  • How we use Apigaurd as a varroa mite treatment and how we check for mites using a Varroa EasyCheck alcohol wash.
    Please note that although in this video we show the EasyCheck being shaken, it is more effective to swirl the container so mites will settle to the bottom, which is what we normally do.

    This stuff IS the Platinum bullet to Mite drops. Pull the last of honey for the season, I do early 7 am yard treatments, it is difficult to time. Because it ruins the honey and you don't dare pull it afterward for a long time! Especially timing it before the temp changes in September. I wear a Tyvex suit , Moldex FULL FACE with a P100 and NIOSH rated Organic vapors cartridge or you will end up with long term lung damage from this stuff in the future. Ask me. I know. We try to keep it in an Ice chest and Cool helps slow down that vapor "flash off". from the gel.

Is this relates to amount of resources? Thank you again Bob

    • @bobbinnie9872
      @bobbinnie9872  2 года назад +1

      In our area 6 frames of healthy bees will get through the winter just fine and will use a lot less resources to do it. The type of bee does make a difference though. Carniolan and Caucasian bees tend to be more winter hardy than Italians. It has to do with where those races evolved.

    • @thedeafcattledog8608
      @thedeafcattledog8608 11 месяцев назад

      Research shows that the shaking kills the bees after a couple of days. Also, if you buy the powdered sugar from the store instead of making your own, it will likely have corn starch in it and that will kill the bees too. If you can do it without shaking the bees with homemade powdered sugar, it should work to see if you have mites or not. There’s also CO2, but again- don’t shake the bees hard!

      At the time of this video we knew that the queens weren't laying much because of the treatment and that a fall pollen flow was going to start within a week or two so we opted not to feed pollen supplement. The most common time for us to use supplement is in late winter or in mid summer during a drought year.

    Hey Bob. So if this Apiguard can shut queen laying down, this should not be used early spring-correct? Can this treatment effect wax and or brood? I’m thinking of trying it. It’s best for treating after spring flow and late fall-correct?

    • @bobbinnie9872
      @bobbinnie9872  Год назад

      I've used Apiguard in the spring and found it useful. It can slow the queen down some but not as bad as it does in warm, late summer weather. Thymol does get absorbed by beeswax in a big way but it dissipates rapidly so I don't consider it an issue.

  • @christophersublett1037
    @christophersublett1037 2 года назад +1

    Hey Bob I hope all is well. I'm in central AR and pulled honey on the 4th and did an alcohol wash and had averaged 8 to 12 mites per 300 on my colonies which is way above where I need to be. I used Apivar prior to this and I don't think it did the trick. We are having a bad heat wave here with high humidity; temperatures consistently 95 to 100 with no end in site. My main question is I really want to use Apiguard, but boy I'm afraid even a 1/2 dose might be too much with this heat (Running double deeps with brood super put on after honey extraction). With that being said I feel like I really need to treat with these current mite numbers, so I'm thinking of Oxalic acid now and then Oxalic acid again in the broodless period end of Nov 1st part of Dec. Also not much here in the way of end of summer flow or fall flow we get a mild amount of goldenrod but it's nothing to write home about. I would greatly value your opinion on my current situation. Thank you for all of the videos and all of the advice it is greatly appreciated!

    • @bobbinnie9872
      @bobbinnie9872  2 года назад +2

      Hi Christopher. It looks like some sort of treatment is needed before things get way out of hand. The oxalic vaporization will work right now but treatments would need to be close together and numerous. The current thinking is 3 or 4 days apart, at least 7 times. When broodless in winter only twice is needed. Good luck.

      All of the Apiguard I know of in this country is in a gel form. There are recipes for making your own but I purchase the name brand Apiguard. Oxalic is gaining popularity here also and we use it in the winter when the colonies are broodless. Different colonies and different years have a different feed regimen. Some get almost none and some may get 10 buckets of sucrose sugar syrup. It depends on many factors.

    Follow up question Bob. Need your help.
    Six days ago, on a 55 degree day, I gave an OAV treatment because I was seeing a few mites on my bottom pest tray.
    Two days after treatment I counted 249 dead adult mites. Following day I counted 159 adults mites. Following day there were 137-mix of adults and white infants. . Today, which is six days after treatment, I counted 97; a lot of which were smaller and white infant mites.
    Are these numbers alarming? Would you do another treatment in a couple weeks, or could these numbers be fall offs from VSH cleaning?

      Although my past experience with formic acid has been negative I know of several large beekeepers that feel it's their best choice.
