The mhhhm at 7:49 is so spiritual his mhhmmm's make me feel things, feel human, makes me feel alive, sorrow and happy. Thank you Chris Thomas King. I recently taught myself guitar just so I can play this, I play it now and I love it when I get to hymn. You made the film one of my favourites
So strange that this video came up on my feed I was just talking to a young person today about the importance of blues and jazz. I showed my kids that movie when they were little and to this day they still talk about it.
The movie aside, and I’m not being disrespectful about the movie in any way, this is one of those songs that gets you in that one spot deep down inside you. If it was never featured on the movie, it would probably somehow have made it out for people to enjoy regardless. God would want it shared.
Terrific film from a terrific team of film makers. I recall the scene where this song played and it really captured the moment and my attention. It took me away from the laughter to a very calm, reflective state. Luv'd it!
There are iconoclasts that are good, and some that just get off on lotsa iconoclastic random blasts from the hip. Chris Thomas King is an excellent iconoclast. Scholarly, street-smart, passionate about his music and devoted to the true story of his roots. He annoys me as he slowly, assertively deflates myths I'd held sacred, then, just when I'm about to write him off, the dots come together and I see a whole new reality. I'm a true fan of Folk Blues, Jug Band Blues, Country Blues, Delta and Piedmont Blues styles. And I always enjoyed the NOLA brass bands, Blues, Jass, Dixieland, and Jazz. Mr. Thomas King helped me to see that NOLA's Blues came first; Folk Blues came second. Mr. Thomas King helped me to see that what we musicians and music lovers consider the geographic Mississippi Delta has been a myth; and that the theory that Blues was born around the Tunica-Helena region is incorrect. More power to ya, sir.
Jimi made "All Along the Watchtower" his. Johnny Cash made "Hurt" his. And all the respect in the world to Skip, but you made "Hard Time" yours. Sublime, Chris. Much love.
Been a fan of Chris since 21st Century Blues, I loved the rap/blues fusion (wish I knew the story behind some of the lyrics) and anything else he does is always excellent. I was glad to see him in O Brother, seemed like he was about to get a huge dose of deserved recognition. Here's to hoping he keeps it up.
Hearing this song in the campfire scene changed my life forever, you have no idea. That lick between the verses stunned me in ways I didn't know we're possible. Thank you!!! I'm sure you don't like this, and no offense to Skip, but your version is the definitive version.
Hearing your version of HTKFB for the first time in 2000 while watching "O Brother" is what caused me to pick up my acoustic guitar again. Thanks for the inspiration brother.
If, some day, a formal historical survey is conducted re: "RUclips videos during THE COVID YEAR", ~~~ I hope this one receives props. *"Hard Times" comes in many forms.* 6 million dead (in the US alone) certainly qualifies; but in 2023 most folks just toss it down the ol' memory hole....
This is really weird but I have a shutter that looks JUST like the one to your left; I took it after a 100-something-year-old house was demolished nearby and it lives in my kitchen. Just gave me a tiny shock cause I see it every day. ANYWAY you're a legend, so keep making a cool story
What a beautiful song, thank you very much for this interpretation, please please please please , where can I find the Tab guitar and the good tuning please ! thank's from France

I don't expect an answer to this, but will ask anyway... What tuning is this song in? Just a drop D? Or is it an open tuning? I have been trying to figure it out by watching you play, but I can't make sense of it. I don't read music and play mostly by ear and visual, so any sort of guidance here would be great, from you or just anyone who knows this song in this arrangement...
I reckon DADFAD, you can hear the major 3rd (F#) when he plays the 1st fret of the 3rd string during that sweet major/minor lick that makes the song so nice
foxing skip James isn't Skip James even if its reasonably well done the fact of the matter is lost in a make believe film score sanitised history aye. lucky I heard Skip singing this song here on YT his is coming from the real memory of having gone through the all of it, the very worse. and he knowing more by talking to and knowing older people who lived and their memorys of the hard past of the 19th century that old hard times hung around well into the 20th. hard times will they never go.. ??? sung to a low tuned guitar on some German tv blue's greats program in monochrome b+w perfectly recorded a historic document of Skip James's voice and guitar technique. but they also caught a something else a ghost a spirit in the man, hard times will they ever go something the film and this version mock like a false apology for that bad history a history to shocking to real.. I wonder if there will be songs and singers for the Gaza and Palestine but thats for the future rama lama ding dong and some poem or rhyme. hate out lives a life time or many life times...as someone hinted or will hint the past ain't never dead
The most meaningful moment of the film when you played that song.
Those guy sitting around the fire and this song, chills. Haunting and amazing

O Brother is my favorite film and my favorite part of the entire film was your music, sir.
No disrespect to Skip but your version of this song is undefeated! So happy to have found your channel, would love to catch you live one day!
Agreed. The little slide up riff is classic in Chris’s version.
Skip would have loved his version for sure.
Skip’s voice is intoxicating tho..

You know times are hard when a blues man writes a line like "and I ain't gonna sing it no more". This is my favorite version of this tune by far.
So strange that this video came up on my feed I was just talking to a young person today about the importance of blues and jazz. I showed my kids that movie when they were little and to this day they still talk about it.
"You ain't no man, without the land!"
An amazing and powerful song. 20 years later still gives me chills! Love it!
One of my favorite tracks from the movie! Very soulful, my brother! Sik
Thank you sir. Just beautiful.

CTK one of the very few people that singing and playing can stand up next to the original
I could just sit around a fire and listen to this all night
Love ya Brother. Keep going
✌For sure!
@@ChrisThomasKingTV OMG! I can't believe you just responded! I can't wait to tell my Family!!!
Brother I can’t begin to tell you how much I luv this song it’s brilliant!
Hearing this gives me chills! I was watching the movie had to stop just so I could hear it again.

Your arrangement of this is brilliant. When the pandemic’s over, I’ll be looking for your live shows. Your albums are already great :)
This has touched me beyond words, since I watched O Brother Where Art Thou when I was 8 years old. Just amazing. Thank you
Utterly hypnotizing-you tow the line perfectly of respecting skips version and making it your own --mastery at its finest

Thank you. Subscribed. So much for Robert Johnson. I have a lot to learn. Mississippi John Hurt. I need a calendar.
This man I love and his music he really is one of the best. Gives me chills every time I hear him.
Since hearing it in oh brother .. I’ve loved it eve since and I listen to it at least once a week 🙏

All the Kings are incredible eh!

Love you man. Did live audio once for you in Arlington VA in the early 2000s and you were fantastic and great to work with. Keep being you.
So much nostalgia with this song. Thanks for sharing this, I hope you're doing well.
Watched the movie for the very first time last night....the campfire scene with you performing this song was special.

C.T. King. I'll take me a lil' Red Mud any day.

Sheer brilliance.
The blues runs through your veins. Thank you for your art

What a beautiful song, thank you very much for this interpretation,

Tuning is DADFAD. It’s like Open D, but you tune the G string down another half step.

Do you have the guitar from the movie?
Into 2023 mid March now a very large bank in California collapsed today as we sit on the edge of societal collapse. Someone remember this.

Campfire blues….
Is this in DADGAD tuning?
The tabs I learnt was pretty much open D minor tuning. So just the G down to F
I reckon DADFAD, you can hear the major 3rd (F#) when he plays the 1st fret of the 3rd string during that sweet major/minor lick that makes the song so nice
