What Liberals Get RIGHT About Homeschooling | Ep. 236

  • The Washington Post did an article on homeschooling last week. Even with as pro-homeschooling we are, they got some things right as far as some concerns to look out for when it comes to homeschooling your children. Today, we are going to discuss those concerns.
    We are going to start off by saying that we don’t think public school should be an option for Christian parents. Our children should not be sitting in a godless environment all day long. If we send them to a godless society, we can't be surprised if they come back godless. We are really seeing that with our young people in the church. Regardless of whether that is homeschooling or sending them to a private Christian education, they need to be educated from a Christian worldview. That is the most important thing.
    It’s fun to see how homeschooling has gotten picked up by the mainstream media because it’s such a thing now. The stats in this Washington Post article were saying that homeschooling has gone up by 51% over the past six school years. This is something that all of a sudden people are caring about a lot more.
    Each home needs to take very seriously the education of our children because these are going to be the adults that are leading our society in a very short amount of time. We don’t know when the Lord is going to come back. We don’t know what God has in store for the next generations. We have to parent with a multi-generational mindset. We can do so much as believers if we have bigger goals for our children, regarding how they can be used by God in our society.

    It is an insidious attitude to get into as a homeschool parent: “oh as long as they can read and write.” We should be schooling for excellence! Thank you. I needed to evaluate my attitude. I really struggle with focus and consistency as a person, and that bleeds into my homeschool. On top of that, I keep having kids LOL so there is ALWAYS some “distraction” in the form of noise or children needing something. I need to push through and work on priorities!

    I really appreciate your point in raising children with a multi-generational mindset. I was homeschooled, and my mother said when she was educating me, she was educating her grandchildren. I received an excellent education due to her diligence in that mindset. She also had us go on to get a GED so we would have a more official diploma should we need to go out in the workforce and/or pursue further education. I married young and have always been a stay at home wife and mother, so as of yet have not needed the official credentials, but who is to say what the future will hold. My thorough education has helped give me confidence that I can do the same for my children. Not that I never have concerns about my ability, but I tell myself that if my mom was able to do it, I can too. One of my sisters has never married and has a career, so it has also served her well. You never know what your children's future will hold, but a thorough education is a good starting point for whatever life has in store.

I see all the cutest crafts and parties that others do and think my kids are missing out and then I realize we do one art project per week and even have history projects we do once a month so we do have some fun 😂😂 I know I can be hard on myself, but I appreciate you calling homeschool moms to a higher standard and not just do the bare minimum which I hear a lot!!

    I can’t remember if you did a podcast on this but, did you do one on the green flags and red flags of finding godly friendships for our kids? Also when godly people are scarce, how to teach them not to just choose any friends and lower their standards just to have companionship. We only have two children 15 ( boy) and 4(girl). We’re struggling to find friends that call themselves Christian’s but don’t read their bibles or raise their children biblically.

    This is such a great episode. My wife and I love on one income so that we can make sure that my wife can stay at home. It means that we don't get to go on as many vacations, buy as many things, save as much money, BUT we will raise our child in the admonition of The Lord and ensure that they are poured into. We believe that our child is a child of God and we want to fill his cup of good grain and fill it all the way up so when he gets older and get bumped around by the world he is in he can get bumped and not loose all that good grain. He may loose some, but but will still be full.

    I think you changed the title? And I see the first title asking if we feel confident or educated enough to teach our kids at home. I always thought that was so funny, I was public schooled, and the majority of parents who don't feel confident in homeschooling, or wonder if they are smart enough, went to public school, so why would we want to send our kids to the place that made us not feel confident in educating our elementary school children? It's so ironic. I do feel confident in educating my children, I know they're learning more than most kids in public school being taught one on one. I'm actually learning so much teaching my kids too, the curriculums are really so easy to teach and understand, and when they get older, I might consider an online Christian school, and I'm confident they will be much better educated than if they were in public school. There's also the huge negative influences and social distractions of public schools that we don't have to worry about. Great conversation, thank you!

    I completely agree there needs to be a seriousness with which parents homeschool their children. And i love the fire that has be reignited with this conversation within me in schooling my own kiddos. However i do think it is really important to remember that God calls families differently. While I believe we are to school our children at home, I do know parents that have not been called to do the same.
    I would like to also add that i know we are very blessed to live in a country 🇨🇦 where i can choose how we educate our children. Not all Christian families around the world live in this reality.

    After hearing from a mom who had her kids in the public school up until recently, I don't think it's hard to do better than the public school in my area academically. Also I know our school district is making it impossible for parents to be involved, which wasn't the case when I was in school, my mom volunteered in my class a lot at the beginning of my public school education, and now parents can't ride the bus with their student to feild trips or sporting events or eat lunch at the school with their child. I agree we shouldn't not care about academics, but as I've heard another online homeschool mom say we can't all be raising prodigies, my goal is just to keep my kids moving forward and learning how to learn.

    • @MrsMugs
      @MrsMugs 7 месяцев назад

      I think yes as much as we can't all have prodigy children, we should not set them up not to become prodigy by being mediocre so that each child can reach their personal full potential prodigy or not.

