Thanks for the video. Now that Varroa has arrived in Australia we are starting our journey of treatments. I have just added Randy Oliver's OA extended release pads and a diffuser to mist oregano oil into the brood chamber. Fingers crossed.
I think you’re off to a great start. I can definitely appreciate your openness to trying things to keep your bees thriving. Keep it up!! Thanks for sharing!
Thank you so much Doctor. Ì used to mix the eucalyptus, wormwood and pepermint oils and it gives a good result. I've used tongue depressor filled with the oils and put them in the hive in the bottom of every frame.
I mixed the same essential oils in a spray bottle & sprayed the bees every time I opened a hive(about 300 hives) 4 years ago, with good success. I've been using a different treatment, but going back to essential oils.
Hello hive doctor,,, I am from Quebec Canada, to be more exact in Sherbrooke,,, just ordered on Amazon the exact same products you have…. I have a question… it says on the label (for external use only)??? Is that OK for the bees??? Keep up the good work. Thank you PG.
Great question and I understand where you’re coming from. I wondered the same thing, knowing that the instructions are intended for human use but thinking about my bees. Two things come to mind: 1) It says that in part to dummy-proof people from ingesting it and 2) I have mot observed any detrimental or harmful effects since administering it. So to you I say proceed with caution in small doses, making logical observations as you do so. I’ve done this before about a year ago with no issues but with a more compact and smaller cotton pad.
None that I’ve seen or experienced. However I have noticed the bees shying away from the pads. So they’re probably too strong or I am doing it at the wrong time of year (it’s beginning to dip into the 30’s and 40’s at night).

A mister should be used not a sprayer. Thymol does work and you can make it at home from thyme, monarda fistulosa (wild bergamot or bee balm) and monarda didyma (crimson beebalm, scarlet beebalm, scarlet monarda, Eau-de-Cologne plant, Oswego tea, or bergamot,). Solvent-free microwave extraction (SFME) takes 30 minutes, SFME yields similar amounts of thymol with more oxygenated compounds than 4.5 hours of hydro-distillation at atmospheric pressures without the need for solvent. I found spreading hives out helps. Less bee drift. I plant rhubarb, bee balm, and thyme around my hives. I have had bee keepers be short with me saying it's not approved. Thymol has been used to successfully control varroa mites and prevent fermentation and the growth of mold in bee colonies. Thymol is also used as a rapidly degrading, non-persisting pesticide. In 2009, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) reviewed the research literature on the toxicology and environmental impact of thymol and concluded that "thymol has minimal potential toxicity and poses minimal risk".
Yes they are, good eye! I put those in my honey supers so that the foragers have direct access to the supers rather than congesting the brood box. They also act as upper ventilation in winter.
You stated cotton cloth are not suitable for this process some bee keeper use white Swedish cloth they break down blue ones and colour cloths could have die chemicals within them
I like this idea of helping to control mites. Thank you Sir
This is a very interesting experiment. Thanks for sharing the experience with your viewers. I am anxious for Part 2.
Thanks! I’m working on part 2 tomorrow 🐝
Really a great video. And also your things on the sideway that got me the best bee gloves with a 10# discount! Much appreciated and I have SUBSCRIBED…
Awesome!! Thanks for letting me know that!🐝🐝

Can I do oxalic acid vaporizer treatment while using this?
Love the honest approach.
Randy said cellulose blocks saturated in thimol.
Can you elaborate about cellulose blocking saturated what in thymol?
@Thecrobeeman I don't think that's correct. Check his website again. Pretty sure he's focused on Oxalic acid pads
He did both. He has lots of test on video.@@thehivedoctor13

Oh that’s an interesting application method. Nice! I have used wormwood too. It’s dried and formed into compressed pucks.

That’s good to know! I was thinking it was a treatment for each time a colony was opened up.
@hive doctor where is the part 2?
I have a lavender farm and alot of honey bees. We extract our own lavender oil and wonder if i can use this instead and how effective.

Does the application of essential oil in the active bee hives have any side effects for adult bees and brood population?
None that I’ve seen or experienced. However I have noticed the bees shying away from the pads. So they’re probably too strong or I am doing it at the wrong time of year (it’s beginning to dip into the 30’s and 40’s at night).
@@thehivedoctor13 thanks for your reply hivedoctor.
The honeyshow judge in training who showed you that method. How often does he apply the essential oils? At what timing?
Great question but he didn’t mention frequency of application. That’s something I hope to cover in part two if I remember to😅🐝
What time of year do you apply this? anytime? fall or spring?
Any time of the year when they don’t have to cluster in cold weather. I think the fumes would disrupt their cluster but warmer weather is ideal.
Also most bee baits or lures have thymol in them.
@ChiChi-r4o How old are you? This isn’t a children’s video.
Only problem is that it cannot be used with honey supers otherwise it might alter the taste of honeg 😢
It’s definitely meant for the brood boxes, not the honey supers. However I have already determined that this method is not practical.
Whew can I order the gloves like you use.

I was waiting on lemongrass oil, which attracts ALL bees, hornets, and wasps. Tea tree oi is enough attractant.

That’s some good information, thank you! I especially appreciate the distinction between a sprayer and a mister.
Bananas! Where's the evidence? Regulated and Approved treatment?
I know a beekeeper who’s fed hundreds of bananas! He swears by them.
@@thehivedoctor13 What does that evidence - only more monkey business?
Are those additional entrances in your honey supers? Explain please
Yes they are, good eye! I put those in my honey supers so that the foragers have direct access to the supers rather than congesting the brood box. They also act as upper ventilation in winter.

Look up Ken Davis video on essential oil treatments. I'm using his beetle grease recipe with good results.
Cool cool, thank you!😎
Less talk more action. You can explain as you are doing.
I think it's too much. 2 drops every 3 days, more like it. Lets see how it goes for you.
After this experiment I agree, too much. Nice call!
Bees have not become resistant to Oxalic Acid either.
Agreed and I really like that.
