- It's my birthday, and I thought I'd treat myself to these new acrylic ink bottle sets, which have recently been released by Mont Marte. Are they any good? Let's find out in my first impressions review today!

I shop at Art Shed in Brisbane and I have seen lots of Mont Marte items for sale there. I haven't been there for a while now so haven't looked for these inks.
The rainbow kitty and cake are wonderful. I loved the version in the dark. Made me smile.

Happy birthday Becky! A little tip before using acrylic inks/acrylics in journals in general is to just prime the page with a couple layers of Gesso first, then sand it down with 80 grit sandpaper before you paint over it. That will save a lot of hassle and headache in the future. The chemicals in acrylic inks/acrylics don't really jive all that well with paper I've found over the years. But a couple layers of gesso can improve one's luck with that.
I'm glad Monte Marte is working on upping their game with their products. I used to hate their cheap quality art supplies and avoided them at all costs. If I ever get to a point where I need some new things, I might give them a go again. But I too am doing art supplies for my Bday and already have my box from Blick Art Supplies, waiting for me in November full of things like watercolors from Rembrandt/VanGogh, Oil Pastels from Sennelier and some glittery FineTec paints. I hope you have a great art filled bday this year!

Many Happy Returns to you!!! Glow in the dark kitty was awesome! I'm kinda on the fence with AI it produces some amazing art, but it's not much fun just typing the words in to produce it, but as you've done it could be fantastic if your stuck for an idea to paint traditionally, I'll defo have to type in surreal/fantasy/wicked/spooky next time I have a go at it :D
Thank you! Yes, AI is kind of creepy but wow it is a great resource for fantasy style images! I have yet to produce anything good, but heaps of others have uploaded their AI creations. There's a website called Playground AI - that has a HUGE collection of images and it's totally worth bookmarking for future reference pics! They're free to download as well (at least the ones I have found, lol). Pixabay is also getting more of them. Type in AI Generated into search and they'll all pop up.

Hey Becky! I actually bought the very same inks just last week! They worked very well on my Etchr 300gsm Fabriano paper sketchbook and there was no seeping into the next page. I suspect that they work better on heavier paper. Just wanted to share that with you! Also, happy birthday!🎂 🍰 🎉

IFluoro acrylics and inks may be a bit more light-fast because of the binder. Who knows? Magenta seems rare for some reason these days. Love your art. Happy birthday!

@@BeckyTregear I know! Magenta is a must! With watercolor, I sometimes sneak a little Magenta watercolor into my gouache if I want a nice purple or orange. I'm wondering if you happen to have some Magenta acrylic, if you could use it for mixing with acrylic inks.

Thanks Becky for reviewing these I have been considering venturing into acrylic ink but I decided on getting just one… magenta… in liquitex first rather than a set. This info is a big help. A comparison of inks on different papers or with gesso first would be helpful. Not many in Oz to do the products here. I love your rainbow kitten 😻

Thank you! AI generated images have really only started becoming a thing in the last year, even few months. I think I'll talk about it more in a future vid because there is a lot of potential for great reference images, especially fantasy style. I am on the fence about the Inkvent calendar; the price of it this year is INSANE for me to buy from Australia! 😭

Too bad about the initial swatching in your Hahnemuhle book especially since the painting it bled onto was a favorite. Then they had the nerve to put the inks on sale after you purchased them. Thank you! Ahhh the disaster with ink seeping into paper. I can cover the blotches with white ink I think...but I was pretty miffed about that! Anyway, I got there in the end, and cake fixes everything. 😂

First video I saw of yours was your birthday last year. Happy Birthday. I love Art Shed, they're my go to store. :) Cute kitty and the cake came out really well. I used to use a lot of MM paints but ended up giving them all away as I don't really like the quality. But I LOVE their other products.

Happy birthday! The bleed through was heartbreaking 😢 on such a nice painting too! I'm really suprised it did that, surely the sizing should have stopped that? I would be interested to know if it's all inks, or something about those ones?
Thank you! I'm starting to question this paper more and more - the quality isn't living up to the hefty price tag. Super annoying but I'm determined to persevere with the book and finish it eventually. Watercolours and pencils only by the looks of things - no ink, lol.

Even though it seems wasteful I only use one side of sketchbooks for this reason. Has a lot to do with my primary media being liable to smudge.
That's the sensible thing to do! I use both sides because I like to see the entire book full when flipping through, but the downside is possible leakage like that. I'm gutted, haha!

The thing with the ink swatching is the kind of thing that might happen to me 😅 But at the end of the day we just have to remember it's a piece of paper and mistakes just happen sometimes and it's not the end of the world (annoying as it is lol)
No way...Happy birthday! I love finding people with shared birthdays. 😆 Luckily I scanned my bird collage before I had the ink leak through, and I think by painting on a little white, I can eliminate the worst of it. But suuuuper annoying in an expensive book, lol.

Thank you, I did! I figured cats' eyes reflect light at night so the neon worked pretty well for that effect. I don't think the inks stained my brushes any more than they already were, lol.
FYI I found your video because I bought these inks today from Red Dot (not sure if you have red Dot over east but here in Western Australia its become a higher end version of the original Red Dot and with a huge amount of affordable art supplies & it's almost my second home 😆).
I bought the 6 piece fluoro set and the 6 piece primary + bkk wht, grn set for $12.99 ea.
LNot expecting anything amazing but ooking forward to playing with them and very happy to find your video as a launch pad 😊
I haven't heard of Red Dot so maybe it's a WA thing. We are hoping to drive to Perth later this year and I shall be adding that to my art places of investigation! I hope you have fun using the inks. 😄
I always put a thick paper below the page where i work, it avoid this kind of problem :) Inks seems great, even if i don't mind if they are fluo or not, as i need to see them on daily light^^. But thanks for the review :)
I honestly wasn't expecting them to leak through the paper like that! Normally acrylic inks and pens don't seep through....that's such annoying paper in that sketchbook.😭
I bought a "sable" brush from Mont Marte before and it was ... not good. It just didn't take water and paint very well.
Oh dear! Not all sable brushes are created equal, that's for sure.

Thank you! Water soluble oils is a video I haven't made yet! I think they're generally called water mixable oil paints. Some specific brands which you can search for videos on would be Cobra (Royal Talens?) and Weber wOils. I hope there's something out there!
That's such a bummer that the ink bled through to the previous page. It's such a nice page of drawings. I'm wondering if you were thinking of a way to deter from the bleed through. Maybe a light tone of an ink wash? Just curious. 😊
I'm going to paint a little bit of white onto the page to hide the marks and hope it works! I'm thinking of doing a sketchbook spread video so I'll fix it then, lol.

I'm not a big fan of Monte Mart products. I'm still bitter that they told me those watercolour tube paints of theirs could go in pans, they dried up and would not dissolve when soaked in water for 3 days. They killed my inspiration.
I had that happen with some old watercolour tubes of theirs too - they dried to the point where they all cracked and fell out, doh! Some of their more recent release products have been a lot better to use though, like they've stepped up their game now that art has become serious $$ business.

AI can't be copyrighted as yet it seems.
I looked it up, and there are no laws whatsoever in Australia, or USA....AI can't be copyrighted at this point because it's a machine making images, not a person. So I shall exploit this for all its worth, haha!
