  • Carrying a gun with an empty chamber can be a polarizing topic.
The IDF has long followed this tradition while most of the world has chosen to carry with a round ready to go.
What should the armed citizen consider when making this decision?
Jeff Mau breaks down his thought process on the topic.

When I started carrying my CCW, it was a very gradual process.
Few months of carrying without a mag in the gun, but on my mag holster instead. Then it was mag in the gun, no round in the chamber. And finally to round in the chamber. I started carrying about 3 months into owning a gun, and when I felt I was proficient with handling and shooting one. I usually doing with 9mm or .45 in appendix during the warmer seasons and switch to 3 o’clock OWB from late fall to mid spring when I’m wearing a light or heavy jacket.

Logical process. I commend you on your safety protocol. I did the same, even after USMC. Going civilian...I just wanted to make sure. Know what I mean? Different carry position, Different firearm, different holster, different use. I was super safe around the house until I felt comfy going out safe. Safe being situational awareness, round in chamber, good comfy holster and location.
      Thanks for your input. 🍻

The story I heard as to how "Israeli carry" got started is that when the IDF was first formed, they didn't have a standard pistol, or holster, some soldiers were supplying their own, and some weren't safe to carry chambered. They didn't want to take the time to train each soldier how to use his/ her individual pistol, so no one carried a chambered pistol.

I also think it might have/had something to do with the fact that IDF has mandatory service for pretty much everyone and has since they were formed. I see an unloaded chamber as the safest practice when you have many soldiers who have never handled a gun before and are only going to serve for 3 years then be done. Also many of those soldiers will serve in a support role where they may never see any combat and I would say for a lot of them the bigger danger is shoot of themselves or being shot accidentally by a colleague. I would just guess that their saltier, higher end operator types don’t have to follow that rule and probably do carry their pistol with a round in the chamber whereas the run of the mill soldier who will likely never use their pistol do not.

I am an Israeli who recently went through the process to have a gun carry permit
I was in the IDF but not in a combat role and had experience with rifles (but not hand guns)
In the IDF, I almost never had a magazine in the gun, let alone a round in the chamber.
Recently the IDF started to issue "empty chamber indicators" which allow you to safely carry the rifle with the magazine inside without the fear of a live round in the chamber.
I was recently deployed to Gaza (as a reservist, operating comms for a tank division) and had my first real life experience in an active combat zone, in which I did have my rifle ready, with a magazine inserted but again never a round in the chamber.
And now that I went through the process of owning a personal hand gun, I went through the formal training needed to get said license.
Never, ever, not in combat training, not in "refresh" gun ranges, and not now when going through the firing and safety course, did I ever have been trained to have a round in the chamber.
Not being in a combat role, the civilian course was actually the most in-depth course I've taken in my life, and even then, the default and only way you are trained is to do "the Israeli method" cocking the gun while you draw it to shoot.
I agree with what you said about how "if people train only one way and then decide to carry a different way it is more dangerous" and that "if people sometimes carry with a round in the chamber and sometimes without, it's a problem"
Both are true, but it's mainly due to muscle memory, or lack there of.
You want people to have good muscle memory to act automatically when the time calls for it. And changing things around hurts this a lot.
But for us Israelis, as this is the way we are trained from the very beginning, it makes sense for us to keep doing it. It is safer for preventing accidental discharge and it is just as automatic and fast.

    • @tyrantworm7392
      @tyrantworm7392 3 месяца назад +2

Demonstrably not as fast. There are other issues, needing both arms or be able to belt rack for example. It can't be argued that it's better because it's measurably not, it can be argued that if it's all you've known, in many applications which may well differ from civilian, the benefits of retraining aren't worth it.

I’m not making a case against any of the points here. With that said it’s asinine to say that it’s comparable to putting on a seatbelt before an accident or that it’s useless to have in that state. With that logic it’s useless to have one if not walking around with it drawn held at the high ready at all times. There is a dynamic range of variables based on the circumstances in the moment. Overall one in the pipe is better for readiness obviously and videos like this should be made but let’s not be so black and white about it. The GlockStore guy makes a case for why he doesn’t carry with one chambered and makes some valid points as well.

