Seeing Steven below top 5 hurt me on an emotional level. His design is so sleek and classy. His metal sleeve cuffs look so cool and fits so well. His silver hair and metal rings convey the steel type so well. Yes, he goes on caves to find rare rocks, but he's also the heir to the Devon corporation so it makes sense he's wearing a classy suit with his high status
What makes Pheobe stand out is that she doesn't look like a Ghost-Type user. Her story is that she was really into island dancing that she found a way to communicate with the spirits. Though that purple recolouring does look good.
In a game where it’s nothing but water and barely land, I think having most of the characters lookin like they use water is kinda funny in a way. Like Drake is a Pirate, Phoebe is mostly a dancer and that’s how she communicates with spirits, and Brawly probably does swim as part of his exercise
I think Norman's design does a pretty good job at conveying his personnality. He's the stern, strict, academic japanese father archetype. Probably loves his child but doesn't really know how to communicate with them as a parent, so he uses his pokemon to do so. It's not wholly inspired, but I think it works well.
Flannery's design has an extra little bit of genius in it with her belt: not only is her "belt" actually a small towel, such as you might take with you into a hot spring, but it even has the Japanese hot spring symbol on it! Except, oho - they've adjusted the squiggly steam lines in the symbol to be a flame instead. It's deviously clever and just as subtle.
Heck yeah, another Pokemon Gym Leader video! I love these :D So much insight into the designs. I really like the addition of a visual rating system with the stars on the key aspects of design they need to be strong o: It also helps to let you talk more about other aspects than just those categories - very efficient!
Oh I love these videos SO much. I always love the attention to detail on designs that I’m familiar with but never looked so closely at, it reveals so much about how good the best ones are.
Yay this series is back! Literally the reason I joined the spriinkle cult Also real weird Juan isn't in ORAS. They sorta gave Wallace development with Lisia, so why no Juan? Make him the way you got Slowbronite idk :( Though I do wonder how you'll rank the Galar guys when you inevitably get to them, considering their types are *very* clear with the uniforms and logos.
Got no arguments over my fave of this region Flannery's position, especially with how well her design looks like what you'd expect for a young adult still trying to find how they can inject their own style to a look that they feel screams "I'm a professional Gym Leader" in the same way she's still trying to figure out her opening speech. Out of curiosity though since you obviously didn't consider them among this lineup, where/how would you rank Lisia and Zinnia from ORAS?
Hmmm, Zinnia would be a bit lower, since while it's a fun design it's a little messy and I'm not really getting "dragon" from her. Lisia's super cute, nails the idol look and bonus points for resembling her Altaria. She may have been able to overtake the Number 1 slot!
In retrospect, were I to have designed Norman I'd have given him Professor Birch's dad-bod design. I get the idea of making him kind of a daunting figure to overcome, but for a gym leader whose Pokemon ace is a Slaking I think a more laid-back 'I'm here for the slow tropical life"-vibe makes more sense and serve to make him more of lovable as the PC's dad.
Fav is probably Drake but I admit he looks like Gyrados is his main Pokemon which I find funny as a non-dragon dragon water-type for his water-type looking dragon trainer.
Fun fact: steven isn’t actually a steel type specialist . He uses a combination of steel rock and ground which perfectly captures his loves of rare stones
- I’m remiss there’s no separate rating for the battle frontier leaders; I understand their screen time contributes to their omission - I always thought Winona’s shirt design meant to mirror Torchic which is neat. - My favorites are usually Wallace, Winona then Steven. They’re very memorable to me both in design and difficulty.
I'm sure eventually I'll get around to ranking the frontier brains, rivals, professors, evil leaders, etc. lol, Gonna do a huge 500+ mega-rank to recap it all when I do! Wallace was SO CLOSE to being number 1, I totally get it!
The torchic mirror would be fascinating. A human who wants nothing more than to fly based on a bird who remains flightless even as it evolves. A pokemon who can only scrape the sky (sky uppercut).
My list would look waaaay different to this lololol even though I agree with a lot of your points lol. Wallace would absolutely be at the number 1 spot for me, his scarf and capelet I think do a good job at emulating waterfalls whilst also representing his ace Pokemon. Flannery's design would be a lil too basic for me to put her at 1 but she def deserves a high spot And I heavily agree with what you said about Wallace feeling more like the Hoenn champion over Steven who I almost feel would've worked better as an E4 member. Did you know though, in the manga Wallace actually defeats Steven but refuses to take the role of champion? Explains why Steven hands down the role of champion to him in Emerald Wallace is technically stronger (tho I suppose the anime has changed things since then). Can't wait for the Sinnoh region, Pearl was my first game, very curious to see where you'll put everyone. Wish they gave everyone redesigns tho, out of all the gym leaders now, the Sinnoh characters feel the most outdated (barring a couple of exceptions).
I think an easy way to maybe fix Drake’s design while still keeping the sea captain aesthetic is to change the blue of his coat to the classic dragon type red/orange and maybe replacing the pokeballs on his outfit to charizard since despite not being a dragon type, they have used the shape of Charizard’s head to represent the dragon type for a while now.
Gen 3 really was the last of important trainers designs mostly being "just wearing cool clothes, may or may not have a color matching type specialty". Not that it was bad though, a lot of them were just clean af designs. Like with the Johto gals, I actually prefer the classic looks for Roxanne and Flannery specifically. For Roxanne, I just always had a weird aversion to big poofy flare out dresses/skirts on characters that I still honestly don't know the reason for lol. For Flannery, I think it's more a case of me just preferring the artstyle of the original key art. And maybe I'm just nostalgic for how early 2000's the outfit is in its simplicity. But I can agree in her case, ORAS conveys the actual character better with its changes.
I think they emphasize the blue and beach vibes a lot because Hoenn is pretty much cover with water, but that itself is the problem as well like how you stated in the video.
Okay, my impressions may be off because Emerald was the only Hoenn game I played. Judging by what I know, my favourite design is Winona's. She's weird, conveys her type perfectly and her design is just so pretty. Flannery, Wallace, Wattson and Sydney are also great. It's weird how Kanto and Johto seem to communicate their types more clearly despite their technical limitations. I mean, yeah sure, Phoebe and Roxanne are soooo cute, but you wouldn't know what they are all about just seeing their designs.
Very late here but I think the reason is because in gen 3 they really started to try out more on the personality, not that they are that good at it and redesigns can only change so much whitout replacing
My faves are Flannery, Roxanne and Brawly for their perfect glow up on oras, they look great in the remakes. Also now that you've mentioned it maybe the fact that many leaders and elite members seem to be water themed might be because they are in the region known for having too much water/places where you have to swim to travel. Tho I feel the whole idea has been handled better in sun and moon.
I have a massive conspiracy theory that is based on pure speculation, but I actually think that the story planners intended for Norman to be a deadbeat father. Hear me out. Norman does not live with you and Mom, but instead in a different town. When you meet him at first, he turns you away And doesn’t want to battle you. Only later do you battle him and his Pokémon, lo and behold, are sloths with the truant ability which epitomizes the character of a deadbeat dad. I think it is no coincidence that they designed slacking with that ability and gave it to your father. It completely fits with the theme that the character has a father who is not active in his life. This would’ve given the game a surprisingly emotionally charged storyline, but didn’t end up going with it. This is also why Flannery is the gym leader you fight before him, since she has a similar storyline, based around her father and wanting to please him. Flannery is a sort of foil to your character assuming that the estranged father son storyline was in the game.
I’d be curious what you think of the new designs in Pokémon scarlet and violet. I feel like there are a lot of unique things about them, that I would love to hear your opinion on
Yeah Gen 3 is one of my favorite personally because it was my first game I played I never really made it to the elite four because I got lost all the time that and my stepdad threw it away until I got the remakes I never really knew what they look like on the elite four until later on and I can see what you're saying so the gym leaders don't really look like they're conveying the right types I mean I can kind of see glaciea maybe she's been better off in Gen 4 maybe cuz then she could have had a glaceon yes I know what I'm doing here and everyone else was really interesting to me and for the longest time I always thought both twins were girls because every other twins you bump into in the game where girls but then I saw the animes like oh so Tate is a boy and I just thought he stole his hair different to tell which one was which in the original but I would say my personal favorite still has to go to flannery cuz also how she acted in the anime when we got to see her trying to be a new gym leader
Hey! Would you ever considering doing a review of the Critical Role official character designs? Between the official artwork and the artwork from Legend of Vox Machina, I feel like there’s a lot of content to examine.
Juan has an ok design but he's not very interresting or memorable like Claire, Blue, Flanery or Giovanni. The adult likes pokemons and that's it! Maybe if his outfit would be different and represent more his favorite type, it would help him. For now, i can't say this guy is cool 🤨
criticism: did we really need the "who's that pokemon line" before every character? IMO, by number 8, i wanted to stop watching the video, it got annoying real quick. Jus calling out their number placing would be enough.
I think it's a cute transition, and I think it's fun that viewers can "play along" and see if they can identify the Leader by their silhouette. It's also only 2 seconds long.
I know you might not reply, but I genuinely really enjoy your Pokemon designs or character design videos. They are really fun to listen to. Even though Steven is still my favorite champion and design in Pokemon. I completely agree with your Steven criticism; it would have been interesting if they had gone for an adventurous style. On that, what do you think of Steven's anime outfit (Advance Generation First appears in?)
I like them a lot too. I've been meaning to rank the Kalos leaders but I keep getting sidetracked with other projects. lol Don't worry though, it will come in the not-too distant future!
@twiinsiink really looks forward to the Kalos videos whenever it comes out. I enjoy your commentary on each design. Please take your time, and have a wonderful day/evening.

