Console desync? How do PC players get it? (Battlefield 2042)

  • I've seen too many clips of desync or lag, streams and videos from console players that genuinely make me question if the console version of the game runs differently than the PC version. Is it because a lot of console players play on Wi-Fi? Do consoles have to pass through Xbox/Playstation servers before they can reach the game server? Wi-Fi wouldn't make it faster or a more stable connection over ethernet and having game traffic pass through a separate network or server just to reach a game server would add latency in one form or another. In both cases that makes me wonder if degrading your network performance gives you a positive effect in-game where desync swings in your favor. If that is the case then that makes me question how much of the client-hybrid hit detection in the game still involves the server and how much power was given to the client. Or is it something else? Is the client, send, update, whatever you want to call it rate different on console vs PC? Yes I'm still referring to the most recent generation of consoles that can crossplay with PC players. The Network Performance Bar and Network Performance graph don't show client/update tick rate or the frequency it updates the server, only server tick rate is shown. If console hardware wasn't enough for the game would they try to squeeze out processing and performance by lowering the update rate for the client? Is it variable and changes depending on what is going on during the game? Yes it's a guess. It's one of the reasons I asked when it would be include in the Network Performance Bar/Graph. I never got a response so I can't help but wonder if those scenarios I mentioned are why it wasn't added. We know from the DICE developers that in BF3 the server tick rate was 30hz and the update rate was 10hz, has anyone been able to show with proof what the update rate is for consoles or PC in BF2042? Most of this is just spitballing nonsense so don't take it too seriously, just speculation based on curiosity because I don't know why situations like this are possible outside of high ping/latency players being the cause and from what I can tell the matchmaking doesn't try to bring in people from out of region so pings should be similar or closer then they were in previous Battlefield games.
    It certainly would make troubleshooting the issue easier if the scoreboard showed the ping of EVERYONE in the server.
    I didn't make this a YT short because I wanted to show all of the screen and include the player card to show it was a console player.

    I dislike playing with cross play on PS5 as it's a much worse experience than playing with it off. It's gotten a bit better over time but the only way I can describe it is with cross play on it was like playing in treacle. Now with it on it is noticeably worse but not quite as bad. I suspect it's related to PS5, Xbox and PC networking all having to talk to each other and adding latency issues because of that. If you throw a bad connection on top it makes it even worse.

    Coming from someone who played a lot of MW2 on PC on dodgy internet, this just looks like lag plus maybe low tickrate (at least compared to valorant or similar). I don't know why anyone would assume a player that joins at low ping will stay at low ping. I've never had internet that consistent and a lot of people never will. Any number of issues could be piled on top of that and add complexity, but if it happened to me I'd just assume they were lagging. DO BF servers boot people whose pings is unstable? Even if they do I'd be surprised if it were very strict.

    • @Ravic
      @Ravic  2 месяца назад

      If the connection is actually unstable where there is real packet loss players will get disconnected by the backend account servers if they fail too many check-ins with it. The point of the video isn't really about lag or unstable internet although it would be nice to see the pings of everyone in the server on the scoreboard. The point is this kind of stuff only seems to happen when the enemy player is on console specifically. As in why do console players have such significant desync vs PC players.

    Cross play ain't it. It's not worth artificially filling up servers if we get situations like these. Been saying this since Warzone 1 launched, amongst other reasons.

    • @Ravic
      @Ravic  2 месяца назад +2

      I don't recall getting a lot of these situations with console players in the first Warzone. Sure plenty of fights lost due to aim assist or no recoil for controllers but there wasn't the frequent "one frame" deaths like we get in BF2042 when getting killed by console players. I'm torn on the subject because without crossplay this game would probably be empty most nights for PC players at least in some regions. I would rather know the cause so a solution could be found to address it.

