- In this video I find Rocky Mountain smoky quartz in a small pocket. I show what I found on the surface that sparked my interest, and then the video picks up in my test hole where I am finding good signs that leads to a crystal pocket! I thought the pocket ended; but upon subsequent trips I discovered the pocket continued with some wonderful specimens! Stay tuned for more footage of this awesome quartz pocket where I'm finding crystals!

I really prefer these wholesome quartz pocket videos as opposed to the silly rich folk who are using machines to tear deep into the earth with little to no effort. This type of prospecting is just so much cooler & magical. Well done sir
For what it counts I personally loved the music! Very mystical soundscape gives a magical atmosphere
Thanks for the feedback Johnny! That was written specifically for the video.
@@obliqrecordings Of course my good man i see the production skills, these things dont go unnoticed
So the ladybug really does bring luck 😊🐞
I'm getting lucky cause I got a snow quartz
idk how you contain yourself... i scream everytime i find a tiny crystal on the surface
Its a joy pulling out each one! No words for it actually :).
I find these all the time not even knowing it was quarts
@@obliqrecordingsawesome video dude! had to sub! 👍🏻 where are you located? i do a lot of crystal hunting/Rockhounding here in South Wales (UK) but the only nice truly clear and Euhedral piece of Quartz i've managed to find that had a terminated top and faces was about the size of a piece of corn and was a lucky surface find at a local river! usually it's things like Hematite, Calcite, Gypsum, Jasper and some Agates that pack the nice banding, my real interest and what i collect are Quartz and Fluorite! it's frustrating sometimes as apart from combing beaches, river banks and old quarries i don't know 'what to look out for' i'd love to know how you came across this lovely pocket? was it a surface find or something specific such as the area or terrain?
@@jimmymcgill2557 These were filmed in Colorado USA. I do a lot of prospecting and where I see pegmatite and/or quartz/feldspar chunks on the surface I do test holes and follow them uphill to their (hopeful) source. Maybe 1 out of every 25 or so holes leads to crystals, so lots of effort but when it pays off it really is great! This particular crystal pocket I hit right away by kicking over a quartz rock mostly buried in the dirt; there were flat sides all over the buried side. One test hole later and a fully euhedral crystal came out, and then I followed them deeper into their source, as you saw.
@@obliqrecordingsawesome! thank you so much i appreciate it, you definitely got some great finds! 😬👍🏻
Finally he says why the flat sides are important. I have wondered why I only ever find a rather plain quartz rock. Now I will keep digging. :)
Ditto. Al i ever found was angled chunks. Once flat, but it dont count since it was in soil that was moved...
I did find dense small calcite cluster though...that fell of a truck...
I've found microcline (feldspar) crystals in the area that are grown solid in the pegmatite, but they pull apart perfect crystals with non-formed chunks of quartz between.
What a thrill! I would of thrown my phone and gone in with two hands! Your patience is commendable! Haha thanks for sharing!
The recording helps me find pieces that might fit together later, that's why I started filming! Tons of fun!
Best way to find them is to GET OUT THERE AND ADVENTURE. Yes, do your research but make it a point to really take the time to be intentional about being outside, trying something new, and letting nothing hold you back. My girlfriend Nicholette is a prime example of someone who does just that, shes in a wheelchair but is relentless about being outside. Live free, friends
Thank you, well stated, and I couldn't agree more. My saying is "you have to play to win"!
@@obliqrecordings Hey true that man! Can't win it unless you in it! We just got done with our first emerald mine and its a really old one with no new tailings in dozens of years so I didn't expect us to get anything but we actually found gem quality emerald. Couldn't of done that without risking it cause of how old the pilings were!
I took a hiking trip through the Sierra Nevada. At the start of the hike we were surrounded by mountains and we were in a grassy valley type of area. I see a whitish rock sticking out of the ground that for some reason caught my eye, just had an interesting shape. I stopped my group to dig it up and once I fully uncovered it I had a 7 inch long beautiful rock. I thought I found something magical but was informed it was quartz and all over in that area but the piece I found was definitely worth holding onto. I cleaned it up and still have it from that trip. It has flat sides but is far from perfectly flat and eventually realized it was milky quarts but still cool
Quartz is everywhere
damn so that is quartz? i never realized it. This looks really the same on a random stone in our house ngl haha
Oh my goodness thank you so much for this. I live in the Appalachian mountains and want to go dig crystals but had no idea even how to, I know where to look, but not how to find them. Thank you so much. Blessings!🙏🥰

i found a lot of this when i was a kid
I found so much when I was a kid. I'm 51 now I grew up in a new development in Charlotte back then it was considered the outskirts of town and it was woods where they built the neighborhood and chunks of quartz was laying in the sides of the road I think 🤔 t was found in the white cement in the curb part of the road or it was in abundance and was jus there from a pocket they hit making the roads. Am I allowed to tk quartz if found in the forest?
Same, but in stones right
playing in the dirt and finding cool things, lucky tfs
When I discovered I could actual find treasures when playing in the dirt, I was hooked!
I think the music is good. Very nice finds!
Thank you Kate for the comments! It was a ton of fun!
So can you find the crystals anywhere like on my backyard?
Yes
Once I was playing in the dirt I was digging and saw the biggest clear rock it was kind of pink so I gave it to my mom and she put it on water then she says it looks like a diamond
Sounds awesome, rocks are great gifts!
Might be a rose quartz

