I will check out other contestants then Ill be back and Im back ....so ...I Adore the "Classy" chair that you chose and you did an EXCELLENT job on it ... I wouldve liked to se a second lite coat on the seat to more evenly match the top panel ..but a very small thing compare to the rest of it..so ..I was torn between AT and you ..He WINS .... only because his workspace is CLEAN and ORGANIZED,,, lol....Congrats tho on an excellent job ..it was fun competition...😘

Many years ago, my siblings and I used to watch our German grandparents restore this type of chair. The biggest difference is, way back then, you couldn't buy the rattan cloth already woven and ready to cut. They had to weave the seats and backs as they worked. I do wish they'd had access to the things being used in this video.

    • @IlMakerstauratore
      @IlMakerstauratore  Год назад +4

Surely before, they had a lot of extra hard work. Now everything is automated, everything must be done quickly etc etc. Maybe it was better before.

My grandfather taught me to cane 50 years ago. There are two types of woven cane. The sheet cane you see in this video and woven cane that weaves through holes inside the perimeter of the seat. A true caner will never add holes to make a woven seat and will never cut a groove to put in sheet cane when the woven version was original. This restorer did a pretty good job, but a really experienced caner can measure that sheet cane so that when it is installed, there is no need to trim after the spline (the wooden perimeter piece(s) are applied. When the sheet cane is trimmed after the spline, the little strands of the sheet cane show through on the top next to that spline. When you are truly experienced, you will never have those bits exposed as the piece of sheet cane has been cut to perfection and the ends are secure and hidden under the spline.

As I watched this video, I kept wondering if it would be less painful to re-cane a chair as you did, or go to Singapore and be caned myself. You did a wonderful job BTW.