    • @troypowers750
      @troypowers750 2 месяца назад +2

      @Ravic maybe not that blatant of desync, but it was pretty dire to be playing during the mid seasons. I still remember that getting into a shootout with all those effects and screen shake would completely tank performance on PS4. I have a lot more concerns other than technical issues, like cheating, sensitivity differences (and how it still handles like older COD games and not nearly fast, smooth, or precise enough as BF4 and Dying Light on that same console), and how locking your platform preferences basically does nothing because people are generally unaware of that option being in the game.

    from looking frame by frame you teleported to him. If his position lags behind yours because he is on console that could explain it. like on his screen you ran past him sort of thing. this doesnt seem likely but who knows. your shot connecting is the confusing part. you would think positional and rotational information would be conjoined.

  • @geronimos_gh0st886
    @geronimos_gh0st886 2 месяца назад

    I think it is their packet prioritization strategy. Let me explain. Mid lifecycle of bf1 they started messing with things to give high pingers (>100 ping) a "better experience". Basically, even though the server saw your kill shots first it would still consider your fellow players packets and then if it deamemed they won the gun fight (ie. It prioritized their packets) you were dead instantly and it was pretty obvious and wonky from how the game had been, especially with the slow ttk. To help the instant death issue they even tried lowering the ttk rates which helps hide the issue. You could still notice it in bf5 especially with shotguns. You would get a killshot off but then you died even though you saw no shots/damage from the other player until after your shot.
    I would be willing to bet that someone at dice decided that because most pc players have better hardware, that in order to give console players a "better experience", they would prioritize their packet data ever so slightly. Not so obvious but still noticable to someone who plays as much as you. Do i know that for sure. No. But thats what i would guess. Combine that with the diffenences in ping and there you go.

    • @Ravic
      @Ravic  2 месяца назад +1

      They have been doing the "give all players the same experience" since BF3. DICE explained that was their reasoning to switching to client-hybrid hit detection when going from the alpha to the beta in BF3 because the alpha was still running server-side hit detection. Their reasoning was they wanted to make the gameplay experience feel the same whether a player had 20 ping or 200 ping. It gave advantages to certain ping ranges back then as well and continued to do so throughout following Battlefield titles. I don't think that is what occurred in the video because matchmaking in BF2042 doesn't really allow console players to venture out of their region so they'd have to jump through a lot of hoops to do so. That and as I mentioned in the video description these kinds of issues seem to only occur when facing a console player. However giving console player's traffic/packets higher prioritization is technically a possibility but I can't imagine that getting through all the tiers of development management at DICE.

    So I can explain this as a console player who has personally done this numerous times.
    Its just the prompt, the prompt appears on screen "Hold X" essentially, I dont think it was Desync unless they were lagging, next gen servers (xplay with PC) run on 60hz servers so desync is unlikely, though I can understand why you'd think it was a desync _(it does look like it)_ - But essentially as you crossed in front of them, on their screen they saw the takedown prompt and clicked it, then you got sucked into the animation.
    _Never thought I'd enjoy watching another man beat you off though.._

    • @Ravic

      I mention in the video description we don't know what the client/send/update rate is for BF2042 and if it's different from the server tick rate, nor do we know if it's the same for consoles yes even next gen ones that can do crossplay with PC. The server tick rate for BF2042 is 45hz not 60hz. The other point mentioned in the video description is this kind of stuff only occurs when facing a console player, not against PC players. So the question still stands, how do PC players get this because if it's not desync then what you are indicating is console players get an unfair advantage where a melee takedown prompt will appear no matter what direction a PC player is facing so long as that PC player is within a certain range of the console player.

    To me, it feels like DICE implements mechanics so certain types of players have advantages. COD does this too, with different hitboxes based on skill, etc. I have no proof, but it feels very different getting killed by console players. Watching people play BF2042 on console also feels like watching a different game; it's way more forgiving. I sometimes get killed before I pass a corner, as if the game knows I'm there a second ahead, and I already receive damage. I also experience receiving damage first and hearing shots later. I constantly feel like I am at a disadvantage, even though I have a ping of 20-28.