So my street is sloped so the bottom of the street is way lower and I keep finding crystals with faucets everywhere, and they're unweathered at the top of the street and the bottom and on both sides of the street. Everywhere on my street looks like a promising location for a crystal pocket but that can't be true though. I'm personally confused so do you have any suggestions?
One day I was randomly walking through a park and found a quartz (also it was like in the ground and had a lot of soil on it) and I honestly feel like the universe is trying to tell me something
Ik sounds weird but

@@quinnyquinn4555 I assume you live in the western parts of the world ... I live in asia and also, the first thing I felt like doing when I came home with the quartz was to wash it and put it inthe sunlight, which I later learned is a way of cleansing and recharging your Crystal's.

Bro if only you knew....
The universe tells you alot of things but us humans tend to ignore it. If you become spiritual, you'll know that there are no coincidences. For example, has your attention randomly went to something amazing without actually seeing it? Like your comment for example
Wow ! You rock my world 😍
lol, thx!
What about quartz from
river banks?
Just got shown this video at the Colo Spgs Min Society meeting. Still can't believe how shallow you found all this. :)
Given the millions of years of erosion, crystals can be at the present day surface, present day above you, or still deep underground. Got lucky on this one!
I have so many from hiking here in SoCal San Gabriel mountains like A LOT !! I have them in 2 big coolers an boxes because I'm confused on what to do with all of them
Tumble them gloss them sell them
Advertise with pics of lights under them they should glow
@0:58 “the bug, the man, the legend.”
Great stuff!! I'm just getting into actually digging for crystals; my family owns 80 acres in Estes Park, CO and for years I've collected pebbles and fragments of quartz lying around. I feel certain there is at least one pocket of something somewhere here, lots of big quartz granite/mica chunks piled up in various places. My question is, how far down do you normally need to dig? Do you usually dig straight down from where a large promising rock is found? I'm almost certain I've found graphic granite and perhaps even pegmatite, I do have a field guide and have been working to identify things on my own, but am eager to my hand in the dirt 😁
I will have to research if there are pegmatite formations around estes. I know north of you there is amythest and quartz, but they grow in different formations than in the Pikes Peak Batholith. I have a blog post on red feather lakes crystals on davealex.com that may be more similar to your area. Check out Voynick's book Colorado Rockhounding for known locations and topo maps for "prospects" in your area.
Beautiful! 😍😍 Do you sell your finds somewhere? I don't see a link in the description, comments, About page on RUclips, or your blog.
At this time I don't not have a storefront
Found a quartz crystal the size of my index finger, i used to have 2 clusters when i was 7, today ill start searching for crystals once again
Lady bugs are good luck. Look what happens
I dunno where to even start
Start digging under a place where u found some surface quartz
I have a question, is quartz often found in clay? When i dig holes with my shovel on a field in clay i often find quartz
found my first 2 pieces of quartz ( both small ) a piece of rose quartz and a piece of vein quartz
Nice guide on finding crystal "pockets" thanks!
Hey so I was wondering how do you spot a crystal pocket and do you have to live in a certain area to have them
You have to know where crystals are generally available, which there are many good books and online resources for this. Then you have to know general techniques on what to look for. I have more information on my blog at davealex.com (search for how to find crystals) or I'd recommend to join a rock club in your area.
Wow that was a loaded baked potato sized crystal 😂😍
If you could entertain me with a question or two I’d be a thankful. So I’ve been a rock hunter all my life, and I’ve got quite the mound of rocks and geos that I’ve kept over the years. But I’ve never considered myself a “professor” in what I do at all, and it was just kinda if I see one take it home thing. I’m just now actually getting into the “Rock hound” and mining community, didn’t even know that there was a name for people like us 😂 but anyways my question is, if I find a nice quarts or a nice geo on the ground, do I just start digging in that area or beneath where I found it? How do I go about doing that? I’m trying to learn how to determine where nice pockets are to start digging
Hi Joshua. Let's start here, hopefully this is helpful. davealex.com/earthfire/how-to-find-crystals/
obliqrecordings thank you sir very helpful information
Last summer I went camping in Western Washington and this stuff was everywhere along with petrified wood and silver. It was just on the path and we had a geologist with it even more exiting and my friend even found a little bit of amethyst. Also, that camp had a ton of fire ants too.
sounds amazing, hopefully you got to keep a couple?