The real question is, if Twiins iink and Judgmental critter were gym leaders what type would they use?
I would use fighting :)
I would use electric!
So pawmot
Pogers
@@twiinsiink You should design yourself, Critter and Allison as gym leaders.
In a game where it’s nothing but water and barely land, I think having most of the characters lookin like they use water is kinda funny in a way. Like Drake is a Pirate, Phoebe is mostly a dancer and that’s how she communicates with spirits, and Brawly probably does swim as part of his exercise
I was just rewatching the other videos and said: "Man, I miss this series." Well it seems like someone heard my prayers.
I feel like this always happens, lol. I'm like Beetlejuice
Norman walked so Larry could run(...fly)
When I first saw Drake, I thought his coat looked so awesome. Probably made him my favorite elite 4 along with sidney.
Same man
I think Norman's design does a pretty good job at conveying his personnality. He's the stern, strict, academic japanese father archetype. Probably loves his child but doesn't really know how to communicate with them as a parent, so he uses his pokemon to do so.
It's not wholly inspired, but I think it works well.
Even his silhouette is symmetrical which makes me love his design even more
Flannery's design has an extra little bit of genius in it with her belt: not only is her "belt" actually a small towel, such as you might take with you into a hot spring, but it even has the Japanese hot spring symbol on it! Barely any gym leader or elite 4 in this series look straight I swear and love it
Oh I love these videos SO much. I always love the attention to detail on designs that I’m familiar with but never looked so closely at, it reveals so much about how good the best ones are.