I got my carry permit a few months ago. I’ve owned and shot firearms for about 16 years, but never carried one. Once I got my permit I started carrying appendix with one in the chamber. I will say that the first time I tucked a loaded pistol right next to my junk was a bit unnerving. At least for me, it was hard not to imagine the worst case scenario of, “what if it goes off in the holster.” Rationally speaking, I knew that was effectively impossible, but I couldn’t stop my brain from going to that place. I just had to overcome that initial aversion. A well-maintained firearm from a reputable manufacturer, in a proper holster, is total safe to carry.
My biggest fear now is becoming complacent with the handling of a loaded gun during the process of “strapping up” and de-kitting every day (I store my carry gun unloaded since I like to do dry fire practice in the evening and my CCW is not my home defense gun).

    I feel like personally:
if you concealed carry then maybe not have a loaded weapon pointed at your pelvis regional area,
(nobody else knows you have a weapon you enter the gunfight on your terms or evade provided you're not the target.)
however if you open carry you better have it locked and loaded because the gunfight starts with you.
(everyone knows you are armed you're the bad guy for having a gun yet you are expected to be the "hero" having a gun it's a double standard and even worse you are the first target of the shooter.)

  • @aEtherEater
    @aEtherEater 5 месяцев назад +3

Learn how the internals work for your specific model of carry pistol.
Figure out if your gun has a firing pin block. My G3, for example, has an arm that actuates when the trigger is pulled, that pulls a firing pin block out of the path of the pin.
The firing pin cannot reach the primer on the back of the case until the trigger is pulled far enough back.
This means the only passive failure mode is if the primer in the round fails on its own.
Even the sear accidentally releasing cannot set the gun off as the firing pin is physically blocked until the trigger is pulled.

Such a test would be inherently biased, as there is not one possible outcome to a choice but many. Most people don't carry at all, and most of them don't face any negative consequences for that choice. Any negative results would be cherry picking the worst possible outcomes, but then *only* the worst possible outcomes the test maker chose, as you could just as easily put in that test the rare instances of accidental discharge.

As an Israeli, I can share that most IDF regular units such as infantry and armor are equipped with M4 rifles, while special units incorporate pistols into their combat training. Soldiers may carry weapons with a round in the chamber during missions but must unload them on base for safety reasons.
With mandatory service starting at 18, the IDF acknowledges the maturity gap and implements strict safety protocols to mitigate risks.
After my military service, during the early 2000s Second Intifada, I worked as a security guard with a Glock, trained for quick draw and response despite carrying with an empty chamber.
Accidental discharges are viewed with utmost seriousness, underlining the culture of safety in Israeli military and security sectors. The serious approach to safety within the IDF and broader Israeli security sectors is captured by the powerful adage, "safety instructions are written with blood." This phrase underscores the harsh reality that many safety protocols are established in response to past tragedies.
Post October 7th update: recent changes in Israeli regulations now allow more civilians to carry firearms, sparking debate on the practice of carrying with "one in the chamber." A recent incident, where a serviceman struggled to load and fire his weapon during a terrorist attack in a gas station, has highlighted the critical nature of this debate, illustrating the potential life-and-death consequences of such policies.

This is the most common piece of carry advice that doesn't actually matter.
Carrying without a round in the chamber only matters in situations where specifically the extra second is the difference between life and death. SPECTACULARLY overwhelmingly this will not be the case in a real life situation where you need to use your firearm. More likely than not, you will either have at a minimum several seconds to prepare yourself, or else you were always going to be dead no matter how prepared your firearm was because you simply never had the threat awareness to know you needed it.
Is it technically very very slightly more effective at protection? Yes. Is there someone out there amongst the billions of people on earth, who's life was saved because he civilian carried with one in the chamber? Certainly yes. Is that margin of effectiveness worth fretting about? Oh my goodness no. By this reasoning, you couldn't ever tie your shoes, or reach for your wallet, or check your phone, or get interested in a conversation. After all, all of those things slow down your response by more than needing to pull back the slide does.
There's nothing wrong with carrying one in the chamber either of course, that's what I myself would recommend to most people most of the time, because unless you have a specific and unusual concern, accidental discharge just isn't a large worry either, but whenever I see someone making a big issue of it its a red flag that this person hasn't really thought through what they're saying, and probably is not a great source of advice.