Can you quickly explain why a Pegmatite would have a pocket? Isn't a pegmatite solid rock? Or are you hoping that the crystal grew in the pegmatite fell out once Feldspar and Mica weathered away?
The crystals can grow wherever there is room; the host rocks have cracks due to shifting over time where the crystal fluids can travel to. Some pockets I find in place, and others I find because I follow the crystals that have weathered out back up the hill to their source.
hi! my grandpa found a quartz about that size and gave it to me! still covered in dirt cant see inside. he has passed away and im looking into really cleaning it and showing its potential. do you know what steps i have to take to accomplish that!
a very simple procedure. Just obtain some oxalic acid, and use 3lbs. acid per 5 gallons of water. submerge the crystals for 1 week. wash with water to rinse all acid.
You can also use Super Iron Out available from online sources or your local stores.
I wish I could find one . Do you think a small round rock that weighs more than what it should could be a geode ?
Geodes are hollow inside, so they weigh less than an equal rock of the same mineral.
Well if you find a circle like rock cut it open then you get a crystals 😊
Gracias de Brasil 🤠
On my crystal mound there is a hole that takes water and doesn't fill up. Is this a secret crystal cave below?
That would be amazing! I doubt it, but you never know until you check it out!
You should definitely explore it, and you might not find crystals immediately, but sense it is on your crystal mound over time crystals could've fallen in creating a crystal pile at the bottom of the cave/hole
where is this, and what are the signs of knowing you're on the right trail?
This is near Pikes Peak Colorado. The crystals in the Pikes Peak Batholith form in pegmatite. You know you're on the trail if you are finding rocks that have larger segments of feldspar and quartz together. When the hot liquid cools the rocks crystalize, if the concentrations of minerals are right, and the temperature and pressure and other factors are all aligned, then the crystals will form in cavities or cracks in the host rock. Then over time the host rock decomposes (sometimes) and leaves the crystals. I keep an eye out for flat sides on quartz or the feldspar and pegmatite on the surface and also when I dig test holes. I have some articles on my blog that go into more detail with pictures too... davealex.com
Damn I found things like this so many time and bigger like this not knowing those were Crystal
Look for the flat sides!
I only find milky quartz but is possible to find pockets in the southeastern states
I have some amazing milky quartz! I bet that is just as fun
I collect these stuff after every camping and hiking.
It's hard to look where you're going when you are always looking for rocks! Me too!
Question..I live in Massachusetts on 43 acres..its loaded with quartz..and there is an old quartz mine on our property..but I've never seen any crystals...should there be crystals here since there's so much quartz here?
Maybe. Sometimes you get that decorative quartz rock and no crystals, but if there was an air bubble or small opening when the crystals formed there is a chance for crystals. Have you seen any single perfectly flat sides (the remainder not flat)?
@@obliqrecordings yes and I did pull a tiny crystal attached to a clump of quartz
@@lindamalcovsky in one place I dig there are large quartz "blowouts" that mostly are just quartz, but throughout there is potential for pockets of crystals. If the quartz is more in veins, follow those. Crystals will form from a pressurized liquid when there is space and the pressure and temperature is just right. Quartz is one of the most abundance minerals on the planet, but the conditions have to be right to form crystals, showing you how rare those conditions are.
Let me know what's up contact me I'll help you that's so awesome you're sitting on crystal land
@@torismith9591 no crystals yet..but ill keep looking..do u live in western Massachusetts

How do u now if this place inside it crystal or not?
There are know crystals in this area, so I just have to find them.
On my property I have a mound of quartz. Has some red black and mostly white. I found some pyrite and miss. I dug three 1 foot test holes the ground it tough but nothing. I see flats forming and shinny edges. What do I do? Dig more?
It's hard to tell, many times the quartz I dig is not crystalized. Look for red stains on the quartz and surrounding dirt, and follow it.
@@obliqrecordings yea got an area where red and white quartz comes from and also a black n white. Will dig a test hole in red. Is water underground a good sign? Got well and moss on top of crystals
@@obliqrecordings thanks for the reply
@@jameshughes131 crystals need space to grow generally, so they would be in cavity or opening or seam. Commonly there is space around the crystals in those openings and iron minerals come in and coat the crystals after they are formed. So following the iron staining could lead to crystals
@@obliqrecordings I found a cavity but havnt dug it yet.

How do you identify where a good vein is from the surface. Any suggestions
You just look for crystals, parts and pieces, or pegmatite indicators. Sometimes I just dig a test hole where quartz or feldspar is exposed.
