Bravo.... long live the artisans and crafters of old... beautiful recaning and refurbishing a chair that might have been otherwise burnt or thrown out. Lets make artisans great again.
I found you through this challenge. I’m very impressed by this restoration, especially considering that you made your own tools to replace the webbing. The finished project is breathtaking.
Let us be honest, this was a competition for 2nd place. AT Restoration cannot be challenged. But your work is also very nice, I could not come nowhere close. Nice chair and you can be proud of yourself.

Beautiful chair and a great restoration job. That little acrylic paddle was a touch of genius. I have a coffee table that needs the rattan replacing and I might just have to make one of those paddles for the job. Thanks for this. The challenge has been fantastic. All 3 of you did brilliantly.
Interesting - this is the third way to replace rattan - all depends on what the furniture looks like when you remove the old rattan Beautiful result 👋 I love rattan ❣

Défi réussi sur le cannage de l’assise. Et surtout dans la tradition de ce travail particulier… mais pas trop de complication pour le reste… Je regarde la suite du défi avec vos confrères… Bonjour de France !
Many years ago, my siblings and I used to watch our German grandparents restore this type of chair. The biggest difference is, way back then, you couldn't buy the rattan cloth already woven and ready to cut. They had to weave the seats and backs as they worked. I do wish they'd had access to the things being used in this video.
Surely before, they had a lot of extra hard work. Now everything is automated, everything must be done quickly etc etc. Maybe it was better before. If you liked the video. Leave a Like for the challenge. Thank you🤩
My grandfather taught me to cane 50 years ago. There are two types of woven cane. The sheet cane you see in this video and woven cane that weaves through holes inside the perimeter of the seat. A true caner will never add holes to make a woven seat and will never cut a groove to put in sheet cane when the woven version was original. This restorer did a pretty good job, but a really experienced caner can measure that sheet cane so that when it is installed, there is no need to trim after the spline (the wooden perimeter piece(s) are applied. When the sheet cane is trimmed after the spline, the little strands of the sheet cane show through on the top next to that spline. When you are truly experienced, you will never have those bits exposed as the piece of sheet cane has been cut to perfection and the ends are secure and hidden under the spline.
@@IlMakerstauratore in my place we are still do it manually since lot of costumer wanted more durabilty, it was a lot of work, just finish one section like you did, it took a whole day to finish webbing it (the pro can finish 4 or more of that in a day).
In Brazil (my country) it's made this way. Must be an extremelly skilled artisan to make it, putting each stripe, weaven it in the correct way. The artisans to do it are very well paid for it and this kind of chair would cost a lot here.
Am interessantesten fand ich, wie du das fertige Wiener Geflecht fixiert hast. Ich kenne nur Videos, wo das sonst komplett mit einzelnen Fasern neu gewebt wird. Das werde ich auf jeden Fall auch ausprobieren.
