    Hi! I recommend sealing all seams, because as you wear it, the raindrops flow down as their weight pulls them. They will get collected on the lowest part (like the bottom of the sleeve and the armpits) and chill there until the weight gets too great and they drop down, but before that, they have more than enough time to seep into the little holes the needle made, and the thread is also a great item to transfer the water because of the capillary effect (the water will use the threads as highways and because the seams are connected, even the seams covered with the tape can get wet). It wouldn't be a big problem if you could just see and add more tape if needed, but as you will have lining, you will have to rip it out in order to change anything. I think it's better to be sure cause if the seeping problem occurs you will have much harder time fixing it than just sealing all seams before sewing in the lining. Good luck with this project, hope it turns out well, it looks great 😊

      I agree, better to be safe than sorry, I would seal all the seams.

    So I think part of the reason you are instructed to open the seam and press the waterproofing over the open seam is so that there is zero gap. It could be possible that any gap left where the seam is folded over to one side may let too much moisture in and break the seal of the waterproofing. Just a thought. The coat is stunning.

      Yes, this would be my concern. It's such a beautiful coat, it would be so sad if the seal failed.

    OMG, this is the most gorgeous raincoat I have ever seen! I would like to recommend washing the entire coat in water repellent as this will keep the rain from soaking through the fabric in a down pour. Here are some brands that I found: Wash In Water Repellents - Scotchguard Heavy Duty Water Shield, Kiwi Camp Dry Heavy Duty, Gear Aid Wash In Water Repellent, and NikWax Softshell Wash In and Waterproofing Duo Pack. Hope this helps.

  • @therian_forever12

    I really think you should use a cotton for the lining. If you use a waterproof type fabric you will sweat and that will feel wet. Cotton will absorb sweat and make you feel dry.

  • @therian_forever12
    @therian_forever12 11 месяцев назад +9

    Sometimes with waterproof jackets i think they have let water in but it's actually sweat not being able to evaporate. PLEASE use cotton for the lining. It will feel so much nicer and absorb sweat.

      Wool would be better. It's the only fibre that is still insulating when wet.

    If you’re not sure about waterproofing the last few seams you could always do a shower test (exactly what it sounds like). I’m not sure about the armpit area but I think from the elbow down might be worth doing just because when you’re out you’ll be exposing those seams the most when you move your arms around. I’ve been wanting to make my own rain coat for awhile so I’m excited to hear what you think about the sealant tape! All the patience you have when sewing really shows in the final pieces ❤️ Side note: what kind of needle are you using?

    • @Loepsie
      @Loepsie  11 месяцев назад +3

      Just a regular 80 needle! The fabric is pretty thick so I didn't want to use too thin of a needle, but not an unneccessarily thick one either of course

    Love whqt you have done so far! I highly recommend finishing all seams with the tape (possibky even the lining) as you dont want to get a few wears into it and find out that it is leaking after all this effoet and have to go back to repair it. Also please do a facing for this in the raincoat material! Not sure if you were planning to or if you have enough fabric but the center front definitely will get water in one way or another and this can soak into the lining which will defeat thw object. It might be too late in which case its ok, just somethjng to consider if you do it again. Love your channel ❤

    I have a small iron board for ironing sleeves. I have also seen very long and narrow taylor's hams. May one of these things is a solution for sealing the sleeve seams. (the small iron board is also really helpful for ironing the sleeves of blouses and dress shirts!)

    To do it right, or to avoid that trauma? Tempting as it yet is, I have found that the trauma of cold rain dripping down my arms is not worth it.

    The jeans seam you're thinking of is called "flat-felled" and they're lovely, but they do take a bit more time and material. I think you were wise to do it the way you did. Can't wait to see the finished product!

    Thank you for doing this. I would love to make a raincoat but the tutorials I have seen didn’t answer things like sealing seams. Especially, if they were sewing plastic and making holes in the plastic. I would prefer a fabric one that can be scotch guarded if laundered.

      First, buy a sewing machine suitable for beginners and a few basic sewing tools (scissors, pins, chalk, ruler, etc)
      Practice sewing until you learn to make straight stitches. Then buy a few easy to sew patterns and some fabric (cotton , linen or something that’s not stretch or slippery). Try to sew a garment. If you don’t know how something is done, there’s plenty of info on youtube. The most important thing, don’t discourage if something does not come out perfect or great. This is a skill and it takes time to learn. The feeling of wearing a self made garment is amazing! You can do it!

      I'd say getting away from fast fashion starts with getting away from the fast fashion mindset. WHY do you need NEW clothes so often? What is the reason for needing a piece of clothing? What is wrong with what you currently own? Is there a way you can adjust the clothing you already have to suit your needs better, and if not, how to dispose of it? What do you actually need as replacement? The consumer mindset is very easy to bring aboard into personal sewing as well and then the problem isn't solved at all.

    Ik zou echt alle naden doen met die tape. Als het gewoon recht naar beneden regent dan maakt het niet uit maar als je in een hoosbui terecht komt op de fiets met veel wind.... Bij mij was een keer mijn hele kont nat en leek het alsof ik in mijn broek had geplast. Had nog een lichte broek aan ook. Kwam doordat de coating hier en daar wat los was geraakt.
