The Pharcyde were decades ahead of their time. Even for this album to drop in 1992, it was so progressive before other albums such as Enter the Wu or Midnight Marauders even dropped a year later. This is hip hop royally.
Feels like one of the first ever horrorcore tracks, like I know gangster rap flirted with the concept of glorified violence and gore, but this feels so much more playful, like the genre would grow to be. I'm not a horrorcore guy either, but I can appreciate how it works here.
I heard in an interview they found all the samples for this album in a storage unit they bought, pretty amazing collection if that’s true, I mean that Eddie Russ sample for passing me by is so obscure and golden

This song used to be on "Music Choice" in the 90's. My brother and I were like "woah" about the final verse. Still love it. I love when she's like, "Oh, my god who is this?"
I still remember this was the first cassette I ever got and listened to front to the back and learned every word. I wanted to be from Cali so bad. So creative and dark but fun and silly. Didn't even need a visual. Allowed me to create my own visual of each character.
Damn bro you said it!! I just watched the video for the first time after hearing the song a hundred times and not knowing an official video was ever made. No matter what, it doesn’t touch the picture I painted in my head of each character. But that’s why the Cyde were brilliantly ahead of their time, tracks like this, “ya mama”, “please mr. officer,” and others just provide such explicit visuals with nothing but audio. Unlike rappers today (and even quite a few from their era) it’s more than just the rhymes. The mixing on this track was too brilliant, and the bouncing back and forth of the voices on the last verse, overlapping each other with his low voice and her highs, such attention to detail. Long live the cyde
Name one track on the album, songs and skits both, that they DIDNT have fun making 😂 These dudes were total clowns, and it shows right through in their music. Very few other rappers can joke and laugh through a whole verse, yet still give the audience something with so much substance front to back. It’s not easy to put into words really. All I know is, I’d give quite a bit to travel back in time to the recording of this album and kick it in the studio with these guys during the recordings
Luv this song and the video. The Pharcyde were one of the best group's back in the day. So different with their style and flow. Coming from the west coast. And the Bizarre Ryde II The Pharcyde album was a hell of an album. A classic by these guys no doubt...
The organ or whatever the instrument is in the background is what makes this song so easy to listen too. Lyrics are just like you are having a conversation.
Oh yeah big dawg I'm still rocking the Pharsyde's first two albums to this day! We were rocking this shit back in Japan back in the day. This group is highly underrated.

I’ve loved this song ever since I used to see the video on Rap City. I wonder if these guys listened to Frank Zappa. The get a real strong Zappa vibe from this, lol.
The thing I want to point out is, at the time, NOBODY was making music like this, from a structural stand point. It was layered like a Bomb Squad track, but with live instrumentation mixed with the samples. The instrumental could almost stand alone and tell the same story. A great example of lyrics being perfectly mapped to a beat. I wish i knew music theory, i could explain it better....
@stephen kost Souls Of Mischief and The Pharcyde were supposed to partner up and do a collaboration called "The Almighty Pythons". Too bad The Pharcyde splintered in two with Imani and Booty Brown being a duo keeping The Pharcyde name. Fatlip and Slimkid Tre are a group going by the name "Bizarre Ride" paying homage to their that made them a household name.

I'll back that statement up too. Go to my playlist "PRODUCT OF THE GOLDEN ERA".

That's what I like about Pharcyde. The diversity in their style.
Fat Lips section was always my favorite on this track. Its so dark and twisted.
I thought I was the only person who seen this as a horror story !!!
The mixing of this song is insanely good.
