever) he gets told that she relates to not only Connor, but secretly to Evan because he always feels like that, like he's completely alone. but of course he can't say that now because of the situation he got himself into.
This is just beautiful. You did an amazing job. This strikes me personally, and I have to say I am touched.
Can I just say how much detail this animatic actually has?!? You can see how the sparkle goes out slowly from Heidi, Alana and Jared’s eyes. I couldn’t stop crying the first time I saw this!
I can’t believe this song was cut from the movie. I’d never seen the play, so the movie was my first exposure, and I was slack-jawed at how awful Evan seemed, while still seeming to be passed off as a sympathetic protagonist who was just flawed and misguided.
But this song feels so necessary. It actually shows the creators were aware how awful his actions were, and he just needed called out on them.
I’m so perplexed how this wasn’t included.
I was wondering how many people came back to this animatic after the movie. I found their argument so dry and lacking of emotions. And just remembered this animatic with the argument dialogue in the beginning that absolutely breaks my heart everytime. This song was absolutely necessary to show Evan the error of his ways and have to confront the problems he had created head on. I was lucky enough to see the play in person and I find it is MUCH better than the movie (tho i like the addition of Evan confessing to his mistakes online and getting to know more about Connor himself as more redemption than just skipping to the orchard epilogue). I hope you're able to watch it in person or find a slime tutorial to really experience the show.