This was a nice surprise
Can't wait to see you cover gen 4
i love your commentary on these videos, the human character designs in pokemon are so unique and not talked abt enough
Fun video idea: Critter and Twins draw yourselves as gym leaders with your signature Pokémon
Got no arguments over my fave of this region Flannery's position, especially with how well her design looks like what you'd expect for a young adult still trying to find how they can inject their own style to a look that they feel screams "I'm a professional Gym Leader" in the same way she's still trying to figure out her opening speech.

now I kind of want to see Twiins redesign the characters to make their type and personality clearer
A clever thing about Flannery's jeans is that they also have a firey theme- as they are "flair/flare" jeans.
these are my favourite videos you make, always love hearing your insights :)

(go down to "Notable Steel-type Trainers")
winona's design is blowing me away * o * easily my favorite out of the bunch
Im so happy this series is back! Looking forward to the rest of the regions :)
- I’m remiss there’s no separate rating for the battle frontier leaders; I understand their screen time contributes to their omission

Doesn't Flannery look a bit like Frankie for Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends?
In Hoenn, even those who don't use water Pokemon are corrupted by their environment.
In Masters EX he has a version of his outfit that's colored like Salamance, and I think that helped a lot too.
Can't wait for your opinion of Larry
I know that you did videos of teams based on Banjo Kazooie stages, but I think it would be fun if you built a team for yourself, Allison, and critter.
I find it fitting that Wallace and Winona have the most out there outfits cause in the manga they're a couple. They just suit each other🤭

Winona looks like a megaman character that would be named Wingwoman
I'm sorry, but to me Brawly is the least memorable Hoenn gym leader.
Flannery is definitely number 1. All the way.
Always knew there was a reason why flannery is my fav gym leader
I always thought Winonas outfit resembled a wingsuit
Wait till she gets to gen 9 so perfect 👌
So glad my girl flannery made top spot
How do you feel about Digimon?
Is your fav Sinnoh Elite 4 member Lucian?
Hell yeah, we absolutely agree on number 1. She's an obvious pick though
Hey! Would you ever considering doing a review of the Critical Role official character designs? Between the official artwork and the artwork from Legend of Vox Machina, I feel like there’s a lot of content to examine.
Steven got done dirty. No way he isn’t top 5…
I'm sure this was already said, but just in case, you have "Does IS show their personality"
💀
One day I won't embarrass myself

Winona has the best design!
jaun is last cus he's french (real)
People HATE Sidney's design? It's such a cool design!
:)
Can you put a flash warning in the title please?
For what?