    • @shelbys2750
      @shelbys2750 7 месяцев назад

      @@MrsMugs I think people put too much pressure on homeschool parents to set their children up to be prodigies instead of just creating an environment where learning is fun. I didn't say homeschool parents shouldn't allow their children to reach their full potential, however everyone's funding and local resources are going to be so different that I hesitate even to say that. Again even the public school doesn't allow children to reach their full potential a lot of times. I just think this podcast is coming from people who don't know the public school system well and it's easy to feel discouraged hearing some of these things.

    I became a super strong Christian while attending public school. If you do your job well at home, there's no reason your child cannot learn reading, writing, and math at school. It’s a naive and outdated thought that only reading and math are being taught in public school. I would argue neither of those things are taught anymore (my husband and I are both former public school teachers). Instead LGBTQ, Marxism and gender ideology are being pushed.

One of the biggest reasons I know Jesus is because Christian friends would invite me to church with them and their family. Amen! ***Jesus saves, not schooling choices.*** We cannot be our children's "savior" by isolating them, we have to trust our huge and amazing God to do that work regardless of where our children go. Homeschooling can be so wonderful but fear based homeschool is dangerous if you move down this road of thinking it can control how your child's faith ends up. My "Christian" school (people who claimed Christianity but were really there to control their child's environment or due to money) was a lot more harmful for my faith than public school where people weren't pretending to be something they were not... and I met way more authentic Christians there!

      I agree that fear based homeschooling is not right. However, knowingly sending your children into a pagan environment that is heavily pushing their agenda on your kids is unwise. Public school today is not the same as when we were kids. I'm so thankful that you met the Lord through friends at public school. We also cannot then say that because of that, our kids need to go in there and be the missionaries when they are needing to be taught and trained and discipled themselves. That's not the right mindset. We can't pretend that the public school having them for the majority of their lives during their school years is not going to affect them and change their worldview.

    I'm not very far in but I wanted to comment to say, I agree with the accountability for homeschool parents. This year I plan to become a lot more intentional and invested in the education that my children are receiving. I am a first-generation homeschooler and devout Christian; so I would blame my lack of knowledge and my "entry-levelness" if you will on it being okay that I was just learning. God convicted me on the importance of my children wanting to learn and the quality of their learning. Also what they are witnessing in our daily environment, as far as structure and discipline. It's really important. I don't test but I am looking for ways to hold myself accountable and to make sure my kids are advancing properly in their studies. My children are still young and I do have a bit of grace on myself for my learning curve but I don't want to allow for my children to slack on in the name of laziness on my part.

    We live in the paradox of living with the multi generational eternal perspective and live like today is our last day and Christ could return any moment. We have to keep both in view. Some of us live only in the moment and are driven by "the tyranny of the urgent" (that's a book title) and forget about eternity or the generations or Christ's return. We should have expectancy that keeps us putting oil in our lamps. I lost site of that during my busy child rearing, homeschool years. Don't put off your prayer and word life saying you don't have time
    That's the foolish virgin mentality.

    • @RCGWho
      @RCGWho 8 месяцев назад

      Additionally, we should give our children the best education our finances and abilities allow while also NOT buying into the temporal mindset of the worship of education. Going to college is such an obsession in the western world. I think we should think more outside the box in teaching our children to be very prayerful about their gifts and callings and not idolize a college education. Today it's a near 100k just to be indoctrinated in liberalism, party, go into debt, and get the piece of paper to make us and our parents proud. I was thinking about my girlfriend and their college educations. 3 only used their degrees for about 2 years only to marry and have children. Brother in law has a masters. Never used it. He was a little writing major and is a restaurant gm. Another friend got a journalism degree. Used it a couple years, then became a missionary. I've got another friend who used to be an education junky who is emphasizing missions with her kids and has sent several to ywam either for gap year or as a life. I think that is super admirable!

      I know I’m not who you’re asking, but I went to Christian private schools for the majority of my education. I switched to public schools in the middle of 7th grade. I loved it and credit my positive public school experience with my solid foundation of Christian education. I sent my kids to private school up until this year. Our experience with that was wonderful and we keep in touch with the friends we’ve made there. The primary reason for pulling them was because of the pandemic being in my older children’s preschool-1st grade years, they were on par with their peers, but everyone was behind grade level. Since starting homeschooling their reading fluency and comprehension have improved significantly, so have their math skills, which were always very strong.
      I don’t foresee another pandemic, but keep in mind interruptions to their learning can affect them negatively, so supplement as best you can. I was basically treading water that whole year with a new baby and figuring out how to do school online, plus added postpartum anxiety. Hopefully if it does happen again you’ll be better prepared than I was.
      Anyway, private schools are an incredible option if you have the resources and inclination to send your kids there, based on my personal experience.

I don’t see that represented at all, that would be FAR better than what is dominant. I see it as tyrannical, narcissistic and oppressive at best, Luciferian and Satanic at worst.

There was never some weird agenda taught. I remember debating abortion in high school health, and I was encouraged to do so. I would just be wary to develop a picture of what all public schools look like... Many run very well and their scores and student success shows that (my elementary school best friends have PhDs, MBAs, and Masters... nothing lower than that. And therefore they are able to provide for their families.) I do wonder if homeschoolers are even wanting their children to get higher education? They seem to have a lot of conspiracy theories about colleges rather than being confident in their children and young adults to go out and be lights in the world.