Running into an interesting situation with the Certum Lux. I have a Tlr7a on my Glock 19. When I carry, after a while, the twist on the light that allows it to refrain from turning on when pressed, somehow gets activated.
What this means is that if a situation were to occur where I wanted to activate the light, it won’t turn on, unless I twist the light back into the mode that will allow me to turn the light back on again. Not ideal for an emergency situation!
Part of me thinks it could be because the holster doesn’t cover that portion of the light. So it’s twisting against my body when I carry, activating the “do not turn on” mode.

About a year ago I had purchased an $80 holster for a company called JX (I’m not a very big overweight person) anyway I had done countless draws with this holster, I found myself in a situation where I had to draw my Glock 43x with a TLR 7 sub and it got stuck inside the holster, I didn’t panic ran into my truck pulled out my Shockwave and all 3 individuals ran off without a round fired. I couldn’t imagine if one of them or all of them grabbed me and I couldn’t chamber a round. Moving forward I come across Tenicor and made the purchased it is a SL2 the holster feels and conceals great and the fear of my firearm being stuck has slowly disappeared. I’m putting this out there for others to read and be aware of your purchase, bad things happen when you least expect it this is facts.

All correct until the part where he talks about the "Gun magically going off" I do not get why these guntubers consistently forget that there are videos plastered all over the internet of people shooting themselves in the leg from holsters failing somehow OR from a foreign object in the holster. Its not magic, its being human. People make mistakes, people dont notice things.
Wonder why we have airbags in cars? There is a reason. Wonder why we have manual safetys on guns? there is a reason.
Is carrying without one in the chamber a smart idea? No. Is a holster a guarantee that your gun wont go off? NO.
We are not robots. We are not always aware of what is inside our holster 24/7 and the location of every twig, rock or object that could make its way in there in any given situation.
Nor are we aware of the structural integrity of the holster and when it will fail or break.
can we guarantee a very high degree of safety by being responsible and aware? Absolutely. Is it foolproof? No
Having a manual safety is the best compromise between holster safety and not carrying one in the chamber.

The idea that carrying one in the chamber guarantees your safety when the truth is that most accidental discharges happen upon drawing a gun is very interesting. Trained professionals shoot themselves every year and it’s because while people are telling themselves to get comfortable with their gun, I think that’s the exact thing that leads to accidental discharges. You shouldnt be so comfortable with something that can take a life enough to say “I’m going to be perfect when I need to be” and genuinely think that will be the case when it’s proven every year this just won’t ever be true.

Every damn time, I'm hearing this "need more training" argument. In what exactly, though? Most people who choose to carry empty are worried less about themselves handling a chambered weapon, and more about some yokel doing so if their gun gets loose. How many of those parroting the 'seatbelt after car crash' analogy are prepared to protect their holstered weapon in a fight? Like your average fight, 2 dumb oafs arguing over a parking space or whatever...where pulling your weapon out will at minimum get you red flagged? The dude in the vid seems pretty fit, and maybe he has trained for that, dunno. But your average CCW guy, what do they train for beyond draw, fire, and makes some groupings in center mass? I mean come on.
It's been years ago, but I've been in a few scraps, and let me tell you they're usually a hot mess. There's pushing, punching/kicking, grabbing, ripping shirts and stuff, rolling all over the ground, cellphones and wallets flying out of pockets, dudes reaching blindly for this or that, etc. So with a chance that it gets popped out of that kydex holster during a fight, how comfortable do you feel with your chambered pistol entering that chat? Or do you absolutely trust that it won't lol? Let's run some stats, justifiable defensive shootings vs physical confrontations, guess what's more likely? So there you go. Personally, I only carry a pistol hot if it has a manual safety.

I've run into two people who didn't carry with a round in the chamber. The first was a new shooter who didn't feel comfortable about carrying with one in the chamber. The second was one who recently joined the force from the military, and they apparently didn't carry with one in the chamber. Ironically, both started carrying with one in the chamber after getting more training. My issue is time, and it comes down to simple math. A 147 grn 9mm bullet coming out of a Glock 19 moves, on average, at 967 feet per second. Most gunfights happen within 10 yards, but for argument's sake, lets double that to 20 yards. 60 feet divided by 967 feet means that the 9mm bullet traveling towards you will cover that distance in 6/100ths of a second. That means that, in the best case scenario, you need to be able to draw and rack a round in 6/100ths of a second to break even. You are setting yourself up to be behind, and that is not somewhere I want to be in a gunfight.
